This review is way over due. I took in my Staffordshire (Dexter) into VCA and met Dr. Mackley. Dex has a reoccurring ear infection and had separated his ear flap. He also has odd growths on different areas. Dexter's doctor and surgeon was Dr. Mackley. She was great, personal and professionally. Mackley took great care with Dexter. She even removed every growth she could find! I've had doctors who won't remove these growths. These growths grow on their ankles, eyelids just about everywhere and in my experience cause a lot of problems later in life. The surgery went great and Dex healed beautifully. Dr. Mackley even cleaned an older attack from a javelina. Trimmed and stitched a wound still healing. I was flabbergasted. Dr. Mackley went above and beyond for her patient, Dex. This location has been home for the care of my cats for many years. Dr. DiCozio was always so amazing with my cats, and I'll never forget her kindness when my cat Sweets was rushed to an emergency hospital and passed the day before her scheduled surgery. It's that kindness that makes me a forever customer. Hope she is enjoying her well deserved retirement! Dr. Lister took over as our usual doctor for the yearly check ups, and dental for my cats as needed. Gizmo, Marshmallow, and Mayhem are always in good hands with both Dr. Lister and their staff. We just visited and it's always great to be put at ease my seniors are in good health, and suggestions of care plans as needed. I adopted a 4 month old pup from the ASPCA was given a free voucher for my first visit From my first call I was met with a kind and welcoming staff. I have been in a few times since, as well as having my dog groomed there. Dr. Mackley has shown great interest and taken great care of my Lucas. He was beautifully groomed. The vet techs are awesome. One in particular is outstanding and as soon as I get her name I will update this review. When Lucas was sick they got me in quickly and he was much better the next day. We took our toy poodle to Dr. Mackley for teeth cleaning, aware that some extractions might be required. What a huge mistake. He was there for ten hours and was completely beat to s**t when we finally picked him up. Dr. Mackly said "Dentistry is not my thing"! He took many days to recover his energy and general well being. We recently had some additional dental work done at a different vet and the difference in service was literally night and day. He was finished promptly, we were kept informed, and he was in excellent shape when we picked him up. He was almost immediately back to his normal self. Dr Mackley takes care of both my Shih Tzu and bengal and she and the rest of the staff do a fantastic job. Going to the vet isn't always a favorite but my animals even like going there. VCA Apache Junction in Arizona - Decided to try this vet as ours was in Gilbert and not very convenient. We had gone to that vet for 11 years. We have 3 rescue dogs and they all have health issues - one has diabetes, one has cushings and the other has a cleft palate. Vet bills are big - very big. Anyway, had records transferred to VCA Apache Junction and set up appts for all 3 dogs. The website says you get the first visit free. I asked about this after making the appts and was told that only applied to 2 pets not 3. Their website states "free first exam" period - nothing about number of pets. I then asked why not all 3 and that's when the problems started. The office manager told me during our heated conversation that we should look for another vet and they did not want our business. She then hung up on me. I then received a text within a few minutes as she had just cancelled all the upcoming first appointments. I did not do this - SHE cancelled without me requesting she do so. I then called and asked for the pet records that were sent to them by my previous vet. She refused and told me she would not e-mail the records and hung up. About 10 minutes later the records were in my in box. I would question ever going to this vet if the office manager's attitude represents the practice. She apparently does not give a crap about my 3 unhealthy dogs. I needed the appointments as these dogs are not healthy. All I tried to do was explain that 3 dogs should get a first exam free of charge. Their policy she said is 2 dogs and she would not budge. I would guess so far this year our vet bills are over $6,000 and will approach $10k by the end of the year. So this office manager gives up business for the entire practice due to one free first pet visit, cancels all appointments without my permission hangs up on me twice and then refuses to send the records. More importantly, they are advertising free first exams on their website and not honoring what they advertise. As a side note, we have had surgeries done at the VCA Mesa Animal hospital located on Country Club Drive. These are specialized surgeries where our normal vet referred us as they could not do them. I have had nothing but great work done there and have probably spent $20k or more in the past 10 years. One surgery alone was about $10k Anyway, finding a different vet. read more

Never take your pet here if you love them. A few years ago I took my cat in for care because he screamed during and after eating. VCA vet diagnosed him with bad teeth that had to be pulled. Because of their obscene prices, I took him elsewhere and had most of his teeth pulled. That didn't seem to help. I took him back to the second vet and he was then diagnosed with throat cancer and that's why it hurt him to eat. I had him put down the same day so as not to make him suffer any longer. VCA was no help at all, they just take the money without getting to the root of the problem. I should have listened when other people spoke ill of them. They were right! These women are dishonest. Do not trust them. They refused to disclose important pharmacy information very important to my dogs medical care. They refuse to cooperate with any outside pharmacies so they can charge massive price mark ups. That's not a VCA policy that's this VCA alone that does that. These women are more like used car salesmen than pharmacists. They are willing to be dishonest and withhold information so they can take your money. From the moment I step foot in that door and I told them I intended to order my medications through chewy. Then through the entire medical care I showed them all of the prescriptions I can order through chewy and then told them I needed a prescription so I could continue to order through chewing. They didn't give a s*** and they kept their mouth shut knowing full well they were never going to help me. Don't be fooled. They don't have sympathy empathy or compassion. Ashley the veterinarian manager is basically a psychopath and will be a huge witch over the phone while she holds a smile through the conversation. No emotion whatsoever was displayed other than satisfaction at my misery. I already spent $600 here and despite that fact I have no medication to give my dog and he's dieing. read more

I have been traveling from north Scottsdale to VCA AJ, specifically to see Dr. Lister. Dr. Lister's care has been extraordinarily good. However, last Friday I had the misfortune to see Dr. Mackley, their medical director. I was extremely disappointed in the care provided, the bedside manner, the abrupt closure of the visit, and the lack of follow-up on test results. My file explicitly says that my dog is to see only Dr. Lister, so I'm not sure where their scheduling got confused. I am scheduling a follow-up visit specifically with Dr. Lister, let's hope that we actually get to see her. If this is the "new" VCA AJ then I'm looking for another vet. read more

This Hospital is right around the corner from us and we have taken both of our dogs to AJ Animal Hospital, which is around 23 - 25 years between the two. The Doctors and all the staff was just great. They handled them like babies, gave them the best care possible. They are very friendly, loving and compassionate. When we had to have our first fur baby euthanized, Dr. DiCosio was there at the time, she was very loving and caring with our Bonita, she was helpful when it came to sending her out for cremation and getting her ashes and urn back. When our second fur baby, Lucky passed away here at home Christmas Eve, the Dr. office was more than helpful at that time helping us to know where to take Lucky to be sent for cremation and get his ashes back to put in the urn with Bonita. I am so glad there are people as compassionate, loving, caring and friendly with the animals. We are so lucky to have them here in Apache Junction. God Bless and Be with all of them. Very friendly and professional staff! They kindly and thoroughly answered my 100 (or 200) questions about my new puppy's care and did not rush at all. The staff, including Vet Tim, were super helpful and all the recommendations and choices are very much appreciated. I was given a chock-full welcome bag and info folder, and I was able to check out in the exam room. The tech even helped me out to my car, since I had to carry my big baby pup! The office looked nice and clean and the equipment up to date. The prices are fair and less than some area chain veterinarian offices. I was REALLY excited to find a new vet for my 2 cats and 2 dogs. I just got a new puppy and I wanted to take advantage of the free first visit so the staff can get to know me and I can see if this was a good place to get care for my fur babies. I made the appointment in the middle of the night on Sunday. I was unable to make the appointment on time on Monday because I had a work emergency that would not allow me to leave on time. I called 30 minutes after my appointment scheduled time to explain I'd still like to go in. I understood they couldn't see me today and I said I'd call back to reschedule when I knew for sure I would have the time to avoid any mishaps. I got a call back and was told that because I missed my appointment, I could not longer get the free first visit for my new puppy. I begged for an exception especially since I just booked the appointment. The lady said NO yet still wanted my address. Safe to say I am not interested in taking my fur children to a place that's so rigid and unwelcoming. read more

Never go here. I took my cat in to get euthanized. When I told them I wanted to hold my cat while they injected the shot to sedate her, they didn't even know what I was talking about. They took her, put her on the table and started grabbing her leg to put in a catheter. They were hurting her. I had to stop them. Finally, after telling them 3 times to sedate her FIRST, then put in the catheter, they did. It took three attempts while my cat was fully sedated to get the catheter in. I gave them one star because it was the lowest choice. Really, they should get NO STARS AT ALL. read more

We just got back from VCA after euthanizing our cat. Vet tech Michelle and Dr. Tim were excellent in both treating our Junior and caring for us as we faced this difficult time. The price was a little high but they earned every bit of their fee, as they went out of their way to assure Junior's comfort as well as our feelings about the whole process. I would recommend this clinic to anyone who needs a vet for their loved one, whether it is simple treatment or, as in our case, euthanasia. If I could give Dr. Jakobe a negative star rating, I would do so. We have been going here for about 4 years and have seen a steady decline in service as good veterinarians have bailed. As she was giving our dogs their shots, I pointedly asked her how much pain they were going to be in and how we should manage it. Her exact words were " I would be surprised if they were sore at all. There injections aren't painful" Well, several hours later, both dogs could hardly walk and had to be carefully picked up and carried outside to do their business. Had Ms Jakobe been professional and honest with me, I would have been prepared for the adverse reactions. Instead, we were both afraid that they were having allergic reactions to the shots and called an emergency veterinarian service. They were shocked to hear what we had been told. Especially when we informed them of what shots they were given. They told us these shots were typically very painful for at least the first 24 hours and allayed our fears by telling us what signs to look for. All of this worry would have been avoided if we had been told the truth up front. That woman ( (Jakobe) will never touch our dogs again. Interesting to note that when we first started going there, the waiting room was always busy. Yesterday was half price day and we saw no other clients in the time we were there. It seems other pet owners have already gotten wise to this place. If you care about your animals, take them elsewhere. Note. They called us this morning to follow up on the service. I told them what happened and got something resembling an apology from someone in management. However, she did defend Dr Jakobe. When I pointed out that the place was empty on what should have been a busy day, gave me the ridiculous excuse that they have had to reduce bookings because they only have one vet. My reaction was, if you gave quality care, your office would be busy enough to justify hiring an additional vet or too. read more

This place is absolutely terrible, the ladies in here are absolutely rude and uncaring of you and your pet if you can't afford their ridiculous prices, they don't have any option for payment plans all they want you to do is fill out a thing to see if you even qualify for a credit card to pay for it on top of that they charged an extra $200 because it was slightly after 5 to pick up a puppy who was sick and had possible parvo while we struggled to come up with $700 already to pay for the treatment and medicine and all the other stuff, we called before 5 to let them know we had the money and we were on our way so when we get there the door is locked, they called the police because we were knocking on the door tryna get someone to answer, they said I was being irate, she don't understand the true meaning of irate clearly tryna say we can give the dog over to a rescue team who can provide proper care for it like WHAT? now you telling us were unfit to have a puppy because the vet bills are ridiculously expensive, I would avoid this place all together it's a joke the employees are a joke and not being able to have some kind of better options to pay for your bills for ppl who can't provide $700+ out of pocket on demand is a joke, completely worthless and very unprofessional read more

Once again....This is my third, maybe the fourth time. To leave a review. Just want to say.....The staff awesome, from beginning to end. It was Dr.Mackleys' diagnosis that has given me a reason to write. A short look into his mouth. SHE claimed he needed a dental. Most of our pets do. But then she said he has an abscess. Wanted a biopsy to determine if it was cancer. Oh my god, we were so very confused. Bottom LINE, 3800.00 for a treatment that might not be the answer. If it is cancer, what now? We asked what about antibiotics and pain meds. Her answer, I will prescribe...but don't think it will do much good. Went with the meds. Our kitties went thru what he thought was torture. After a day of meds, I told my husband....If this is his ending. We will let him go naturally. Believe it or not. He shed his tooth, no pain! It's been two months with a very happy and vibrant cat. I was ready for euthanasia. Didn't want him to suffer. The doctor, a very quick look. Maybe two seconds. Gave us a square for treatment. 3800.00! Very disappointed. I will not return... read more

I had to bring my cat in in February and the vet tech and the vet was amazing. I cannot remember their names but they were so sweet. However, the front desk workers are rude every single time. I had made an appointment for my puppy and they said 4pm and my emails all said 4pm but the time got changed to 330pm somehow when my confirm appointment email came and that doesnt work for me. I just called to change and then cancel cause I can't make it and the girl I was on the phone with rudely and with an attitude said "sorry about that." and hung up on me. I'm not coming back. VCA Apache Junction Animal Hospital is a joke! My dog has had an ear infection for over 2 years now. I have taken him there and spent well over 2000.00 he still has the ear infection. I took him there to get his nails clipped and they told me his feet were sore. They gave me a dog shampoo to soak his feet in. Now his feet are worse. They are all cracked and bleeding. He was also licking all the time so they put him on an allergy medicine at the cost of 60.00 a month. Plus they put him on a special diet none of witch is helping He still has the ear infection his feet are bleeding and he has not eaten in 3 days. Can't trust them anymore because it seems they don't know what they are doing. I will be taking him to a different vet All this place cares about is the money not the wellness of your pet I just wanted to make an update on Buster. I took him to another vet. His ears are better. Worst animal hospital ever! Called because my 6 year old cat was very sick when I woke this morning. I made arrangements w my work to be off. Called around 8 am when they open. Who told me the soonest they could get them was Thursday. They didn't have till Thursday. He didn't even have till noon. We took our 2 dogs in paid for the wellness check up and office visit and exam. Had shots given and told them about my dogs ears itching. $400 dollars and a few days later they are still itching their ears. VCA did not say or do anything about their nails. It seems like an assembly line process hear. For as much as we paid for the service we got we should have gone to petsmart it would have been cheaper and they would have been registered. Well, after going to this vet for years I'm afraid I may have to change vets. While I really love the doctors and staff, the cost just seems to be way more than average. I can't afford to continue taking my pets here. I spent around $600 there last week for my dog who is having some pretty serious issues and I still don't know what's wrong with her. It's very frustrating. I have zero complaints about the vets or the staff, but the cost is really high. We also discussed boarding my dogs and the cost was through the roof with no discounts for long time, loyal customers. It just seems out of hand price-wise to me. It's a shame because I like being loyal and I really do like the vets here. UPDATE I still take my dogs here. I just like the vets too much to switch even if it is pricey. I have been coming here for years. Now things seen sooo pricey! And what is with waiting for a half hour after services are rendered? Not a happy client today. March 26. 2 weeks after a visit to VCA with my 13 pound dog, i finally see the light. It seems that they might of over medicated my little guy by injecting him with who know what. Who kows, because they grabbed him out of my arms and wisked him off to parts unknown. Never has this happened before. I had to get him seen by a different Vet do to very severe problems. He became very lethargic, extremely soar, broke out in hives, and ran a fever. It was horrible! My new Vet was extremely compassionate. He helped out in every way he could. He said that my dog might of had a reaction due to too many meds being administered at once. And the soarness my little guy was experiencing in his back and legs could have been from him being dropped from the table. I will never know as they saw fit to take him from me, just for injections. We deep down already knew she was pretty sick and we asked for the Dr's honest opinion. Ultimately we had to have her put to sleep. My dog is very particular when it comes to going to a vet. He hates him! He loved VCA Apache Junction. Granted he did growl at the vet but she understood and made him feel comfortable and by the time he was done he was licking the vet in the face. They took their time to make my dog feel comfortable. We took our poodle, Bengie to VCA in 2012. They told us our dog had bladder stones and he needed surgery for removal of the stones. We are snow birds com9ng down from Washington state. We contacted our veterinarian in Puyallup, WA. He agreed, if he has bladder stones, they should be removed. We scheduled the surgery for the stones to be removed and the urethea to be flushed out. We waited at home for the call that she was ready to be picked up. The vet called us and my husband had them talk to me. They were done with the surgery and they did not get the bladder and urethea flushed out. They asked if I wanted to put the dog under again to have them complete this, At that time they informed me that the dog tried to bite them during surgery. I told them I thought she would be asleep during the surgery. They said she was but she still tried to bite them. I did not have them put her back under to finish what they started because of her age. The procedure cost over $2,000. My husband went and picked up the dog. He was crying and was given nothing for pain that night. We returned to Washington four weeks later. The dog was not doing well. Our vet did x-rays. The bladder was full of bladder stones. He said they could not have come back that fast. He redid the surgery for $1100. and gave me a bottle of all of the bladder stones they removed. The dog never fully recovered and died a few months later. I would not recommend this firm for anything. They would not let us see the dog until we had paid the bill in full. Patrick McGuane read more
