It appears they attract a clientele that likes to party and who does not care about their neighbors. AND the office closes at 7 pm. They give you a cell number, but you can't actually call them because there is no WiFi!! We rolled in at 7 pm to a couple getting hammered literally outside our door( room 14) They eventually were joined by a very LOUD drunk man and his dog. They drank, were obnoxiously loud, dog barking until almost 1 am. We asked them to break the party up at 12:00-they did not. We tried multiple times to call the office, but the call dropped- because No WIFI!! . We had to leave at 5:30 am and had less than 4 hours of sleep. But we love the charm of Wachapreague and The Island House restaurant and we will be back to patronize them. We just will stay down the road in Exmore.

A few rooms are pet friendly, so bring your dog. Its a short walk to the Boat Ramps, Marinas, Tackle Shops, Restaurant/Bar, Market, Playground, Coast Guard Station, V.I.M.S., & Fireman's Carnival. There is a playground with tennis courts in town, use our bikes. We're in the migratory path of hundreds of birds. Go kayaking, rent a golf cart, tour a local winery or check out some antique shops. Fishing here is fantastic- they catch lots of: Flounder (Mar-Nov), Croaker (July-Aug), Red & Black Drum(May-June), Sea Bas (May- June), Stripers- Rock (Dec-Feb), Blue & White Marlin (June-Sept), Tuna & Wahoo (June-Sept), Dolphin, Mako Shark, Blue Fish (May-Sept). We can help you put together a fun filled day on the water; fishing in and off shore, clamming, crabbing, take a boat taxi to the beautiful Barrier Islands to search for shells, just a short boat ride away.

But once you step inside, you'll never want to leave. This townhouse rental is beautifully decorated with soft, cool colors and beachy items everywhere. I cannot say enough good things about this home and cannot wait to have many more stays here. I was even able to contact the owners directly when I had questions after the rental agency was closed for the day. I would highly recommend this house to anyone...just don't pick the week I want :-)

We stayed with 3 other retired  couples this time and enjoyed having our own bedrooms and bathrooms. One chilly and rainy day we couldn't go fishing but enjoyed the fireplace and appreciated the nice dry firewood the owners supplied. Really enjoyed seeing the Chincoteague wild ponies again, and this time we did get to the Wallops NASA base.   We are planning on bringing our grandchildren for a week next summer. There are so many free activities that we can enjoy with them from catching crabs and swimming off the dock,  surf fishing on Assateague, and even climbing the light house.  Plus the 2 visitor centers on Assateague and Wallops can keep them busy if weather doesn't let us enjoy the National Seashore which is my favorite beach. Especially enjoyed lots of take-out seafood, and the savings vs eating in restaurants. But cooked lots of great breakfasts in the wonderful kitchen that was exceptionally well stocked with everything from paper products to spices and every pot and pan you can imagine including a large crock pot for our gang

Our communications with Sherry and staff before arrival were responsive and helpful. The home is simply stunning on the inside and perfect for 2 couples. What put a negative ending on our lovely stay was the attitude of Island Getaways toward personal items left behind. "Throw it away" is their attitude and policy. It is evidently too much hassle for a customer service vacation rental company to facilitate the return of accidentally forgotten belongings to renters - AFTER they have vacated the property. I can't help they cynicism in my thoughts... they have our money, we've left the property spotless, except for our forgotten personal items, and they cannot find the time or generosity to make a phone call to discuss a return using the credit card information they already have. I told them I would pay extra for the box, padding and their time arranging it. My items included about 6 personal 4-8 oz jars of nuts & seeds (collectible glass canning jars) NOT fresh store bought food, and an unopened 32 oz cannister of high quality protein powder. I don't know anyone personally who would intentionally leave personal items behind. I believe that's why it's termed "accidental." I believe people are capable of knowing the difference between store bought fresh food and personal collectible jars filled with pantry items. I believe people realize an unopened cannister of protein powder is fairly expensive. I believe most people are good and kind and generous when given an opportunity to be helpful to others. It turns out even in the off season - when Island Getaways office staff is obviously not as busy as during peak season - it is way too much hassle to carry customer service to the customer AFTER they are no longer on site.

The road to get to the campsites / office is relatively bumpy and the road is full of ruts and rocks that could actually be challenging for a small car or a car that is low to the ground. We drove slowly and it was fine. The lady in the office was very friendly and we paid in cash which is preferred. This is clearly a family-run operation. The walk down to the beach was via a kind-of steep set of stairs. At the bottom there were a few other groups of people there, many of them apparently semi-professional fossil hunters with specialized digging hand tools. Unfortunately the tide was coming in when we got there (poor planning on our part), but this limited our fossil searching to a sliver of exposed beach itself as the water was covering a significant portion of the ground. I would highly recommend Wellington-style rubber boots or something similar to keep your feet dry while you search (everyone else on the beach was wearing them). Your sneakers will probably get wet. As far as fossils go, we didn't find much. One of us found what appeared to be a very small shark tooth. You are not allowed to dig into the cliffs themselves due to erosion concerns but you could see layers of shells and small fossils in the cliffside which was interesting. All in all it was not the fossil-rich experience I was expecting. I've heard about digging for fossils at Calvert Cliffs for many years and so it was a bit disappointing to come away empty-handed. If we had been better prepared to wade out into the water and brought some sort of implements with us we may have had more success. Not a terrible afternoon at all but not a place I will be chomping at the bit to return to.

They even give you a permit so you can leave and come back on the same day. I would suggest bringing an umbrella or sun tent, as there isn't much shade (at least before 2 pm est, when we left). The water is a bit murky, but refreshing and sandy once you get out past the shoreline. You may want to bring water shoes.

After our experience with Cattail Cottage and Harbour Rental's staff and management, we will never be booking them again. Arriving at Cattail Cottage this year, everything seemed to be okay except that the only actual couch in the house in the back room is stained. We did not mind this much because we were not visiting Chincoteague to sit on the couch. One day, after getting back from dinner and hanging out in town, we arrived back to see that the house had become infested with hundreds of ants. Most of the ants were located in the bathroom right off of the bedroom, which unfortunately has a type of barn door on a slide which does not reach the floor to close off the bathroom to separate this issue from where we would be sleeping. We reported the infestation to Harbour Rentals that night and followed up again in the morning and repeatedly throughout our week in Chincoteague after sleeping elsewhere beginning that night. The office only gave us six Terro ant bait traps for hundreds of ants. After spending most of the next day playing exterminator and cleaning the house on vacation, the ants seemed to subside for that day, however, they returned and were now also in the kitchen, especially by the sink, even though we did not use the kitchen other than storing things in the fridge. We repeatedly reached out to Harbour Rentals requesting a call from the manager, named Anita according to office staff Bill and Sandy, throughout the remainder of our stay and never heard from her. Upon dropping off our keys on the last day, Sandy was in office and stated that Anita had visited the house without telling us and while we were not there. Sandy stated that Anita did not find any evidence of ants in the home, however, prior to us dropping off the keys, we did our own walk through of the cottage and found even more ants, both dead and alive, all around the home and took a video which showcases this. We still have not heard from or seen the manager, Anita, after having repeatedly requesting a call, sending an email, and visiting the office in person multiple times.

We had no issues with checking in or getting our security deposit back. The two parking places were close to the entrance and the location is good, but pretty much anywhere on Chincoteague Island is fine since it is small.
