I love Dr Varon. I have had intermittent stomach pain for as long as I can remember, even in grammer school and it got much worse by high school. I had been to a doctor who "thought" he knew how to heal leaky gut, but it continued to get worse over 10+ years until my IBS and leaky gut sent me to the ER. At that point I started going to a Naturalpath, as it was obvious I was not on the right path. She ran many many tests at a lot of $$ since neither she, nor the tests, were covered by insurance. The tests gave me a lot of great information and I was able to continue with the supplements she had recommended. It helped immensely that one tests identified 5 major food sentivities and removing them from my diet help alot. But a couple years after that, my gut got really bad again and I was always in pain, exhausted and sick. I had 4 friend who had been seeing Dr Varon and at their recommendation I finally made an appointment with him. His healing protocol for my leaky gut, the cause of my belly pain works. It isn't cheap, but it is way cheaper than getting cancer and digestive cancers run very strongly on both sides of my family. Again I am feeling much better and evey time I have another followup with Dr Varon he makes a change in my morning shake which makes my feel a little better still. The only thing I can figure on why he has so many bad reviews are due to preconceived expectations. Just because another doctor, or your own research shows other supplements may help, they are not generally part of a full protocol for healing. If you see him, are open to what he says, respect his knowledge and ask questions at the end of your appointment you will find healing without big pharma and a wonderful doctor. If you just want surgery and/or pharmaceuticals, he is not the doctor for you. Instead of the 2 hours it was supposed to take, it took almost 4 and my throat is now sore. In addition, his diagnosis was "a lazy stomach" and he performed a biopsy even though there was nothing wrong with the test. He now wants me to make an appointment to discuss the biopsy. This doctor is rude, dishonest, a bully and will push you to despair with his bedside manner, which is non-existent. He diagnoses everyone with the same disease, tells you that his magic list of vitamins will "cure you" and then if you ask questions, interrupt you until you give up. Lastly, he will call you a liar. There is no conversation to be had. He has no consideration for the feelings and emotions of the sick patient who is PAYING him for his expertise. GI problems are bad enough. Having a rude, impatient and pushy doctor as your physician is worse. read more

Dr Varon is now 80, time to retire. The last time I saw him (a few years ago) for a colonoscopy he prescribed a list of vitamins, herbs and a very expensive probiotic to cure diabetes. It didn't. read more

There is not a better gastro doc than Dr. Varon. I was hospitalized for a severe flareup of my Crohn's Disease with the horrid NG tube through my nose and into my stomach to pull out all the toxic buildup that was causing blockage. Dr. Varon and another wonderful doc named Dr.Dimitrikus kept very careful watch during my six days in the hospital. Dr. Varon was there making rounds sometimes as late as midnight, even 2:00 AM, checking on my tummy. He has warmed empathetic bedside manner. The most compassionate doctor I have ever seen in my 40 years of battling this disease. And instead of rushing to surgery (which my first Crohn's docs did), he went for total "bowel rest" meaning no food by mouth until he was sure all the bad stuff was out. Then he put me on a liquid diet. Followed by natural healing foods. I LOVE HIM!! Besides his passion and compassion/empathy, he recommended easy to digest foods that would help me avoid another flareup--yogurt probiotic drinks, chicken broth and some antioxidants that I had never heard of and they are all working beautifully. He really knows how to combine traditional Western medicine with natural healing. I feel at least 80% better since I was released from hospital a month ago. It is unfortunate that I have to give such a poor review because I actually liked Dr Varon quite a bit. When with him, I appreciated his thoroughness & attention & I would not do a colonoscopy with anyone else- his staff at the clinic is wonderful. However, his office staff stinks. She could care less about you & will do nothing to help you or facilitate your needs. Scheduling tests is a nightmare, she will not send results or post them to your John Muir account without being pestered to do so & good luck getting her to send records to other doctors. I tried 3 times to get my SIBO results sent to my nutritionist & other health practitioner & they were not ever sent. She is sullen & hostile & there is no way to get around her to ask questions or give feedback to Dr Varon. I am a friendly, polite & undemanding patient with experience in the medical world. I do not bother medical staff unless I truly need something. I can only guess that she is related in some way to Dr Varon because I cannot imagine that he would tolerate her treatment of patients otherwise. read more

I'm happy to see this doctor has gotten some positive ratings given how terribly disappointed I was when I saw him. He didn't seem to want to hear what I had to say, and didn't even ask me anything about what I eat. Instead he said things no doctor should ever say to a patient. I informed Dr. Varon that I have a history of trouble with yeast infections due to a doctor prescribing the antibiotic tetracycline when I was a teenager for well over a year due to acne that wasn't even that bad. Dr. Varon took it upon himself to tell me I'm a "prime candidate for colon cancer." Everyone knows about the placebo effect. People's bodies can respond to their beliefs. We're suggestible --especially to the advice of experts. Dr. Varon belabored a number of terrible health outcomes I could possibly face without any consideration whatsoever of the effect this could have on my psyche and health. And this knowing I was in a weakened condition after a recent hospital stay. A sensitive physician might have mentioned concerns or cautions without predicting the worst so affirmatively. Although his natural supplements undoubtedly have helped some of his patients, he has a hodge podge collection of products that are all available at health food stores or online. Some are from relatively decent companies but none are from the professional brands and more reputable companies that other professionals use -- labels such as Biotics Research, Pure Encapsulations, Biomatrix....After I told him of my history with yeast infections he didn't even ask me if I eat sugar which is the first and most important place to start regarding candida, or yeast infections, given that sugar feeds yeast. He gave me carte blanche to eat fruit, which also can promote yeast infections. He didn't mention anything about Caprylic Acid which along with proper diet, can knock yeast infections out, nor about NutriBiotic which also is effective for yeast infections. Nor did he say anything about any kind of chlorophyll pearls which are also beneficial -- especially for all too common ileocecal problems. He recommended sheep's milk yoghurt, as well as a lactose free product made from cow's milk. One must be careful with cow's milk given that it's inflammatory for many people, and again, cow's milk and cheese can also be problematic for yeast infections. Although the products he recommended contain yoghurt types of bacteria which are good, these bacterium hardly make it past digestion in the stomach to reach the intestines where the good bacteria is so badly needed. This alone is not a sufficient protocol for candida (or yeast infection), especially when dietary considerations were not adequately addressed by Dr. Varon. I could go on, but again, I'm glad to see he helps other patients. Unfortunately I haven't found a lot of good functional (or holistic) MDs in this area. And Dr. Varon is right to believe in natural medicine. However, there are doctors who know much more about nutrition, nutritional supplements, and how to guide and caution patients without terrifying them. I will never go back to this perhaps well intentioned, but highly unprofessional physician. read more

Dr. Varon truly saved my life. I had episodes of stomach pain that were so severe, I was taken to the emergency room several times each month, via ambulance. I have had gastrointestinal problems for years and was tired and sluggish. I've been working with Dr Varon for almost 2 years now. He has helped me immensely. I feel so much better. He keeps re tailoring the program to work on new problems that come up and I have been amazed at the results. My acupuncturist could not find any problems with me even after a year and a half of no acupuncture due to the pandemic. My cholesterol is down 50 points without meds and my blood pressure is in the low range. My arrythmia and reflux are gone and I feel great. Awful Gi. His solution for everything is to drink his shake. My daughter had serious gi issues and had lost lots of weight. He told her she would never feel better and would be this way her whole life. He told her that she and I, her mother would probably die of Cancer. Just crazy. Dr. Varon is an incredible gastroenterologist! After many years of not feeling well and now knowing what was wrong, Dr. Varon's diagnosis has been life changing. I never would have thought it was all caused by my gut. He is very knowledgeable on the current studies of gut bacteria and has also done his own research. He treats conditions with all natural prebiotics, probiotics and various supplements, most easily taken in a morning shake he has developed. I appreciate I wasn't given a prescription medication but was given a thoroughly researched solution. The probiotics and supplements have eliminated a lot of my problems and it keeps getting better all the time. He took advantage of the fact that she was alone. Never once returned my calls. Did said that the result of his decisions was not his concern! Very unethical. Not empathetic. I would not recommend him to anyone. If you care about you health or want a doctor that cares about you do not go to him!!! His front office staff is also very rude!
