OMG--I absolutely love Vapiano. This ended up being the perfect lunch spot while we were staying nearby in Zurich at the Home hotel. Super convenient location, and exactly what you want when you're looking for something fresh, quick, and satisfying. The setup is casual and cafeteria-style, but in the best way--lots of great options like pizzas, salads, and sandwiches, all made fresh right in front of you. It's easy, efficient, and actually kind of fun to walk through and pick exactly what you're in the mood for. I went with the fungi pizza and a salad, and both were absolutely delicious. The pizza was perfectly cooked with great flavor, and the salad was crisp and super fresh--exactly what I was hoping for. We grabbed a table outside and enjoyed everything alfresco, which made the whole experience even better. Great vibe, relaxed atmosphere, and perfect for people-watching while you eat. Service was quick, prices were very reasonable (especially for Zurich), and the quality really exceeded expectations for a casual spot. Odd set up, but it's pretty popular! As you walk in someone hands you a credit card type thing and you proceed to hand that card to the various different sections and order your food. You're handed a buzzer and off you go to find your own table (it's a free for all). When your buzzer goes off you proceed to go get your food and then you eat. No table service, no nothing. You pay on your way out, and of course they ask you for a tip... they literally did nothing! You already are paying for the food! The food - both my daughter and I had pizza. It was ok, I mean it's pizza... only two beers to choose from, a Pilsner on tap and bottled wheat beer. Again, very busy place, so clearly the locals seem to like it. Would I return? We love Vapiano, and in the category of Fast-Casual dining, this location in Zurich easily earns Four Stars. I read, with great interest, the comments from other Yelpers, and I found their comments really valid. Swiss Vapianos are more expensive than Vapianos in other countries ... but isn't everything more expensive in Switzerland? The kitchens are really noisy, but our cook, Sebastian, was patient, helped us with pasta choices and ingredients, and chatted up a storm while he was preparing our Spaghetti Carbonara (CHF 19.50) and Pesto Basilico with Campanelle (CHF 17.50). English wasn't his first language, but he made a great effort, which we appreciated, and we responded with really inadequate German, Italian, and frankly, on my part, just distorted English. We enjoyed ourselves, and I feel the service was excellent, and the Carbonara and Pesto Basilico were delicious (Thank You, Sebastian!). The restaurant was busy -- there was no seating left in the dining room, so we went upstairs to the Terrace -- which should have been our first choice, because it was very pleasant. My friends and I were looking for a place to eat dinner on Friday night, and unfortunately, it was a bit impossible to get a table in the city center without a reservation. So we went to Vapiano because it wasn't too packed. This was my first time in this branch, and I decided to get a salami pizza and glass of Amarone wine. The food was fresh and delicious as always. I usually don't like salami, but I gobbled my pizza all up. We sat upstairs in the corner of the lounge area by the window and had a lovely view of the plaza across the street. Not sure what building it was, but the rooftop was lined with statues and looked beautiful when lit up at dusk. read more

I got the strawberry spinach, which would've been delicious if not for the sauce. I ordered it with raspberry-maple sauce, which was not for me. I did not really enjoy the salad, but I was able to finish it. The pizza was very light and not at all oily. It had a thin crust and was very good. Suggested by a friend, as it would give everyone lots of choices, I met a group of friends here for lunch. Since it was Friday, I hoped to make a reservation, but no such luck at this place - you just need to claim your seat, and for lunch on a Friday, you need to be a little ruthless. More seating is upstairs, but it was all filled up. When you walk in, you are handed a card, which you put any orders onto. There are a number of stations - salad, pizza, pasta, drinks. I stood in the salad line just before the lunch rush started. I had the Insalata Nizza - okay, but the tuna was kind of mushy and the olives were the gross ones from cans instead of Nicoise olives. The bread was tasty. Friends ordered pizza - for this, you receive another card that buzzes when your pizza is ready. I had a slice of one - good toppings, but not a very good crust. We all got our food at different times and it was quite noisy inside - not a relaxing lunch. This would maybe an okay place for a solo lunch, but I just wasn't a fan of the concept. read more

Ok Vapiano is more like a fast food style restaurant, but I like it! Wouldn't take a date there, but for a quick good lunch or dinner it is super! This one at Bellevue comes in Handy for lunch as they also do take away and for dinner before going to the movies. I love the Carbonara pasta and it is always so yummy!! Only bad thing is that the cooks at the counter seem always annoyed and also due to the noise in the kitchen I don't always get what they are saying making them more annoyed... guess they are really stressed so I'll let it pass! read more

I wanted to give it 4 stars because I love this concept! However, I had to deduct a star for pricing.. after all, this is supposed to be a fast-food type of concept. Pasta dishes made fresh in front of you! To be honest, you don't get this in the states (that I'm aware of) unless it's a Mongolian grill type of place. But made to order pastas, pizzas and salads! What a nice concept! The ingredients used are fresh, and creative... Walk in, and get a Vapiano cash card. Then proceed to place your order, provide the cash card so the chef can load your order onto your card (which now holds the bill), and proceed to devour dish! Finish by paying at the cashier on your way out, and boom! It's over! Great concept, but a bit overpriced! read more

To me, excellent customer service is something that, with good management and training, a business, and particularly a hospitality business, can easily provide at no cost to the business! It's a quality ingredient that you don't have to buy. So why not provide excellent customer service... consistently!?! This is one of my pet peeves as a paying customer and one that I've slowly had to adapt to, after living in Switzerland for over 3 years. Nonetheless, my expectations remain. On my recent visit to Vapiano, I had a bad customer service experience when trying to order a pizza. For this reason, I won't be back. The Vapiano concept tries to make good food affordable with a counter-service approach, but it isn't quite yet refined. I often wait 15 minutes in line to to order pasta or salad. This time, my wife had her pasta 10 minutes before I had my pizza, so it didn't quite work this time either. Pizza is OK, but I'm spoiled by Don Leone and La Baracca. Pasta is usually great. Pasta and pizza! Express Italian fast food service. Love the carbonara but it is tasteless without putting extra salt on it. My first Vapiano visit was in Germany and I totally like the idea as it is quick and delicious. Love the atmosphere and interior deco in this restaurant, a place to hangout BUT the manager need to do something with the air condition/ventilation. The restaurant is full of smoke, oil the moment u stepped in - yea all the cooking and pizza baking. Sigh, this is a big drawback when come to enjoying a meal. Price wise is good as it is around 19-26 for a bowl of pasta... Various sauces and topping to choose from. The best I guess is the handmade pasta! You can also buy the uncooked pasta to take home! It is one of those concept restaurants, where you get an account card, then order at the food station, wait for the food and then pay at the exit. That is all fine. If you order pizza you get a pager that tells you when the food is ready. They serve a few own mixed cold beverages like white tea with elderwoodflower, quite tasty. Unfortunately I have to give them -1 point for the service. Besides a long queue at 18:00, which is understandable, it was also a challenge of 10 minutes to get a closed bottle of warm coke exchanged for a cold one. Down to the usual discussion of. Yummy, fast and fun concept. How to get food here? 1) pick up a card from the host/hostess, 2) line up and check out the menu for what you want to order, 3) order with the chef(s) and tap your card at the card reader when the chef enters in your order, 4) take your order from the chef and go sit down and eat! 5) go to the cashier and give them your card to pay. Easy peasy. The pizza is quite sizable, I couldn't finish it by myself. They cook the pastas al dente and we had the carbonara with linguini and bacon. Very yummy. Surprisingly decent for a chain. A friend wanted to eat something right away and this was one of the first places we came across. When you go in, each person gets a card and you walk to a bunch of different stations to get your food. There is a pasta bar, salad station, pizza station, drink bar, etc. At each station, they put what you ordered on your card. When you have all your food, you sit and eat wherever you want. When you are done, you bring your card to the front and pay the balance. Kind of a cool idea. I had some kind of duck pasta stir-fry with pasta. Not too bad. I would probably not got back because I usually prefer eating at local establishments while traveling, but for what the place is, it was decent. read more

I first tried Vapiano in Chicago and I have to say I really liked the concept of the whole place however the food didn't really leave a good enough impression for me to want to go back BUT here in Zürich the Vapiano has the same concept but the food is good. Yes for all you "besserwisser" the Carbonara is made which cream instead of an egg but if I put my "Zürich hate" on I thought it was a good value for money and even though it was not an authentic carbonara its tasted very good! As with everything in Switzerland, prices were at least 2x more expensive than in Germany. The menu is also different than in Germany. I got a pasta with tomato sauce. For some reason, it just wasn't as tasty as the pasta I've had from Vapiano in Frankfurt. I got chili and garlic like I usually do in Germany, but it ended up being a little too spicy, to the point that the spiciness overpowered the other flavors. I always got chili and garlic in the Frankfurt location, but I never found it too spicy. The pasta was also only lukewarm instead of steaming hot. Maybe I just came on an off-day. Still, this is an inoffensive fast-casual restaurant with a pleasant upstairs dining area. read more

I am always confused when I go to Vapiano. It was confusing in Boston, where it's all in English, and extra confusing here where it's l in German. We ordered pizza then waited awkwardly for a seat to open up. Many others seemed to be in the same boat - albeit it was Friday night. My pizza was fine - nothing special but certainly not bad. For the price though - over 20 francs - I wanted something more special, and at the very least, a guaranteed spot to sit down. Cold pizza? New Vapiano innovation? Stopped by at 8:15 to pick up a 'quick' pizza after a day out. There was no wait to order so took a few minutes to decide on the 'special' Pizza Perla (fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, rucola, prociutto - really sounded mouth-wateringly delicious) then proceeded to wait 20 mins for it - the box wasn't very hot, but did't think much of it since the pizza was folded over. A few minutes later at home imagine the disappointment opening the box to find a room temp dough filled with refrigerator cold items. Well I soon learned from the manager, when I called to alert them. that this pizza is supposed to be cold. What?!? Cold pizza?!? I guess I've been really out of touch on the pizza front. The manger insisted that if I wanted the pizza warm that I should have asked for it. Now that I've learned my lesson, I see that it was surely my obligation as customer to be fully up to date on this new cold pizza innovation. I do value Vapiano's unique concept of customers having it their way, but obviously missed the ordering instructions that one should specify wanting a hot pizza. I do like to learn something new each day, so I appreciate that the gladly fulfilled my wish by providing me with this new tidbit of information. Finally to round out this exceptional customer service experience, he hung up on me! although I'm sure it must just have been a problem with my phone line. Well I guess I should be grateful since that gave me more time to warm up the pizza to make it half edible, as I've yet to get used to this new innovative cold pizza.
