I called up today to ask for help with an old truck ignition, it wouldn't turn to the forward run position so I could change the cylinder, I tried for two days before calling them. I had done business with Van's for about 10 years and always received great service. I had used them as the vendor for our corporate and my personal accounts. Last year, the owner retired and sold the business to new owners. I recently had 2 keys made by the new owner and he charged me $50 for the keys plus a credit card fee. I was stunned but paid because I didn't ask about pricing before the keys were cut. Just for comparison, I stopped at Ace Hardware the same day and had the same key duplicated for $3.59. Van's charge nearly 7 times the cost of the keys from Ace. They have lost my trust and business. read more

We lost the keys to our car (ignition and lock) and came here to have one made. They made us a key for $100 and instructions to program it to our car (took half and hour and it was SO easy) So, the price was great. One of the guys who worked there was really rude, but the lady and the other guy who helped us were nice. I just hate it when people have bad customer service, and the one guy was being rude to his coworkers in front of us and was kind of ignoring us. Needed to get a car remote programmed and a new car key made. Vans was extremely nice on the phone, and even suggested I check the battery on the remote before bringing it over, in case it was a bad battery instead of a programming issue. I called ahead and they told me to come by in an hour when the locksmith would be back - I appreciate a business that values their customers' time. When I arrived, I was there only 10 minutes. Super easy and extremely inexpensive, especially compared to the dealerships that charge $70+ for programming! Vans only charged me $20 and ~$4 for the key. So this was a happy ending to an unpleasant surprise. Here's what happened: My daughter lost one of two keys we received when we bought the Jeep. I thought, 'no big deal', assuming I could up to the local hardware store and have a copy made. Not so fast, Buckwheat! It turns out the Jeep has a special key with a microchip in it, requiring a special computer to enter a secret code and synchronize the key with the car. A little research on-line revealed you can program a third key yourself, using the car's computer - BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE TWO ORIGINAL KEYS! If you have lost one, your are about to enter a lost key nightmare. Why didn't the dealer tell us when we bought the car to get a third key made, just in case we lose one? My guess is, if they don't tell you how expensive replacement keys are, you won't really think about it until you need one. And at that point, most people figure they have no choice but to go to the dealer to get a new one made. You see, a Jeep dealer is more than happy to have you bring the Jeep in, cut and program a new key for you, but this will cost you a minimum of $200! Maybe as much as $300, depending on the dealer! HOLY PRICE GAUGING, BATMAN! I'm pretty sure the key provided by a dealer is made out of ordinary plastic and metal, not silver or gold. Not even silver or gold plated. So why $200 - $300 to make a replacement key for the one you lost? Dealer profit is the only answer. So I called several locksmiths, but they could not help me. Two of them referred my to Van's Locksmith Service in Aurora. After discussing my situation on the phone with them, I brought in my special micro-chip key blanks ordered on-line, and they cut and programmed them for me. The new keys work GREAT! And Van's charged me $50 to cut and program two keys. A dealer would have charged me four to six times that. Very pleased with Van's service and the end result. read more

Worst customer service ever. My lock service was done by a younger guy, who seemed to be really nice. He changed out our lock at a pretty reasonable price. After 6 months, the lock wouldn't open or lock, so we called them to see if we can get someone out to fix it. They denied that fact that they installed this lock (even with our receipt), and that they weren't responsible for any of the damages. They even rejected coming out to fix the lock (we were going to pay for what needed to be fixed). We had to call a different locksmith to come out and fix the lock and it cost me $300 (almost double the installation). The new locksmith told us that when the installation was done, the locksmith had not lined up the locks correctly and that the locks breaking down was inevitable. I called back to let them know that this had happened, and the guy that answered the phone denied any kind of responsibility and instead, yelled and hung up on me. He kept repeating "I have three customers on the other line. I don't have time for this". They MAY be nice when giving you the installation or selling you their products, but I have never faced this bad of service EVER for wanting some kind of help after their foul work/installation. read more

My son had his wallet, car key fob and house key stolen over the weekend. We removed the deadbolt and doorknob and took them to Van's for rekeying. I'll definitely use Van's again. They managed to make a copy of my ancient, worn out car key which took nearly an hour! They were courteous, professional and did a great job. They also charge about half what the dealer charges to program new keyless entry fobs. I was also considering purchasing some other lock items for my home and they actually advised against it because they felt I didn't honestly need the items I was considering. I very much appreciate their honesty. It may have cost them a sale in the short run but in they've gained my loyalty in the long run. read more

Pricing was reasonable. Had a Ford Focus' driver side front door handle break. The doors were all locked and the only door we could get unlocked was the door with the broken handle. For those of you who are not aware this particular model of the Focus (maybe all of them for all I know) only has a keyslot in the driver side door. Now typically if you turn the key in a driver side keyhole and hold it all the doors will unlock or lock depending on which way you turn it. That's another feature Ford didn't put on this model. AND they didn't yet have the 'rear seat release knobs' to allow access to the cabin from the trunk. (The Keyless Entry FOBs to the car broke within months of buying the car new and my parents never replaced them( Luckily instead of paying all the money for tow trucks and the dealership my mom called Van's Lock & Key. She must have used them previously because she asked me to look up their name and number specifically. Elderly guy met us at about 6:30-7p and tried a few different things before he finally was able to get us into the car. (I guess he started with the less invasive tactics first and when those weren't doing it he moved to the door pry) Customer service was excellent and very pleased with everything. read more

Had some trouble with my Camry keys and the ignition. Locksmiths spent a lot of time examining my keys and diagnosing what the problem could be even though the car was stranded elsewhere. They spent almost an equal amount of time explaining to me and I left with advice on what to try on my own. The first suggestion was successful! This locksmith has helped me twice. Once I had an old skeleton key lock that had a broken piece inside. I took it in and they repaired it. They made a new leaf spring making the lock fully functional. Another time I had locked myself out of my house and they came within 20 minutes got me inside in 5 and only charged me $75. read more

Wish I could do zero stars.I had keys locked in my car. I did the online scheduling with Van's and never heard back (even though it said I would within 1/2 hour). I then called them almost 2 hours later and the man who answered was rude to me. I could tell he was not going to be friendly the minute he answered the phone- he must be having a bad day. I told him my issue and he asked me a question which I didn't clearly hear so I said "sorry?" and he, in an annoying and rude way said "What kind of car??" Never again. read more

I just bought a house down the street and wanted to get all of my awesome 60 year old patina-covered doorknobs re-keyed. The big box store wouldn't do it, because they were "bound by law" or some stupid crap they told me. I first received excellent service when I popped into Van's for an estimate, and to see if it was something they could do. I was treated with the respect and kindness you will only receive at a small business. I came back the next day with my doorknobs. While I was waiting for the re-key to be done, I overheard excellent customer service on the phone, and witnessed the same great customer service given to a few walk-ins. I love that you can look around the shop and just know it has been there for decades. I had driven past this place hundreds of times, and never thought twice. I got 2 doorknobs re-keyed and 4 extra keys cut for only $28. Maybe I got the pretty girl discount, but I am pretty sure they just charge extremely reasonable rates. Both knobs work, and also do all 4 keys. I will be back next time I need anything lock or key related. read more
