I had an awful experience here. I chose vanity because of the high yelp reviews, but i was extremely disappointed by my results. Don't get me wrong, everyone was extremely nice, but the work was awful. The other stylists even kept coming over to see and were complimenting my stylist on how it looked! Somebody shouldve known and stepped in. My natural hair is a dark dirty blonde color, but I was looking to go blonde for the summer. At my first visit, I paid for a full bleach, but left with highlights. The next day I decided it wasnt light enough so I came back and she bleached my hair again, this time all over. I had to pay again, but just for the product. I was slightly annoyed by this because I showed her pictures of what I wanted the first time (see attached) and she completely missed what I was going for, not my fault. My hair was destroyed from bleaching it so much. I didnt know any better, but the stylist should have. My hair was extremely yellow and the roots were completely unblended and harsh (see pictures). My stylist even asked me if she could skip drying my hair at the end of my appointment because she was in a rush to leave. If im paying you that much then that is not an option! Come to find out, it was probably a cop out for how damanged my hair was because my hair wouldnt dry for another 24 hours because of the damage! It was falling out when I tried to brush it. I had to come back a THIRD TIME to blend the roots and was still not pleased (see picture with hair up). I had to go to a whole other salon to fix this bad hair job. Waste of hundreds of dollars!!! She offered me a free trim at a later date, and gave me a free hair mask, probably because she knew how damaged my hair was. I appreciated that, but still not worth the damage. My usual hairdresser just up and moved which I hate so I decided to try this place. Charity was good but I have never paid $55 just for a haircut before and my hair was already short. I like to keep it short but I was use to paying $20 for a cut and $30 for a shampoo, cut and style but guess I may not find that again. I just can't see paying $55 when my hair is already short and just needs trimming and shaping up plus they expect a tip and this is in Garner, not Raleigh or Cary! I won't be going back. read more

The store before was a barbershop and beauty salon but the new one is only a salon. Plenty of parking spaces, store nice and clean with more importantly FREE SNACKS!!! I had my haircut somewhere else by someone new and asked for layers and got a shelf instead. I saw Stacy Gagne to fix it today and she was very good at listening and looking at what I had wanted and vocalized all the things she was doing throughout my haircut, letting me face the mirror the whole time. I'm a single mom and had to bring my impatient 2 year old daughter along with me and she was very patient with both me and my daughter. I just had to write an update about our most recent visit, as this time, my daughter decided at the last minute to join me. Kristin was booked all day long but another stylist graciously agreed to fit her in for a few highlights. Her hair looked absolutely gorgeous - perfect color, straightened and beautiful! Of course, my cut was absolutely wonderful, as usual. I just can't get over how brilliant Kristin is with color - she uses highlights, lowlights, and toner to round it all out. Amazing! This most recent visit was especially notable because I missed my original appointment and Kristin not only fit me in as early as possible, but offered to call me in the event of a cancellation. I've been going to Vanity consistently for over 2 years and have had excellent service throughout. Two thumbs up for Vanity! read more

BEWARE!! I had a terrible experience here. I came in for color, highlights with a cut. When I got home O looked i the mirroe and the color/highlights were not even and the cut was a chop job. So, I came in the next day to voice my concerns and the anwser was I could have the same girl try and fix it or she could write me a check. I just wanted someone else to fix my uneven cut, made a same appt. that day at 1:00 pm only to receive a call that my initial appt. was only for color with highlights and I wasn't charged for a cut. They wanted me to pay an additional $50 to have another stylist correct my hair! Unbelievable, they screwed up my haircut (for free) then wanted me to pay more money to have it fixed. Never, will I go back here nor tell recommend them to anyone either, you'd have better luck at a barber shop. read more

I called ahead of time and asked if the stylists specifically cut curly hair - I was told that they were all trained to cut curly hair so I decided to trust this statement and see what would happen. I told the stylist I just wanted a few brown highlights and a cut to style my curls. I told her I wanted to keep as much of the length as possible. I showed her pictures of what I wanted. I asked if she understood and she indicated she understood. I asked her to cut with the curl and to add clear distinct layers, not blend all the layers together - I told her that was the mistake most stylists made and I did not want that to happen. I made every intension to overcommunicate what I needed. By the end - she had taken off a minimum of 4 inches - after it took me about 1-2 years to grow it out to the length I wanted. She left no layers in my hair and some chunks heavier than others and with curly hair - this is a major problem. The color on top turned out fine, but the color on the bottom turned out slightly green and gray. I asked her what we needed to do to fix it and she said she couldn't do anything but cut it off. I told her absolutely not to do that because I needed the length and would figure out another way. About this time, I learned that she had another person (a relative, not a customer) she was working on which is why I felt like I was just waiting from one station to the next - not being told what was happening or how long I would be sitting there with my head over the sink. I was super uncomfortable, the wash had gotten water on my face and in my ears, and I had to guess what was going on and where she was. After I was back in the chair and she had started to try to blowdry it (which I did not ask for and she did not check - because I wanted to see it in it's natural state) - so I asked her to stop. She left to work on the other woman. She came back and started preparing for me to leave and I respectfully told her I just needed the style to have the layers I asked for - even if I was willing to handle the bad coloring on my own. I was already pretty upset at this point but was hoping she could at least fix the style a little bit. I sat back in the chair and tried to explain how I wanted it cut. She asked me if I wanted to cut it. I said no - I just needed distinct layers. I thought she was adding the layers like I asked, but ended up taking another 2 inches off to get rid of the green miscoloring. By that point, it felt like a third of my hair was now gone and the color was still messed up. And I had said - I was getting my hair done for a wedding that weekend... By this point, it was about 3 1/2 hours later, everyone had left so I couldn't talk to a manager or the store owner, or ask for someone else to fix the problem. I was heartbroken and felt clearly traumatized. She walked me up to the front to pay and leave. I paid the $140+ and left a small tip because I didn't want to be rude and I didn't feel like I had any options. I thought maybe I was just overreacting and I would give it a day or so to see if I was imagining how bad it was. Later, I tried to curl it and it ended up looking like a badly shaped triangle - like a boy haircut done at home - which is exactly what I asked her NOT to do and would happen if she cut it the same as stylists did for straight hair. My hair curly was originally down to my mid back and after this cut - it now sits around my shoulders. I did not want to leave this review because I feel this is a reflection and mistakes made on the part of the stylist, not because the studio is a bad place. I sincerely believe that there are very likely great stylists here and they deserve good recognition. I just did not receive a good experience and am quite upset that even after I communicated this to them through a private message that I heard no reply, almost a week later. I do not feel this was professional, a fair value paid, or in the best interest of the salon. I ended up going to another location for an emergency fix and asked another stylist's opinion. She agreed 100% that how it was cut - even if the layers were even - was not done well. And she easily removed most of the green with spending a few minutes on it. I paid another $80 to get it cut evenly and in decent shape. It helped to overcome the trauma from this experience, but it will take me another year minimum to regrow it to the length that works best for my hair. read more

I was quoted $85-100 to remove a (very faded) color depositing conditioner, get a toner and haircut. At the end of the appointment, I was charged $120 (before tip). I really don't understand how the price can increase all of a sudden when nothing was added to the appointment. I also think $120 for a quick color strip, 5 minute toner, and haircut (no highlights/coloring at all) is quite overpriced, but maybe I'm spoiled from my home salon. All in all, that much money and my hair looks just about the same as walking into the salon- I'll just color strip at home and save $120 for actual coloring at another salon. read more

I'll let the photos speak for the quality of work I received here... I have been here 3 times and the last 2 times were equally disappointing experiences and the owner Amanda Thompson was my hair stylist. The first time was ok. The second time I got simple highlights in foils. The color of the highlights were awful- an orange brassy color and I had lines and splotches everywhere from there the foil had been creased. She did fix it.... This last time once again I asked for more blonde highlights all over and instead, she lighted my roots (on her own without us discussing it) and they turned out a very red brown rusty color! She told me if I didn't like it she would fix it (again ) and I had to leave town so when I made an appointment a couple weeks after she said she did not remember them being a rusty color (I also sent her pics) and that I would be charged for an appointment to fix it. This is a trouble business practice on her end. I will never go back as I have wasted my own time and money more than once. Very unhappy! read more

This place is not your typical hair salon. All of the stylists work independently and just rent out their space from vanity. You are really only dealing with the stylists when it comes to prices and appointments. Without naming anyone In particular, I worked out pricing with my stylist in advance, and it changed and was more last minute and I didn't get what I thought I was getting. In reality all I can do is text her and tell her I'm not happy because vanity has nothing to do with the money or scheduling. It was cheaper than other places but all in all was not so happy with my updos. If you buy a gift card for here.. You are just giving a stylist money in advance, you can only use that GC for her services, not for product or any other service/stylist. read more

I really love my stylist Jordan and felt the service was great (pre COViD), but upon trying to return post my COVID vaccine was told masks aren't required and the stylist will wear them if requested by the customer. I feel that this is irresponsible and was very disappointed that no safety precautions are being put in place for stylist or customers. I won't be returning. read more

I recently went in for a Brazilian Blowout and cut with Jordan. I was SO nervous because I had a god awful cut in January that left me scarred. But LET. ME. TELL. YOU. Jordan is a Wonder Woman. She made magic happen with my hair. It's so soft, the frizz is gone, it's manageable now (I have very curly hair). AND, she gave me the best haircut I've had in years. I've been in that place for a few months where I know I want to leave my current stylist and find a new one, but that's a process that always stresses me out. I tend to look at a million reviews and then get overwhelmed and anxious and end up back at my regular spot. My idea at that point is typically this: I'm unhappy with my current stylist but at least she's predictable. HOWEVER based on the reviews here, I decided to give Vanity a try. I popped in two weeks ago and met Amy, who ended up being my stylist. Before coming in for my appointment, I described my goals for the color and cut. The owner set up the appointment for one week out, and they were super flexible with my schedule. At my color and cut this week, Amy completely transformed my too-blonde, brassy, muddy grown-out balayage into a rich and healthy all-over golden brown. The cut was exactly what I was looking for, since I'm in an in-between, growing out phase. Amy was personable but not overbearing, friendly and funny. Her skills are top-notch. The pricing was incredibly affordable, given the high level of expertise. I'm so relieved that I have a new salon and a stylist I can trust. I went to see a stylist (won't say her name to be nice) who recently relocated to this salon after losing her job at another salon. I had seen this stylist a few times for a little over 2 years at her past salon, and had one bad experience but chalked that up to a misunderstanding and she corrected it. I told her in advance on the phone that I wanted to be much "brighter", a much lighter blonde. After showing her photos and discussing and looking at pictures for 10 minutes, she stated "don't worry - you'll be brighter". After about 30 minutes, I looked at the colors she was highlighting my hair with and there was only one - when we discussed highlights with 2 different shades of blonde, a darker and a much lighter baby blonde. When I questioned her, the response was "don't worry - you'll have lighter pieces". How???? I wondered. Well, long story short, she did a touch up job- touched up my roots. No lighter. My hair is very thick and it is extremely disappointing because my appointments are 3-4 hours. And to walk away knowing I then have to do it all over again immediately to get what I asked for - ugh. Extremely frustrating ..... now I need to find a new hairdresser who listens to what the customer wants. Some of my friends think I am crazy when I tell them that I drive 2 1/2 hours to get my hair cut & colored by Kristi Ellis. Yes, it is a 2 1/2 hour drive but it is well worth it. When I arrive she greets me with a smile and treats me like royalty! If I have an idea that I want to try, she will tell me the truth about how it will look with my facial features. She absolutely loves her job and you can tell by the way she talks about hairstyles and people she has made look beautiful. I don't usually write reviews but I felt this was absolutely necessary. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Vanity Salon and Color Bar. I have been to Michelle Drake now for a few haircuts and colors and I could not be happier with the final product! Michelle is absolutely amazing at what she does. To make it even better she is a complete sweetheart and makes you feel so welcome and comfortable. My hair has turned out beautifully every time she has done it. I have gotten numerous compliments on how great the color is and I now have my younger sister (who has used the same salon for years) asking me for her number so she can set up an appointment. Again, I have nothing but great things to say about the salon and the great girls there and what a fabulous job Michelle has done on numerous occasions.
