On my last day in Sydney, I woke up early and high tailed it to the store. I got there when they just opened and decided to purchase items that would not melt easily, as I had to ship them to Hawaii. The sales person behind the counter was very help in my directing me to the items that would keep during air shipment. After choosing the goodies for my family, I decided to purchase the date and marzipan chocolate bar for my honey and myself. My only disappointment was that it was too early for ice cream. Yes, even for me. If not, I would have had an ice cream sandwich. Sigh... :(

Not fair. But, with the limited budget I have, I still go to Kakawa, who not only stocks amazing little mouthfuls of chocolates in a hundred flavours, at $1.90 each, but also stock chocolate and fruit jams, chocolate CD's (I assume they are called so only due to their shape), chocolate everything! And the difference with this one is you can watch them make it behind the counter. If you don't catch them at it one day, then you'll just have to come in the next and try again. So if you're a chocolate man or woman, come and see what's happening here. So amazing.

The House of Chocolates has been here as long as I remember - and I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs. It still has an old-fashioned sweet shop kind of feel, I always expect some jolly fat man to come out from the back proffering a tray of freshly made chocolate treats*. (*Note: This has never happened.) We used to come here sometimes after a day at the beach for little hand-made chocolate penguins for a treat, so I have happy memories associated with this place. Add some choc endorphins to that and this is my Happy Place. The chocolates are hand-crafted by Sydney chocolatiers but they also have a small number of imported sweets. My favourites: chilli and salted chocs, and of course the Happy Place penguins.

This old fashioned sweet store will conjure up memories of what life was like when you were a kid. There is so much variety and choice from local Aussie treats to fancy chocolaty imports. They have lollie jars, and sugary options are well as finely finessed hand made goodies. Prices start from $1 and could easy go into the hundreds depending what type of chocolate addict you are. I find this a fun place to try a bit of chocolate experimentation. Why not treat your taste buds to something new by purchasing a new flavour. It's a fun place to bring kids and kids at heart... I would suggest stopping in just to browse, but if you can leave without purchasing something than you have a lot more will power than I do...

When I say this boutique is little, I mean tiny. I'm guessing most people window shop (unless they already know what they want) before entering to purchase because you couldn't really fit more than five or six people tops. Unlike most chocolate stores where they have hoards of chocolates stacked on top of each other in a seemingly endless supply, Just William Chocolates display only a handful of pieces onto a small dishes of each type of flavour. Some have two types of flavours on one dish. When you do actually go inside there's a few more choices that weren't out on the window display. If you're looking for a present and wanting to get these chocolates boxed, the packaging is well designed and they have a great variety of ribbon to choose from. I just wanted to try a couple that caught my eye from the window. The caramel fudge was amazing as it had pieces of ginger through it. Also the 'honeycomb bark' was great too. I should've gotten a bigger piece!

The shop window, laden with delicate rows of glossy brown orbs, promised respite, sustenance and chocolate-fixes from what had seemed to be a life without chocolate. Stepping over the threshold, a fabulous cocoa-rich waft tantalised my nostrils. Oh finally, I thought, my chocolate-famine has come to an end. I enthusiastically started pointing out truffles, buttons, bombes, ganaches and pralines that I wanted to buy. I liked their witty names - the B52 Bombe, for example; their hand-written labels; the brightly coloured ribbons and exquisite packaging. Of course, the chocolates tasted as delicious as they looked - no surprises there. They are expensive, at around $12 a kilo. But you have to pay for quality, and in a climate that isn't conducive to chocolate, I think they're worth every dollar. These are the type of chocolates that everyone loves to receive as a present. The packaging makes them even more wonderful. The choice that is available means there will be something for everyone - from the traditionalist who just wants a dark chocolate truffle to the fruit bat who wants a strawberry fondant - Just William can cater to all your chocolate desires.
