This cute little box store on boutique-heavy William St, Paddington is routinely gawked at like one would do at ... Adriano Zumbo's café in Balmain. Still, they're very different in style. This slightly austere and enormously elegant store clearly prescribes to the overblown theory that 'less is more'. Rather than an avalanche of chocolate inside the store there's an allocated number for each - nestled nicely on little trays - that altogether comprise many various types (hard, soft, creamy, fruity, nutty, milk, dark, white). Our favourite ones were the hard toffee chocolate but perhaps check with your dentist first - they really weren't kidding! The best time to go here is during holiday season - Easter is especially great - but it is a smart idea to also go any time you're in the area. Definitely standing room only.

This very cute chocolate shop on very cute Williams Street is an institution in Sydney. The handmade chocolates are both exquisite and delicious. In fact they have gained such a reputation that Just William Chocolates ships internationally! This boutique chocolatier is just as famous for its beautiful packaging, which if you're a lovely packaging sucker like me you'll be totally enchanted by. The treats on offer here may be a little on the pricy side but they do make a fantastic gift. You can spend up to $80 on 30 or so chocolates (wrapped in a rose, literally) but if you've got a smaller budget you can get just a cute a pack of 9 chocolates for $20.

I almost walked right past Happy Lab, thinking it was a makeup store. How wrong I was!…read more Happy Lab is a candy store, believe it or not! And they display their candy in test tubes and beakers, which can be quite misleading if you're not on the alert. They have all kinds of strange, counter-intuitive packaging... like flavoured popcorn in what appear to be milk cartons! Chocolate-covered nuts in beakers! Candy-coated chocolate in test-tubes! It's magnificent. The sales assistants strut around in their lab coats, presumably to further confuse (and excite) unsuspecting patrons. With such an awesome idea and execution, the candied treats are, of course, a little more expensive than average, but that was to be expected. This is a great once-in-a-while indulgence.

Rest assured the contents of Happy Lab located at Bondi Junction Westfield are all legal. Happy Lab has taken a novel approach to the presentation of lollies and other sweet delights by packaging them in science beakers, test tubes and milk cartons. The packaging does make them presentable to make an excellent gift for those of us suffering from sweet teeth, but keep in mind if purchasing for yourself, you are also paying for the fancy packaging. Happy Lab is about much more than packaging though with offerings such as: Alberts, which are hazelnuts coated in Belgian chocolate, then coated in sugar or Karma Nutras, which are almonds coated in variety of flavours including vanilla and crème brulee. Also if you want to pretend you're being healthy you can go for the strawberry, apple or mango Munch Crunch. They are priced high, but still with what is being offered Happy Lab is setting the temptation resistance bar fairly high.

The House of Chocolates has been here as long as I remember - and I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs. It still has an old-fashioned sweet shop kind of feel, I always expect some jolly fat man to come out from the back proffering a tray of freshly made chocolate treats*. (*Note: This has never happened.) We used to come here sometimes after a day at the beach for little hand-made chocolate penguins for a treat, so I have happy memories associated with this place. Add some choc endorphins to that and this is my Happy Place. The chocolates are hand-crafted by Sydney chocolatiers but they also have a small number of imported sweets. My favourites: chilli and salted chocs, and of course the Happy Place penguins.

This old fashioned sweet store will conjure up memories of what life was like when you were a kid. There is so much variety and choice from local Aussie treats to fancy chocolaty imports. They have lollie jars, and sugary options are well as finely finessed hand made goodies. Prices start from $1 and could easy go into the hundreds depending what type of chocolate addict you are. I find this a fun place to try a bit of chocolate experimentation. Why not treat your taste buds to something new by purchasing a new flavour. It's a fun place to bring kids and kids at heart... I would suggest stopping in just to browse, but if you can leave without purchasing something than you have a lot more will power than I do...

Or envy the huge aging box encompassing even more choice cuts! and when the cold bites and/or the basket fills, exit the cold room for other non chilled products! hoofs, hearts, liver, pet mince, tongue? the frozen section will amaze! they also have cheeses, cured meats, sauces and other produce. as for the meats you buy, a full range of bbq paraphernalia will get you ready immediately for a cook off! once ready to check out, the quick moving line will get you out the door in no time. just grab cardboard boxes, if you need, for your bountiful loot and don't forget to return that jacket you took when you entered! it was definitely nice to meat you!

When you get here, the entrance is something else...literally like walking into a giant Meat Locker! They have jackets for you at the front to keep you warm while you struggle to choose your cut of meat from the enormous selection...Brilliant! Then there is the selection...again just amazing, memorizing, so much to choose from! So are the prices... High quality meat at affordable prices! The Australian Meat Emporium truly feels like a wholesaler that is open to the public, not just one of those catchy or quirky gimmicks. Just like their website states: "Australian Meat Emporium says is a retail outlet selling the finest Bindaree Beef products directly to the public at affordable prices". I'm just not sure what Bindaree Beef is...guessing something good? They also work "very closely with producers of other species of meat such as Cowra Lamb, Arcadian Organic Meat, Rangers Valley and B.E Campbell's Bruemar Pork." Australian Meat Emporium used to be called Establishment 218...just in case your were wondering
