Hiroki-san was very courteous and quick in his email replies to book an appointment. He's in high demand so he requires almost a month's advanced notice to get an ideal time. When he arrived and did an initial test, the piano was flat to the point that an A was registering as a G. He said he would try to tune it but with the risk that a string might snap as he did multiple passes at it. I have no idea how piano tuning works and agreed to a more complex option on his price list. He cleaned and vacuumed my piano and was super patient with all my questions. My piano was returned to proper tuning after he worked for 3 hours straight tuning by ear then playing a little bit. Hiroki-san also gave me some maintenance tips and a card to lookup my client file for future annual tunings (which I will be adhering to here on out). I was lucky to find Semei Lee on Google and am extremely satisfied with his reasonable rate, attitude, and professionalism. He charged me $100 for my upright in Vancouver. He said my piano sounded low but didn't lecture me about being a bad piano owner. Compared to other tuners, he doesn't loudly pound the piano while tuning. Semei tunes by ear, listening for harmonic beats. He used to work for Tom Lee tuning pianos, and he also tunes pianos for competitions and recordings. I can't wait for him to come next year after my piano stabilizes when he will adjust my piano for tone. I am very happy with his work; had I found him on Yelp earlier, I would have called him sooner.

Our house is unusual and required a site visit from the moving company (Music Box Piano Movers who were terrific) to ensure the instrument would be able to fit through the front door as well as an interior narrow passageway. I hired these company based on a personal recommendation. One of the movers was great, and of the…read moremovers was unusually careless all day and dragged the upholstered side of my couch through some grass and forcefully threw boxes around, breaking some of my belongings. This resulted in, among other things, breaking a full-frame Sony camera body (approximately $1000 replacement cost). The other mover seemed a bit apologetic for the guy, but that doesn't fix my broken camera or any other damage that was done by the careless mover. I had everything fragile wrapped in padding, but a violent enough blow will damage anything, and one of the movers was throwing stuff around pretty violently. I've moved around a lot and have occasionally had things broken on international or cross-country moves where your possessions are handled by a lot of people and tossed onto some truck and you'll find that there's a foot deep puncture in one of the boxes, but I've never had this kind of damage from a local move. I would've been surprised to see this kind of damage from such a short move if I hadn't seen how one of the movers was treating my items. Dragging the cloth side of the couch across the grass was the most egregious looking thing, but in terms of replacement cost, throwing boxes around turned out to be the worse problem. Their advertising copy reads "Our experience with moving unique, costly and fragile furniture mreans that you can trust us with your belongings. Expensive and heavy items will be handled with special care". If that's special care, I'd hate to see what it looks like when they don't take special care.
