Dropped off my Nikon DSLR for repair. The process was easy, and the repair was on time. Camera works great after the repair. ...I noticed two issues with the functioning of the camera a couple months later and took it back in - it was easily checked on the spot this time and I was embarassed to find out one "issue" was actually due to a sticky drink splashed on the camera and the other "issue" actually ME not understanding how to use one of the camera's features properly and it actually worked fine... oh dear. Got a free lesson out of it. Service was great both visits and I will go back if I have future issues needing actual repair! read more

Please review all reviews how terrible they are. In my case, Nikon D600 was almost new with shutter count only 2109. I dropped camera bag and auto focus did not work. But manual focus worked great and all other functions were perfect. I brought it to Vancam. They charged $35 plus tax for inspection. And sent invoices total $330.40 if they fix. Even If not fix, charge extra charge $60 plus tax on the first inspection fee. The guy was very unkindly and rude. Even said Dam camera and yelled bring me court to me that unbelievable when I heard . when I visited to check my camera, it was totally problem that its screen was not turned on. The guy said it took 3 days but still under fixing. I was very worried about totally gone. I gave to repair autofocus but worried totally gone. I asked to back with the original condition when I gave to them that was perfect working only except autofocus. When I received calling and visited again. The guy said it is fixed as original condition but could not fixed autofocus. And asked pay extra $67.20. Very funny because totally should pay over $100 even if they could not fix autofocus. Anyway I paid anyway and tried not to write negative review. But totally upset because I found shutter count is 85,333 Nikon D610 that was 2,109 Nikon D600. Obviously they change shutter box and never told me. Nightmare! Unbelievable! Waste money over $100 without autofocus fix and almost new shutter bow with count 2,109 Nikon D600 was replaced as 85,333 count Nikon different model D610 shutter box without any explanation. Also found lots of dot at photo. The Sensor was contaminated and deteriorated. Wasting over one hundred dollars for just checking. But the autofocus was not fixed at all. Shutter count was changed from 2,109 to 85,333 within 2 weeks during at Vancam. Also from D600 to D100. Photo were cleaned but now lots of dots as attached. Nightmare. Warning! read more

VANCAM IS THE BEST! My Canon R6 body came unscrewed from the harness mount and dropped to the floor at my last wedding. I had a 3 day shoot the following weekend and was concerned about the damage and cost of the repair and how long it would take to get it back. I called Vancam and they said to bring it in right away. The owner, Bir WAS THE BEST. He assessed it and fortunately for me, had the part on hand to replace the screen on the back of the camera. He had it all fixed and ready for pick up the next day. Imagine you needed your car fixed. If the mechanic said "Sure, that'll be $500 and I'll need to hit the door with a hammer a couple times," you would probably find another mechanic. Unfortunately, this is one of the only Nikon repair places in town. They fixed the functional aspect of my lens just fine, but it came back with horrendous scratches on the exterior. I emailed them immediately about this issue, asking if they had a suggestion to resolve this issue. There was no hint of an apology, just 'I'll check with the guy who worked on the lens when he's back.' That was 11 days ago. I'll consider taking down this review if they make an attempt at giving a hint of customer service, but till then I would recommend looking for another camera shop if you don't feel like having to repair your equipment from being repaired by these guys. read more

I had been looking to get a fairly simple (i thought) fix done on a camera stabilizer for half a year and could't find anyone in the city that would touch it. Camtex wanted to charge me $150 just to assess it!! Took it into Vancam and right away, they listened to my problem and took my info. Their assessment fee was much more fair. The next day, they called to say they had fixed it! Service was fast and fairly priced and the man (forgot to ask his name) was very nice and pleasant to talk to. I will go back here for all of my gear repair from now on. Very happy. read more

We took in a Sony point and shoot camera for a shutter button repair. I was told over the phone that I would get a quote within a day and, depending on parts, repaired within a week before I leave town for 4 months. I dropped off the camera and was told directly by Bir Arneja, the manager, that I would hear back with an estimate within 24-36 hours tops. This never happened. Three days later I call to ask and get told he's going to check with the technician and call me back "in 5 minutes" which never happened. I stopped by two days after that and was told that the technician was out of the office and that he still had to look at the camera to decide if he's "willing" to do the job. Isn't this why I paid a deposit and dropped it off? I asked for the camera back and a refund but was told the camera was at the technician's place but that he would be in that afternoon and I'd get a call "right away" about the status. This call never came so I called back at 5pm and got told the camera was still not on site and the technician hadn't shown up so I could come by "tomorrow" (the day I leave for 4 months) to get it. I then got a call back from the manager 10 minutes later telling me the camera indeed WAS on site and I could come pick it up. When confronted about all of this, both the manager and his lazy helper didn't care one bit to either make things right or apologize. When told directly we counted 5 times being lied to, the manager didn't flinch as this is obviously just routine operation for him. THIS IS THE WORST CAMERA REPAIR STORE EVER. Do not even go there. They rip you off. I asked for a little screw repair in my Canon G7X, literally needed 1 missing screw on the flip screen. The man in the shop told me that it's not only that screw from the outside, it's also a few screws from the inside that needed to be fixed. He said it will be $200.00, yes $200.00 for the real screw + some screws that he made up. In the result I asked my friend to look at it and see if it's indeed the case. My friend fixed it FOR FREE and it was truly just that one screw. THANK GOD I listened to my gut and turned away. Honestly, be very careful. These men are just trying to make some money. They might know cameras well, but I would check a few more places to compare their price with everyone else's. read more

Took my old Yashica 635 in. Shutter problem. I didn't use the repaired camera right away but every few months I put the shutter through its paces so that it wouldn't seize up. After a year or so (well beyond the warranty period) the shutter quit again. It's an inexpensive camera with a relatively simple shutter. They did a lousy job in my opinion. $135 down the drain. A lot of money for a pensioner. read more

I took my camera to VanCam to fix a sensor. They fixed the sensor, but ended up causing damage in the viewfinder in the process. They said it was not caused by them and that they would not fix it unless I paid $400 for them to service the damage they caused. I am furious, and cannot believe that this is the actual service that I received. DO NOT USE THIS STORE! If they damage any part of your equipment that is separate from what you went to get fixed, they will claim that it was like that before you went in. read more

I heard such good things about this camera repair place & drove all the way in from Port Coquitlam in rush hour traffic to have my favourite little Canon Power Shot fixed in time for a sunny holiday. Heartily recommend them I brought both my Nikkor 2.8 24-70 with a jammed helix and my Nikkor 70-200 2.8 with a bent aperture engagement lever on two separate occasions. Both repairs were done expediently (within 2 days), the service was informative and very friendly and importantly, I thought their repair charges were quite reasonable. In fact it would have cost me more in shipping charges to Nikon than my second repair which was done the day after I brought in my lens ! I needed some repairs to my canon 7D, Vancam gave me a clear and concise breakdown of my options and a detailed explanation of what could have caused the issue in the first place. I originally took my camera to Camtex, they charged me 50$ just to look at my camera! and then quoted my 450$ for repairs and cleaning. So I decided to get a 2nd opinion. Vancam fixed my camera for 150$ that's including the 35$ assessment fee which they deduct from the service cost. I went here to get my camera fix. I have a canon T3i and the main dial to change modes broke off. They quoted me 190$, for parts and labour. I dropped off my camera and 9 days later they called saying they can repair my camera for less! They can repair it with old parts they found. I paid 140$ and it took 10 days. This is a tricky one actually because I can't know for certain they did anything wrong but here's my story: I took my Canon 5D MkII to get the sensor cleaned and got it back in a couple of days looking great. The viewfinder was dust-free and a quick snap outside at the sky showed, when I got home, that the sensor was back to perfect. A week later I took the camera out to use properly and there was a an unfocussed image with a blurry black bar through the viewfinder. I opened it up to find the focussing screen rattling around lose inside. I took it back and they said they didn't even look at that part so it can't have been them but they put it back for me anyway. It was now scratched and lots of dust had got behind it. My viewfinder now looked awful though this doesn't affect the image its very annoying. I have a couple of problems with their claim it had nothing to do with them. 1. they said they didn't look at that part yet the viewfinder was cleaner when it came back so they must have done. 2. I've used this camera every week for about 3 years and this never happened until the week after they had it. Coincidences like this can happen so I MAY be wrong of course. They claimed the lens probably knocked against the screen release while being changed but I can't see that being possible. I strongly suspect they did clean behind the screen and didn't quite push it back up all the way when they were done. I won't take anything to them again but I just wish there was an alternative in Vancouver. I'm not happy about sending it all the way back to the east for a clean up in future. read more

I've been here a few times. Most recently, the issue was a broken pin on the flash card connector in my Canon XTi. The repair cost was a little over $100, which was reasonable, and they did it quickly so I could capture a few must-photograph family events later in the week. Along with some advice on inserting flash cards properly, they happily lent me a charged battery (I'd left mine at home) so I could test their fix before leaving. read more

Initially quoted 3-5 days. When following up a few weeks later the "technician" wasn't in so they mentioned they would call us back. No call back happened. When we finally called again (a week) later, they said they were just finishing up. Not one call from Vancam and it was 6 weeks before I was able to pick up my lens even though originally quoted about 3-5 days. When this was brought up with Vancam the response was that they were probably just waiting on a part. Was that really that difficult to inform the customer via phone call what the delay is? read more

This is a great, honest place. Let me tell you about my experience at CAMTEX, then about my experience HERE. CAMTEX I brought in a 5D Mark II for an assessment, which had the mysterious "error 20." The guy said it would cost $90 for an assessment. A few days later, I got a call from the same guy saying that it was an "electrical" issue that caused a "release signal cut off" and that it would cost $600. I told him I'd think about it since it seemed very expensive. I decided against the repair and went to Camtex to pick the camera up. I told the same guy that I wasn't interested in the repair, and he said, "Are you sure? It's only $500?" I immediately thought it was fishy, since he had told me it would cost $600 earlier, but didn't say anything. "So what are you going to do with it?" he asked me. I told him that I'd likely try to sell it. However, I wanted to take the camera to another repair shop for a second opinion first. I did not tell him this, but I did ask if I'd be able to get a printed report of the repairman's assessment on my camera so that I'd be able to have a copy of what was wrong. He seemed annoyed by this request. "There is no report," said the guy. "So what's wrong with it?" I asked. "We already told you on the phone." Pause. "So it's an electrical issue?" I asked. He grunted. "Yes. As we told you already, there's a problem with the release signal cut off." I wrote this down right away just in case I forgot. HERE I took my camera to Vancam, where it only costed $35 for an assessment. Within days, they told me that it was water damage, and that it would cost about $280 to fix. They said that they'd be able to subtract the $35 assessment fee from that repair cost too. I accepted. And when they charged me at the end, they provided a break down of the total cost, from the assessment fee, to the hours, to the kind of work that they did. At the end of the day, the repair cost was cheaper at Vancam ($280) than Camtex ($700) by $420. But the price is not the only reason you wouldn't go to Camtex: - Does not subtract your assessment fee to the repair. - Does not given you a written report - Is either unable to tell you what's wrong with your camera, or plain lying (Camtex: "Release signal cut off." Vancam: "Water damage." I'm pretty sure a camera repair shop would be able to tell you if you had water damage on your camera.) - Fluctuates on the repair fee depending on your desperation Thank you, Vancam. The VR (Vibration Reduction) of my Nikon lens was not working correctly recently. I took the lens to Vancam. They asked for and received $39 just to tell me, within 48 hours, what was wrong with the lens and how much it would cost to fix it. After just 3 hours they called me and said that the entire VR had to be replaced for $300 ( $299 to be exact) plus tax. They added that if I accepted their estimate, the $39 paid earlier would go toward the cost. I had bought the lens for $420 some 16 years ago. So, I didn't accept their estimate and took my lens back. The $39 was of course Not Refundable. Few days later I took the lens to another technician and told him the story with Vancam. He inspected the lens right away, unscrewed the screws at the bottom of the lens and honestly told me that that the problem with malfunctioning of the VR only was due to a loose pin. The VR of the lens was in a perfect condition, and there was no need to replace it. The entire procedure cost me a fraction of the price that had been asked for by Vancam. read more

I dropped my camera off to get the camera body and lens cleaned. When I got my camera back, all of my camera settings were reset to default. I shoot RAW images, it had been switched to JPEG Fine. For file naming I use my initials, this has been changed back to DSC_####.... super frustrating to shoot a bunch of stuff only to realize they had messed with my camera settings. And the older gentleman who seemed in charge of the place seemed horrifically tired of working there and was entirely displeased with having to service customers. I knew they were an honest bunch when I bought in my daughters camera to be fixed earlier in the year. Turned out, after some advice there was nothing wrong with the camera and I left with paying no money - with a solution to the problem- I was a happy bunny ! Amazing service! Living outside of the GVRD, it's hard to find professional service that won't take weeks for turn-around. Spoke to Vancam on Monday by phone, shipped in my old Nikon D40 for cleaning of the sensor/viewfinder and lens and had it back in hand by Friday! This saved us potentially having to make 2 hellish trips into Vancouver and weeks of waiting if we were to try to go through a local store (who would have apparently - eventually - shipped it to Vancam for servicing anyhow!). The only thing that could have made this a 5-star experience would have been if the return delivery was not (literally) Cash-On-Delivery..... credit card or cheque would have been much easier! So... I work in the service industry and I have never really liked it when people use yelp to bitch about things. I have always used it in a positive manner because it is impossible to know what it is like to walk a day in another persons shoes. There are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes that the average guest/customer doesen't see/understand. Under no circumstances. EVER should you ever give these guys a single dime of your hard earned money. I'm going to give the synopsis of my experience as briefly as possible. 1. Broke camera 2. Brought camera in to Vancam 3. Waited 2 weeks, no phone call or email. 4. Called. They said they had emailed me. Confirmed my name as something COMPLETELY wrong. 5.They asked if I could bring my battery in (i did bring my battery in, they lost it... and then miraculously found it... Also... you are a camera shop... shouldnt you have spare batteries just in case? to... you know... test just in case the battery is at fault???) 6. Wait another 2 weeks no phone call or email. So i wrote them an email. A polite email stating that i was displeased with the service I had been given and how much money I was losing by renting camera equipment. Gave them some useful customer interaction pointers in hopes that they would streamline their services in the future. No response. 7. Phone. Leave message. No response. Phone again. My camera is ready. 8. Arrive to pick up camera. They dont take Visa.... Only cash or debit. I understand that Visa costs money.... BUT FIXING MY CAMERA, ONE CAMERA COST $500!!!! That would more than cover your Visa expenses for one month. I don't care who you are if you are charging $500 a pop to fix a camera you can afford to offer credit card services to your customers. 9. Go to the bank to transfer money from my line of credit to my savings account and then withdraw it. 10. Pay reluctantly for my camera. I am an extremely hard person to piss off. I left so mad I was almost in tears. I know a lot of photographers in this city and I have made sure to tell them all about this terrible experience. I'm so mad that I am going on yelp 8 months later to tell the story to in an open forum in hopes that others will not have to go through the same BS that I did. Just a response to my email would have probably prevented me from blasting you to anyone that would listen. Lesson learned? For me definitely. For Vancam? This place was recommended to me by a few of my camera-using friends. I have quite an expensive Canon DSLR and for the 5 years that I've had it, there have been zero problems. All of a sudden I have a fairly big problem in that my shutter mechanism had failed and needed to be replaced. Thank Godness for the internets and our ability as consumers and users to be able to research these types of things. According to the wise-ol interwebs, this type of repair should run me around $300 ish. The component is rated at about 50,000 actuations(uses) and trust me, I've done at least THREE TIMES that. So it isn't a repair that I have any problem with. It is well worth the money to get my beloved baby back on her feet, so to speak. So my options are to send it to Ontario where Canon has their service depot, or take it to a local repair shop for the work. So I decide to take it to this local shop. After a discussion with the technician, we agree that the shutter mechanism is the problem. He will check to see if he has the part locally or will have to order it, and let me know. Later that day he calls to say he will order it in, but he has to charge my credit card in advance for the cost of the part. Understandable. I approve of these charges. A few days later someone calls to report on progress. They have replaced the part and fixed the problem but they have not been able to clear the error from the camera's memory. They are going to have to send the camera to the depot in Ontario anyway. I am asked to again provide my credit card to pay for shipping and insurance charges (about $40) in advance. Understandable. I approve of these charges. A few weeks later the camera is returned, I am advised I can come pick it up. I am very excited. I go to the shop and originally the clerk gives me a bill that doesn't include any deductions for the prepayments I authorized for the part ($90) and shipping ($40). When I told him I'd paid these by credit card he replies "We don't accept credit cards." This threw me for a minute because I was sure that I had paid by MC and was trying to think how I could prove this. He quickly conferred with someone in the back and the matter was resolved. Apparently they only take it in special cases but not as a rule. I completed my purchase for the balance of the bill using my debit card. The amount, in total, including the maintenance and cleaning it received, was what I'd expected to pay just for the repair itself. It was good value and I'm very happy to have my camera back. read more

I took my camera to Vancam Services to replace a cracked lens and prism on a Monday. Since the camera is very old the technician told me he might not be able to find a prism. So I said to look for one, but if he can't find one it isn't the end of the world, but the lens definitely needed to be fixed. The technician told me my camera would be fixed by friday. So I call on Friday and the technician rudely tells me he hasn't even touched my camera because I wasn't sure if I wanted it fixed and I never called back. Why on earth would I bring my broken camera to a camera repair store if I didn't want it fixed? And if Vancam services thought I didn't want my camera fixed, why didn't they call the number I left for them to confirm? Very unprofessional and poor service. My Canon G9 lens stopped retracting while on vacation and none of the usual tricks seemed to work. Was told Vancam or Camtex were the 2 places locally that could fix it. Dropped off my camera, paid $28 as a fee to look into fixing the problem and given an accurate estimation of what the costs would be given what seemed to be the problem. Later received a call and email with an invoice that the camera was fixed and ready to pick up. The cost was about $70 less than what The estimate was so I was happy. When at the store to pick up my camera and after paying by interac, the clerk said it looked like a mistake had been made and only the labour had been included, not the parts. (the original $28 was deducted already) he then asked what I had been quoted over the phone and I said I thought it was similar. (I had been getting over the flu and with the person's accent didn't catch everything, but did recall the same total which is really the important part for the customer. ) The clerk then called in the guy who had called me to ask what he had quoted me and this guy then looked at me and said. "I told you ..." in what felt like an accusatory manner. Given the new total cost was within what I was originally prepared to pay, and that I don't get charged per interac transaction, I simply paid and left. I was very disappointed in the lack of an apology whatsoever, especially after they acknowledged they had made a mistake, and then it was compounded by feeling like I was accused of not recalling the exact details of a phone conversation. Given this and the previous reviews, I would search for another company the next time needing camera repairs. read more

Took my Pentax K-r in to them as the eDial was only able to go up and not down, turning my DSLR into a point-and-shoot automatic camera. For the cost of a cleaning of the camera, they revived the eDial functionality and left me with a nicely detailed camera. It feels brand new after their fine servicing. They did what they said they would, for the cost that they said they would, and it was ready when they said it would be. I cannot ask for more than that. read more

I sent my camera to Vancam September 2017. Was not impressed with the way they handled customer service as well as knowledge about my camera. I am using a Sony mirror-less camera so it is newer but of course they said they could fix it. It took them 2 months of juggling me off and on the phone, saying they would call me with updates and never did, said my parts where on back order and aren't coming in and they couldn't even give me a ETA. Got my camera back (December 2017) and it still is very dysfunctional as well as some stuff is more broken then when I sent in. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

Brought my old SLR in because it wasn't working. Haven't used it for many years, but just changed battery. Counter service was friendly and immediate. Pronounced the camera OK, and then proceeded to compliment me on having an oldie but a goodie, Better than current available new for manual usage! Didn't charge for the service. This place will try to get as much many as they can from you. My 4 month old canon lens was not focusing when I was zooming in so I brought my lens in to get repaired. The guy said that it would be $35 to look at the lens to determine the problem, but he told me it might be the camera that is not working properly so he could check both for $45. It was clearly the lens that was not working properly. So, I just paid the $35. He called the next day saying the problem was that the lens had sand in it and it would cost $200 plus tax to clean. I needed the lens for an event so I paid it. Later on I found out how to clean the lens on youtube. It literally takes less than 10 minutes to clean with a microfiber cloth. You simply unscrew the lens and give it a quick wipe and voila it's repaired. Would you pay $200 for this? Van cam is a scam! read more

I had a stuck lens adapter removed. The job could not be quoted because progressively more aggressive methods may be needed. The task was completed next work day and the cost was $45 plus taxes. The transaction was cash only, no receipt. The adapter had to be drilled and considerable brute force was used to dislodge the adapter. The adapter was sacrificed and that was to be expected. The edge of the lens around the mount was scraped to bare metal. The f stop flange was loose and displaced. There were tiny metal flakes on the rear element. At the front element, paint had rubbed off the filter. I was able to relocate and tighten the f stop flange, and clean the rear element. The lens mount was undamaged and the lens was fully functional. The job was done but it seemed untidy and not meticulous. I think more care could have been taken to protect the lens from the tools. The lens should have been cleaned and refitted to normal before returning to customer. When Vancam was a busy dedicated camera repair depot, I had Vancam restore a Asahi SPII and the work was excellent. The depot now is half camera repair, half shaver shop; a sign of the obsolescence of manual cameras. The shop is competent but I would ask more questions and be more demanding next time. read more

They stole my money ! My Nikon flash wasn't working anymore, so i took it there. Paid a $33 fee to look into fixing the problem. They said they would call me to tell me what the problem was and the actual cost to fix the flash.They never called, so i called. $95 to repair they said. I didn't have the money at the time, so I asked them not to fix it. I was just gonna go back to get my flash in its original state. When I go get my flash back, they tell me they fixed it "by mistake", "because usually such cheap repair are always done." I told them I couldn't pay for it and at the time didn't wanna pay for it cause I told them NOT to fix it. They refused to give me my flash back, they said they could buy it from me the price of the repair, or DAMAGE IT AGAIN and give it back to me. The whole thing was unreal! The owner was hanging on to my flash and would not give it back to me unless i paid. So, without really any choice, i had to pay to get my flash back. I was so mad ! Looks like they fixed it so that i was left with no option but to pay. To me this is close to stealing. I think it's NOT professional at all. Awful service. I dropped off my camera, and they charged me a $35 diagnostic, and told me they would call me before they did any repairs or replaced anything to see if i wanted to go ahead with the repair. Instead, they did the repair, and cleaning, called me AFTER, and said i owed them $60 on top of the diagnostic (Which was suppose to go towards the repair). Very, very dishonest. I would have never paid $95 to repair a digital camera that is worth less than $130 to begin with. do not go to this place to repair anything. read more

DO NOT go to this store, they will rip you off. I was ripped off by this company and they lied about what they did to my cameras. Nothing worse than liars an thieves. I do not recommend this place. I brought my two T3i DSLR cameras to be fixed because they weren't turning on. They told me that they just gave it a good cleaning and said it was working fine. Turns out they reprogrammed the software from an online site (I found out later that I could have done this myself) without telling me and over charged for it. Some of the functions of the camera are not the same so I now need to go back and reprogram it myself to get it back to normal. They could have done the honorable thing and told me how to fix it myself and only charged me the initial $33 charge for taking a look at it, but they didn't Bring your cameras somewhere else, anywhere else. read more
