Here's the revised version with that added naturally at the end: I have to say, I'm surprised this plumber has received so many positive reviews. I will give him credit for responding promptly when I first contacted him and for communicating well before the appointment. Unfortunately, the in-person experience was very different. From the beginning of the visit, he was defensive and unpleasant. At one point, I asked a simple question about why he had run water in a sink with no hot water, and he immediately responded by telling me that he was doing his job and knew how to do his job. I was understandably ruffled by that point, but I kept my voice calm and was never accusatory. I simply asked if we could take the tension down a notch. His response was, "You know how I'm taking it down a notch? I'm leaving," and he abruptly ended the appointment. Several caregivers were present and witnessed the interaction, and they also felt that he had been rude from the beginning. I would not feel comfortable having someone with that demeanor in my home again. At a minimum, the energy was hostile and unprofessional. The whole interaction was honestly just very strange. I first found Van on Yelp when I decided to change plumbers. I have called him on at least 4 occasions for 4 different plumbing jobs. Every time he has texted or called me back in a timely manner. He is polite, professional, honest and usually is able to show up pretty quickly. So far I have not had anything urgent happen. He has saved me money when I told him what I wanted to do or purchase. He has also explained why I should or should not do or purchase something. He always gives me the best recommendation. There were two times when he could have just taken my money to do something I thought needed to be done, but he didn't. Instead, he told me on one occasion, that I didn't need what I thought I did and on another occasion, he made an adjustment to something and said I didn't need to purchase a new 'whatever.' Definitely my first call for ALL plumbing needs! We recently had an outside spigot and pipes replaced. Van scheduled an appointment quickly and showed up on time. He identify the issues with our old spigot and clearly explained the options, risks, and costs associated with replacing spigot and updating outside water lines, which were very outdated. He was able to customize pipes to fit the required space inside and anchored the new spigot to the outside brick wall. Van also had to deal with issues shutting off the water in our house. Our main water shutoff was not working properly, but Van knew alternative ways to shut the water off externally and worked through some of these troubles without hesitation. I found Van on my local Next Door site and have used him twice now. His service is top notch! Wednesday before thanksgiving I called him for a plumbing problem and he even came out early thanksgiving morning to fix it. He is fair in his prices and honest. Van is our hero!! We had a major back up that was coming out of the sink and dishwasher. We had two othercomoanies come out to quote snaking the pipes (Len the Plumber and Roto Rooter). Both were way overpriced and the plumber from Len straight lied to us to upsell services. Luckily we saw Van's truck at another house in our neighborhood and gave him a call. Terrible, terrible, terrible. If I could leave zero stars I would. I have to call my insurance company after Van basically left a minor job and left us a major one. Came to my house to assess a couple of small issues. Poor communication from the start, which should have been a red flag. Started his visit by telling my wife to wrap a towel around a leak by our water main. Was in a rush to leave the job and 3 floors of house are now flooded, and we are calling our insurance company. Van took no responsibility, and further insulted by saying well at least he didn't charge for the visit. Stay away! read more

Van is a great plumber! I started to do a plumbing job myself, and messed it up. It could have turned into a very expensive job, but Van fixed it in less than an hour, for a reasonable price! I was trying to replace a bathtub drain that was corroded. I was able to loosen it a little with great difficulty, but then it got stuck and wouldn't tighten or loosen. My house is 45 years old, so of course the pipe fittings are not going to come apart easily. Then I tested drain with water and now it leaked a lot, because I had loosened the drain. Van warned me that this could be a major problem. It might require cutting a hole in the dining room ceiling to get to the bottom of the tub. The old pipes might break under too much force. But Van worked on it patiently and in less than an hour he managed to get the old tub drain off and replace it without breaking anything! We were very relieved, and happy to pay his reasonable price. I would definitely call Van again for any plumbing problem, large or small. He can solve tough problems! read more

One of the best experiences I had, using a home contractor professional! My Delta Electric Kitchen Faucet had a connectivity issue interrupting the water flow. I contacted Van The Plumber, and Van communicated with me over the phone, to get an idea of the issue, before arriving, in case he needed parts. Van arrived immediately, on the same day of my call, and quickly assessed the issue as not requiring any extensive labor. With a minor adjustment, Van resolved the problem without requiring tools to take apart my system. He resolved the issue by adjusting electrical circuitry connections within a few minutes, so I wanted to give him an outstanding review of professional performance with an A+ rating and recommendation to Olney neighbors as well as DMV Metro customers. read more

I followed our neighborhood recommendation and hired Van to remove the clog in the sink. He did the job, but he charged $325 for this. It took roughly 30 min and it is a common clog. Google estimation for this job is $110 to $216, depending on the complexity. Our case did not have any complications. I am not sure on what planet this is considered as reasonable. Several months ago I realized the shower in my master bath was dripping from the hot-water knob. The handle was moldy, so I threw it out, started using the 3rd-floor shower, and called a guy I know who's a qualified contractor. Long story short, he's as flaky as they come and has never completed the job. I tried to do it myself, but it required a real plumber. The manager at a local plumbing supply store recommended Van, and I'm glad he did. Van was honest, kind, respectful, etc. He gave me a fair price. He showed up early, completed the job, cleaned up after himself, gave clear instructions on what I need to do to follow up, and is an all-around professional.
