Went to the store first time to buy fudge for my lovely wife for Valentines Day. Boy was I surprised to say the least. The price for the fudge was like .999 silver eagles, $42/pound. Average price for fudge in N.H. throughout the state is $19/lb. This is a very high margin like double the average. This kind of thing like the housing market is why inflation is so high. People bear the price stated. One and done for me. Secondly, and it's not even great! It's creamy and that's good buy it weak in chocolate flavor compared to real fudge. I get it it's swiss and that why it's creamy and weak in chocolate flavor. Also the small pcs already cut up is not desirable for me. This is a type of fudge but not real fudge and what I mean by that, is if you had 20 cook books and looked up chocolate fudge assuredly you would not find this type of fudge under chocolate fudge. You'd likely have to look under swiss chocolate fudge if it is even listed as a recipe. Bottom line no fudge is worth $42/pound. I felt like I was trading on the futures exchange. read more

We were actually going to go to dancing lion for some of their delicious drinking chocolate but they were closed. We happened to drive by so thought we would pop in and take a look. This is a really cool little shop. They have much more than just chocolate and they were even playing a kids movie in the back room for the little ones. We found the guy that was working there very knowledgeable in the chocolates that they sold. He answered every question without looking anything up and really seemed to enjoy his job. Everything looked amazing, but I found myself particularly interested in the Swiss fudge. They had some really adorable chocolate mice which had the Swiss fudge inside. I had to try these! Got one for my daughter and daughter in law as well. Yes, the chocolate is a bit pricey, but the quality is the reason. The little mice, if they still have them, I highly recommend you try. Horrible experience. I walked in thinking I would be able to taste test a sample to make sure how their chocolate truly tastes. And I find two young girls whispering as they turn to tell me and said that they are not allowed to let me sample from the casing but gave me an old piece from somewhere. The piece I bit into was not fresh and crusty rims plus not chewy. I came in to hunt for a specific finds. You just lost a potential customer. It was a rude gesture and a cheap excuse that they cannot let me sample ONE piece in its selling state. Do better. read more

Attached to the store is the Cafe Van Otis, which is an "order at the counter" place, takeout or dine-in (small area with table seating). This cute cafe serves great grilled panini sandwiches, salads, baked goods, Starbucks Coffee drinks, tea, bottled drinks, and homemade gelato & gelato shakes. My favorite sandwich is the Smoked Turkey Panini ($5.75-turkey, fresh mozzarella, pesto spread, sliced tomatoes & sundried tomatoes on ciabatta bread), which is full of flavors and served with Wise potato chips and watermelon slices. The homemade gelato comes in two sizes: Small ($2.90-choice of 2 flavors) and Large ($3.50-choice of 3 flavors). My favorite gelato flavors are the tiramisu, peanut butter, cappuccino, and chili chocolate, rich, creamy, and very refreshing on a hot day. Van Otis is without a doubt the chocolate leader in New Hampshire. Definately on the pricey side but you are paying for superior quality. We always go to Van Otis around the holidays to get Swiss Fudge and chocolate tin men and bon bons. I am not a huge fan of there regular chocolate fudge but I am not really a fudge guy anyway. They used to have two locations in Manchester but now only one. They also have an online section you can order. I would not reccomend getting the plastic wrapped candy/fudge as this is usually old(er) great for gifts around the holidays. read more

Out of all the NH chocolatiers, Van Otis is definitely the best. And they are my favorite chocolate brand, period. Their jellies and swiss fudge are out of this world, and everything else is fantastic too. Their store layout is really nice also. Must stop every time we fly in the Manchester. They Swiss fudge is amazing and love their Van Oreos. We always try something new every time we go. This year it was the chocolate covered Devil Dog. My oldest tried one of their candy bars and enjoyed it a lot. My youngest got the solid chocolate letter with sprinkles. They love both! Also got a dog treat for the girls daycare dog when we arrive home. I'm sure he will love it! The girls love how it looks like a real s'mores but is meant for dogs. read more

The Swiss fudge is no joke. After having hit Saugerties, NY to hit Krauses for some hand-made premium chocolate, decided to try the vaunted Swiss fudge of New Hampshire. Though pricey at $25/pound, the dark fudge is otherworldly. On first glance, the one-inch fudge cube appears light and airy, so much so that I'd expected a chalky texture. Definitely not, as the fluffy fudge melts with gentle tooth pressure and coats the mouth. In fact, the gift box indicates that two of these cubes can be dropped into a cup of hot milk for an expensive hot chocolate! Sleeper hits are the various chocolately varieties of saltwater taffy, which were discounted. Peanut brittle was just okay. read more

Need to review this DEVINE chocolate. I was given a box of their gourmet fudge for Christmas and my husband kept refering to them as truffles because the box wasn't label but they were smooth, creamy & perfect! I did my own research and found their company is in NH. (We live in NY). I dropped the ball this Valentine's Day and haven't had time to shop between being pregnant with our second and juggling our 16 month toddler. I remembered that my husband LOVED these chocolates and placed an order today, 3 days before Valentine's Day. I called their shop and without even explaining anything, I asked how long shipping normally takes. The incredibly sweet woman on the phone offered to prioritize getting my order out because the postal service already picked up their orders for the day. Simply fantastic. When you walk in, you're fully greeted by staff who take great pleasure in introducing you to van Otis. The chocolate is simply amazing, one bite makes you want to go back for more! I went here yesterday to get chocolates for Mother's Day As I worked Mother's Day ans couldn't see my mom. The chocolate is amazing and the two ladies working were so helpful and had great customer service. When I told them it was for Mother's day they even told me they still had some Mother's Day items left that were on sale that were dark chocolate as that's is my moms fav and there was a big heart that said Mom. The ladies helped me pick out a box of dark chocolates from the case as well and asked me if I had ever been there before I explained once years ago with my niece and had just got her a couple treats and they offered to give me a sample of their Swiss fudge since I had never had it ITS AMAZING by the way and ended up putting about 6-7 pieces in my box. This is so much better then buying a box of chocolates at Walmart and getting whatever the quality is MORE worth it and the price was very good as well I expected it to be much more then what it was for such good chocolate. This was my third visit to Van Otis Chocolates in 2 years, and I know I will be back more frequently now. I was pleased that they have expanded their shop area, as it had been very close and crowded last summer, and I feared knocking product off the shelves with my shoulder bag. Their selection is vast (in my opinion, too much so) and their prices are high. The quality of their confections is high, without being "chi-chi" like Godiva. They are more like Lake Champlain Chocolates (back in the 90's) than Lindt or Godiva, just as a reference. I prefer to buy their own hand-made confections rather than the packaged offerings (like maple candies, for example), as I have found them elsewhere for a lower price. Their own Salt Water Taffy is just so wonderful... like family vacations on the Jersey Shore in the 70's (way before the reality show, ha!). Their fudge is OK (honestly, Ive made better, with non-GMO ingredients for about 10% of their price), and I stay away from their very pricey chocolate-coated pretzels/ Peeps/ Oreos and things like that, as the prices are seriously out of control for what you are getting! Where they shine, though, and this is the bulk of my rating- just pure chocolates and caramels. Oh....my. Very silky and satisfying chocolates are made by the wizards at Van Otis. Their caramels are wonderful, too- especially the salted caramels. Again, I've made my own using a block of Peter's Caramel and Fleur de Sel but it is only nominally less than buying Van Otis' salted caramels! They just do such a fantastic job with chocolates and caramels and salt water taffy. Every person who works there is polite, helpful and happy. Even when very busy, they do not act rushed or impatient. This last visit, I signed up for their e-mail list because COUPONS! Haha. I will definitely be going back, as my oldest child spends a lot of time and guitar money in the neighboring music store, probably annoying the workers with "Stairway to Heaven". :/ read more

LOVE this place on Elm. They now have chocolate covered potato chips, twinkies and devil dogs. It's a chocolate person's wonderland! First the directions to this store on their web site is wrong if you are coming from the southern part of NH. Second I never got a reply back when I emailed them with questions about a product. I saw an ad in local paper and on their web site for high heel shoe made out of chocolate and thought it was very cute for my daughter in laws birthday (big shoe girl) I called and ordered one. What I got was not as it appeared in their ad or on their web site . The shoe was basic no curvered rim around shoe and no chocolate buckle on the front. I was very disappointed and asked why it wasnt like the pictures they advertised and got no answer except that was how it is.. I asked if anything could be done and the only thing offered was a shoe they had on display left over from Valentines the week before which at least looked better then the one they were giving me so I took that one ( birthday was the next day). I am very disappointed in this place. I at least hope the chocolate tasted good havent had a reply from my daughter in law . I hope they change their customer service and answer emails and produce a product that looks like their pictures they advertise. For $25.00 I expect better. read more
