Here's the thing. This isn't Macys. It's a resale shop. The store isn't super clean. The items may not be organized the best. But, we have found awesome things here for ourselves and our grand littles. We take the time to clean them well- toys , clothes, etc. anything we purchase. And we come home happy to rehome items and to save money. It's a win win. We enjoy this store more than Salvation Army and goodwill which we also frequent. On weekends, everything in the store is 1/2 off. You can't do any better than that. Go in knowing you have to give a little to get a little. We have shopped here for years. I've never been to this location before so I can't say whether this is abnormal or not, but on our visit the store seemed very dirty and all of the merchandise was disorganized and in pretty much disarray. The floors looked dirty and the wares were haphazardly piled on top of each other on the shelves. The prices also seemed high, but I'm not sure if they have some sort of discount based on tag color or something. There was a lady making a bunch of noise tossing sporting goods merchandise around as I thought she shopped, but later on I ran across her in another area of the store throwing plastic toys around and realized that she was an employee. I have been shopping here periodically for the last 10 years. I don't know how it's possible that the store is now worse than it's ever been. I surmise that the corporate leadership wants to save money so rather than pay for a dumpster to rid themselves of garbage, they just slap a price on it and throw it (literally) on the floor or stacked ceiling high on the shelves. In my opinion this is a potential fire hazard and/or a home for cockroaches. I can't believe there isn't a regional manager that spot checks but maybe they do and don't care either. It's a little easier to donate here than other thrift stores, though they are all so difficult to donate furniture to. They are friendly, their prices are fair, the place is somewhere between not okay and okay in terms of being organized and clean. Once Again I love Value Village because of their pricing and half off days. Things are categorized by color and style. You have to go through the racks for sizing. This place is pretty big so take your time. Make sure you go to their site and check what's half off before you go. I guess I just have great luck with this place, because I have never left it without finding one sort of fabulous deal or another! Oh sure, you hafta dig through tons of stuff, but for the most part it is well organized and well lit. And come on, people, digging for that one amazing find is half of the fun! Remember, you are thrifting. If you want an easy, quick fix, just go to Nordstrom Rack. (which I also love, but that is a review for another day) At this location I have found a camel colored 3/4 wool Banana Republic coat, a mini pair of lederhosen in mint condition for my 3 year old nephew, and lots of vintage Pyrex bake-ware. Here's the thing - I'm not a thrifter at all. In general, the stores gross me out and I feel like I might get scabies or something just going in. For a thrift store, this particular VV is probably on the better end of the scale. It's huge, everything is organized by type of item, size and color. It's definitely the best "location" of the Value Village empire. I understand they have frequent 50% off sales which mean you'll really get a deal. I was looking for an ugly Christmas sweater and this location really delivered. They had hundreds of horrifying holiday tops to pick from. My choice was frighteningly festive and a steal at $4. I didn't get scabies (that I know of) and I got what I came for, so this Value Village is a-ok. read more

I'm not sure how I've never thought to write a review for one of my favorite thrift stores in the area. Some of my best teenage summers were spent with weekly visits to this Value Village. I've gone here on dates, brought new friends to shop, like jeez I literally have made memories at this place. This isn't Goodwill. It's a little grimey and messy. I even heard one person claim to find a McDonald's cheeseburger in a winter coat pocket. (This has not been a verified story.) But it is CHEAP. Especially if you plan around their daily 50% discounts or their weekend 50% off everything. And that's what you come for, the deals and the hidden treasure!! I've also never once, in the years I've been shopping here, had a bad experience with an employee. They're all very friendly. And I usually bring more than the 3 item limit into the dressing room, never have been scolded (: Worth the stop for avid thrifters. Out of all the local Value Villages, this one if my favorite (rip North Ave location). The other Layton location is just eh. Haven't had the luck I've had at this location. This location is the best of all Value Village places in the Milwaukee + surrounding area. Why? It's cleaner, frequented by less people, plus you're more likely to find a greater selection of semi-legit vintage pieces. That is to say I've had more success finding what I want here than at St. Paul's/Salvation Army. And, if you're that fancy, there's nice "designer" section set up at the entrance. Clothing is split between gender and their appropriate article of clothing, then organized by color. Accessories and shoes are towards by the back. Electronics and furniture have their own corner towards the back-right of the store. Way-right houses music, books, housewares, and little pathway where you can find all different types of new + vintage fabrics. You'll find things neatly organized, but the shoe section does tend to get a little messy. What most impresses about this location is how much it houses and how kind the employees are. Most of the time, I just like walk in, browse, and eventually come out with more than I imagined. Very frequently I purchase things at half-price. Like a previous review mentioned, sales are according by date of the week: MTuTh - 50% off clothing, shoes, and accessories. WF - 50% housewares, electronics, books, music, fabric, and furniture. Drove a whole 35 minutes because the online time was wrong. :( came back later to pick up the furniture I bought, pickup time clearly said 6 PM on the back. It's so difficult to find plus sized wedding dresses. Ok, I was shopping for an Elite Matriphony event. The staff was friendly for the most part. I found something that might have worked and asked to see the fitting room. I brought my daughter with me and the moment we stepped in the fitting room, I ordered her not to sit down. The room was filthy. Not just dirty, Filthy! I didn't even want to try on the clothes in fear of getting scabies. The price was 1/2 which was awesome. I immediately took my clothes home and stuck them in the wash just to be safe. Fake weddings and scabies don't mix. The floor throughout the facility was also filthy. Yuck! read more

Good Idea: Clothes sorted by color. Bad Idea: Not really having much of anything you want. Not a great selection most times (for Mens Wear, to clarify). Prices are wacky, and it's almost always 50% off, except for the times it isn't (check the website for which days are what) . Prefer the other Value Village stores to this one, and prefer Goodwill to them all. If you're looking for something specific though, check it out. Value Village, oh Village of Valuables? Wait. No, I wouldn't think the general population would call them valuables... Doo-dads? Knick knacks? Tchotckes? You got it. This Value Village definitely has an unreal amount of doo-dads. So many doo-dads. There's an aisle filled with things in baggies stapled shut. Just random stuff crammed in baggies, stapled shut. I bought a gallon sized zip lock bag filled with dinosaurs here for like, two dollars. What a deal. The stuffs? Great! Most times. It seems like the south side's unwanted stuffs are way more awesome than the north side's. But it's all perspective. There's an insane amount of shoes, records, t-shirts, kitchen utensils, sewing supplies from the 50's, old party invitations, children's books, and hard shell luggage. Also, the collector cases usually have nintendo games and giant cell phones in them. Always good for a reminder of how fast technology is moving. The staff? Great! They're super friendly. I've always had a pleasant experience, the cashiers are all really sweet. The bathroom? Eh, it always has hand soap? Do stop by here before Halloween. Seriously, they always have brand new costumes that are missing unnecessary accessories. Which is pretty cool. I've bought like, three bumble bee costumes here. Oh! They take credit cards now. If you're a thrift store junkie, you know that heading to secondhand stores in some of the more affluent neighborhoods can lend you some pretty great finds. Is Value Village in a posh neighborhood? Well, no. You will not find a North Shore Nancy's "like-new" leftovers. But you will find some pretty cool authentic retro stuff! I enjoy looking at the old dinnerware and knickknacks. You can find some neat treasures to decorate your house. I go there in October to create awesome costumes. Be sure to wash everything when you get it home. I visit this Value Village at least once a week, and typically visit about 3 times a week. I must have good luck, apparently, because I have found tons of awesome pieces here. My most fashionable finds include skirts, jackets, and flannels. My favorite VV find is a J Crew skirt I got for $2. It would have been a dollar on a half priced day! I get compliments every time I wear it. They have a great selection of ACTUALLY VINTAGE clothes, normally in great condition, for very low prices. They have lots of dishes and crafting supplies as well. You'll never have to pay full price, which is one of the Double V's most wonderful qualities. Weekends are half price off the entire store, and during the week, either clothes or housewares will be half off. Yes, it's dirty. It's a thrift store. Yes, it smells. It's a thrift store. Disgusted with the way I was treated by the 'manager' Maureen, I think her name is. She is rude and holds her self on some kind of pedestal. She refused to unlock the handy cap dressing room so I could sit my child down on a bigger bench other than the smaller bench in a regular dressing room. She said she didn't want me to set my child down on the bigger bench of risk of falling off but INSISTED I use the smaller one because, her exact words were, "what does it matter"!...? Makes absolutely no sense to me! It makes my blood boil just thinking about it. I was a loyal customer for 15 years. I spent a lot of money there and donated all of my old stuff. I will never go back there again and if I see that lady in public without my children, she will hear exactly what I think of her! read more

Wisconsin is a state of lower cost of living than Alaska, but the prices appeared to be the same for used clothing. The staff seemed adequate, the customer's children unruly, and poorly cleaned establishment will make this a one hit wonder for me. read more

I recently started to buy bagged up mismatched and broken jewelry,I got about 6 or 7 bags in a 4 month period, Then on Feb 23 I went in and found some more, but the difference was that the bags were about one tenth their original size with higher prices. When I questioned the clerk, she said that it was orders from the new manager to make the jewelry bags much smaller with higher prices. This is not thrift its pure unadulterated greed. I love thrifting! This is one of my favorite places to thrift at! I've had many great experiences here and for most part employees are friendly and nice. I recently had a bad experience this week before the store was closing. The store hours says it closes at 6pm. I got there at 5:30 looking specifically for one thing, I was headed to dressing rooms with three items to try on at 5:45pm. Just as I was headed to the dressing room door I hear on intercom the the fitting rooms are now closed because it is 5:45pm. I didn't see a sign or anything indicating that the fitting rooms close fifteen minutes prior to the store closing so basically I drove there and shopped for nothing because this rude employee scolds me for opening the door stating that they are closed. In my eyes (I have worked in retail before) if I literally have a few items to try on it really shouldn't be that big of a deal. I could see if it's 5:55pm and I have a cart full of items to try on. I simply put my stuff back on the racks and said I'm not going to buy anything then. It was the way he scolded me like I was a ten year old (I'm 24) instead of politely explaining to me that they can't have anyone in the fitting rooms anymore. If your going to be rude to customers you are going to get attitude back and worse lose those loyal customers, and I've been shopping at value village since high school. Definitely am seeing new employees and newer faces working there, they should pick better people to work there that are all about customer service not about getting out right away exactly at 6pm sharp. I've worked in retail and sometimes I would have to work an extra hour because a customer wanted to take another 30 minutes to shop around. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? Hire more people that have respect for others is all I am going to say. Found some great stuff at the store in the past, noticing some of the prices are going up on certain things too, I will try to check out more customer friendly stores elsewhere when I have time. read more

I moved here about 16 years ago from Racine. They had a great "Value Village" in Racine and I was certain it would be the part I would miss most. It wasn't simply because I immediately found Value Village on Layton Avenue. I have only purchased a new dress ONCE from another store since I moved. Everything I wear is from Value Village. That includes underwear, shoes, coats, etc. You name it, I purchased it there, including some of my furniture! Many of the staff know and greet me by name. Laurie and Sheila are two of my favorites! I wouldn't be able to stay within my budget if it weren't for Value Village. Of course, I always wash the clothing when I get home and I won't wear any shoes without disinfecting them first. Yes, the dressing rooms and other areas can be messy. I blame that on some unruly customers who don't have enough respect to properly hang up any clothing that they try on and don't purchase. Some let their kids run, scream and play games in the store, etc. I have never had a bad experience here. I've been told that much of their income is passed on to Veterans.
