Fantastic. Just fantastic. I try to do as much work on my car as I can myself because I hate going to places to get my car repaired or serviced. Sadly, on a road trip, my muffler started vibrating and being loud as hell, I knew something must be loose/broken. Today I went to Value Plus Mufflers based on my obsessive search for a great place to get it fixed at, and I really wish more places were like this. Walking in I didn't really know what was going on because there isn't an immediate office to walk in, and everyone was busy working on a car at that moment, but they came to me after a few minutes so don't worry, they'll get to you if it looks a bit busy. The manager and the guy who worked on my car were both fantastically nice, and showed me what was going on at each step of the process(muffler and catalytic converter were detached, and muffler was hanging a bit). I was going to go to the bar a few buildings down to get a beer, but they offered me one instead, what great guys! Overall it took about thirty minutes total, they welded on a new piece of pipe in between the two previous pieces, fixed the hang on my muffler, and showed me the work that looked well done, overall fantastic experience. Now comes the price, I was expecting to pay closer to a hundred, but it only cost me $50 bucks! Wow, without a doubt I would have payed double if not triple or quadruple that at any regular place. I decided to check this shop out based on reviews but maybe I didn't "somehow" qualify for the ascribed discounts others have "claimed". It's time for an emission test for my daughter's 2001 Nissan Xterra and she's getting a P0430 code which "may" indicate the bank 2 catalytic converter. After inquiring about having the bank 2 converter(s) replaced I was quoted $600 and upsold that I should spend $1200 to replace both sides..."cause the other one is likely on the way out too". Maybe it is, but for a 15 year old vehicle, probably one major repair away from the junkyard, my only goal is to get it past "this" emissions test and keep it on the road as inexpensively as possible. Not spend an additional $600 for a potential repair down the road. I mentioned installing a much cheaper universal converter but he pushed the more expensive (and profitable) direct fit ones. I have some experience in having a universal catalytic converter installed on my 2002 Subaru at another muffler shop (a bit of a drive for me) at a considerable discount as compared to the a direct fit converter. I know it can be done if the shop is "really" trying to save you money...which this particular individual (muffler shop) was not. read more

Top Notch. I love this operation. They excel at the 30 minute repair. They finished my job in less time and for $10 less than the original quoted price. This experience began as if it were a scene out of the film Crash. As I stepped out of my car an African guy in upscale attire approached from within the garage and asked if my Catalytic Converter had been stolen too. Yes it was! Wait, how did you know? Yours too, huh? He explained that the mechanic, Lalo, told him there was a rash of these thefts on Honda and Jeep SUV's. However, he continued, he didn't believe Lalo, he thought Lalo had made up this story. Until I arrived. I thought perhaps he's telling me this to alleviate his guilt over his misjudgment. But no. As he is relating these thoughts he employed these subtle facial and hand gestures that not only hint at a bias against the mechanic but most incredulously, seemed to solicit my concurrence that, yes - of course, I can see how you thought Lalo must be making this up. To all of this I deferentially replied "Well?" I found this exchange to be more odd then the scene I took part in when in 1992 I was buying used tires at a shop on Irving Park Road underneath the Brown Line stop. As my Escort sat jacked up in the street and the mechanic was replacing my really old tires for just plain old tires, a street merchant approached and offered the mechanic and I a great bargain on discount designer cologne. The mechanic skidded back on the bucket he was using as a makeshift stool and stood up. You could barely see his tattoos beneath the sheet of grease that covered his overalls, arms, hands and fingers. "Do I look like I wear Cologne?" he asked flatly. With this rhetorical question, a photographer happened by and witnessing this pure Chicago moment, took pictures. Perhaps for his scrapbook, I don't know. I never got my copies. Nor did I buy any cologne. The stuff was crap. Value Plus Mufflers is quite small, with lifts for two cars and a small waiting room. They had my part in-stock, took the time to show me what they were going to do and did it. I especially appreciate their personalized service and was happy to learn that we both shared a like minded disdain for the "lazy" thieves. I didn't see any signage deferring to "insurance regulations" as the reason you couldn't enter the work floor so I presume this to be the type of place where if you were foolish enough to want to stand next to the welder while he did his thing, it would be of little consequence to them. There is an interesting assortment of improvised tools in the shop, all of which are well suited for the task at hand, but originally sold for a purpose quite distinct from the roles for which they are currently being used. Take the "garden hose tool", for instance. With one end to his ear and the other wedged up in my engine, my mechanic was able to "hear" the crack in my exhaust manifold. He then "visually inspected" the end of the hose he removed from his ear. Did he see smoke? Did it come from the engine? Did it come from his ear? I couldn't tell. He invited me to see for myself. As I approached, his helper gave me a sly smile. I had never used a garden hose like this before. Was this a joke? If so, on whom? And if not, could it be? I felt odd holding the hose and didn't quite know whether to look or listen or what. I did both. Twice. In opposite order. I then almost put the hose to my mouth, flashing back to the time in 1987 when I had used a garden hose as the conduit for gas I was siphoning from the car parked next to me in Woodfield Mall. But yes, he was right. The exhaust manifold revealed a crack. He explained this was a repair they didn't offer as it was outside their core competency. My words, not his. While Core Competency may not be in their vocabulary, it most certainly is in all their actions, in all they offer and in everything I received while at Value Plus Mufflers. The dealer wanted $555 for the part itself and Value Plus Muffler lived up to their name and completed the whole job for under $175. Out the door. I was given a 1 year warranty and the bill did not include the bogus line items charged by dealers like Shop Supplies, Part Disposal, Special Charges and of course, Tax. * No crimes were actually committed. By "Woodfield Mall" I mean my Dad's garage. I define "car parked next to me" as my Dad's lawnmower being put away for the winter read more

Searching for exhaust repair in my locale and Value Plus Mufflers pops up close enough to drive my vehicle, which sounded like a dirt bike, to the this spot. They showed me exactly what was wrong, gave me a price and on to welding they were just 15 minutes after I was there. New flex pipe welded on for $80 when the part costs around that much. One year or 10,000 mile warranty on repairs. How could you go wrong? read more

Originally came here over the summer after my catalytic converter was stolen. CarX quoted me over $500 to replace it. Value plus Mufflers did it for about half of that. That day they also drilled my front license plate back on free of charge after it came off from a completely different incident. Brought my car in to get my brakes looked at last week they diagnosed the problem called me to let me know what they would do and how much it would cost in a timely manner. These guys couldn't have been better! I had a noisy muffler been quoted over $800 by Northside Toyota to replace the entire center pipe (including catalytic converter). I went to Value Plus (solely based on Yelp reviews). They put the car on the lift, showed me where the pipe rusted away from the clamp towards the rear of the car and said they could just replace that part of the pipe....on the spot (5:00 on a Friday no less)...for 45 DOLLARS !!! I hung out while they did the work, they showed me the work they did and I drove off with my little Scion that no longer sounded like a muscle car. This place is for real. This place is awesome!!!! First of all these guys are very friendly. I called Saturday afternoon, they let me bring it that day. He looked it over and it only took about 25 minutes... I had bowl of soup at Jerry's diner. He changed the muffler, some pipe, the resonator and changed all of my hangers for only $100.00. i had a beer at O'Lanagan's On Montrose. only took him 35 minutes to change it. He even stayed late to get it done. I had a quote from a large chain for $640!!! So this guy saved me $540. Oh and most impressive his work comes with a full warranty for a year !!!!!!!! Awesome, just awesome. The muffler on our Civic came apart from the tailpipe while driving around the broken down streets of Detroit. Affixed them together with a coat hanger and made the drive back to Chicago. Called around to the usual suspects...Car-X, Midas, etc. They all wanted between $130 - $275 for a fix or a brand new muffler. Saw the reviews on here for Value Plus, decided to go check it out. The owner was there and told us he could fix it with a simple welding job. $40. I realize that this is more or less a temporary fix, but he gave us a 1 year warranty on top of the fix. He let us watch him do the work, explained exactly what he was doing and why. Was very friendly. We had to wait for two cars in front of us but once he got our car lifted, the work took literally 20 minutes max. A+++ would recommend all day every day. read more

I went to a couple of mechanics close to my place to install an oxygen sensor. They wanted nothing to do with it, since it was stuck. The guy at Value Plus had the old one off in about 5 minutes and the new one on in the same. I asked him to take a look at my exhaust system and he gave me a clean bill of health. The rumors are TRUE - this place is legit. I was quoted at the Lexus dealer an insane amount of money! Depressed, I started surfing Yelp and found this muffler shop that has all 5 star reviews, this is really rare especially in the automotive arena and more so in our overly critical social society. I pulled in and was greeted by the owner who took my info and said the would call with a quote. The quote was hundreds less than Lexus was charging and he gave a 1 year warranty on the work that was performed. Had my catalytic converter stolen last year and the length of pipe that holds the oxygen sensor was missin. I took my 2005 Altima in today because the muffler has been getting louder recently. These guys immediately had it raised up and showed me where the leaks in my muffler were coming from. They removed and replaced the piece I needed in 20 minutes! They also pointed out other parts to replace in the future without pressuring me to do it now. Icing on the cake- I had just come from getting new license plates at the DMV and they put them on for me. It wasn't necessary but the customer service was much appreciated. Took my 2007 Saab 9-5 in to replace the resonator. Keeping a 10 year old import from company that is no longer is business running can be an expensive proposition. Luckily that proved not to be the case with Value Plus. A job well done at a reasonable price in less than 30 minutes was just what the doctor ordered. I was told when the original muffler finally gives out that they don't have the replacement but I can bring one I find on my own (not too hard to get online at this point but a little extra work) and they will install it. Yes as good as it gets when working with mechanics! Ladies do not be afraid ---no up-selling or foolery here. When my regular mechanic tells me I need to replace my muffler and it will be $500+, it was tough to hear. I have an honest cheaper than the dealer mechanic who warranty's everything. However this time my father pitched a place he had been to with my mother years ago. Thank goodness I listened to my father's advice and checked out Value Plus Mufflers. Yes it's small, yes there are no frills but they are honest, quick, and economical- traits that beat free bad coffee and TV. My $500+ ordeal was only $45 to fix. The mechanic put my car up on the lift, showed me the issue and 20 minutes later: cut the pipe, replaced, sealed the flange that broke off and I was ready to go. He showed me the work he did and my baby runs like it should. I asked the owner if it was only a muffler shop, and he said. He has since expanded to emissions, brakes etc. He told me to bring my car in and if they could fix it ---they would. And I think I might just do that if needed. Went here today to get a catback exhaust done, I had a new magnaflow resonator I purchased at pepboys that i needed to get welded. Got a new 2.25 catback exhaust and my new resonator installed for only $80 bucks!! What a great deal, Vasquez and sons charged me $90 bucks to only weld in a new muffler, what a rip!!! Alberto from Value plus mufflers is really nice and helpful, was in and out in less then a hour. This is my new muffler shop, very happy with the service N price!!! A must go place!!
