I actually like Dr. Young and Dr. Hale quite a bit. But the office staff and lack of organization have driven me away from this practice. On my last visit, which was about 6 months ago, I was in the office for almost 2 hours to get a retinal x-ray done by a technician. First I waited for the test for about half an hour, then when it was done I was left waiting to see the doctor to interpret results. After being there for an hour and 40 minutes and still being told it would be a wait, I left and asked to be phoned with results. They were clearly overbooked with many people waiting. Now I've been trying to get an eye drop Rx refilled for a week. Two faxes from the pharmacy and phone calls from both of us and they still don't have it done. Add this to a past experience of not being able to get a straight answer about estimated cost for eye exam with my insurance and I'm done. read more

I had to get two of my old pairs of eyeglasses repaired. One pair was fourteen years old, the other seven, almost eight years old. I wear them every waking hour; so, they are well worn. Had to edit review. My glasses and my husband's both are all scratched up. Mine got scratched after a month and I take excellent care of them. When I got new lens put in they get hazey multiple times a day. Husband did he's not going back to get lenses despite warranty. My glasses are worse, the support broke three times. I called for a sec pair and they would not give a discount and wanted 800.00 I said forget that I'm going to Costco. She said no don't go there we have better quality glasses, I said really mine are falling apart and already scratched in aonth. We spent 3,000 for three eye glasses and eye exam there. I could of gotten better quality at Costco and not spent my whole savings on them I feel they honestly over charged us and will not be going back. Super glued my glasses three times! read more

The two stars are solely because of Dr. Hale! He's terrific. However, this clinic is a mess. They nickel and dime you to death, they are expensive, and are very aggressive when charging you, or trying to sell you something. Like, used car lot style. Also, they are NEVER on time. They are usually behind schedule anywhere from 30 min. to an hour and a half. Of the six visits to the clinic (1 visited the clinic once and was done, my wife decided to give them a chance and went back 5 other times) only once they were on time. There is good eye care in Corvallis and Albany that is not this expensive, pushy, and disorganized. P.S. - if the Corvallis School District recommends this clinic to you....pass up on it. read more

I'd be really careful with this place. My oldest has had eye issues his whole life so he's been to Portland for specialists for his amblyopia. I've always tried to do the best research and see the best doctors for him to strengthen his eye and I'm so grateful I didn't take him here. I did take his younger brother and the doctor said he needed glasses after maybe five minutes of an exam.... We have great insurance so I don't know if they just looked at the dollar signs but being weary having a kid with more extensive issues I wanted to get a second opinion. When I took my youngest son, ( who valley eye care said NEEDED glasses), and he's six.... They said he absolutely did not need them and didn't need to be seen again for a couple years his eyes were so great. It's really sad places use kids to make a profit. I will never go here again after this experience and deception. My son is a phenomenal athlete and I just think of what corrective glasses could have done to him going forward. Don't take your kids here and don't go yourself if you want a real evaluation versus filling their pockets. read more

I've been going to this place for a few years now. I made my appoitment 6 weeks ago. The office called me 2 1/2 hours before my appointment this morning to let me know that Dr. Young could not make the appointment (unforseen circumstances) and that I needed to re-schedule. Sure, I get that, we all get sick & things come up. What I don't get is that the soonest appointment she sould offer me was 6 weeks out. Really? I simply go back in the que for another 6 weeks to re-schedule an appointment that was broken by him? This is a poor policy! Dr. Young & staff should at least attempt to open up his schedule for appointments he cancels last minute, maybe stay an hour longer one day to make up for that last minute cancellation. Dr. James Hale is a great optometrist. The first time I went in for my exam, he explained everything to me in plain simple English. He treats his patients with care and takes his time to listen to your worries and concerns. He doesn't waste your time or spends your money by doing unnecessary 'extra' tests. The people there are really nice as well. I have a limited budget for glassware and I wanted the most out of it. One year I wanted glasses AND contacts at the same time, but it was totally out of my budget. One of the desk lady went out of her way to see how much my insurance will cover and see how much I would have to pay if I wanted both. Of course, I have insurance and wanted to pay the least as possible. What the lady did for me was phenomenal, we was able to find me a rebate for the contacts I was getting. With that rebate, I was able to get glasses with it. I ended up paying less than $50 for a pair of nice glasses and 1 year worth of contacts. I believe that's exceptional customer service right there. [-] Although, I have to say- their pricing are quite on the expensive end. I've tried on more than half of their women's frames, and not a single person has greeted me or asked if I would like some assistance. This isn't new. This is business as usual for Valley Eye Care. Condescending... looks like I am not the only customer who feels that some of the staff /opticians are condescending. Bought a pair of good quality glasses and bought the top of the range lens. Glasses did not fit . Some advise during selection would have avoided all this. Had to go in several times throughout the year for adjustments. Finally just over one year the frame broke into two. No I did not sit on them or try to break them as I have mid term exams coming up. When I called for advise.. I get a condescending response. No sympathy or attempt to help. Uhhhhh yeah. Let me just start off by saying the staff here are some of the rudest people I've ever met in my entire life. I really don't know what else to say. Talking down to patients, check. Talking about patients behind doors when they think patients can't hear them, check. Trying to persuade you to by the most expensive options, check. Quoting false times for glasses/contacts coming in, check. Some of the staff were ok and I don't mean to blast them. But I will NEVER ever go here again. Each time I was in there I heard unhappy customers or saw staff members rolling their eyes and just being plain snooty. Not how you want to treat new patients. At the end of the day I was there to order new contacts, was told when they would arrive, and when the contacts were mysteriously "not ordered yet" I was told "well can't you just wear your glasses?" Really? If I was just going to wear my glasses I wouldn't have been there for contacts!! When I eventually went to pick them up the patient in front of me was having the same exact argument with the staff. Save your time and go some place else. read more

Polite, friendly staff. They even helped me save some money (~$150) on an eye exam after it became clear that my former optometrist had gotten it completely wrong. Edit: I have to take away a star. I got a new exam done here and ordered contacts. The trial pair worked perfectly the first time, so I went ahead and ordered a 6 month supply. When the lenses arrived, they were a different brand than I had used for the trial pair. The "contact lens specialist" insisted that the two lenses were the same, when in reality they aren't even made of the same material, and the optometrist and I had specifically chosen one over the other because I hadn't been very successful with one kind in the past. read more

I've been using Valley Eye Care for about 10 years and Dr. Young is great. He's super nice and easy to talk to and he really knows his stuff. I was having problems with my existing contacts a few years ago and we went through a ton of testing and different brands to find a pair that worked for me. Their new imaging system is very cool and gives me a history of changes in my eyes that I could bring anywhere. And I no longer have to get my eyes dilated! #corvsmb read more

I have to be really careful with my eyes - without correction, I'm legally blind, so I don't want to do anything that could jeopardize my eyesight. I have found both Dr. Knutson and Dr. Hale to be really thorough and professional (I've never had an exam with Dr. Young, but my husband goes to him and likes him a lot, too). I agree with the review that commends the way Dr. Hale "explained everything in plain simple English." I've also had the experience of my contacts being very carefully fitted and checked. They gave me several kinds to evaluate and try. The imaging system is fantastic and the best thing is that they can capture scans, keep them in my patient file and compare the structure of my eye over time to make sure nothing is deteriorating. There is a surcharge for this that is not covered by insurance but it is well worth it. I took my child to Dr. Hale at 9 months old, which is the recommended time for a first exam. Dr. Hale does a great job working with kids - plus, he explained everything he was doing to me as he went along - and the exam was a success. read more

I've been coming here since 2006. The business has expanded since then, and so has the quality of care at VEC. Dr. Hale, Dr. Arthurs, and Dr. Nohad have been instrumental to the health and well-being of my eyes. They have always been kind, informative, and steered me in the right direction. The assistants have also been wonderful. During my last visit (which was because my glasses broke irreparably), Ann Marie helped me choose a new pair of glasses that looked great on me (and I hadn't considered at first). She also found a pair of glasses that my current lenses could fit in to, so I'd have a pair of glasses to wear while I waited a few weeks for my new pair to be made. This was so helpful and consider, especially for someone with a complicated and difficult prescription like mine. I always appreciate the level of care and courtesy from everyone at Valley Eye Care, from the office assistants to the doctors. They're why I've never visited another eye specialist in Corvallis. (The extra visits were covered under a contact lens fitting fee, separate from the initial visit. Considering how much time it took to get the proper fit, I feel it was a very reasonable fee.) I was visiting Corvallis from out of town, and I lost a contact lens in the shower. Had no backup/spares, strangely, and I'd forgotten my glasses on this trip (of course!). I went to Valley Eye Care, and they were able to call my regular eye doctor back home and get my prescription in order to supply me (free!) with a pair of sample lenses. Life savers!! I have worn glasses and contacts for about 20 years and have been to the eye doctor for abuot 30 years. Ever since I started wearing contacts I have complained of dry eyes and was always just brushed off. I saw Dr. Young for the first time and my first time at Valley Eye Care and told him the same story I had told a million times. He was the first to actual test my tear level and tell me how low it was - REALLY LOW. He also explained that the reason I had been given so many different perscriptions was because depending on the how dry my eyes were - it was acutally changing the shape of my eye. He gave me lots of different contacts to try - he wanted me comfortable!! When I told him I didn't really want prescription meds for my dry eyes he acutally suggested Fish Oil - I was floored! The service was prompt and professional, really takes the time to make you feel that you are part of a family and really are taking care of a very important part of your health. Was really impressed with the great selection of glasses to choose from. For me the Oakley glasses were a big hit. If you going to spend the money, might as well get something that you like. RUN the other way!! Rude, expensive and way better eye care offered in Corvallis. I had my exams and purchased glasses/frames with them for three years. I later purchased an extra pair from Costco which needed adjusting. They had gladly adjusted them before, but today when I went in, they wouldn't adjust the ones from Costco because they weren't purchased at their store. I was told if I paid $30, they would make minor adjustments to them for two years without charge. Say what?? What about the glasses I purchased there for $600?? Sure! I mentioned it would have been good customer service to email or send their clients a letter concerning the change because I had made a special trip to their office. Told them I wouldn't be back and they could have cared less. I honestly couldn't believe it. The adjustment would have taken five minutes. Vented... feel better. read more

This review is for the OPTICIAN part of the business, not the doctors. The doctors are great, and they have very good equipment. The doctors are professional and helpful. If you need vision correction, though, you really should go somewhere else to get your glasses. The opticians can be friendly enough, but they can also be extremely condescending and absolutely try to up-sell their product. If you know what kind of lenses you want, INSIST on ordering them, and DO NOT be influenced by the staff trying to tell you that the lenses you want are no good. After almost two decades of being their customer, I let down my guard and twice let the opticians push me towards lens options I wasn't too keen on. I figured they tried to sell me on them every damn time I went in, so I thought I'd try them. After the second time, I got back in touch because these lenses really just weren't going to work. I will say in their defense that after much back-and-forth they offered a solution that was going to work for me. However, when I went to pick up my new lenses, they tried to renege on the offer they had made. I insisted that they treat me like they had promised, and eventually they did agree, but not without a difficult conversation. I'm sure other patients could hear the conversation, and I kind of suspect this is the only reason they finally provided what they promised. Had the office been empty, I'm sure they would have made my life more difficult. It's sad to say, but since I'd like to have one full-service optometrist and optician, I will probably be looking for a new eye doctor. This is really sad because I actually really do like all of the various eye doctors I have worked with over the past two decades. I went here back in December to choose a pair of frames. I had my prescription already and I knew they had a wide array of options. I went and once I chose a pair of frames that I liked, I had to fill out a form. This form asked for my social security number which I found to be pretty odd. Why in the world would they need it? I asked and they said that they just needed to last 4 digits. Whatever, I really wanted those glasses, so I gave them the last four digits. I am helped out by a sales person and she says that without insurance the glasses would cost $500+. Yikes! But they said that my insurance should over about $200 of that. They would check with my insurance and get back to me if there are any issues. I didn't hear from them and I went out of town for the holidays. When I returned, I figured I should call and check to see if my glasses were ready. I call and the lady I speak to says that they do not have a glasses order, just frames. I ask why, and apparently my insurance does not cover vision. Ok, well why didn't anyone call me? They claimed that someone had called and left me a message. Finally they have the sales girl I had worked with call me back. I speak to her and she says she called and left me a message, and since I never called back, they sold the frames to someone else. When I tell her that I received no such message, she says "Oh well that's weird because this is the only number we have on file for you." I tell her she must have misdialed. She does not apologize ONCE. What happened to the customer is always right? Ultimately I ended up taking my business elsewhere as I had no interest in doing business with Valley Eye Care after how I was treated. The glasses I ended up getting were $200 less than the ones offered here, even without insurance. The other place also did not ask for my social security number. I will never go back here and recommend that you do not go either. Terrible customer service, unapologetic when an issue came up, and overpriced glasses. read more

I visited today and was examined by Dr. Hale. I found the offices clean and the staff quick, efficient, and thorough. I arrived at the time agreed upon and was seen with no waiting. After a optical scan I was informed I would need a closer look as I had a freckle apparent in my left eye. I was dilated, examined manually, then via a laser scanning system. While I was given a clean bill of health I was referred to another doctor for an ultrasound "just in case". In addition I was not charged for the extra examination as it was insisted upon by the good doctor for his own clarification. I find that a nice touch in an age where providers often are only interested in getting you in and out as fast as possible for the benefit of seeing more patients and fattening the wallet. I have been going to Valley Eye Care for several years, and have been unimpressed by my recent experiences with this office. First of all, I expect decent service when I am being charged almost $200 (and this is going with old-school eye drop dilation) for a visit. All of the tests and other things I had done were the same as every other visit I have had since I was a kid, and as I recall, I was charged quite a bit less for previous visits. Also, many medical offices in town offer a discount for people paying out-of-pocket (vs. having vision insurance), which is not an option here. Office staff were sluggish in returning my calls, and less than professional during my visit. Again, I expect that when I pay that much to see an eye doctor, I am treated with friendliness and respect. The waiting room had relatively loud radio music (think Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines") and some of the staff members looked like they were dressed to go to the gym, rather than working in a professional office. Overall, my experience with each staff member left me feeling like I was being rushed through so they could cram in another patient. At one point, while waiting for my eyes to dilate, I was shuffled into the waiting room and told to take my jacket in case they moved me to a different exam room for the next stage of my visit. The only pros I can think of for going to this office are being able to get in for a visit quickly (which may be because of the poor service) and having weekend hours. I have had decent experiences with eye care visits throughout my life, and this is the first visit that left me feeling the need to deter others from visiting this office. Needless to say, I will be going elsewhere in the future. read more

I am head over heels for this doctor and their staff. They did all of the detailed eye exams with no discomfort whatsoever and even walked me through them so I knew exactly what to expect. I remember thinking that I was doing so much with the assistant that the doctor would have nothing left to test or to tell me, that it would be one of those scenarios where the doctor bops in and says hi and leaves after 5 minutes. But it was NOTHING like that. I think I spent more time with the doctor than the assistant! He talked to me about computer usage and screen time and how to keep my eyes more lubricated and healthier. He answered all of my questions about Lasik and drops and daily contacts vs. weekly ones, and I never felt like he was in a rush to see someone else. There's just no reason to go to anyone else; I'm hooked. read more

I went to get a pair of glasses because my current pair is hurting my ears and I'd like to try a different style. They were very unhelpful. After a bit of wait, a man came out and bellowed my name, then proceeded to be very unhelpful with the frames. I asked what shape a certain lens was the response was "I don't know." Uhm...isn't that your job? I stated a few times I didn't want a certain type and he kept suggesting them. I'd picked out simple ones to try on and he kept handing me huge elaborate colorful ones. He then tried to get me to pay close to 500 dollars for a special type of lens! He kept trying to upsell me and since he was such a poor salesman to begin with, it was awkward. I left without getting anything and he seemed bothered. I maybe took up twenty minutes. They also didn't have any close up mirrors and he never had me sit down or anything, just push em on your face and get out. They did have a large amount of glasses, but no budget options and no discount for paying upfront or in cash. Not impressed overall. read more

I brought in frames that I had bought from Warby Parker and was told that because I had bought my frames from somewhere else that they would charge me $40 to put their prescription lenses in them, which is insane! After being told this, they told me that the blue light filter I wanted to put on the lenses would cost an additional $130. The total to get my prescription put in the frames I brought was over $300. I stepped outside and called Warby Parker and was told I could get the exact same prescription with the same coating for $50 TOTAL. When I told the woman that I wouldn't be purchasing the prescription for Valley Eye Care, she was visibly angered but didn't say anything negative. This place is a complete rip off in comparison to the service you can get from Warby Parker, who has a store location in Portland. As a college student without vision insurance, this was a completely unrealistic expense for me and probably other students in the same situation. I am baffled by the price of Valley Eye Care and how they were about to charge me 7 times the price for the exact same thing. Additionally, without vision insurance, just to get my prescription it cost $230. Save your money and don't come here. read more

After a referral I tried Valley for multiple appointments, but they were just too disorganized - and expensive! They actually managed to "lose" my third appointment which was the final straw. We have better shops in town. No surprise; The woman who referred me now tells me she also goes elsewhere for eye care. Update: On two occasions I sent my concerns to the eye doctor who helped me, explaining why I left their business, yet I still receive postcards reminding me to schedule a checkup. Either they don't manage their mailing list or the Dr isn't seeing the complaints. read more

They were quick in getting me onto the cancellation list, and managed to get an appointment for me within 3 business days. The appointment was on time. I have been getting my exams here for a few years now. Sad to see the staff has changed, but some of their best staff is still there. Their opticians are very professional and really helpful. This does not feel like a cheap optical shop where they try to up sell you on everything. I did not feel pressured into something I didn't want. The ladies at the front desk were great but when one of their optician's got to us, this is where we left pretty angry, A guy in his 40's helped out. When he got to use, he asked if we havr a prescription. If he had checked out the file at the front desk, he would have figured that out. When I asked for poly lenses, we were told in a rude manner that they no longer go with poly. That's fine, but the way he delivered his message could have been better and less stuck up. When I asked for a quote. He provided a blown up price. When i asked further if they provide discounts for folks without insurance, he flat out said no. When we got to the car we were wondering why he was so unhelpful. When I looked at the clock, we realized it was 10 minutes til closing time. read more

I have gotten two pairs of glasses there and neither were good. The first glasses were frameless and they did not attach the screws properly and the glasses were wobbly. After two or three attempts the frames were not great but they were OK. I returned to them because they are the only place in Corvallis I can buy the style of frames I like. The second time, the frames were solid but lenses were messed up. If I look up, I see well. If I look straight ahead the focus is off. This office has changed significantly since their senior optometrist has retired. The office feels tense as the front office staff women mostly dress in very unprofessional, uncomfortable clothing. I didn't enjoy hearing one of the eye doctors argue with one of the office staff in front of all the people in the waiting area. Was glad to see that they hired a woman optometrist. This office could go either way in the future. I hope they get rid of the high heels and tight skirts up front. Not comfortable or professional. read more
