I love going to Dr. Baer's office. It is akin to time travel. No computers, no harried staff, no one that is testy because they are overworked and stressed to the gills. Teri at the front desk is as sweet as molasses. Fancy equipment isn't needed to do a good eye test. And if that is important you can find that anywhere. But what you don't find often enough is an eye doctor that is caring, competent and thorough. If you need referred to an ophthalmologist Dr Baer will refer you. You really don't know how good your Optomitrist is until you call him early on a Sunday morning when you have a child with something stuck on her eyeball. That happened to me. Dr. Baer met us at his office within 30 minutes, treated my daughters injury, and called all around town until he found a pharmacy open that could fill the perscription he wrote. I've seen a handful of different optometrists and I can say Dr. Baer is probably the best one I've ever seen. Every other optometrist I have seen would take at most 30 minutes and wouldn't actually conduct the whole exam his/herself, but Dr. Baer spent a whole hour looking over every detail (depth of field perception, color-blindness, retina health, etc.) on top of figuring out your vision without a minute wasted. I never knew that an eye exam could be done so thoroughly and extensively. I would definitely come back for my yearly exam and highly recommend him! read more

Wow, what a wonderful experience! We found Dr. Baer when searching for an eye doctor to have our annual eye exam, and are so glad we did. He is very pleasant, professional and thorough. This is the most complete eye exam I have ever had. He explained what he was doing, reviewed his findings and offered ample opportunities for questions. His office may not be fancy or modern, but is that really important? The woman that ran the front office (Terry?) was so pleasant and helpful, and dealt with insurance paperwork in a streamlined manner. The office had toys for the kids, magazines and a nice aquarium. I've never had such a thorough eye exam and I've been getting them since I was about 7 years old, I'm almost 50 now. The equipment and office decor are a bit older, but so what. If it ain't broke.... I got more info about my eyes than I've ever gotten before. Dr Baer was very kind and patient and efficient. Even though he's examined many thousands of patients and must be able to do it in his sleep, you'd never know because he was intent and focused and listened. Dr. Baer knows his stuff and you'll benefit. Both my mom and I went to him for contact lens prescriptions and some other vision questions. Both of us has very complicated eyes (thanks to genetics) and my mom is aging, so she had an additional question about perfecting her prescription and cataracts. I wanted some help with my eyes getting too dry with contacts. Dr. Baer helped both of us... optimizing our prescriptions and telling us what we could do with other kinds of eye care and, frankly, what would not make a difference for my mom with her cataracts concern. Plan on a longish appointment that comes with Dr. Baer's thoroughness and long experience. He'll test your eyes every which way and will take the time to explain the results, and his recommendations to you. His office staff is friendly, efficient and accommodating. In addition, Dr. Baer's office was able to get me in right away and, when my mom wanted her appointment on short notice, that worked, too. The cost of the exam was typical for Corvallis, but the quality quite superior--- even to the eye exams and prescriptions have have gotten from optometrists in other cities. Take it from the person with the complicated eyes.... this is the optometrist you want on your side. read more

Wow! I just had a great and thorough eye exam with Dr. Baer. This was my first time visit and it took approximately 1 hour to complete an eye exam for my contacts and glasses. The decor and equipment seem a little outdated, but that's okay because the service makes up for it. Dr. Baer takes his time to explain what each machine does and the results. He did some eye tests that I've never had done with Kaiser before (at least not that I'm aware of what they did!) Terri, the receptionist, is friendly and very sweet. The appointments do not seem too hard to come by, just give them a call and someone will help you out! So glad I found this office :) read more

Dr. Baer and his staff are awesome! The office has a warm feel to it, and everyone is very kind. I went in for an annual eye exam, and I'd have to say that he's the best eye doctor that I've ever seen. Unlike bigger clinics or hospitals where nurses/doctors treat patients like they're cars in an assembly line, Dr. Baer takes his time to explain and educate about each test that will be conducted. He is thorough, professional, friendly, and polite. The exam itself was the most complete and comprehensive one that I've ever had. No part in the process felt rushed, and after the exam, I had a genuine grasp about the status of my vision. I truly felt that he cared about me as a human/patient rather than a money cow to be milked. I'll definitely return to his office for my next eye exam. read more

I've seen many, many optometrists over the years as I've moved around the country, and can say that by far he is one of the best.

I would have to agree with the other 5 star reviewers. I called around Corvallis, asking for eye exam prices. Everyone else charged $150 and if you have contacts there's an additional $50 "fitting fee". I finally found the right place to go after calling Dr. Baer's office. They only charged $99 flat for everything, including a free sample of contacts until my new order arrived. They are very transparent about the way they do business and take care of their patients. The staff is very friendly and professional- these people are a gym in the valley. read more
