This family-owned business lives up to their name. If you want a professional job at a reasonable price, to be treated like a person, and not a number, this is definitely a shop you can put your confidence in. It's kind of an interesting how I came across this wonderful shop. Although I live in El Cajon, I'd always lived closer to La Mesa, and still tend to use some of those businesses. I'm so glad I did my research, and ended up taking my clock here. The repair was less than half the price of another estimate; I saved on gas; and am for supporting businesses in my locale. I've gained a local connection, and trust them, making me want to seek out other clocks for resale, knowing there's room for me to make it worth it. I'd found an adorable little German-made clock that you could see the moving parts, in a thrift store, for $4.99. It was ticking, but even before researching it, I was sure, even if broken, and sold for parts or repair, it would be profitable. I was excited, seeing those moving parts! When I got home I saw it wasn't keeping time; and, didn't notice it even had an adjustment lever to achieve accuracy....Good thing, because I wasn't aware it was jammed, and upside down; the dial to move the hands wasn't fluid, but good enough. Being on a budget, I didn't consider repairing it, and selling it "as is," but as I did my research I figured it probably was worth the investment. After considering getting it serviced, depending upon the price, I knew I could get more money if I presented it with a repair receipt. I went on a quest to find a reputable repair shop. My third try was Valley Clock Shop, and I'm so happy with my choice. First, I received a referral from a shipping place in La Mesa, I've used for years, to an antique store in downtown La Mesa that repairs and ships clocks. I went directly there, but is nearly impossible to ever find parking in downtown La Mesa, and drove around the block a few times, including through a construction zone...I wasn't giving up easily, and pulled over to call the shop, but they had a recording that they'd been temporarily closed, but would reopen the next week. I'll never know what they may have charged...although, I'm guessing that the real estate overhead in downtown La Mesa, likely drives up prices. Determined to get this done, after that, I went to a repair shop that always had intrigued me, and have seen its signage for decades. I was quoted $75. Deciding maybe it would be best to sell the clock "as is," I called the first shop, less than a mile from my residence, before I'd left for the day, when Googling "closest clock repair to me." Valley Clock Shop. I saw a picture of the signage, and liked the old-fashioned "mom and pop" feel, and in skimming through the nice reviews, got a nice feeling about this family-owned business that has a renowned reputation. As soon as I entered the shop, I felt at home. It also has a "museum feel," as one can view several eras of clocks, and the sound of many ticking, is magical! Tyler immediately made me feel comfortable in dropping off the clock, without me having an estimate. Early the next week, I received a phone call, and was told the repair would only cost $29.99. I couldn't believe this was less than half the price I was quoted. I'm in! I got to meet Kirk, the son, who took over his father's business. He's a very nice man who gives back to the community, mentoring others. I had a nice time chatting with the staff. After picking it up, I did a "duh," no no that I know better to not do, for I have sold antiques for years....I opened the little door on the bottom to spruce up the clear plastic veneer with a cotton swab. Mistake!...never go inside an item you are not expert to repair. By accident, I moved the dial that moves the hands, causing it to jam. Knowing full-well, that ya don't do this, ever, to such antiques, I came in embarrassed, tail-tucked, to tell them, and dropped it off, saying "if there's another cost, oh well...a lesson learned." What's even cooler is that it was Friday, late afternoon, the night before the weekend-long Harvest Festival in La Mesa, and the shop would be running a booth all weekend. Tyler told me that I may not get it back for about a week. I was fine with it, and told them to take their time. I can't believe it...by the time I got home, hours later, there was a message that my clock was fixed, and ready for pick up! I could've had it that night. It was a quick adjustment for Kirk, but maybe another place would've charged me. Most of us are not experts in a lot of things, and we trust that people will be honest. I'd been looking for a clock repair shop and really had no idea where to go. After talking to a few friends and doing a little research I decided on Valley Clock Shop in El Cajon. It's a second generation family business and once you meet the owner Kirk and talk to him you know you've come to the right place. We set an appointment for the following afternoon for my clock to be picked up and taken to the shop for repair. I Had Kirk come over to my House to tell me what it was going to take to fix my Molyneux Grandfather Clock. With a price that we both agreed on that was far for such a discared for Clock and needing so much work. Valley Clock Shop had my Clock for about two weeks and when they brought her home. WOW!!! My 23 year old Howard Miller Grandfather clock needed to be refurbished. Kurt took my clock to his shop to do the refurbishing. Took it on 10-11-21 and promised it by Thanksgiving. He returned the clock on 11-5-21 long before Thanksgiving. He did a beautiful good and went above and beyond with his customer service. I would highly recommend him. My Father purchased a clock for my Mother over 50 years ago and it's been in our family ever since. All these years we have referred to it as "Grandmother." Father stopped it some years ago but it's always remained a furnishing. With the recent passing of Father it was time to get Grandmother working again. I inherited this Howard Miller clock once my folks passed on. The clock is 35 years old and hasn't worked for many years. Kirk came to the house and removed the clock from the cabinet to take back to his shop for repair. After two weeks for repair time, Kirk returned to reinstall the clock. We came across Valley Clock Shop at the Oktoberfest celebration in La Mesa. They had a booth, and this is where I first met Kirk. He's a very friendly guy, and obviously passionate about his profession- clocks! I inherited a grandmother clock that's about 40 yrs old, and it has never worked during the time that I have had it. I always wanted to not only get the inner workings fixed, but also to have the cabinet repainted and finished. I knew that Kirk was gonna be the guy to do it... Within a week or so, he was at our house for the original consult and quote. I was very happy with the price and eager to do business. Things happened fast after that, and Kirk kept communicating with me the whole time. When it was time to choose colors and finishes for the cabinet, I visited his shop and looked at some examples by their expert woodwork collaborator, Ski. We made a decision, and again after that- the process was very quick. I am overwhelmed at my "new" clock! Kirk brought the finished product to the house the other day, and I can't stop looking at it. I wasn't sure all these years what the clock was going to finally look/sound like once I got it fixed, but the outcome has surpassed all my hopes for it. I just love it! I had given my parents a beautiful grandfather clock that a friend of mine had and had taken very good care of. She was moving and decided at the last minute to not take the clock. She had already had the movers take the weights and pendulum off for the move, so that was the only thing that needed to be put back on after delivering it to my parents home. Valley clock was called and Kirk came out to put everything back on and get the clock running again. My parents had never had a grandfather clock and being in their 80's, didn't really know how it worked. Kirk finished, charged them the hundred dollars quoted and left. Shortly afterwards, my dad noticed the clock was not working. The pendulum was not swinging and the time staying the same. He called Kirk, who told him to wait until the next day to see if it starts working. Thinking this was strange advice, my dad then called the shop and the woman sent Kirk back out. In the meantime, my dad pushed the pendulum and it started to swing on it's own. Kirk came back and was upset that he drove back and the clock was now working. He wanted to charge my dad another $100 fee and was very cocky with my dad. They will not be calling this clock shop for service anymore. read more

Valley Clock Shops was extremely competent and responsive to repairing a very old Seth Thomas wall clock and an old Grandmother clock. Kirk personally did the on-site inspection and we were impressed with his expertise and great customer sensitivity. When our clocks were returned after in-shop repairs and overhaul, they ran perfectly. Kirk even called the next day to make sure we were happy and offer his help if we needed it to set or adjust them. I recently purchased a very expensive 200 year old French clock while vacationing in Amsterdam. After about one year I started having trouble with it stopping for no reason and not keeping accurate time. I brought it in to Valley Clock Shop and talked with Kirk and left it nervously in his care. He promptly called and told me the clock's internals were in bad shape and he wasn't sure if it could be repaired. He encouraged me to come to the shop so I could see what he was talking about, which I did. Some of the parts were so small, I had to borrow his magnifying glasses to see them. I stressed how much the clock meant to me, how much faith I had in him and that it needed to be rebuilt no matter the cost. He agreed to pursue it, calling me every week to update me. After a short six weeks he called to tell me he was successful and the clock was running. I was surprised, relieved and happy. My wife took my deceased fathers very old clock to them as a surprise for me when it stopped working. After it was there for 2 months they told us they cant find parts for it to repair it. They did tell her they could install new parts to make it work again with a battery. They removed all the old parts out of it and gutted my dads clock. Then they put in a very poor imitation quartz clock and then they nailed the back shut. Keep in mind this clock did lift up from the back. With in 2 months it stopped the chiming. Then it stopped the time. When called they said put in a new battery. We told them they nailed it shut they said bring it to them and they will charge us labor plus parts (battery) . I did not have a good experience and if you use them make sure you get all the parts back. The new clock repair man said he could have rebuilt my dads clock but now we dont have the parts. Excellent customer service!! I brought in a Japanese cuckoo clock that needed a lot of work. Kirk was very up front on the different options of how it could be repaired at different prices. Although I elected not to repair it for now, I was so impressed I brought in my antique Howard Miller grandfather clock and had it repaired. I am 100% satisfied with the results. I spent several hundred dollars having my grandfather clock worked on by this company. I live in Ramona so I had to take it in. The first time he "fixed" it it did not work when I got it home. The hooks were broken off all the weights as if he had dropped the box they were in. He said they were all fine when it left here, yeah right! I called and he told me that the "tick and tock were off" ??? so I brought it back (I had to locate and replace the hooks for the weights as he did not have new replacements ???). He supposedly repaired it again (charged me again) but when I got it home it still did not work. I called again and he told me I did something wrong when I moved it into my house. I have moved this clock several times and never had a problem leveling and setting up the clock. Each time I brought it in I was charged more money. He said he would come out and fix it at my home. I never heard from him again. I took it to another clock repair shop and they told me he did not do the work I was charged for (replace all bushings in the mechanism). I had to pay again for the work I paid him to do, but instead he ripped me off to the tune of over $500 and I got nothing in return. The other clock repair installed new bushings in the clock and it now works great. YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YOU USE THIS CLOCK SHOP! read more
