I took my Gustav Becker estate sale find into the shop based on Yelp reviews and I was not disappointed. They did a complete overhaul inside and out, and actually found "rat gut" which was originally used for the weight cables. He wasn't sure if it could still be found. Some clocks have fishing line. My final price was under the original quote. It was a 6-8 week job, and we'll worth the wait. Recommended to us by a friend. We had picked up our 1970's era grandfather clock at an estate sale. It ran for a decade then stopped running about 7 years ago. The Valley Clock Shop saved a family treasure! I inherited an antique clock that has been in the family for years. The clock had hung on the wall without any issues until one day it fell off; needless to say I was devastated. I was lucky that the entire thing didn't explode into pieces but the damage was extensive. It sat in pieces on my dresser for over a year - I was afraid to have someone look at it because I knew they were going to say it was a lost cause. I finally got the nerve to take it in to see if there was anyway of saving our 130+ year old clock. Because of their good reputation I decided to take it to The Valley Clock Shop - it was the best decision I could have ever made. I called before I went down there to find out if they did wood repairs to clocks. I explained what happened and how bad it was damaged and Kirk told me to bring it in and he'd take a look at it. When I brought it in Kirk was very honest with me and showed me that not only was the wood exterior damaged but the clock had also been affected. Needless to say that was something I was hoping not to hear. I'm not sure if he felt sorry for me or if he just wanted a challenge but he agreed to try and repair it. He showed me around his shop (which is very clean and organized) and walked me through what he would be doing to repair and restore the clock. Kirk felt pretty confident about repairing the woodwork but he was very honest and told me he wasn't sure if he'd be able to fix the actual clock. He called and updated me as to how things were going and let me know that he was in fact able to fix the clock. He also kept me updated as to the approximate time it would take to finish the repair, which was much faster than I thought possible. My husband and I went to pick up the clock today and we couldn't believe our eyes - Kirk is a magician! The clock not only looked amazing but worked; the timing on it is perfect. The clock looks better than it did when it hung on our wall before it was damaged. The crown of the clock is removable and it always tilted back, he fixed it to where it is supported to sit up straight. The door to access the clock was a bit hard to open and always scraped against the base, he leveled the door and now it opens up nice and easy. I don't know what he did to the wood but it has a luster to it - it's beautiful. Another thing he did that just blew me away was that the bracket (not sure what it's really called) that held the clock mechanism to the wood had to be bent back in shape - which was quite a feat. Like a blacksmith he had to very slowly work the metal piece to straighten it. He was so thorough and explained how to properly hang the clock to get it to work optimally, he even used one of his other clocks to show us what to look and listen for to know when the clock is in the right position. He went over winding it up and even providing us with a key (after the clock fell I put the key somewhere safe - so safe I'm not sure where I put it). Kirks skill and craftsmanship is impressive and you can tell he truly loves and is passionate about what he does. I know this is long but he worked a miracle and I wanted to share how much time, effort, and care he put into saving something that's so special to us. The Valley Clock Shop went above and beyond on our recent grandfather clock repair. I can't say enough about Kirk and his skill and dedication to his trade and his customers! I recently had an English 250 year old grandfather's clock shipped from PA to my home in CA after the death of my father. During transport, the clock incurred damage. Kirk and his team lovingly restored the clock to its former beauty and it is running perfectly! Kirk spent a great deal of time thinking about ways to restore the clock while maintaining its integrity and keeping its antique character in tact. It was a labor of love as it took a great deal longer than he anticipated due to the clock's age. Kirk and his team of craftsmen are extremely nice, very knowledgeable, professional and do excellent work in a timely manner--and all at a reasonable price too. Years ago, I inherited an antique French mantel clock that belonged to my great-aunt. It was said to have previously belonged to her mother. As a child, I remember visiting my great aunt's home on occasion and being so enamored by her clock. I would stare at it anxiously waiting for it to chime, as I studied the ethereal-like translucent glow of the stone; the brightly gilded metalwork; and the allegorical shapes like lion head pulls and claw feet. It was always so magical to me since I had never seen anything like it before--it certainly made an indelible impression on me. When the clock was passed down to me, it had been packed away and had not seen the light of day for many years. Despite losing one of its pulls and incurring minor damage over the years from general wear-and-tear, it was still in pretty good shape overall. However, I mistakenly damaged it prior to the pandemic while moving. I was mortified and felt obliged to fix it. I decided to take it to The Valley Clock Shop because of the many positive reviews I read online. Also, as a family owned and operated business, I could tell they obviously took great pride in the clock services they provide, so I could trust their evaluation of the clock to see if it was salvageable. When I told Kirk about the clock and its deep sentimental value to me, we agreed on a phased approach. A preliminary cleaning first because the clock was covered in soot and grime. In doing so, he would then be able to tell me if the internal mechanism could be restored to a working order. Within a few days Kirk called me to say that the clock could be restored, and I was overjoyed. When the day came to retrieve the clock, my shear astonishment immediately moved me to tears. It looked EXACTLY the way I remembered it as a child so many years ago. Kirk even told me some things about the clock that I didn't know. I have a Ridgeway grandfather clock that stopped running a few years ago. I kind of just put it on the back burner and forgot about it. I finally called Valley Clock Shops and they were incredibly friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. I found this awesome Hones 30" Bears Den Cuckoo Clock at an estate sale a month ago and purchased it. I thought it looked really cool but I have zero knowledge on the cost and maintenance requirements of such a thing. I was referred to Kirk by a friend of mine and the experience was so cool. I took my heirloom cuckoo clock in for an evaluation and/or repair about a month ago. The cuckoo was not going back inside the clock and the music had stopped playing due to this fact. I asked them to look it over and see what could be done. Upon the initial inspection of the clock, the gentleman stated that the music box probably can't be repaired as it is original and very old. He stated, "They work hard and will just quit working and nothing else can be done to fix it at this age". I understood and just wanted him to look it over and see what could be done to get it working again. I was quoted $350.00 for repairs and give them a week. I said that was fine, the clock is sentimental and I want it working again. I called back after a week to get an update on my cuckoo clock progress. I was told nothing can be done to fix the clock. There was no charge due to the fact it can't be fixed. Well, I wanted another opinion because the clock was working perfectly until the cuckoo stopped and so did the music. So I decided to try another clock repair. I called Timekeepers of Escondido because of the excellent reviews. I drove all the way up there with my clock in hand. I repeated the situation with the cuckoo clock and Mr. Kivrak looked at my clock and said, " I can fix it no problem" I was thrilled! He did in fact "fix" my cuckoo clock!! All it needed was to be oiled and maintenance. That was it...OIL!! If you want a professional job at a reasonable price, to be treated like a person, and not a number, this is definitely a shop you can put your confidence in. It's kind of an interesting how I came across this wonderful shop. Although I live in El Cajon, I'd always lived closer to La Mesa, and still tend to use some of those businesses. I'm so glad I did my research, and ended up taking my clock here. The repair was less than half the price of another estimate; I saved on gas; and am for supporting businesses in my locale. I've gained a local connection, and trust them, making me want to seek out other clocks for resale, knowing there's room for me to make it worth it. I'd found an adorable little German-made clock that you could see the moving parts, in a thrift store, for $4.99. It was ticking, but even before researching it, I was sure, even if broken, and sold for parts or repair, it would be profitable. I was excited, seeing those moving parts! When I got home I saw it wasn't keeping time; and, didn't notice it even had an adjustment lever to achieve accuracy....Good thing, because I wasn't aware it was jammed, and upside down; the dial to move the hands wasn't fluid, but good enough. Being on a budget, I didn't consider repairing it, and selling it "as is," but as I did my research I figured it probably was worth the investment. After considering getting it serviced, depending upon the price, I knew I could get more money if I presented it with a repair receipt. I went on a quest to find a reputable repair shop. My third try was Valley Clock Shop, and I'm so happy with my choice. First, I received a referral from a shipping place in La Mesa, I've used for years, to an antique store in downtown La Mesa that repairs and ships clocks. I went directly there, but is nearly impossible to ever find parking in downtown La Mesa, and drove around the block a few times, including through a construction zone...I wasn't giving up easily, and pulled over to call the shop, but they had a recording that they'd been temporarily closed, but would reopen the next week. I'll never know what they may have charged...although, I'm guessing that the real estate overhead in downtown La Mesa, likely drives up prices. Determined to get this done, after that, I went to a repair shop that always had intrigued me, and have seen its signage for decades. I was quoted $75. Deciding maybe it would be best to sell the clock "as is," I called the first shop, less than a mile from my residence, before I'd left for the day, when Googling "closest clock repair to me." Valley Clock Shop. I saw a picture of the signage, and liked the old-fashioned "mom and pop" feel, and in skimming through the nice reviews, got a nice feeling about this family-owned business that has a renowned reputation. As soon as I entered the shop, I felt at home. It also has a "museum feel," as one can view several eras of clocks, and the sound of many ticking, is magical! Tyler immediately made me feel comfortable in dropping off the clock, without me having an estimate. Early the next week, I received a phone call, and was told the repair would only cost $29.99. I couldn't believe this was less than half the price I was quoted. I'm in! I got to meet Kirk, the son, who took over his father's business. He's a very nice man who gives back to the community, mentoring others. I had a nice time chatting with the staff. After picking it up, I did a "duh," no no that I know better to not do, for I have sold antiques for years....I opened the little door on the bottom to spruce up the clear plastic veneer with a cotton swab. Mistake!...never go inside an item you are not expert to repair. By accident, I moved the dial that moves the hands, causing it to jam. Knowing full-well, that ya don't do this, ever, to such antiques, I came in embarrassed, tail-tucked, to tell them, and dropped it off, saying "if there's another cost, oh well...a lesson learned." What's even cooler is that it was Friday, late afternoon, the night before the weekend-long Harvest Festival in La Mesa, and the shop would be running a booth all weekend. Tyler told me that I may not get it back for about a week. I was fine with it, and told them to take their time. I can't believe it...by the time I got home, hours later, there was a message that my clock was fixed, and ready for pick up! I could've had it that night. It was a quick adjustment for Kirk, but maybe another place would've charged me. Most of us are not experts in a lot of things, and we trust that people will be honest.
