I really regret seeing Jan Freeman as my therapist for trauma. Over the course of around 1.5 years, the therapy went from ok to feeling harmful.
The following things are just some of the things I experienced, there's plenty I'm not listing here.
She called me "weird", "judgy", and "naive" on a regular basis. She appeared to look at her phone during my expensive sessions with her. And she seemed to interrupt me all the time.
Additionally, she seems to have definite boundary issues. Jan would appear to become visibly upset if I disagreed with her, and seemed to often undermine my perceptions and my judgement regularly, and even seemed to victim blame me.
She also seemed to diminish my health concerns all the time. In fact, during the period of time that she was my therapist, I had to have major emergency surgery. As I recall, however, she told me soon after that I could be a hypochondriac, even though I had just been diagnosed by a physician with a serious disease, which I had told Jan about. She is not a doctor or nurse- so why did she feel the need to tell me this?
When I was sick and needed to cancel (like before and after my surgery) it seemed like she was always questioning my honesty and suggested frequently that I was just making up that I wasn't feeling good. This caused unnecessary stress on me in regards to my health and her assumptions of me.
Ironically enough, as I recall it, she cancelled frequently without advanced notice.
When I wanted to decrease therapy frequency, I remember her saying that instead, I needed to double the frequency. So I did, thinking at the time that she knew what she was doing. I was seeing her for trauma, after all, and assumed she had good judgement.
When I did quit, I remember that several times she tried to reach out to me and my family over the course of about 1/2 a year- even though I was not her client anymore. The professional thing would've been to respect my boundaries- and if she felt so concerned, she should have contacted my doctor.
Therapists need supervision and therapy for themselves to prevent these kinds of things from happening. I believe Jan did care and tried to help in her own way, but too many lines were crossed.
I am now afraid to see any therapist because of this experience. I feel the need to post this on Yelp to prevent others from experiencing this- 'cause I wish I had known.
I do not want any more texts or phone calls to me or my family. read more
