It would be really hard to not love the folks at Red Dog Books, an indie bookstore known for its…read moreGreenwood spot (which I believe has closed), a brand new Avon spot, and this lovely little surprisingly large hole-in-the-wall on the northeast side of Indy just east of Shadeland Avenue on East 46th Street.
If you loved the musty charm of Red Dog's Greenwood spot, you'll love this somewhat inaccessible but still charming little place with friendly employees, a ton of books adding up to literary chaos, a non-profit spirit, and the best prices in Indy for used books.
Take that HPB.
I believe this spot used to house auto repair. You can tell Red Dog is fixing it up and cleaning it up. It's still musty. It's still a bit divey. The books are stacked high and there are sales galore. If you're looking for strict organization? You won't find it here beyond a few sections clearly designated within genre (very loosely) and some sales areas where you can get $2-3 books. They also carry DVD's, audio books, and even VHS.
Yes, I still have a VHS player.
This is a women-owned, disabled owned shop. They really are a non-profit organization, as well.
They offer curbside pick-up - I'll admit I'm not quite sure how that works unless the books are secretly organized way more than I believe they are.
I will utter a word of caution as a wheelchair user. Accessibility lacks a bit at the front entrance. There's a small step to the sidewalk in the parking lot - there's no designated parking (I actually had to move my car over when someone parked next to me unexpectedly). I was able to jump the step myself, however, if you have mobility issues just be aware. When you go in the front door, there's also an unexpected step down. It's a slight step that I initially missed - fortunately, my wheelchair could handle it. As I left, the employee noted that there's another option that is more accessible and they're happy to assist if you call them. While they didn't help upon entry, this same employee did help at the front door as I was leaving. Super friendly.
Once inside, I found the aisles surprisingly accessible with the exception of a couple corners. I think a larger chair might struggle, however, most manuals should be fine.
I found the selection really solid, though they had rows and rows of romance novels and I couldn't find a single nurse romance novel. Yes, I collect nurse romance novels. Leave me alone - you try having almost 100 surgeries and not getting a massive thing for nurses.
Seriously, though. They're still getting organized and straightened out. I already love the place and have a feeling it will only get better.
I do know they're struggling a bit as they get settled. I'd love, love, love for Yelpers to show up and give them some love. If you can't find a used book here, you probably can't find one anywhere.
The eastside really needed a shop like Red Dog Books. There was a fairly steady stream, though certainly they could use more to help spread the word.
Definitely a thumbs up for me and I'm going to do what I can to give them a boost!
