I think that Klotsche is pretty freakin' solid. I used to rock this spot while I was a student at UWM, and between the facilities themselves and the classes, I thought it a great option. Also, it was free to use, which was nice. Separate cardio/weightlifting workout areas, basketball courts, a pool, running track, raquetball courts, and "Group X" classes (everything from spinning to yoga and core classes) made for a great, comprehensive offering of options. Only a few negatives: -the cardio center is always always packed -the weight room is full of beefy jock dude bros which can make it intimidating if you're a female student who's in their late(r) twenties -as Ari said, if you aren't a student, it's probably not worth it monetarily read more

UWM Klotsche Center - Gyms Near Me - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I use to visit the Klotsche Center a lot when I was working on my Master's at UWM. I was amazed by the size of this place!! They definitely have a lot of equipment in the general workout area and seem to keep things clean and in good working order, which amazes me because there is A LOT of daily traffic. With that said, it gets very busy certain times of the day and you will end up waiting to use machines. What frustrated me the most were the girls with curled hair, tons of makeup, and the shortest of shorts barley walking (like 2.0 walk) on the treadmill or elliptical that never broke a sweat. Then they go sit on machines or "stretch" for 20-30 minutes, clearly trying to pick up the bros that also hog gym equipment; these people also have the nerve to stare at the females who are there to ACTUALLY work out. Once I saw this sign that said: "If you still look pretty at the end of your workout, then you didn't train hard enough." That's the motto I go by when I'm at the gym, which is why the little gym bunnies and bros *really* bug me. So, I learned to workout at very odd times - like 6am-7:30am or in the middle of the day when all the undergrads had class. It was usually pretty free Sat&Sun mornings too. I also learned to run on the indoor track; I got great enjoyment out of speeding by the others with sweat dripping down my face. Klotsche is a good facility if you are a student here and the segregated fees will cover the cost (5 stars there). Be prepared to experiment with best times to go if you want to get a real workout in (definitely a -1, if not -2). I do not recommend purchasing a membership if you are a community member or alumni. It's is ridiculously expensive and you still have to pay for parking in the structure! read more

First off, the locker rental (they provide the lock) for a semester is only $21! How amazing is that? It's a great deal. You can bring your own lock and rent by the day for $1, but why on earth would you do that if you plan on working out more than 20 times in a semester? I will say, though I am a student who could just open my big mouth and ask, that I don't understand where the women's sauna is...I think it's this big door near the center of the locker rooms where the scale is, but I've been too scared to try. There is no signage directing people as to where to find the sauna. This is also true for the pool entrance, I assume it is somewhere in the back of the locker room, but I am a little uncomfortable rummaging through naked people staring around trying to find it. At the K, I use the weight room 90% of the time. I know people think that it may seem a little uninviting to women, purely because there aren't many women lifting, but honestly, no one cares. No one cares that you're in the gym, that you're a female, or anything. Everyone is there to work out and I have found that if you too are there to work out, there is already a polite level of respect, even from the men. I'll admit that I personally feel embarrassed because I still have a large portion of fat over muscle on my body, but it is derived from my own self-consciousness, not anything that anyone else does. I absolutely love the FreeMotion and Magnum brand of machines in the weight room. I particularly enjoy the rowing machine and the leg curls. Everything seems new and kept in good condition. Each machine provides very clear descriptions of images of how to properly use them. As with most places, be sure you wipe down after use! I admit that if the gym is busy, you could spend some time standing around waiting for a wipe down towel. This could be easily fixed with them simply putting 2 towels at each spray bottle location. read more

Pros: Swimming pool, racquetball courts, huge basketball courts, intramurals, numerous exercise classes with well-trained exercise-enthusiasts. Decent weight-room area, large track. Showers. Sauna. ROWING MACHINES. Lockers you can rent for only $21 for the entire semester. Which is incredibly cheap at only about $5.25 a month. Hours of the gym are wonderful. Open until 11:00 P.M. Biggest Pro out of them all: Nobody gives a shit. If you a there to actually work out or just get some game of pick-up ball in, people will either leave you alone or be friendly enough to invite you to play. Cons: Like Rachel said, the weight room could be intimidating to those who don't lift often. I know guys that literally spend 5-6 hours a day in there. But, you will find those "GUYZ" at most gyms. All in all, solid gym, especially if you are a student. I find the best way to cope with the stress of school is to exercise. Try it out! read more

This workout facility is hard to review. There are plenty positives and negatives. Unfortunately for this place the negatives outweigh the positives. There is a good range of equipment but upstairs the treadmills/elliptical/bikes are always packed. There isn't enough machines for the amount of people. Also no one follows the time limits. They have a pool (which you can't use if the swim team needs it...yes that's right it doesn't matter if you are paying for it and they get a free education). Also they have racquetball courts, b-ball courts, and a track that I would at least try once. The membership fee is outrageous. If you are a full time student and pay segregated fees then you pay it in your tuition to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. But if you are an outside member of the community, faculty, etc then the fees are outrageous for the quality of this workout facility. For parking you need to pay for it, which I find very interesting since it should be included in your fees like a normal workout facility. I would say if you are a student, definitely check it out since its included in your tuition. Outside community members, you are better off at your local YMCA, Golds Gym etc. read more

I have been using the facilities regularly since 1989 -- until 2015, sporadically 1984-1989 and 2015-2016. The renovation and expansion gave it the ambiance of a luxury hotel and a wonderful place to hang out at; even a small dining area and internet kiosk. Both the staff, the patrons were always friendly and inviting; and you could feel the ambiance in the air saying "welcome to the fold, and go for it", whether you were new to the facility or it was like a second home. Counted as a plus is that the older legacy area (particularly the track and field area) were still help somewhat available, outside the times of scheduled events or group activities. I can literally say that I enjoyed the wonderful ambiance of the renovated and expanded facilities for the first time 5 years before it existed (in recurring precognitive dreams); and to actually go there for the "first" time after it reopened was like coming back home to a place I had longed for, matching in every detail what I had already seen and experienced beforehand. These are all positive recommendations, but tempered by what can only be described as a black mark. Recently, the facility has gone on a prudish kick (late 2014), putting severe restrictions on attire that are out of kilter with current fashions. (Even running without shoes, with socks which I've frequently done or barefoot, and which is very common amongst certain groups of people, is now banned.) The reasons underlying these recent changes I was not aware of until more recently. Essentially it amounts to an outcropping and expression of the very kind of partisan extremism that has afflicted other venues, be it cable news, movie franchises, political discourse, campus settings, that has turned these places onto culture war zones. It is a black mark that supersedes all the positives of a venue that was literally a place of my dreams. Freedoms that we have enjoyed for decades are - in this environment of extremism - suddenly declared off-limits. It is unacceptable, and I strongly recommend against using the facility; to make a statement, voting with your feet, by using the many outdoor venues nearby that provide a fresher, more natural (and beautiful) and refreshing environment for a more healthy workout ... and one that requires no payments, costs of rentals or other charges and imposes no restrictions on time. If you want a stronger upper body: do more pushups, and with weights attached. If you want a stronger lower body, walk, run using the many trails or running tracks nearby. This is a very beautiful city, especially the riverwalk, and you should not deny yourself these experiences. A particularly excellent workout is obtained by doing sprints on the beach. If you want a stronger core, do these things and more, like abdominal crunches. In the winter, you get especially good workouts just walking in deep virgin show, never mind running. And if you want the company of friends, go in groups. As for me: I could renew membership indefinitely. But, the restrictions of time have kept me away since 2016; and knowing what I now know, I think this will probably be for good. The place has lost one of its longest regular users. Moreover, if this is a demonstration of the frame of mind the University itself has adopted, then perhaps it may also return my degrees and revoke my alumnus membership. read more

Bros and short shorts... Seriously though, a great gym to work out at. Lots of different machines to get your cardio on, but if you are wanting to run hit up the track! The downstairs area is nice with lots of machines and weights and all that good stuff. Don't let the meat heads intimidate you. Also check out some of the group classes! If you havent heard a 19year old male who i went to high school with drowned at this facility. I am a lifeguard and swam competitively for 13 years, i will never swim here!! I will never go swimming here, and recommend others do the same until they fix their inattentive lifeguards. Their lifeguards are rarely paying attention to the water and have sweatpants and sweatshirts on. Some have books in their laps and are listening to ipods. Being a lifeguard, i know it gets really boring just looking at the water. but this situation shows that anything can go wrong. how can a male who is a damn good swimmer drown in a pool with just him an his roommate in it? Inattentive lifeguards that is why, and this disgusts me! they have one job to do and its easy as hell when nothing goes wrong, but they need to be paying attention and wait to do their homework and listen to music when they are NOT working. read more

Pretty basic for a Division One Men's Basketball Team. But its pretty intimate feeling with the student sections on each hoop. Also new score boards and video screens were added which is a plus. read more

I love the Klotche Center. Everything is nice and clean and the staff are all helpful and welcoming. The pool is great for lab swimming, just be aware of the hours because the pool closes regularly for swim practice. The cardio room is fantastic and cleaned nicely. I love this gym and feel so lucky to have it right on campus! read more

Sadly they don't have a raised platform for powerlifting unless you're on an athletic team. Otherwise it isn't too bad. Depending on the time of day you go you may not be able to easily use the equipment. read more

really decent gym that's free to UWM students. facilities are clean and equipment is newer. there are a few b-ball courts, racketball courts, a weight room and a cardio room. if you're a student, there's no reason you shouldn't check out the Klotsche Center at least once. read more
