I brought in my vintage wedding set for sizing (that was a huge mess because of 2 different previous jewelers). I really didn't think it could be fixed but I was wrong. This was my grandmother's originally and is nearly 70 years old. The prongs were blobs of gold barely holding in the diamonds, the rings were soldered together crooked & it was slightly too small. I can't overstate how PERFECT my wedding set came back. The jeweler made them look literally brand new. I'm blown away by the excellence of the work done on them. He also sized my newer engagement ring after another jeweler had sized it way too big. It also looks brand new again. I want to mention that all 3 shanks on these rings have a lot more gold than when I brought them. That is something that I have *never* had happen w/ other jewelers before. The price for all 3 rings was around $260. I paid almost $200 to get my newer engagement ring sized ONLY (and it was the wrong size!) by a different jeweler in Grass Valley who shall not be named but beware of the "S" jeweler in GV. I had a quote to fix only the prongs on the vintage set & it was $75 per crown, which would have been $600. I wasn't even charged separately for the prong repair by Utopian Stone. Also, Diane (co owner) and I talked for a long time while she checked out a ring I wanted looked at, and she showed me all kinds of great stones and jewelry. We had a great time & I really enjoyed our convo. They are the best in Nevada County hands down. I will never go anywhere else. Thank you for fixing my rings! I haven't been able to wear the wedding set for over 10 years, and I'm thrilled. I cannot say enough about the quality of this work. I will be back!! read more

Thank you, all of you are wonderful. I went in today because i needed to have my wedding ring fixed (an inlay was chipped); my husband of 38 years died last November and i still have panic attacks and crying jags. They are fixing my ring and (after looking at a LOT of rings), found a substitute to wear until my ring is fixed. read more

Utopian Stone - Jewelry Near Me - Nevada City, California

My husband and I went into the shop to have a ring resized and they were horribly rude to us and said no, simply because they didn't "need that sort of business." They wouldn't even offer an alternative, they just stared at us rudely until we awkwardly turned around to leave. Later I find out, the owners are Trump supporters, and then it all come together since my husband openly wears a rainbow band on his wrist showing support. read more

We travel to Nevada City as part of our 30th wedding anniversary and had done some research and found Utopia Stone as a likely place to have new wedding rings designed and made. Their website had examples of exactly what we were looking for. When we entered the shop on 10/18/2023 a small dog began to wander out the door, not knowing the dog I was hesitant to touch it and or forcibly push it back into the shop. I was concerned I would startle the animal and it could bite me, so I let the female employee behind the counter know the dog had wandered out. She immediately became agitated with me and accused me of letting what she described as a blind, deaf dog out of the shop. She was incredibly rude and rather than thank me, she accused me of negligence for her dog. I was honestly taken aback by her behavior, if the dog was that important and feeble I would have thought she would have given it more attention. Needless to say we didn't stay another moment in the shop nor spend our money there, our visit to Nevada City had been incredible and she didn't represent the other people we met there. We did find a place that designed our new rings in Reno and we happily spent 5k on the new rings. Our takeaway is don't shop here, you might not respond properly to a blind deaf dog escaping and I would also guess losing a sale is more important than being nice at Utopia Stone. read more

I am so incredibly glad I chose this store! I called and asked if they would custom make my engagement ring (hammered gold band with a lab grown diamond). and it only took them about two weeks, they were so friendly and I was blown away by how affordable it was given that it's custom and my diamond was on the larger side. They went over all the design details with me to make sure it would be perfect, and they were able to do it all over phone. looking at my ring everyday makes me feel special in a way that I have never felt before, and a lot of that is thanks to Utopian Stone. I will be going here for my fiancé's wedding ring and all maintenance through the years. read more

Was disappointed when I took my broken clasp to be repaired that it was not given back to me. Owners stated they can't find it and gave me $5 to cover the cost. I could have gotten it totally exchanged by the company that made the necklace for me, and now I can't. When called to ask for clasp back, owners stated "I don't know why you want it back?' So rude and not how you should talk to future clients. Go to Stuckis instead. Much nicer and more selection read more

I was in search of something special for our granddaughter's 18th birthday. Both owners/designers were there to help me. I got something very special made from the gold quartz mined at the 16 to 1 Mine. So very beautiful, historic from our own area, and gorgeously wrapped - it was a joy to give to our granddaughter. She loved it! read more

Two unsatisfactory previous experiences, overpriced cheap looking ring I returned and never got a fully realized credit, and in a second experience was charged a higher than expected cost for simple clasp replacement; they kept my gold clasp and never seemed to factor that in. The third strike today: they acted as though a minor soldering of a broken rope chain around a gold coin was major surgery--six weeks out. I will never set foot in this store again. A busy time of year I grant you, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt up to now. They overcharge and need to realize customers matter and are not as naive as they obviously think. read more

Saw that there was only 1 review, one about a bad experience. SO i had to jump in and say that i had the exact opposite experience. 4 different times. 1 - Wife's wedding/engagement ring. She didn't want or need 2 rings, just 1 perfect ring. We are active and wanted something she could always wear. Came in with an idea and did some sketching back and forth and BOOM - PERFECTION. 2 - my wedding ring, started with a small sketch i sent over the the guys and once again wear my ring daily and receive compliments and questions on it all the time. 3 - birthday gift for my wife on our honeymoon. I had an idea on some earrings, which they hustled and got done for me in time for our honeymoon and my wife's 30th bday, they were cast with my wedding ring which made them even that much more special. Cicada gets the thanks for these. 4 - A one year anniversary pendant, Cicada outdid herself, I had the theme our our sketched out drawings as a play off of my wife's ring continued and all 4 pieces of jewelry match and are completely custom. Bottom line, UTOPIAN STONE WILL HAVE MY BUSINESS FOR LIFE, they will also get referrals from me and anyone that has seen our pieces forever! Pat, Marc, Cicada and Scott, Thank you all for really creating these special pieces and always saying hey and cleaning our stuff up when we're in town! In the end, an engagement should be a surprise, you shouldn't need need to show 8 people a sketch for it to happen. read more

Do not trust this shop with your valuable jewelry. I took my $10,000. gold nugget in for a clasp repair and they ground off much of the valuable quartz from it either because they have become INCOMPETENT, CARELESS, OR LAZY. BEWARE OF THIS JEWERY SHOP THEY CAN NOT BE TRUSTED! read more

I would like to share my incredible story about my experience at Utopian Stone. After an extremely emotional week, I stopped in to have a broken chain repaired that carries my son's ashes in a pendant. Even though they had a huge backlog of work, Denise offered to fix it for me that day. I was so overwhelmed with joy that I started to cry. Denise also offered a much needed hug. Now that's what I call excellent service! Thank you again, Denise, and Utopian Stone! read more

We live in the Bay Area. My husband and I often take day trips up to Nevada City and we have always admired this jeweler. A few years ago, before Covid, my 25 year old engagement ring was literally starting to fall apart. The quote for redoing a new ring here in Oakland using my diamonds and gold was really high and way more than we wanted to spend. We decided to try this jeweler. Not only was the price half of what the jeweler in Oakland wanted to charge, they made me a brand new custom ring using my gold and diamonds. The new ring is just beautiful. I get so many compliments. We are very pleased. About six months later, I took a really bad fall in the street in San Francisco and badly bent a prong on the center diamond. We took the ring back to them and they fixed it for me while we waited, free of charge. We are very happy with their services. read more

This shop is fantastic as is their staff. They have a gorgeous selection of jewelry they make in house, as well as stuff they resale. They have a lot of gold country antiques as well so it is a fun shop to peruse. Scott helped me fix a ring that my girlfriend stepped on. He did a great job and is very appreciated read more

They need a serious reality check. Firstly, I have been told the owner is a nice person and I believe I did meet him and yes he was pleasant to deal with. However, my in-laws decided to use this place for custom wedding rings for myself and my husband. My father in-law was giving my husband his ring and it needed to be resized and guess what? IT WAS "STOLEN" OUT OF THE SHOP. **They claim they have no video cameras or footage of the crime. Where was the ring being kept, is my question? It was stolen long after it was dropped off to be resized so does that mean the thief went into the back? It wouldn't have been kept in a display case, it wasn't for sale. WTF! Most people who know about this incident speculate the shop "lost" it. Lost/stole an heirloom from a family giving them business. Did they apologize incessantly, beg forgiveness and replace the ring no question? Ha ha, no. No, they in fact did replace the ring with less gold than the original contained (it was a substantially sized and weighted ring) and they charged an arm and a leg for my ring which was modeled from a well-known designer ring. My in-laws should have just bought the ring from the designer, it would have been "brand-name" and cheaper! Who even knows about the quality of the diamonds they put in it at this point, they feel like thieves to me. A year after the incident, I went to the store personally to have my rings re-sized, and I just wanted to see the place in person. The son of the owner was curt with me, wanting to give me very little time at all even though nobody was in the shop at the time and I explained that these rings came from their shop. I asked for a complimentary resizing as anyone knows a jeweler gives to you if he's made the rings and he refused. He did lower the asking price for resizing which was originally $40. Insane. Never again. Never, ever, ever again. read more

This is the best jewelry store in Nevada County! They are kind, helpful, skilled and trustworthy! You can trust them 100% with your diamonds and fine stones. I had a family ring that needed an entire new setting and they were able too match the existing setting exactly by sending it to a specialized jewelry in Oregon that matched the setting with a 3-D machine made for matching settings. It is beautiful! In addition they even stayed open 10 minutes late one evening to wait for me when I called to see if they were open to clean my rings. Diane was so friendly and said, "Yes, we do close at 5:30 but come on in." read more

Mark hooked us up with a fantastic engagement ring. He made great suggestions to our thoughts and we couldn't be happier with the final product. The estimate he gave was spot on and the work was completed within the timeline he gave. Horrible attitude, and service, owner and clerk are very rude. I do not recommend going unless you want to be talked down to.

If I could give them zero stars I would. They did a horrible re sizing his wedding ring it was visibly marred.when questioned about the poor quality of their craftsmanship they threw our change and receipt in our face and asked us to leave.... And we WILL NEVER return... read more

Gorgeous store with a wonderful antique feel. Wonderful customer service. Loved the quartz with gold...not sure of the official name.

I had a sentimental antique aquamarine ring that needed a shank repair. I took it to several jewelers for estimates that were hundreds of dollars beyond my budget. All of them suggested I bring in old gold to use toward my repair. Utopian Stone is a one of a kind shop, the artists are on site and Diane at the front desk listened carefully and never tried to sell me a different design or another setting unlike the other shops I visited. Utopian Stone repaired my ring with detailed artistry and I couldn't be more pleased. I used several gold rings from X's and purged my past. The craziest part was that the total bill was $24.00. Who knew custom jewelry repair could be this affordable? Thank you Diane at Utopian and the incredible artist who crafted the repair! This is a Gem of a shop, not to mention all of the unique Gold Quartz pieces worth viewing ! read more

I am choosing 2 stars because they get a few points for the beautiful diamond earrings we have purchased from them. We have bought 2 sets, and a ring over the last decade totaling thousands of dollars, and I absolutely love my earrings and ring. I only gave them 2 stars because I wear my earrings everyday, and recently went in to see if there were other options for the backs that would hold my earrings on safer. One time I had one shoot across the room when my finger clipped ear lobe putting my hair up. So, I was hopeful there would be a safer solution. When we went into to speak with the lady behind the counter (my husband said she was the owner), we were all very taken back by how rude she was communicating with us. Perhaps it was because we weren't there to buy new diamonds this time. Perhaps she had had a bad day. But either which way, the woman was outright rude enough for us to leave without a resolution and we will not be buying any jewelry there in the future. I hope this sits as a reminder that one bad customer service relationship can serve as a loss of a customer who has ultimately supported this business with several expensive purchases. I like to think it's more then business I'm buying, I like to to buy business that serves with kindness, and integrity, not a nasty attitude who acts irritated by our presence and questions. That was not a pleasant visit. We will not return. read more

Well, the store owner is a very nice and accommodating person. He entertained our request for my fiancé's wedding ring but alas, when the deadline came for the sketch to be presented to us, it also past. We waited a good week and a half before receiving a call that the sketch was finished, even though Utopian Stone knew that both my fiancé's and my's folks were in town (and left, never seeing the sketch). When We finally went into the shop to review the sketch, we were informed that it still hadn't been done and there was maybe a look-a-like. This piece was nice but didn't fit our taste and the owner's son sure did let us know the we were welcome to leave his store and find another to make our ring. Just the energy that we wanted put into the precious symbol of our matrimony! Their store has a great corner of the street location and is decorated inside pretty nicely but when it comes to the attitude and helpfulness of the owners, we Are happy to take our business elsewhere! Thanks but No thanks! read more

Art is very subjective and much more than pricing plays a role when deciding on such large purchases that will last a lifetime. The quality and integrity of the staff will surpass any other gallery in and out of the area. Utopian Stone creates an overall exceptional experience when buying and servicing their creations. Plus with over 35 years of local and loyal service to Nevada County you can trust that they will be there to service all your future needs. I first bought from Utopian Stone as a tourist over 20 years ago. After moving to Nevada County, i broke a bracelet they had made and took it in for repairs. No charge, even thought they had to replace a gold nugget. Over the years I have acquired a few unique designer pieces. Yes, they are pricey, but they are top quality original, one of a kind. I would rather wait until I can afford a Utopian Stone creation than buy something cheaper in a chain store. The quality and design speaks volumes. read more

I would like to talk about the review dated 9-11-2015 , first off it was the 60th anniversary of the U2 spy plane in service and it was being held at Beale AFB just down the road, we sell pendants of the U2 and the pilots buy them for their wives, we had 3 retired Pilots and their wives in their late 70s of age in the store. This couple that wrote the review came into the store smelling very strong of both fresh and just smoked marijuana , (it happens from time to time ) said they were there to pick up his ring that had been sized down , ( it was to big prior to coming in to fit him ) he tried it on and it fit perfectly , he noticed a very slight seam where it had been cut, the ring was platinum, ( it likes to undercut when being polished and can leave a little line, it does not affect the durability in any way and after a few days of being worn the line will be invisible to the eye.) the customer questioned the seam and it was explained that it was the best it could be, he stood silent then started cussing profanity ( remember we had war vets in our store standing right next to this guy ) about how we cut his ring and that the sanctity of his marriage was now ruined ? WTF, ( to size a ring it has to be cut , if smaller a piece of metal removed , if bigger a piece is put in , everybody knows this ( except for this guy ) oh yea he was stoned off his ass! Upon his profanity in the store in front of these 3retired war vets ( and their wives ) his change was thrown at him and he was told to leave, his wife the review writer came back in a few minutes later and apologized for her husband and the owner also apologized for throwing the change ( 2-3 20$ bills ) . If the customer had not started cussing this whole situation could have been handled much more civilly . Have some respect for your elders , the vets and their wives that help provide us all with our freedom. Thanks for listing to our side of a bad review . There are always 2sides to a story. read more
