We came back for my youngest son's 1st haircut and they are just as amazing as they were 6 years ago! Ray (the owner) cut my kid's hair and it was not easy! He struggled a bit with a lot of crying, but eventually started to settle once the cut was done. All to say that Ray was really patient and did a great job with Benji's first cut. Came here to get my son's haircut (17 month old) as new customers. My wife and I decided to choose Ray and waited until he was available. Ray was very friendly but did not take his time with our son at all. When 2 more customers came in for him, he rushed our son's haircut and did a terrible job. He butchered his right back side, which is completely uneven with the left (displayed in picture). When we asked for him to fix it, he kept saying that it was good. My son and I have been going to Utopia Barbershop for about 6 years. As of May 2023, the current barbers are: Ray (owner), Meny (2nd chair), Gregory (3rd chair with glasses), and Jacob (4th chair). I've received a haircut from all of them and they're all great barbers. Something that I noticed was that in many of the negative 1-star reviews, the barber mentioned is no longer working at Utopia Barbershop. I guess word gets around and crappy barbers don't last. To be honest, a while ago there was a barber here named Rob that really butchered my hair, I mean, it looked like a got into a fight with a lawnmower and lost. I was hesitant to return here because who wants to go to a barber, have "haircut remorse," then go to another barbershop to "fix" the haircut? I just didn't allow Rob into my Circle of Trust. Needless to say, Rob is no longer employed here. Anyone other than Ray/Meny/Gregory/Jacob will need to prove themselves (again, Circle of Trust). Ray's family is in the barbershop business. It's a family tradition and at the end of the day Ray wants to make sure his customers are happy. I forgot to mention that many of his customers are children. The barbershop has bright colors, miniature barber chairs disguised as vehicles, and tablets to keep children engaged. The barbers are patient, know how to work fast, and are skilled with working with children with special needs (autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, sensory integration issues, etc.). I noticed that Meny and Gregory do most of the children's haircuts. To quote The Big Lebowski, this barbershop don't roll on Shabbos (they're closed on Saturday for their day of rest). Their busiest day is probably Sunday. At this time, the cost of a haircut is about $25 for an adult haircut and $23 for a kids haircut. The pandemic has driven up the price of haircuts (I don't think the cost of a haircut in New York City will ever drop below $20 again, but I'm OK with this because who wants to have a grizzly, Beatles mop top haircut? Remember when we were cutting our own hair during peak COVID in 2020? Yeah... not doing that again.). The prices of haircuts here sometimes fluctuates, I've seen it gone up to $28 and dip down to $23. Don't forget to tip your barber! read more

I took my father here for the Cadillac treatment. He got a shave, haircut, and nose/ear trim for $45. The guys were helpful and careful around his injury. They were friendly, efficient and catered to his needs. He looked brand new and most importantly was happy. He said he'd like to come back. Dignity matters. Took my son for just first haircut this morning. We had Ray- and the experience was nothing short of incredible. I was a bit nervous to take my two year old- I was worried he would scream and cry and it would be a terrible experience for him. However, this was the exact opposite. He sat on my lap and let Ray cut his hair with such patience. The little shop is so cute, they have tons of kid car chairs, and they specialize in toddler haircuts and children with special needs. I've come here twice so far to get my haircut and both experiences have been awesome. Both times I got my haircut by Ray who is very friendly and efficient. By the second time I came, he already knew my "usual" cut. The most important thing for me at the barber is the quality of the fade and Ray does it perfectly and quickly! He listens to exactly how I like my hair cut and then surprises me by making it even better than I could've imagined. I brought my son to Utopia barbershop because I've been looking for a barber who has experience with kids on the spectrum. Haven't had a lot of success with barbershops within the last year. At times he moves (led to cuts) or cries bc he's uncomfortable of the noise surroundings. This past weekend we came here and right of the bat my son didn't cry or felt nervous. He visualized the kid seatings, toys and cartoon figures on wall. Gave him time to look at his surroundings before I told him to choose a seat. He picked it without any issue and for the first time EVER allowed the barber (Gregory) to put on a hair cutting apron/cape. That's when I knew he was comfortable. From beginning to end no cries or yelling. Me and my wife were extremely happy. His haircut came out great. I thank Gregory for using low sounding clippers. That's was really helpful. Decided to try this spot today. It wasn't busy considering it was 1pm Monday, I didn't expect it to be. The place looks very family/kid oriented. My barber was Ella or Eva. (Can't remember exactly) It wasn't a great experience, it also was not a bad experience. She was rushing through the entire process. I would sort of understood if there were other people waiting but... No one else was waiting lol. Toward the end she used the razor to touch up my edges. Then she applied alcohol to the back of my neck. She used the razor again to make more touch ups. She then used the hair dryer to clean me off. I noticed she didn't wipe me down with the alcohol on the sides or where she touched me up a 2nd time. (Disappointed) I didn't mention anything. For me a barber is a personal thing. It's like going to a fancy sushi spot omakase style. where the chef/cook personally makes food for you and makes the next thing based on your reaction. Or getting a custom suit made. Where you work directly with the tailor/sales rep picking out all the details. Getting a haircut is very personal. I'd have to live with this cut for the next few weeks or just chop it off. LoL she could of taken a little more time and tried to make the experience worth it. This spot failed with customer service. My cut came out just fine. Had to run home and dab alcohol but not a huge deal. I probably won't be back. If you have kids, I'm sure this spot is more for them. The staff were friendly but clearly couldn't cut any of the hairstyles that were shown in the portfolios. Seems more like a place for little kids than anyone else. I asked for a fade and tried to communicate with the barber to blend it a bit more but insisted it was good. Their clippers and razors also felt very worn out and poorly maintained. Honestly would never consider going back. Response to owner: 1. I came in asking for a fade and even provided a reference photo just incase. If anything, this "fade" was NOT what I had asked for or anything like the reference photo. 2. Yes, I'm complaining about the equipment because I was scratched up on both sides. Awesome customer service experience all around. They go out of their way to make customers feel more welcome and more appreciated than any service business that I've been to in a very long time. The day I went I was greeted by all 3 people who were on staff. Jacob is the barber who cut my hair. He asked repeatedly how I wanted my hair cut, finding out exactly how I prefer it ( simple buzz/flat-top). Constant conversation, asking and answering questions, exchanging stories with me and I'm not a big talker lol. Jacob made sure I was 100% satisfied. When finished, he introduced me to the two other barbers who spent some time talking with me. All 3 seem to be extremely nice (and funny) guys. The prices are the same as the other barbershops in area which is high everywhere in Whitestone/Bayside. Because they cut hair exceptionally well, provide a positive experience and make it obvious that they appreciate your business, I strongly recommend giving them a try. My sons and I have been coming to this barbershop since April of 2017. They are professional and personable, from beginning to end - it's great! Both my sons hated scissors and especially buzzers, when they were 4 and 1. But from the very beginning, the crew (Manny and Ray) knew how to calm them with tablets, musics and those amazing theme chairs. They were understanding of the kid's fear, so slowed down and guided us, the parents in a comforting tone. Even though my boys are 9 and 6 now, they still enjoy their stylist haircuts each and every time. As for me, my go to guy is Greg - he's awesome! I always have fear of switching barber. But when I started with him, from the very first cut to now - Greg has been very consistent with all his fades and clean cuts, making me feel a bit younger with each haircut.
