The post office is past the railroad tracks, but we tooled around to check out the library, the caboose, the historic cannon, the farm house, Halligan Park and the sprawling Victorian home. But of course for me, the post office was the main attraction! Rachel, the clerk running the show was extremely pleasant and welcoming! She gave me some history of the village, telling me that there used to be a general store with a post office here! It has since burned down, but she had some vintage photos of the previous post office on the wall (see photos). She had a huge binder of collectible stamps, and I purchased about $100 worth! So many fun stamps! Even a jeopardy sheet with Alex trebeck and actual answers! I wanted some post cards too, but they were out so next time for sure! There's still some life here though, it holds many historical sites such as the Gholson Bridge and Fort Christanna. The "downtown" historic area on Main Street is undergoing several facelift projects and hopefully will add to the value of this small town, once bustling with tobacco and cotton industries. The town sponsors several events throughout the year, seasonal parades and celebrations, Brunswick Stew festival, and Farmer's Market days. With all the historically preserved architectural buildings here, you'd expect to find a quaint old fashioned post office. Maybe at one time there was such a building, but now the post office is a squatty long brick building with little curb appeal. This building in low! The windows are touching the roof. It's certainly not an attractive government facility, but it gets the job done! The hours are 8:30-5:00 M-F, 9:30-11:00 Sat. They have regular mail services, P.O. Boxes, money order services, but no passport service at this location. It was pretty clean and well-stocked with shipping supplies. There was also a greeting card and stationery rack. Like many of these small town post offices, it could use an update!

You can tell the postmaster here cares about his post office! There's a lot of TLC in this government building. It was cheerfully decorated with red, white and blue buntings, flowers, a desk and chair is provided for convenience, and information about the town's events are posted on the bulletin board. The outside isn't much to write home about, but there's ample partaking and handicap accessible. Burkeville is named for Samuel Burke (1794-1880) a member of Virginia House of Delegates, and a store and tavern owner where the original post office was located. There's a historic tavern named for him as well that was built in 1827. The hours are M-F 9 to 12, 1-4:30 and Saturday 9-12. No passport service.

Built in 1940, its imposing brick facade, arched entryway with an eagle relief, reproduction vintage lampposts, and notable weathervane make for an striking effect. Inside, you can still see the antique brass post boxes and marble walls. Although I love the vintage feel of this post office, it could definitely use updated flooring and valances. It seemed a tad dingy in there. This post office serves about 7,200 residents in the Blackstone community. There's a ramp for easy access and plenty of parking. They are open for retail M-F 9:00-5:00, and Saturday 9:00-11:00, with the lobby open 24/7. The usual services are offered, however, no passport service. This one in Warfield, (which used to be a railroad town but has since seen a decrease in population which according to statistics from 2024 is now 34) has vintage brass post offices boxes and is neat as a pin!
