When I spoke to the manager Chelsea on the phone, she told me that nothing could be done, no one could make them wear masks and non-masked people could not be separated from the public and then it was, "if you're that scared, then stay home." I had already explained I usually print postage online but had no option today. No concern that 150,000 Americans are dead and the post office lobby was full of seniors today. No concern for public or employee health. Just attitude.

And it has a cool little historic district with small businesses, antique shops, restaurants, and coffee shops, as well as a thriving art and theatre scene. Despite its large size, the employees here aren't very friendly. Lisa was the clerk and she was abrupt and impersonal. I purchased some cards from the greeting card kiosk along with some stamps with nary a thank you or smile. I also went to the Visitor Center down the street and bought some postcards to mail. (By the way, the lady in the visitors center was so helpful and sweet!) I found out that the first post office here was established in 1792 and used to be in the basement of the Federal Building. It is so small that if you blink you'll miss it as you drive through the curvy roads. My family has had a post office box here for 20+ years and have always had a wonderful experience. The postmaster, Becky and all of the employees over the years have always been the nicest & easiest people to have behind the counter. They make your business. We're on a roadtrip for 3 and somewhat weeks, visiting from The Netherlands. And of course, again, I bought too much Christmas ornaments. - Little note, on every trip I try to buy some local ornaments so when Christmas arrives I can look at a tree full of memories. - This time a Departement 56 Harley Davidsons motel. And that are not things to get in our already overweight luggage easily. So we considered sending it home. We first made inquiries at FedEx in Nashville because we walked by. Estimated costs: over $200. For that price I a can buy an extra suitcase and pay for extra luggage. So we looked further. In Gatlinburg we visited this post office learning that our package can be send to Europe for a little over $50, including our map and two travelguides we didn't need anymore. Huge difference. But that's not the only reason for the 5 star rating. The guy behind the counter is. He took all the time in the world helping us to fill in the forms, get the stuff boxed, and giving advice about some choices to made. In the mean time he helped several other local customers with quick questions without giving us the feeling he wasn't totally there for us. And in the post office hangs a painting depicting him and a little boy. Make sure to ask him about it. It has to do with 9/11 and I had trouble keeping my eyes dry. And no worries, he wasn't pushy, I asked him about the painting and that made him tell the story. And excuse any grammar and spelling mistakes. English is not my first language. And if that isn't bad enough, my Apple device keeps changing words into 'proper Dutch'. Yes, you've guessed right, my first language.
