We came by on a Saturday and nearly all the businesses along Main were closed, some were vacant, others seemingly abandoned. The post office though serves the community with a rather large building and plenty of parking. Open Monday-Friday 8:30-12:30, 1:30-5:00. Saturday 10:00-12:00. No passport service here, but M.O., greeting cards and burial flags are offered.

This government building was constructed in 1941 and houses a beautiful mural entitled "Captain John Smith Trading with the Indians" by William Abbot Cheever part of the New Deal mural art series. Various murals are featured in many post offices around the country commissioned by the Department of Treasury. There are about 1,400 of these murals painted between 1934-1943. The New Deal art project was developed to help artists out of the Great Depression and similar murals can be found at schools, libraries courthouses and other public buildings. It warms my heart to know that Smithfield is a community that preserves its historical charm and serves the public. But, because the mail service is sometimes unreliable, I had to deduct a star, which pained me because I love this area and this post office! Sophia usually handled that arena by mostly ordering online, but we were running short so I was given the task to pick some up. It was right after I got off work so I stopped by on the way home. Foot traffic was very minimal which resulted in no wait at all. I actually stood in line for no longer than 15 seconds. As stated earlier, it was for buying a book of stamps. To my surprise, the cost for the book was over $14. Back when I used to ship items off by mail, stamps cost under $10. It's crazy to see the prices go up each year. Unfortunately, we have to accept the changes and move on. Besides the price increase, the transaction went smooth as usual. I know this location will always come in handy for yours truly.
