Great group of volunteer firefighters. They have supported my community ever since moving her in 2001. They always appear to be friendly, professional, and care about what they are doing. read more

The paramedics were instrumental in ssving my Mother's life and made her feel cared for as they administered care. They were kind, knowledgeable and very personable. We never felt as if they were in a rush even though they worked quickly. Their demeanor and tone were so respectful. She said that those young men are wonderful when the crisis abated. Hats off to the men of Camelot Fire Station #9. Thank you for your service.

The squad has a long and glorious history, having been started in the late 1940's as one of only two squads in the entire city. Their current squad house on Shore Drive a little west of the Lesner Bridge was built in the early 1950's, and has served the squad, and the entire northern part of Va Beach, since then. With fundraisers, and income from rental property located directly adjacent to the squad house, the Squad has been able to purchase and maintain some of the most advanced equipment of any of the Beach squads. Additionally, their water rescue capabilities have become quite refined over the years; they currently operate three Zodiac inflatables, and are able to tackle just about any water rescue operation short of the open ocean. Other Beach squads are certainly larger, and a few have lifesaving equipment on par with Ocean Park. But none have the same spirit and can-do attitude found in this all-volunteer Squad. Truly as good as it gets.

The Sgt. Miles James marker was erected in the shrubbery at the nearest spot to Princess Anne Road,…read morea short distance from its intersection with North Landing Road. It's not an easy marker to get close to, or even read. One has to pull in at the adjacent parking lot to get a good look. The State Highway Marker was erected and dedicated in late 2019 by the Virginia Beach Historic Preservation Commission. Miles James enlisted on October 28, 1863 in Portsmouth, VA with the rank of Corporal in the 36th Regiment Company B of the United States Colored Infantry. James's regiment saw heavy action at the Virginia Battle of New Market Heights, one of the outer defenses of Richmond. They fought against the Texas Brigade of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. During the fighting Corporal James's arm was mangled and had to be field amputated. Regardless of his injury he continued to lead his men. James was promoted to 1st Sergeant and earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in the battle. In addition the Army created a special unofficial medal as a tribute to the gallantry of the African American soldiers who fought with the Union Army in the Battle of New Market Heights. James was born into slavery in Princess Anne County. Following the war he returned to live in Norfolk. The 1870 Norfolk Census shows him living in Ward 3 with his wife Sarah and three children. He was 43 years old and working as a shoemaker. Sadly he died August 28, 1871 of complications from his injury and is buried in the Sgt. March Corprew Family Cemetery. The Cemetery, located in what is now Chesapeake, VA, serves as a memorial for Unknown & Known Afro-Union Civil War Veterans.,

With a 24/7 operation, ODUPD's response time to campus is astounding, considering the office is only about a block away, and officers patrolling the area regularly. There are phones located throughout the campus with a direct line to the department - don't play around to just "see" if it works - these guys will arrive and actually respond within a minute... Some of the services worth noting are the Bicycle Registration program (great if you're a student and rely on your bicycle to get around, if it gets stolen, police have a better chance of finding it for you), SAFE RIDE program, Party Registration for those off campus parties, PA program (patrol aides to assist students and visitors on campus) and also Safety Escorts amongst other services. They're an awesome, friendly and approachable team and are extremely supportive. They collaborate on the daily with students, faculty and staff, and strive to provide the highest level of service. Can't fault them.
