No signage on where to stand, but you get scolded if you stand in the wrong place, or use the wrong type of tape on your packages. Go to a different usps. This post office is actually solid. A friendly employee unlocked their door and warmly welcomed me in promptly at the 9 AM opening time. I had come to retrieve a package, and the clerk was ready to efficiently and professionally provide the important and valuable parcel to me without any hassle. They carry a full line of boxes and packing supplies, which is handy. Conveniently located near the Eastern Market Metro and Trader Joe's. DC had issues with mail delivery reliability early in the pandemic, but this post office and the mail carriers are back on their game now. We arrived at 2:57pm on 7/19 for passport services for our toddler. We came during the passport walk in hour (3-4) - see my check in photo I posted. There were two families in front of us and we waited 30 mins to be seen. When we got to the desk we realized we had everything except the birth certificate and copy, so we rushed home with our toddler, grabbed it, came back and got back in line at 3:55 and waited in line again, but would not see us. She saw us and said "passports are done."" I said, "the website says until 4" she said "passports are done" and waved at us to leave. I said, "respectfully, we waited the whole time, ran home, and it's not 4 yet." She said "well you didn't tell me that! And, passports take 15 minutes, so they're done. Make an appointment." I said, "if it closes at 4, then the last passport would be at 4, and it's not 4 yet." She said "PASSPORTS ARE DONE! You can make an appointment or come back Tuesday." I said, "May I please get your name so I can follow up?" And she said "Miss Yvette. And when you say something, you tell them it's 3:57!!!! 3:57!!!!!!!" I said "I am aware of what time it is, it is not 4 yet" and we walked out. I made a formal complaint at usps.com and we made an appointment at another location. So frustrating. You can only make appointments within a very specific window and both parents need to be there (or significant further documentation). I agree with Steven S. They don't answer their phone!! 202 636 1259 and 800 222 1811. I mailed a package on Sept. 2, 2025, priority. According to tracking it landed at this Post office 9/4/25 for pick up. It was suppose to go to a PO box at another zip code. The reason it's at the wrong zip is bc the clerk at the sending PO changed the zip code. He said mine didn't match the Po box #. Well my recipient said I had the correct zip. The machine could not confirm the match, so zip got changed. Today is 10/17/25 and the package is still circling around in Wash., according to tracking. I'm on my 2nd case # and no one has call me as promised, only automated messages/call answering. Someone just recently pushed a button and sent me a message that takes everything back to, " your package is on its way". I'm thinking,to where? I thought we were beyond that, and working on return to sender. I'd give USPS a zero rating, if possible. read more

It's not good. As consumers, we have gone from buying in stores to buying things online. Over the past few years, online shopping has taken over and increased our reliance on shippers and post offices in order for us to get our goods. Most of the time, these things just work. When it comes to shipping items ourselves (returning items, mailing things to friends, etc) we have to go in to an establishment like the post office. Enter the USPS location on Penn Ave near Eastern Market. This establishment exemplifies the exact opposite of customer service. Here is just a list of things I've noticed over the past 2 years of using this post office: - There's always a line - Service is slow - Employees are rude - PO Box mail takes a few extra days to actually get into your hands from when it's delivered - There is a lack of signage - Folks get yelled at I never leave this place saying "Gee that was a really good time". I almost try to just block out the memories. I've had an employee tell me that she likes to yell at customers for fun, because she "knows them" and that makes it okay. What sort of an example are you trying to set? Do you just enjoy yelling at people? Are you that miserable?! There's also people who just sit in the post office so that they can join in on the heckling of customers. Listen, hanging out with people at a store because you are friends with them is one thing - but you don't get to just laugh at people. Most of the time the customers who come into this store are clueless because there is no signage explaining any sort of system, and the USPS does not do a good job of informing the public about what you should/should not do when mailing a package. It's called empathy people...EMBRACE IT! So yeah, don't come here. Don't get a PO Box. Try to buy boxes or reuse boxes from your home and print labels online if you can- that way you don't have to wait in the stupidly long lines or interact with the employees who are likely going to be rude to you or just ignore you. Don't buy stamps here, they're likely out of the ones you want. Instead, buy them online and save yourself time because you won't find a place to park here and you'll have to wait at least 10 minutes in line. It's really sad that because the post office is such a necessity, they can really run it horribly and get away with it because it's good enough. This is an embarrassment to the United States and should seriously be improved. read more

They do not answer their telephone. I was directed to get in touch with this office by the USPIS to report instances of package theft. The contact number given was 202-363-1259. I have video evidence, as well as the name and address of the individual who took the packages. But if we're unable to report such incidents, it's hard to see how we can stop them from happening again. It's crucial that government bodies step up, take accountability, and ensure their staff are properly managed. read more

I ship items with USPS almost on a daily basis. This is by far the worst USPS I have ever been to. I live in Capitol Hill and unfortunately must go here frequently to mail items. The workers are always horrendously rude. They purposefully make things difficult for customers and fail to offer any insightful help or assistance when shipping items. On many occasions, I have seen workers be intentionally rude to customers and speak down to them, calling them hateful names and speaking about them to other staff members. USPS needs to investigate this location, whether it is a management issue or needs an overall revamp of its staff. So I went to this post office recently. Except for usually long lines, I had no problems with previous service. This was a horrible exception. I needed to mail a calendar to someone (a larger piece of very flat mail but not a package). I expected it to cost more than a big letter but less than a package. Usually when the USPS weighs my parcel they show me the options before they charge me. I saw on the screen that the cheapest options were $4.31 for first class mail (4 day delivery) or $7.95 for Express delivery (3 day). I told the agent that I wanted the cheapest option ($4.31). She then informed me that I was being charged $7.95. I said I saw a $4.31 option. She told me that some people may get $4.31, but my cost is $7.95. I figure that she had already punched in the $7.95 option and put the sticker on my parcel and didn't want to redo it. As customer service goes, how is this possibly okay? read more

Comically bad customer service here. They yell at you for everything. They'll scream at you to use the drop box, then they'll scream at you that the drop box is full and you need to put the box on the counter, then (in the same visit!) they'll scream at you to use the drop box and not the counter. Even when you use the self service machines to avoid human interaction, you'll get yelled at. They don't even mention the survey on the receipt because they know they will get zero stars. read more

Stopped in to submit a passport application and my experience was pretty good! I set up an appointment online a few days before and everything was mostly smooth. Just note: they don't have the equipment to take a passport photo. I was told that it was down (implying that it was temporary). When I went a shop down the street to get a picture, they said the post office has been sending folks to them for quite some time. so come with a passport photo even though they say they provide that service online. The girl who took my application was really patient with me and reviewed my application to make sure I didn't do anything incorrectly. I expedited my application and received my passport exactly 1 week later. read more

The remodel has helped with the flow and lighting here but this is still a very busy post office. Be prepared to wait. Some of the staff are *super* friendly and efficient, while others are rather brusque in dealing with customers. There is a self-service kiosk here as well, which the usps website says is available 24 hours, but the lobby here is locked outside of business hours, effectively making the kiosk unusable outside of these hours (unlike, say, the one 12th St/Columbia Pike in Arlington, which is available 24 hours). The line moves slowly no matter what time you're here but it is a convenient location for Eastern Market and the nearby shops/restaurants. read more

The reason that there are either 5 star reviews or 1 star reviews must be the delta between visiting Anthony (5 star gent) or Yvette (the human USPS version of Ursula, the villian from Ariel). Yvette feels she possesses some authority over us line-standers and uses it to frustrate, inconvenience, and generally play favorites. She will literally pull people she knows out of line to help them, and others she'll ignore and be on her phone or whatever while the line grows. Her name has come up in horror stories on all the neighborhood listservs, etc. I have no idea how she still works there...oh wait, it's USPS. The staff here at the 'Eastern Market' post office were so very kind. I came in to wrap and mail off some poshmark sales & they greeted me immediately. Also asked if I needed any assistance. I wasn't surprised so much at the fact that they had to work the day after Thanksgiving...it was the disposition of the postal workers that really warmed my heart. I told 'Anthony' a gray haired, black bearded gentleman how their facility was clean & how their kindness went a long way. We talked about other post offices I frequented (he knew each one) but how this one by far was the best experience yet. He said everyday felt like Christmas working at the post office which I thought was sweet...with all the packages and what not :) Made a few more posh sales today, so I think I'll go back and visit them tomorrow. Horrible service from Yvette! I needed a piece of clear, packing tape. (6 inches) She clearly could have provided me with clear packing tape. Instead she said, I would have to buy it, we dont give out free tape. What happened to this once friendly, neighborhood community post office? Let me start by saying the staff is and always have been courteous and extremely helpful. Unfortunately... WHOM EVER DELIVERS PACKAGES TO THIS LOCATION HAS NOT DELIVERED ANY OF MY PACKAGES!!!!!! I am a bit irate because I got a P.O Box for a reason. To eliminate my packages form being misplaced and so I could actually receive them. My Christmas gifts were never obtained and now items for my small business has not showed either. I hope this review puts a fire under someone's ass!!! I have a small business and go to the post office 5 days a week. I decided to go a post office near a location that I was running an errand. I waited in line for about 5 minutes before Ms. Yvette called me to her line. She did not greet me when I walked up and seemed upset. Our entire transaction she had a nasty attitude and zero customer service skills. I've been to this location on several occasions given its central location and they never disappoint in having the worst customer service ever. The last instance was particularly horrendous. We went in to process our daughter's passport application recently. When they finally attended to us (mind you we had an appointment), they rudely informed us that it was not a renewal but a new passport we were requesting because you can't renew a child's passport. Fine. Regardless of this, we had completed the correct form. We were then informed that their camera wasn't working so we had to run to a Fedex closeby to quickly get a passport picture (warning: come with passport photos... their camera seems to never be working). After finally getting the passport photo, they proceeded to process the passport application which was painful as they were condescending and at certain points in the process would yell at you if you did something they didn't explicitly ask you to do but was evident (e.g. filling out your name before they explicitly would tell you to). Unfortunately, even though we brought our daughter's old passport, they did not include the passport when they mailed everything out. We chalked this up to it being a "new" passport versus "renewal" as they had so rudely informed us. Fast forward a month... I get a letter from the passport agency saying they could not continue processing our application without the old passport sent back. Due to this error, the passport processing was delayed and we had to spend more money to send the old passport back. The reason we went to the post office to process our daughter's passport application was to ensure we did everything correctly since we don't do this that often. Not only were they extremely rude and condescending but they didn't even do everything right so they actually delayed the process. I would highly recommend going anywhere but here to process important things like a passport application. I would also highly recommend going anywhere but here for any other postal services since they are always rude and who really needs that? read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I came to the post office for a walk-in in passport appointment. I arrived at 3:20. When I got there I was greeted and asked to wait. While waiting, the clerk, Yvette, had a full conversation with a customer who was no longer being served about real estate. Meanwhile, there was a line of about 5 people waiting to be served. Myself and other customers sat there in disbelief. After she finished her conversation and took the ladies business card, she called me up to the counter. When I got to the counter I mentioned that I had 3 applications for my children. She mentioned that she could only take 2 because I came late--mind you it's 3:30pm at this point. I replied that I thought the walk-ins were from 3-4, on a first come first serve basis. She responded that she had appointments all day and she's only taking 2 more. I mentioned that it was horrible customer service and she said we'll find someone else to do and walked away. I'm just appalled at the poor quality of service. Downgrading to one star, as this place never fails to disappoint. I walked in today just before they were closing. The entrance smelled like piss. I tried to use the self-service kiosk, but the scale was set to 12 ounces, without anything on it. Who knows how many people got ripped off today. I set off to leave at their 5 pm closing time, and one person was in front of me. An employee named "Ms. Yvette" shut the door in front of us (locking us in) and started a new transaction at one of the counters. So we couldn't get out and had to wait there smelling piss. A third customer, with two young daughters, tried to leave and had to wait there smelling piss. After a few minutes, I brought this to Ms. Yvette's attention, and she basically said she didn't care. Also, it kind of irks me that the guy with the beard finishes every transaction with, "Have a blessed day." So inappropriate. read more

Employees don't even know their policies and they give you the most attitude EVER! I tried to mail a knife to get sharpened and the employee said it's dangerous so they can't ship it. Any person with ANY COMMON SENSE would have known that you could mail a knife because you could buy them on-line. And in my case, I told her I ordered my knife online and that it was ridiculous to say that knives can't be mailed. She said with a roll eye, "After 9/11, dangerous items can't be shipped, blah blah blah." Well, since I live nearby, I went home, looked up the policies on mailing knives and according to the US Postal Service (http://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_015.htm), knives are legal to be mailed. So I went back to the same Post Office, saw the same attendant, and showed her the policy. What does she do? Rolls her eye again! This post office should fire their employees and take away their ridiculous pension plans because they don't deserve a dime of it. read more

I cannot get over the irony of the location of the worst Post Office in United States history being on Capitol Hill. Nothing gets done in the government and it's truly exemplified here. I have honestly waited in shorter lines for the most popular roller coaster at an amusement park. Also, I implore you to be home for all your deliveries. Use sick leave or whatever it takes to get your workout gear or neckties delivered. If you're not home when they arrive, fuggetaboutit! They have lost, at least, 4 of my packages. I'm STILL waiting on them to call me back about 2 missing packages from 2011. Then there's the issue with the customer service...there is none. Bottom line, don't expect much. Like you shouldn't expect to get your packages and you shouldn't expect to be on time for a doctor's appt you have scheduled the next day. Odds are you'll still be in line... read more
