Union Post Office Side door in the parking lot - The image shows the side of a brick commercial building with a glass door, small windows, and a yellow utility door. The parking lot in front is mostly empty, with a curb and sidewalk visible. The photo is taken from inside a vehicle, with part of the dashboard and windshield visible at the bottom. The sky is clear and blue, indicating a sunny day.

I'm disgusted! It seems lately every time I come here there's a problem. After pulling up the Yelp page and seeing this establishment is literally rated 1 and 1/2 stars, you'd think they would do something about it. The last time I came here which was yesterday I passed by the self-service machine to get assistance from an attendant because the line at Self-Service was just too long. While assisting me, the attendant told me I could go to the self-serve in order to scan my packages. I explained to her that there was a line at self-serve; so she began to scan while telling me what was wrong with the way I put the label on the package. It seemed I just couldn't do anything right in her eyes. Okay fine, so I thanked her and got my receipt. My visit before this one, I attempted to get a money order but the attendant required to see my drivers license before she would give it to me. I have been living in this town for 20 years and coming to the post office equally as long. I have never had an issue with trying to get a money order nor have they ever asked to see my license except this one time so it was frustrating to say the least. I did not have my license on me so I had to go to another post office to get the money order. I went to Maplewood Post Office and had zero problems getting what I needed. Today I come here to Union Post Office to send off more packages. I go in and stand on line at the self serve only to find a man who is scanning about 20 packages. He turns around and says to me "I'm going to be a while" so I go to the attendant to be serviced. The attendant tells me to leave my packages at the window but when I ask for a receipt I am told "you can get a receipt from self-serve." I explain that I would have gone to self serve however the person there was going to take a very long time. The attended loudly exclaims "WHO????" I softly respond "the young man at the machine" She then scans my packages and gave me a receipt like it was such a hard chore. My question: Since when is Union post office directing all customers to the self-serve? I don't mind using it...in fact, I actually prefer self-service so I don't have to deal with their unprofessionalism and stank attitudes but if I decide to go to an attendant for whatever reason- shouldn't that be my right???? Dear Union post office employees, please get it together. To have a job is a blessing. To have a job in this economy is a God-sent and to have a job at the post office where you have great benefits, a paycheck and some job security is awesome! So why are y'all trying to give your job away to a machine? And why are y'all so dang rude? If the request to direct customers to the machine is coming from upper management I can understand to a certain degree but doesn't upper management require the attendants to be kind, professional and polite to the customers too? No I don't recommend coming here. I think I'll start using One of Union's other 2 post offices or I'll take the drive to a post office in another town. #ByeUnionPostOffice

Worst service and even worse managers. Pretentious and dragging their feet. Questions were a burden.

Customer service is poor. Did not have any money orders available but didn't offer any assistants. Just rude

However, when I arrived, the store was closed. Another patron and I waited outside until 9:17 AM when an employee--whom I believe may be the manager and possibly the only employee regularly working at this location--arrived and opened the store. This was not an isolated incident. On numerous occasions in the past, the store has either opened late or temporarily closed during posted business hours while the employee left the premises to run personal errands. There have also been instances where I was asked to wait outside because the employee was leaving the store to obtain breakfast, during which time the store was closed to customers. When the employee arrived on March 4, I calmly expressed my frustration regarding the repeated delays and closures during the posted hours of operation. At the time, I had my two-year-old child with me. Rather than addressing the concern professionally, the employee became visibly upset and defensive and began verbally confronting me about why she was late. The employee then chose to serve the other waiting customer while refusing service to me. She subsequently locked me out of the store and waited for police to arrive. I contacted the police myself, and when they arrived they informed me that businesses may legally refuse service. However, the circumstances strongly suggest that this refusal was based on a personal grievance rather than any legitimate business or safety concern. As a result of this situation, I was forced to drive approximately three miles to another UPS Store location in order to complete my returns. While there, I was told that several residents from my neighborhood frequently travel to that location because they prefer not to deal with the employee at the Plainfield store or because the store is often closed with a sign stating that the employee will return shortly.

The shelves looked sad, with plenty of empty sections and a strong going-out-of-business aura. I felt bad for the single employee as well as the random two or three other customers wandering the store as aimlessly as I was. I spotted some overpriced battery banks and extension cords, packing tape and copier paper, but not the one office item I had expected to find. Yet I did manage to spot a Taylor Swift coloring book. (Yes, I'm a fan of the pop singer, but this is the last place I'd go looking for such a thing.) Unless the Amazon pick-up boxes and the FedEx counter are keeping it rolling in cash, I'd expect this location, if not the chain, to be bankrupt within a couple of years.

They were very nice and helped a lot to find the perfect chair. It was also moderately priced, which made us happy in this economy. My mom loves this chair now. As for the Staples itself, it felt kind of dead inside, but oddly homey. I think that made me enjoy my visit even more. It felt like Wall-E after they planted the plant and revived humanity. Perhaps a remaining store in a mall that is on the verge of closing. But not in a way that one would feel disdain. It is comfortable. This store has been on my mind ever since I went just because of how... storely it is. That is all to say: I suggest it if you need chairs and enjoy a joyfully haunting vibe in stores.
