Staff was good. No main entrance into the main tellers section. Two doors in the side to PO Boxes…read moreand then another door into the main area. They helped me tape up my box better than I did

So far so good…read more The passport person (Skip) from the Kingston P.O. went on vacation ("you MUST come in today [Thursday] before 4:30 otherwise you can't get it expedited because I am going on vacation!"); I had already passed my lunch break, and didn't feel like heading out for unbillable hours to spend time frazzled with a manic postal worker. Princeton/Palmer Square directed me to the main location on Carnegie, which doesn't take passport appointments on Saturday. But here, the woman was pleasant on the phone, told me I needed one check for $169.85 (passport+card+expedite fee) and another for $42.50 (application+Express mail); both could also be paid with a debit card (Skip told me to take in one check for, oh, just take in a blank check, maybe 2--is there a run on checks in this country or do I somehow need pre-addressed checks prior to leaving the house?). And I have an 11:00AM appointment tomorrow (Saturday). I may or may not ask the post office to take photos, as UPS took potentially less bad than previous passport photos for me. Also--it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. There are 10:30 and 10:45 appointments prior to mine. Will update tomorrow. Update:Maybe I'm wierd, but it's unusual for postal people to be so helpful. We were waiting in line, and just before 11, a call was made for anyone with passport work to be done. Yeah! That's me! I had filled out the wrong form and had to fill out another, and then was taken through the steps to get everything else done. No smootching! I'm jealous! :) The woman was nice and got us sorted out quickly (we were out by 11:10). Great service. UPDATE 8/31: Good news: the passport arrived with my documents on Saturday--yeah! Bad news: somehow their processing of the photo gave me a pig-pink sunburn. It even looks as though my head was cut out and attached to my neck after photoshopping with a red filter. Oh the joys of ugly passports one has to cart around for 10 years.

If you knew how the United States Postal Service is run, you would never complain again (at least…read moreto the guy weighing your package.) The Post Office is for all intents and purposes a jobs program managed through a strangulating thicket of outmoded work and funding rules by the United States Congress whose members all want to deliver jobs and pork to their districts damn all sanity and economic logic. Congress has driven the country $30T into debt, do you think for a minute they're going to shed their fiscal mania for the Post Office. Most of these legislative leeches couldn't run a fruit stand profitably. Over the past twenty years first class mail has all but evaporated and the front desk at the USPS has gone from selling stamps to handling pallets of online shipments while their Congressional overseers have allowed UPS, FedEx and Amazon to eat their lunch on pricing and speed. So, if things seem a little haywire I never blame the good folks on the front lines. Sure the mail has been a little slow but I blame our latest and lamest Postmaster General Louis DeJoy who in a desperate attempt to Make the USPS Great Again has intentionally cut back hours, services and available technologies to their legally permissible limits. And let's be real, over the last decade customer service has taken a nosedive in every conceivable industry from health care to the Jelly of the Month Club so rudeness and incompetence is hardly an exclusive virtue of the USPS. Like anywhere else, it just depends on who you get. The USPS does a fine job considering the idiots running the joint. Five stars for the front line who soldier on admirably while their masters choke on the entrails of their pork. Oink on Senators.

Yes they can drive you crazy. But they deliver (ahem) day after day. Their costs to mail packages…read moreis way cheaper than the competition. The employees are almost always patient and kind. They're always on their feet. They have to deal with us...the public. AND they are restricted heavily by the government. If they were a publically traded company I'd buy stock in them.
