My husband bought an interstate bus pass and parking ticket for work. Same time he got ill and could not work. He decided to refund the Bus Pass and Parking ticket. We mailed it to Penn Plaza Newark NJ for the refund ($319.45) via certified mail. When we tracked it was awaiting delivery for one month. I tried to call them at 2 Federal Square Newark NJ several times without an answer. Someone gave me an alternate number to call the Supervisor there. He told me to come in person to speak to him. When I went in he was acting aggressive towards me because someone at another Post Office gave me a number to call him. He said he would call my husband the same day and never did. I decided to go back in person desperate to get our money back I was told he was not there. Up until today we never hear from the Supervisor again. We lost $319. 45. It is the worse post office I have ever experience in the country. Please find somewhere else for your services. They can't be trusted. read more

While in Newark I had to send a document next day air to Atlanta and no copies , emails , scanned , etc , is allowed .The document must be the original and arrive the next day or else I am screwed so I was lucky to visit a us post office that actually has normal, friendly , courtesy , professional postal employees. I filled out the correct label and handed the window clerk the correct next day envelope. Damn 25 bucks for a letter that weights less then 6 ounces but it arrived the next day in Atlanta before 12pm and I ain't screwed . Review of Passport Services: The Federal Square post office location offers passport services. I went here to replace a lost one. I recommend that you go to the location as early as possible, so you can be one of the first seen. There is a specific service window for passport services. You'll need to queue up there and sign your name on a list to be seen (each line is an estimated time slot). Then they'll ask you to fill out forms and then ensure that you have the right form of payment. A postal worker will call names off in the order of the list. When your name is called, you'll be taken to a seating area outside of the office where your passport picture will be taken. You wait there and then you'll be called into the room. After you get your picture taken, you'll then wait again for them to process the paperwork and then mail out your application to the Fed (you pay for postage). The whole process took about 45 minutes for me. read more

If you reside near this post office I suggest you change your mailing address to another location.If you don't have that option I suggest calling them to hold your packages/mail and retrieve them in person.They stole 10 of my packages,lied about it(as if I don't have cameras installed)than tried to give me the run around.It wasn't until I threatened to contact the authorities that I finally received my packages.Good luck trying to speak to anybody over there since they purposely ignore phone calls.But when you do get a response expect nothing but lies. read more

This is the worst Post Office in the entire country, very bad customer service I stent 40 mins in line waiting once I reached the window they told me I had to fill out a custom form for international shipping after doing that they told me I've to wait in line again for another 20 mins after getting back to the window the lady told me the system was down since the morning. Brilliant! The classic architecture makes it aesthetically pleasing to step into the grandest of quasi-federal agencies, but the ease and speed of service creates a sense of accomplishment here. No, I'm not kidding! The self-service kiosks represents one of the most welcome advances in postal technology, and which is missing at my own local post office. The branch is well stocked with Priority Mail and Express Mail envelopes, boxes and labels. Again, this is a welcome feature at any post office, and one sorely lacking at my nearest outpost in Bushwick, Brooklyn. A postal employee helped me find the proper Priority Mail envelope for me, even without being asked! Moments later, when the self-service kiosk wasn't dispensing my postage, another employee offered to help, smacked the machine and out came my $6 postage for another package I was mailing. "So that's the trick!" I said. "There's always a trick," the gentleman replied. Clean, spacious, efficient and fast, I'm a fan. Also, kudos to the federal employees who properly shoveled the sidewalks around their buildings. (The sidewalks around the state buildings on Broad Street were in atrocious condition, a threat to public safety, and Gov. Chris Christie Gould be ashamed.) read more

This is my favorite Post office in NJ. its huge and beautiful. Plenty of space to write out addresses or get your packages situated. The staff is very friendly and the lines move efficiently. For something as essential as a postal service, you think that the USPS would get something right, but no, not at the main Newark US Post Office. Let's start with the pros: The building is absolutely beautiful inside. There are all these beautiful art deco pieces throughout, gorgeous ceilings, and well-preserved vintage mailboxes. It feels like walking into a very swanky museum hall's entrance when you come in. Then you see the lines... Somehow, the postal workers at the counters manage to be painfully slow, uninformed, and generally rude, every time I've been there. I should note that once in a while I get a clerk who is perfectly friendly, patient, and quick to suggest solutions for problems that he can't fix. But he's one of about a dozen people I have seen working at the main counter. Most of my postal business at the office revolves around picking up packages and certified letters. That window is normally staffed by a single worker who is usually not at the counter when you arrive. If there is no line, they're off doing something else and don't respond to the bell when you ring it. If you ring it a second time, you get a "ALL RIGHT! I HEARD YOU, I HEARD YOU!" from somewhere in the back. Eventually the employee saunters out, glares at you for interrupting whatever it was they were doing, and curtly takes your pickup slip into the fathomless depths. Sometimes, they don't come back. Well, they don't come back with your package, anyway. At least two times, I have come to the post office with a pickup slip for a certified letter--you know, the important kind--and the clerk was unable to find it. In one instance, the employee told me that it was out to be delivered. Later, I checked the USPS website and found that to be untrue. In fact, the letter was never out for delivery, and the only way I could retrieve it was by going to the post office. Hilarity ensues! The hours for the post office are really at odds with anyone who has a regular job, so I usually go on Saturdays. So does everyone else, so the lines can get really long. When the parcel pickup line is more than four people deep, you should probably either go find a chair or just come back another time. It's about as bad as playing the lottery. The general customer service line can wind out into the lobby, and on Saturdays there are usually only one or two clerks on duty. It can be a mess. Last, parking around the post office is atrocious. Most of the on-street spots are reserved for police, city government officials (it's right next to City Hall), or postal employees. People will double and triple park on the side streets (while illegal, it is custom in Newark), so even if you do get a spot, it might be some time before you can get out again. My favorite is when people double-park outside a valid parking spot. That's just... classy. Another warning... despite state and county laws requiring municipalities to mark every single handicapped accessible parking space, there are three or four unmarked handicapped spaces on Franklin Street. The signs designating the parking spaces are about 60 or 70 feet apart, kind of bracketing a large area that a bus could fit into. So, even if you don't see a handicapped parking sign right in front of you, you might still be in danger of getting a ticket. Before you get out of your car, look up and down the block a bit to make sure you're not in potential violation of the extremely arbitrarily-enforced Newark parking laws. read more

Andrew D's review perfectly nailed it! I've been going to this USPS location 1-2 times a month for about five months now and I absolutely cannot stand coming here! I'm all about supporting the "little guys" and I know that times are tough for USPS, however this particular location makes it hard for me to stomach doing an' business here! Two Stars For: Overall goodness of the USPS organization, competitive prices, the building is spacious and eye pleasing, plus they are conveniently located near my office. To state the obvious, this is the only place I can seem to find stamps nearby. The Con's: The customer service and parking is atrocious. The first couple of times I went here I excused the front desk staff's behavior as extremely sassy and diva-esque. However, I don't appreciate getting a huge dose of sass and attitude every time I ask a simple question like.. "How much for _____ stamps", "Do you have a pen", "Do you have anymore of the _____ boxes?". Plus, there are typically long lines, occasional crazies that wander in and the front desk staff is appears visibly annoyed when customers come to they're windows. I realize that the staff is constantly asked the same questions day-in & day-out but that isn't my fault! I work and have worked in customer service for a long time and I get that there is no end to stupid/ repetitive questions. Nonetheless, talking down to a customer, loudly taking about a customer to other staff member's/ customers, belittling them and making a customer feel stupid for asking a simple question is rude! My visit today, was the visit that finally broke the camel's back; the visit that confirmed my strong desire to longer do business with this particular location anymore! read more

Absolutely hate this post office! They have horrible service and sometimes I don't get my mail! I work from home and track packages I'm expecting, when it gets close to the time that the postal worker typical arrives I make sure that I'm free and clear in case they call me to sign for something. On several occasions I find that my mail was not delivered and that the post person would leave a "sorry we missed you note" how could they miss me, I was at home the whole time. I later found out they were just being lazy and not calling. There have been times when I've paid for two day shipping and this post office had my package and they just didn't attempt to deliver it. I would have to go pick it up myself and they would hassle me for not having a pink slip. After I would go pick up the package myself and file a complaint a "sorry we missed you" slip would appear. I try with everything in me to avoid this place. I'll go out my way to use other ways to mail my packages and I'm in a 2 min walking distance from this horrible customer service having place! read more

This is where dreams go to die. Seriously, this has to be what purgatory feels like....This may actually be purgatory. This post office is probably the same size as NY penn station's but only has one maybe two windows open at any given time? You will literally stand at an empty window for 15-20 minutes waiting for an attendant to service you for a box pick up as a line piles behind you. Funny thing is you'll peek through windows watching people slooooowly trudge about. Not a sense of urgency anywhere. Get some people who actually care about having a job in this place. Not enough windows open. Priority Mail supplies and labels rarely replenished and if I cut line to ask at the window I get attitudes. Lines a too long. Nobody even smart enough to coordinate customers based on their needs. There is no reason why people trying to mail an envelope has to wait in a long line waiting on people getting a million money orders to pay their bills or dealing with a complex international delivery. I asked to borrow tape to reinforce a package and was denied, was forced to BUY A ROLL which I ended giving it back so other people don't have the same problem (they should be ashamed). I try to avoid the staff and rather use the self service kiosk but sadly that has glitches as well. If this was a non Government business customers would revolt but because this is the postal service, we are somehow supposed to put up with this? I don't think so! Every time I'm there waiting in line I ask myself why I keep coming here...every time I'm there waiting I feel bad for everyone else too because nobody deserves to waste a hour or more of their F-ing lives trying to mail a F-ing package. TERRIBLE Service. The website said that they accepted US passport applications at 9AM. I got here at 9:30 and the window was not open. I put my name on the sign up sheet and ask a teller. The teller said wait til they open at 10:30. So I waited an hour and at 10:45 ask again when they would open and now they say 11:30. This is ridiculous. I had to leave. Just make an appointment at another post office and don't bother with these people. read more

To be the main post office, service is terrible. Tellers, has nasty attitudes for nothing. People waiting in line as tellers having long conversations amongst themselves about their home life. Can not get the right answers when asking for information. The USPS web site state one thing, tellers don't know, and state something different. They charge a higher weight package fee than the local post offices. For example, I took a package here, and they wanted a high fee for the package. I took the same package to a local post office, who charged me a lesser fee. Tellers run scams on customers by telling them that first class mail is cheaper than 2nd, 3rd, or any lower class of mail. To get customers to pay higher MAILING fees. They don't scan packages until a day or two later, thus you can not track your package. In my case it took three days later to be able to track my package. And the biggest disappointment is "BLACK" tellers treat Black customers very unfairly, and in a discriminatory manner. The staff at the main post office need better training or new professional people need to be hired! read more
