This review is about a specific employee: a woman with big eyeglasses who sits near the door. She is hostile and incompetent. On this day she was wearing a white beret covered with hearts. When I walked in, there were two employees behind the counter. One was helping a customer. The other was Heart-Hat, who sat there scrolling on her phone and ignoring the customers standing in line. This went on for several minutes. I figured Heart-Hat was on break and the working employee would be helping me soon. So I took out my phone to check my email. Well, at some point Heart-Hat must have decided to get back to work. I looked up and she was snarling at me in a low voice: "I called you." I said, "Oh! I didn't hear you." Which I hadn't--I'm a senior with a hearing disability. She said to me in a nasty voice: "That's because you were on your phone." I reminded her that she'd been on *her* phone for a long time. Well, that really set her off. She started ranting and when I asked if she had Christmas stamps, she yelled "No!" At that point I moved to the next window to escape her anger. The friendly worker there showed me the many holiday stamps they indeed had, and also explained how I could buy other designs at the lobby kiosk. I confided to the friendly one, "You know, I've signed petitions in the past to save this post office." Heart-Hat shouted over at us: "Nobody cares!" This post office does still have helpful and kind employees. Just avoid the one with the big eyeglasses. She hates people and hates her job. read more

This is my local post office but I rarely come to this location because they opens later than others, at 10am. I decided to come this morning for the 10am opening but waited and the doors didn't open nor did it look like anybody was inside to open them. Other customers were coming by too and leaving disappointedly. There's nowhere to leave a package, only a mail box for letters. So disappointed! The perfect mix of Big Apple Attitude and West Village Style! Trust me- I know post offices- I've been to the post office in Seattle, the post office in Enid Oklahoma, the post office in Melbourne Florida, even the fabled post offices of suburban Cleveland. Foreign post offices? Do Paris, France and Bonn, Germany and Manchester England sound exotic enough for you? Like I said- I've been around and I know post offices. The vibe here at 527 Hudson is one word: AMAZEBALLS Yeah- you read that right: AMAZEBALLS. I said it, someone had to When you come here you can find yourself standing in line with a beret wearing grey haired old hippie, a tiny tortoiseshell glasses wearing ad exec (who also has a beret), a hipster whose jeans leave no room for genitals, someone you kinda recognize from Mad Men (or maybe Law and Order). It's so West Village you probably can't even handle the scene.... Once you walk in and see the dull, ugly decor you know this post office hasn't sold out (unlike the rest of the city) and everything about this place just screams "keep it real". Get this: I saw ZERO (not one) person who I thought was a tourist. Yes there were slobs, but slobs with real New York style, not a slobby tourist no-style look I could go on and on about this place. I was here a few days ago to mail some late Christmas presents....the vestibule had a self-service machine and a package depository so I could almost get everything I needed without going inside...but I had forgotten to tape one package. I had to go inside where there were two staff behind the barrier and about 5 people in line. The staff were terrific. One man was taking a long time, so the lovely woman behind the barrier had me come up while waiting for him...at first she told me to buy tape, then she saw what I needed and just gave it to me. Both staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Everyone around me was saying "thank you" over and over. It was an efficient and pleasant morning! read more

This is a very small post office - cramped and long lines depending on what time you come. Some days -- if you don 't work - there is no line and its not that bad. Watch out during rush hour, can't get in the door, but just head uptown a little there is one on 14 and another on Varick - huge and less packed. The self service machine is awesome and honestly would prefer if that's all they had. As Landon noted many of us feel the woman at the front door is rude and highly confrontational. She is so unnecessary - and I've spoken to more than one person who refuse to go in because of her. We are afraid of her. It would be great to have the area in front open at later hours but for the most part I've never had to wait on line. I won't be returning to this one though -! read more

Definitely nice to have this small and friendly USPS here in the village but what I don't understand is that most staff taking lunch when most busy hours. I don't think one person at the counter during lunch hours is not sufficient. It always causes the line to be very long and create unnecessary negative energies from over worked staff and people waiting. But then, I see the same practice at any post office in the city unfortunately....but new addition of self service machine helps a lot. Best time to avoid the crowd is fist thing in the morning (by10 AM). To make my life happy and easy, I get any paper works done at USPS.com and print any necessary forms from their not-so-clear site. It surely helps if there isn't any forms that I need at the office. Because of physical size of the space, to pick up any missed package, you need to go to the office on Varick St. and King St. Lastly, Mrs. Brown who sits near the door is not professional, throwing things (at me) and ordering to do things or don't do that. I am always hoping my packages will arrive okay and so far everyone got my packages. If you come to this Post office, do avoid her! Other day, I happily witnessed that she was actually kind and charming to a customer that looked like her. read more

I have had nothing but pleasant experiences at this post office. I have never in my life run into an angry lady at the door (maybe they fired her?). The staff are helpful and patient. They've guided me through some very heavy and oddly shaped shipments, and made some great conversation in the process. I usually go early on Saturday mornings. Usually, there's no line. This just happened about an hour ago. I entered the office, which was completely empty with no customers and no staff members at the counter. I stood quietly where the line was designated and waited a couple minutes when then, an old white man with white hair emerged from the back. He was the only staff working as far as I can tell and the only one at the counter. After he settled down into his spot, I stepped towards his directions since he was the only one there. I only took 2 or 3 steps, about to greet him and ask if he was available. However, he picked up his signage "Next window please" and proceeded to loudly slammed the sign down several times onto the counter. It was extremely rude, dramatic, and unnecessary on many levels. First, it didn't even make sense since almost every computer at the counter had the same blue sign and second, there was no other workers and third, the only thing he was doing was shuffling papers at his chair. So I waited for another (nonexistent) staff member to help me out and half a minute later, the old man puts away the sign and gestured for me to come. All this happened without him even fully looking at me. Why did he waste so much energy into banging the "next window" sign on the table when ironically, he was the only staff there and we haven't even exchanged a word yet? I really don't understand. It could have been a pleasant experience for the both of us if he was mature enough to use his words to say "hold on a minute please, I'll get to you soon". Unfortunately it didn't turn out this way as he prefered to be unprofessional without reason and slam down his irrelevant sign. read more

So I went over to check my PO Box, and got there at 4:03 PM. The outside door to the foyer was propped open and when I went to open the internal door in the foyer, I found it locked. Inside, there was clearly visible a line of people still waiting to do their postal business. A postal employee was standing on the other side of the door with a set of keys unlocking the door for those customers who were still inside as they finished their business. I showed him my PO Box key, in hopes that he would extend me the courtesy of popping in real quick to get the mail out of my PO BOX. He basically smirked and said "We close at 4:00." (3 minutes prior). Obviously I was pretty annoyed. I stepped outside and lit up a cigarette and sipped on my coffee to try and be a little less annoyed. Postal worker inside continued to unlock the door for the customers inside as they were finished, all the while giving me the stink-eye through the glass doors. At one point, with customers still inside, the postal worker in question disappears through the back of the Post Office, and comes out a side door and shouts at me, "What's your PO Box Number?" To which I responded, "Why do you need to know if you're not going to let me in to check it?" His response, which was a little unsettling for me, as I'm now concerned with the security of my mail, was "Well, I was going to get your mail for you, but if you want to have an attitude about it, never mind, come back on Monday." I told him, "thanks, but no thanks, I'll come back on Monday when they're open." Am I to presume that this USPS employee would have given me the mail from any box number I had rattled off from the sidewalk while smoking a cigarette and drinking a coffee? I mean, doesnt that sound a little fishy? If I'm not using my key to get my mail he's just going to take my word for it? SHADY!!! While I can totally appreciate the importance of posted hours of operation, and that the postal workers shouldn't be expected to stay late for stupid customer reasons, it's not like I was knocking on the door of an empty building. There were 6 people standing in line waiting to be serviced at the counter. If he had just done the courteous thing and let me in real quick, I would have been in and out before the first of those 6 people were even done at the counter. WIth so many other options for getting mail and/or Mail related services, is it any wonder the USPS is struggling, and that prices keep going up and service keeps going down? I'm not generally a crabby customer, nor do I have crazy expectations of the customer service I expect. Hell, the last time I came in to check my Box, I brought a $15 Box of Holiday cookies in for the employees of the West Village Station (clearly not the best $15 I've spent). On a side note, though I realize the man behind the glass door had no way of knowing this, on my way to the PO as I was walking, an old woman in front of me fell on the sidewalk, and I stopped to help her up and gather the things that had fallen when she fell. I grew up in NYC and so I'm pretty used to less than stellar service in post offices here. However, this one has now eclipsed the dreaded Canal Street Station for the absolute worst I've experienced. I rarely go here because it's so small and the lines can be long, but today it seemed convenient. Oh foolish me! The line moved quickly enough. The woman in front of me in line was in a motorized scooter and was on the phone. How she was going to maneuver that thing in this hallway of a post office was beyond me, but whatever. Her turn in line came and she was still on the phone, but started rolling carefully toward the counter. Apparently she wasn't fast enough because the obnoxious woman behind the counter (short, African-American, hair pulled back) kept shouting, "NEXT! NEXT!" Then she started looking at me shouting it as if I was supposed to run in front of this disabled person or turn her cart over and step over her body to get to the counter. I did neither because a) I was raised by civilized human beings, and b) the woman was getting to the counter! Of course there was a man behind me who was obviously very important and annoyed by this woman being disabled and my being polite, so he threw a hissy and ran up to the counter and asked for stamps. I stared at the postal worker with a look of disbelief and she smugly said, "I called next!" Yes you did and the person who was next is now being ignored while you serve someone else. Then I was called to another window--the one closest to the door. I wonder if the woman working it was the one all the other reviewers have warned against. She was definitely awful so she could be the same one! I told her I wanted some holiday stamps hoping she'd tell me which styles they had left. She just said "One book, two book, three book, four book?" I paused not understanding what was happening. It felt like some weird Dr Seuss moment. She then repeated the line with an added sneer. "One book," I replied," but can I see which kinds you have?" She pulled one kind out and at that point they were good enough. I just wanted to get out of there. I sent a very important first-class certified mail last Saturday, but until this Saturday my status still shows my mail was accepted by the store, which means they did not even sent out my mail!!!! For those users/customers at this post office on Hudson Street, be advised that the nasty, dumb idiot nearest the door, Ms. Brown, is no longer working at the Hudson Street post office. It's still embarrassingly slow to get to the counter to speak to a clerk, and there is one specific woman clerk farthest from the door, Debra, who take an inordinate amount of time with customers as she schmoozes with 'em while unfortunates are awaiting service on the line. I would venture to say that Jose and David are the most helpful at this post office, and the new (female) clerk seems to really know her business! read more

I paid for priority service which was supposed to be 2 days, after 5 days I tried to track the package and it showed that it had been delivered to the wrong address on multiple occasions, yet they had the correct addres listed. I attempted to call the local post office directly, but the number listed was out of service. I attempted to contact them by e-mail, but the system allows you to start the process but not to type or send an e-mail. I finally had to call the 1-800 number for the USPS, where I had to wait 47 minutes on hold before speaking to someone. They then informed me it was out for delivery today (extermely late). I told them I deserved a refund because I paid substantially more to get it here quickly and they failed to deliver. He informed me that they don't offer refunds. The gentleman I spoke to at the 1-800 numbe was very nice, proffesional, and apologetic, which I appreciated. What I did not appreciate was paying for expedited service, having my package arrive very late (as of now, I still do not have the package), the post office listing a number that is out of service, the post office providing a customer service e-mail that does not work, and making me wait 47 minutes to speak to someone. This is a big service fail on multiple levels. I was told they would call me back withing 72 hours to address the complaint so we will see if this happens. I realize that the USPS is a government institution, but it is still a business that takes money from customers. Therefore, they should deliver on what they promise and provide better service. read more
