Walking around Miami Beach I couldn't help but notice this architectural beauty. The Miami Beach Post Office was designed as an Art Moderne U.S. Post Office building by Miami native Howard Lovewell Cheney. The Art Deco design was chosen to blend in with the surrounding architecture. The post office was built under the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression in 1937. Features of the building include a central, barrel-shaped section with the rest of the building extending as wings down Washington Avenue and 13th Streets. The main feature of the building is a circular lobby with a cone-shaped roof and a tall, thin decorative copula topping it off. Inside the lobby are murals by Charles Hardman depicting Ponce de Leon's invasion of Florida on the wall above gold colored post office boxes. Charles Hardman, a native Floridian, was commissioned to paint the mural in 1940 by the Section of Fine Arts of the Works Progress Administration. The Section of fine arts commissioned over 1,300 murals and 300 sculptures. This part of the New Deal was created to employ artists and help them get back on their feet. Hardman created a three section mural called Episodes from the History of Florida to adorn the post office lobby wall. The mural sections are entitled Discovery, which shows Ponce de Leon's arrival in Florida in 1513, de Soto and the Indians, showing Hernando de Soto and his men engaged in battle with Native Americans in 1539, and Conference, which shows General Thomas Jesup negotiating with Native Americans after the Second Seminole War in 1837. It's already 12 PM and nobody cared to take care of me. I asked the lady and the supervisor on the shift told me that they had just gone to lunch. Why will they have availability at 11:45 A.M. and then send people to lunch.??? Large imposing historic Art Deco Designed Post Office....there is a mural on the ceiling upon entering and one on the wall, it depicts Ponce de Leon challenging the Seminoles. Big thanks to the staff for helping me send my souvenirs home! Be sure that you're not standing on the line that's for passports ONLY (unfortunately there's no signage for that). My only complaint is that this and MANY other USPS locations RUN OUT OF SUPPLIES, that is inexcusable. The place could hold an army - why can't they store supplies? I'm not sure of why the rating is so low. My friend needed to send something off, the line wasn't long and we were helped right away by another fellow New Yorker. He was cool and let us know which delivery was best in order for the package to arrive at the time she needed. When I was a kid living on Miami Beach in the 1950's,I would go to the Post office to make a deposit in my Postal Savings account, buy E Bond savings stamps as well as play with the 3 inch naval gun which you could elevate and traverse.On hot summer days the Post Office was always cool especially in the rotunda where the mail boxes were assessable.The Old City Hall and Fire Department just on the corner on Washington Ave.It was a great place to grow up! My schools were right up the street at Washington Ave, Central Beach Elementary School (Feinberg Elementary School now.) and Ida M. Fisher Junior High and Miami Beach Senior High School. Flamingo Park was three blocks away with a Public swimming pool. There was just 36,000 people on Miami Beach in the 50's.I joined the Army in 1962! read more

Good enough. I mean, every USPS will have its share of complaints, slow lines and rude employees, conversed with great experiences, happy people and nice workers. Go there enough and you'll be about 50-50 in the long run. I have a PO Box here and have had it for 4-5 years. For the most part I'm happy with it. Every once in awhile I deal with an employee who's having a bad day, that'll happen when you're dealing with enough customers in the heart of SoBe day in and day out. The first thing you notice when you walk in via the main entrance is how beautiful this post office is... but don't let that fool you... once you get to the actual room where things happen you quickly realize why this place sucks so royally... 1st... no stamp machines, you have to wait in line a good hour to buy stamps... 2nd... no package drop-off/pick-up window... got a pink slip from a lazy postal employee that didn't feel like finding your suite number? wait in line an hour... 3rd... rude employees... ok, not all of them, but most... I had a package that the tracking # claimed they left one of those pink papers, but it was a saturday in an office building - impossible... so I waited in line for a good hour or so and she looked bothered by my request to find my package, took the tracking # and went to the back (to do what, who knows? look for my package? obviously not) after waiting a (long) while she returned and told me the package was out with the post man... so i returned to work to wait said USPS employee... when he arrived, no package... so I had to call and get them to redeliver which meant waiting another day... worst post office... ever oh and they have spaces for like 10 people to work @.. theres always 1 during lunch time, you know, when EVERYONE goes to the post office? one $%^&ing employee to wait on the line going out the $%^&ing door? real nice... I don't know why this location is still open. It's huge and not well maintained: it looks filthy, there's only one cashier who is rude to everybody including people who do not speak English and the elder. Sometimes, the waiting times creep up to get assistance. I would not recommend coming to this location unless you really need to. read more

My business has been open for 9 months, we are located in a brand new shopping center on 5th and Jefferson ave, there are 8 new stores opening, and for some strange reason some of the delivery people will deliver to my address and others market as on deliverable, sending my important packages back to the sender, even though we have All have our own individual mailboxes that are clearly marked. But when I go in just to find out why is this happening, their customer service is a negative 10... don't expect any help from anyone who works at this postal office... Update. It seems they fired the 'it's not my job even though it is' people. The newer employees move the line faster. Actually allow things to be mailed. And most importantly, are not wildly and openly spouting racist remarks at customers. They still lose packages non stop. So I use other delivery services. But the office doesnt have the same vibe and attitude as waiting in line to be booked into county has anymore. read more

I mailed a few items and picked up stamps. Seems like an average post office with gift cards and decorative packaging for sending gifts. It's prettier than most post offices that I've stepped in. The ceiling painting looks neat, like being in an art gallery. There weren't a lot of people to become impatient in a line, so I'd say it was a good experience. read more

The U.S.Post Office at 1300 Washington Ave. in South Beach is the most pathetic excuse for a "business" ( government agency? ) that I have ever experienced. First of all, it is filthy. The floors are covered with litter....apparently none of the employees could be bothered with sweeping the place every few hours...oh I forgot...it's not in their "job description". What about pride? After all, you're the ones spending 8 hours a day in that dismal place. The overall mood is pretty grim. Yesterday I was forced to go there to mail my income tax payment by registered mail. There is no organization or instructions as far as the forms you must fill out....you are totally on your own. I finally found what I thought I needed and looked for a pen to start filling it out. A pen you say? Of course not....why would you expect there to be any pens? I politely asked one of the clerks if there were any pens. She refused to give me one....she said they get stolen. Are you f***king kidding me? I came here to pay you for your services.....but in order to do that, I must fill out some forms......that requires a pen....do you see how that works? Rather than try to offer a solution, she basically told me that it's my problem....she wouldn't have cared if I had left. Finally another customer lent me her pen. This post office is kind of okay 1.5 stars....but it's missing a lot of things that would make me like it more. The people that work at this office are a little nicer than some of the other post offices I've gone to. There is always a line though & it's clear when people they know come in because they will let them skip in line...which is really annoying. Plus as Miguel said there are never enough workers & always a line. On the plus side, I'm never in there longer than 15-20 minutes when I go to pick up a package. The thing that annoys me is that they don't have an automated mailer/weigher thing. A lot of post offices now have that self serve station, which I love. And this one doesn't have one, so you're forced to wait in the line. I just don't understand why they don't have one when they are so busy. Surprise! You get that too- for free! You know nothing and they hate you for it. Its the gift that keeps on giving... Want to pay with government legal tender? No you don't... or rather, no you can't! They don't have change and your stuck with your stupid legal currency, only losers accept US cash- duh!! To take it to the supreme level of apathy, they make it a point to not clean anything- at all- ever. Keep the service poor and the place disgusting so you always know what to expect. Oh lord. After ordering a package from eBay and running into a shipping error, I had to go to this USPS office to clarify what was going on with my package. I NEVER wanted to have to go here after reading so many dreadful reviews, but this morning was my special morning when I had to go. I walked in at 8:05am, five minutes after they open to avoid long lines, and I was successful in that aspect. There was only one customer in front of me, so I urge everyone; if you have to go, go early. I brought a paper along with me that included my address information and tracking number for the package. After TRYING to explain what was going on with my package to the attendant, she moaned under her breath, snatched my paper, and walked over to a computer while I was in the middle of talking to her. About two seconds later, she mumbled "your package was sent back to the seller yesterday." I tried to ask further questions to find out why, and she repeated her previous statement in a more aggressive tone and offered no other information regardless of any questions I had. Listen, I know that government office jobs can be intense and you have to deal with aggressive clientele on a regular basis, but it was 8:05 in the morning, I was patient, friendly, and just wanted to clarify something. I'm not self-entitled, and you don't have to treat me like a king, but a certain level of professionalism is to be expected at a United States Post Office, and this place fails miserably on every level. I hope my package was ACTUALLY sent back to the seller and not misplaced or lost somewhere in that building. I hope I never have to go in here again. read more

Ms. Jackie is a miserable old lady who has worked at the post office her entire life. She has job security and belongs to a union, so she treats people any way she wants. I've seen her be rude and demeaning to EVERY person that comes up to her, no exceptions (black, white, Asian, Hispanic). This is not a restaurant or a place you can simply not deal with anymore, we're stuck with them. Yet again, instead of getting my package that I'm tracking the whole way, I now have 'delivery status not updated.' (Forth time this year) Which means they lost my package again. This package went across the country, and sometimes across the planet. But as soon as it gets to miami beach PO. It gets stolen or lost. Nobody knows. When I call they point the finger at each other. No calls back. No package. By far the worst service inside the place, and obviously major problems in the back. My wife wants to call help me Howard. This has to be the worst post office in the States. There is absolutely no self service machines like in most other post offices. You have to stand in line to buy a simple stamp. It's dirty and basically a bare bones operation. Furthermore, the people that work there are unfriendly, full of attitude and treat you like they're doing you a favor. The woman in the picture is Norma and I have to say I have never encountered someone as rude and deliberately mean in my life. I was waiting in line and saw a customer approach her and immediatelly the customer told her she didn't have to be nasty and rude, that she was miserable, I kept watching as I could see her dismissive and just mean demeanor and attitude. When it was my turn as I approached her station and folded my letter she looked at me with a plain nasty look and stormed off, walked away!!! Pissed off because my letter wasn't 100% ready!!!! Not a word said at all!!! Then when she came back I was waiting for her with my letter ready in my hand and she started servicing the next person in line, so I told her I was here before, I have been waiting for you, she replied saying Now you have to wait! The person behind me said no it's ok, take care of her, and she insisted I had to wait, like it was a punishment for not having my letter ready!!!! Where are we???? Lord!!!! What kind of service is this???? What kind os person is this???? How long does it take to fold a letter and insert it inside an envelope???? UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Just plain rude, not an inch of kindness, respect, nothing, not a glimpse of that at all.... Really sad that someone like that still has a government job, you would expect at least some kind of cordiality, but no, this woman is truly miserable.
