Relocating to RVA, there is so much that is new and different. What isn't different is the reputation that any DMV has in terms of a 'Ugh, I have to give up a day to visit the DMV' feeling. I made an appointment about 3 weeks out, and you would think in that time that I would have done a better job of gathering the necessary documents... sigh. I got to the office about 15 minutes early, scanned the QR code on the door, and as I walked in, they were calling my number. The DMV employee was incredibly patient with my obvious stupidity that day. I had everything but the document for proof of residency. She directed me to a local Staples to print out a copy of something I could use, and directed me to come back to her station and not wait in line. Once I got back it took about 20 to 30 minutes to get everything situated. I can tell you without a doubt that if I had done something like that in my previous state, I would have been directed to a spot in their office that resembles the waiting room in 'Beetlejuice'. Kind and patient people get a total thumbs-up from me!

Some creative employee thought they'd spruce the drab surroundings with a bouquet of floral pens for patrons to use! How sweet! It brought a smile to my face knowing someone wanted to add a touch of humanity to an otherwise vacant atmosphere. Well done! Hours are M-F 8:30-4:30 with lunch closure from 1-2. Saturday hours are 8:30-11:30, lobby open 24 hours. Some post offices keep their lobby closed so it's nice this one stays open! It was pretty well stocked, was clean albeit dated, and it offered no passport service or greeting cards. There's plenty of parking and a drive by mailbox. All and all, this post office delivers adequate service to Surry!

The Masons built this structure and their insignia is displayed atop of the building. Not much else is nearby save a bank, the railroad tracks, a small park featuring a commemorative cannon, and a few other buildings and shops. It's such a tiny but friendly town! The postmaster and I talked about the price of stamps going up to $.60, and she said soon to be $.63, to which I responded that I still find it fascinating that the postal service can send a letter from one place to another for even that small price... I'll happily use the mail system for my letters, bills, thank you cards and greeting cards! The art of letter writing isn't dead after all! Hours: M-F 8:00-12:30, 1:30-4:30, Saturday 9:30-11:30.

This afternoon's library experience was here in Chester. This is a very large and quite modern…read morelibrary. Lots of glass and space, lots of open areas for reading, plenty of places to sit and study. I found a comfortable table in a "talking" area where I could take a Zoom meeting or two without disturbing other patrons. It's nice that the entire library isn't a quiet zone and supports this sort of thing. Of course, the wifi was easy to connect to and I had no trouble with power outlets for the laptop. It is always neat and clean and welcoming, and the displays are always fun and cute. I REALLY like that the staff are always willing to do a community outreach event and come to the local schools. Like all the libraries, I like that it has a nice selection of books and you can always transfer books between libraries if you need some thing that is not on the shelves.

The post office is past the railroad tracks, but we tooled around to check out the library, the caboose, the historic cannon, the farm house, Halligan Park and the sprawling Victorian home. But of course for me, the post office was the main attraction! Rachel, the clerk running the show was extremely pleasant and welcoming! She gave me some history of the village, telling me that there used to be a general store with a post office here! It has since burned down, but she had some vintage photos of the previous post office on the wall (see photos). She had a huge binder of collectible stamps, and I purchased about $100 worth! So many fun stamps! Even a jeopardy sheet with Alex trebeck and actual answers! I wanted some post cards too, but they were out so next time for sure!
