Yes says Post Office but cannot find category for City Of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Shanksville is Somerset County. State bird is Ruffled Grouse. State insect is Firefly. State tree is Hemlock. State flower is Laurel! State reptile is Eastern Box Turtle! It is sad that the tragedy of United Airlines Flight 93 is what put town of Shanksville on the map! I do know there are schools here. I do know there are churches here! I once before this vacation met Medical Doctor and his wife from Shanksville, Pennsylvania!

George Washington's Whiskey Rebellion was headquartered here. "The Big Coffee Pot" as it's known was created by David Koontz in 1927. It was actually once a lunch stand and after that it became a bar. It now sits on the Lincoln Highway and has become an historical landmark much like the town and the highway it sits on. The pot is a museum and it also has a little gift shop. A must-see if roadtripping through the area.

This rest stop is located in Fulton County, and a few miles east of Bedford, PA. The Sideling Hill Service Plaza is one of 17 stops along the famous PA Turnpike, which connects the state from east to west. There are currently 7 storefronts in the space, and 3 of those are open 24 hours. It includes a Dunkin', Baskin Robbins, Auntie Anne's, Sbarro, Burger King, Popeye's, and a 7-11 Convenience Store, along with Sunoco-branded gas pumps. The building itself is open 24 hours for the use of facilities and gas. As stated, there are 3 stores that are open 24 hours - Dunkin', Baskin Robbins, and 7-11/Sunoco Gas. There are plenty of parking spots here. Along with the gas pumps, there is a private parking lot on the side of the building. You will have no issue grabbing a spot just a few steps away from the entrance. There is plenty of seating, as well as other amenities, located inside. Along with traditional and accessible restroom options, there are so many tables for travelers to take a break at and enjoy their food. I would be surprised if someone visited and was unable to find a table, as there are a lot. Also, there are some massage chairs around the perimeter. I loved the fun Pennsylvania map art that hung outside of the restrooms. Below this area were several free pieces of literature about different areas of the state. My stop here was on a Saturday in September around 10:00 AM. It was not too crowded, but there were travelers both inside and out of the rest stop. None of the lines inside were very long at this point in the day, with the exception of Dunkin'. I was traveling with my dad, and we came to take a few minutes, grab breakfast, and fuel the car. I had no issues with the restrooms, as they were clean and serviceable. Next, I visited the Dunkin' located across from the restrooms. It was busy, but it did not take too long to get my food from start to finish. It was less than 10 minutes overall. They have kiosks to order from, but I wanted to use my Dunkin' account to pay, and I truthfully could not figure it out. So, I placed my order with the cashier and had no issues doing so. The quality and taste of my food was good. My dad got a Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Bagel, and I got a Large Iced Coffee. I will write a more detailed review on the Dunkin' on their Yelp page, but thought it was worthwhile to include some on this review as well. We also filled up the car with gas at the Sunoco pumps. No issues here, and all pumps were serviceable at the time of our visit. Obviously, with this rest stop being on the Turnpike, the prices are a little higher than if you went to your local shop. I did not think they were too crazy, though. This includes the gas, but that all is the price you pay for traveling this road. The Sideling Hill Service Plaza is a spacious stop along the Pennsylvania Turnpike that has a plethora of options for dining, resting, and refueling. There is a lot of seating, so it would be a good stop for groups. Plus, with so many eateries, everyone will find something they like. I will definitely be stopping back here on future trips along the Turnpike!

I had recently heard that the Somerset County Courthouse is the highest court in all of…read morePennsylvania, elevation speaking. Makes sense as Mt. Davis, highest point in Pennsylvania, lies within Somerset County as well. It is quite the beautiful building, one of the first things you see when you drive into the area, proudly sitting on top of Somerset. Listed on National Registry of Historic Places and part of the Uptown Somerset Historic District basically tells you about the age of the structure. Inside you are greeted by security guards and metal detectors like you find in every government building today. Once you pass the checkpoints you are greeted then by the grand staircase that takes to exactly where you need to be. Three courthouses are housed within; one on the first floor and two on the second floor. All three are grandly ornate and distinct from one another. The biggest of the three is magnificent. I'm no architect, but I can respect the beauty of a nicely laid out building. The staircase is made of marble and splits at mid-level. If you cannot traverse stairs, you will be able to use the elevator in the building. Bathrooms are spread throughout with the main one being on the bottom floor. Also located on the bottom floor is a room with some vending machines, if you are here for an extended period of time that is a good thing to know. Many offices are located here that you would expect to find in a county courthouse. What you can't find in here they do have an annex building located across the street. The county jail is also located across the street. Everything from criminal and civil cases to jury selection happen here. I just so happen to have had the pleasure of serving jury duty and being able to do that here made my civic duty that much easier.

I has been a few years since I stopped here last. I guess you could say that a few things have…read morechanged. From the humble beginnings of this site it has grown into a much bigger thing. Yes, for those that will gripe about this, there is now a fee to enter. $7 is not a bad price to visit. This is now a foundation that oversees the care of the site and all the artifacts housed within. $7 is a decent price to pay in order to help maintain everything. I actually enjoyed the museum part of this very much. So much better than before when you showed up and just saw some outside areas with sparse descriptions. Inside there is an ongoing expansion of artifacts that are still trying to find their spots. Yes, it does feel a bit small in here, that is until you realize there is more downstairs as well. Upstairs you will go through a bunch of stuff. Some interactive exhibits, one in particular sticks out. One where you get pick up a telephone receiver and listen to the newscast from the day. It's a bit from a documentary, so it's not the whole thing, you get a snippet. The display cases are many in here, thoughtfully put together. There are uniforms worn on that day. Lunch pails that washed away underground. Tools. Newspaper articles from across the country. Photos. The most notable item upstairs is the capsule used that day to rescue the miners. And then you go downstairs. If you want you can take in a presentation. I did not do this, I did go through the area and look at the artifacts. The most awesome thing is the news van. This news van from WPXI Pittsburgh that covered the story as it was happening. This van wasn't only at the mine rescue site, it also covered the Flight 93 crash. (A little aside here, travel the few miles and visit the Flight 93 Memorial) Then go outside, if you haven't already. Not much has changed outside. The nine trees that were planted for the miners have gotten bigger, kind of overshadowing the nine boulders. It's quite beautiful.

However, even when visiting on a weekend there weren't many interactive things to do or see besides the blacksmith who was friendly and actively working on a piece. There was no one in the tavern or cookie shop, which would have been cool to experience. When we entered the chandler house (candle maker), there were workers there but no one even acknowledged us or said hello. We were really hoping to be able to make a candle or buy fresh baked cookies as the audio guide suggested! Overall an interesting stop but would have been nice to interact more with the village.

Old Bedford Village Shoppes are part of Old Bedford Village which consists of authentic and…read morereproduced log, stone, and frame buildings that were part of the 18th century. You enter the complex via a covered bridge and then park opposite the welcome center. Admission is very reasonable and gives you an opportunity to explore the different buildings of the town as well as some of the craftsmen who operate the various trades. They have events scheduled throughout the year and during this visit my husband and I got in on a "western" themed re enactment. All over the town were costumed characters who we learned had come in for the weekend only. Co-Vid restrictions are in place. They only allow 25 people in the visitor's center and you can only tour a house one family at a time. All over the complex are picnic area as well as tent stations where you can buy food or just meet up with the people. Some of the craftsmen we got to visit included the broommaker and the mortician. Things have come a long way since the 1700s so I found it very interesting to hear their stories on how they handled their crafts or events of the period. Photo ops abound if you want to grab a picture of yourself in the stocks by the jail and what's also great is that most of the craftsmen wares are found in the gift shop in the welcome center if you want to take a freshly dipped candle, a blacksmith's creation, or even a mini whisk broom. I was blown away by one building that housed and Indian museum. It was believed that an Indian tribe may have existed prior to the actual village that the property sits on and Indian artifacts are on display. Items are also available for sale in the general store, the bakery where you can get giant size homemade cookies, as well as pottery and tin. I couldn't get over how dark the interior of most of the buildings were but those were the days before electricity so you get that authentic feel. Hosts in various buildings are on hand to explain the history of that building and to answer any questions you may have. Christ church was designed after the 1806 log Union church which we later visited in the town of Schellsburg. The wine glass pulpit sits in the center and the building can be used for weddings. The western days didn't disappoint and we got to take in a couple of shows. I loved watching the bullwhip show and their expert ability to slice paper from one's mouth. The western show was well written and very funny. Even got an opportunity to hear from "Mark Twain" in the square. Allow at least 2 hours if you want to tour the place but you could spend all day here. Old Bedford village has so much to offer and is well worth a visit to get a glimpse of life in colonial times. We really enjoyed visiting and sits about 2 miles south of the PA turnpike at the Bedford exit.

The owners were very kind and spent a lot of time with me over the phone, texting me pictures, and in person as I tested the bike. They even assembled a second bike for me on the spot so I could test a larger size. As I sat around waiting, numerous regular customers came in and each was greater by name and treated as if they were the only one in the shop. If it wasn't three hours away from DC, I'd make this my go-to bike shop!
