Front staff is super friendly and appears to be trying their best despite angry or feisty customers. Overall my experiences here has been wonderful! Lovely front staff, usually they are patient and friendly. There is a manager there, she seems serious and professional but she appears easy to get along. I highly appreciate that this post office offers services such as passport photos, money orders (cheaper than my bank), greeting cards along with gift cards, boxes, tape, bubble wrap in a small/medium/ large sized packet, a packet of envelopes, PO Boxes, and stamps behind the counter. Whoever is running these post offices in McKinleyville and Arcata should be ashamed of themselves. Your people desperately need customer facing skills. Today I got scolded for not affixing my certified mail receipts to the envelope. I told the clerk after having the cops called on me in McKinleyville, I'm scared to death to make a mistake. I've never had anyone complain about having to affix the certified mail receipts before. Isn't that part of the job? ‍ He tried to make it sound like it was policy but I'm not seeing any evidence of that. These customer facing employees seriously need to get over themselves. It was a real come down after such a great experience at Post Haste. These two post offices are in desperate need of training. But, I won't hold my breath. I've been a huge fan of the USPS for so long, as one of the most reliable and competent government institutions. In every city we've lived, this opinion has been confirmed. The Arcata USPS, however, is the absolute worst. We've never experienced so much aggressive incompetence at any place of business, and especially in contrast to most USPS locations and employees. Surly and incompetent counter workers, backed with delivery workers that constantly fail to deliver packages to their intended addresses intact. The Arcata PO, itsa post office and very busy most days. Sits on the corner of the town plaza. Lots of customers daily. Usually someone standing in line, often more. I am usually just dropping mail off so its not to crazy to get in and out of the place. The employees are for the most part okay, most are not overly helpful but you can get services if you are patient and willing to wait. The post office, the only one around and a main part of mail flow for the area. I was identified as a Trump voter during the 2016 election by Arcata pole workers who examined my ballot before allowing me to put it into the ballot box. In the current election my mail-in voter ballot was returned even though I have been receiving my ballots and all other mail including my SSI, SSA, drivers campaign renewal, auto insurance and other mail at that address for over 5 years. I am now listed as a inactive voter and have to have phone in permission from the Humboldt county registrar of voters to vote for Mr. Trump. The Arcata CA 95521 post office is engaged in voter suppression on behalf of the Harris campaine. Their is no other way to interpret this malicious behavior. read more

I got our passports done at this office, and boy did they steer us wrong. I asked if they needed the lost passport document submitted with the application, he said ehhh, they'll figure it out. 7 MONTHS LATER and I'm in a hotel in SF, ready for the last minute passport appointment, which was painfully difficult to get, and should be an all day experience, a week before we fly out. Do your own research and do not trust anything they say to you about passports, they do not know what they are talking about. read more

This post office is one of the worst post offices I've ever been to. Their workers are surly, inpatient and gruff. The actual usps deliverers are incompetent and lazy. They've actually LOST a big package my wife was expecting, after they said they were looking right at it. Often I have to go to the actual post office because either they left a package in the boxes and didn't leave a key for the box, or gave me the key with no package. As I said, incompetent. The employees in this post office is rude. They act like they really don't want to be there. At times they ignore you, they talk to their coworkers. One of the girls will talk to you like your two years old. And I just cannot stand that. They're just plain rude. I'm surprised that they're Even working doing customer service. And when you try to deal with a supervisor that's even worse. This one female supervisor is so rude and always tells people I can't help you. There's nothing we can do. If I could give this place less than one star I would. They people that work there especially ERIC and the other guy who is tall and skinny, are extremely rude, unhelpful, unprofessional, and are never paying attention or seem to care about anything. There are never enough people working here yet they have like 4-5 windows yet usually only one MAYBE two windows are open. Even if you ask a basic question like how much is a sheet of stamps or anything....he is so condescending and rude. This is the absolute worst post office I have ever been to. As a po Box holder of 10 + years there actual customer service has steady gone down hill, when I first started there, it was like most all post office locations, open 24 hours a day , but because they are lazy it now has closing hours even if you pay for service,no extra key , no service so if like me you come to the coast after 60 miles and it's a holiday of some kind,or after 6pm no mail. I recently went to potentially renew my box and the manager made me wait about 15mins before telling me, sry will not give you your mail until you give me money. So I'm not going to renew my 10 year box . If your in and out probly fine but actually helping you.... not possible. All smiles though. read more

Had a good phone call with a man on the phone told me to come in between 3 and 4 to pick up a package requiring signature, lady with the bad bleach job on her hair was extremely rude and told me that I couldn't do that, even though the supervisor told me to come in and tell them it will be in the "notified hamper". read more

The man that helped me, Eric, had the biggest attitude this morning when I was mailing things out. It wasn't even busy so I don't get why he was so upset and making snide remarks at every little thing. I was confused because I thought I had done something wrong and when I asked him if there was a problem he changed up and stayed silent. The other gentleman next to him was making weird roofy jokes talking about "can I get you a beer" "oh actually i wouldn't trust the beer I give you". They are getting one star because I don't have issues with my actual letter carrier, but the employees who work at the counter are awful, their customer service is non-existent. I went to mail a package and was excited to see there was no line, but I waited probably two minutes before the person at the counter acknowledged me and even then he sighed and said "I guess I can help you before I go to lunch". I usually go to the Bayside office or Post Haste to mail anything and this encounter just reaffirmed those as better options. I saw someone else comment how they never answer the phone and once they do they are really rude and I've had the same experience more than once. read more

I have used this post office for 25 years. People often gripe about post offices but the Arcata Post Office is very helpful. They work fast and are very nice. The negative reviews I see are from people who don't have it together. They are the ones who should get the negative reviews as customers. I have waited in line because someone shows up with an unpacked box, has no idea what they are doing, and wants the post office to be their mommy and pack it for them. Get a life! It is a very busy post office. You can tell the employees care about their jobs and are doing their best. There are lines, but that is because so many people use the Arcata post office. I went to this post office to ship a medium box of stuff. I've never mailed a box of stuff before, I've sent letters, post cards, but never a box of stuff. So I figured I'd you know...ask for help to ensure everything was correct. I walk up to the counter and a man named Brian was "helping" me. Helping as in throwing stuff at me. He asks why I didnt grab a smaller box. I tell him because I wasn't sure if it would all fit. He then grabs two large, thin envelopes as if 3 small boxed Pop vinyls would fit in there. Then gets mad that they dont fit. Grabs my stuff out the envelope, throws the envelopes and the previous box I grabbed behind him. His coworker told him to stop and that was unacceptable. Then he shoves my stuff into a medium box then throws it towards me onto the counter. Throws some tape towards me and says "close the box." And then throws a shipping label at me nonchalantly and says "fill this out" with the most annoyed and rude tone ever. I just wanted some help to ensure my package was filled out correctly. He took it to another level. I understand, people dont owe me anything, but people do deserve respect and Brian did not show one ounce of respect. The fact that his coworker had to tell him to stop was embarrassing. I would consider myself a polite and respectful person and I did not show any sign of irritation or anger towards him. I just continued to smile and fill things out as he said. The thing is, if you dont want to be there, then dont be there. Dont take your anger and frustrations out on customers who are looking for help. I understand, jobs where you interact with people are difficult and draining, but you should never go out of your way to disrespect someone. I am another person who has had mail opened by this office or the carrier. I received a large book in a Priority envelope. It was clear it was a book, because you could feel it through the envelope. Either an office employee or the carrier felt the need to tear open the envelope halfway down the side and poke and slice at the endpapers of a new book. Now it is wrecked and can't be returned. What a violation of privacy for no reason I can see. This can't be legal. read more

Some mailman just came up to me screaming about where I parked because he "needs more space to deliver the mail." There's a red line in front of the mailboxes and a driveway on the other side of my car. I wasn't in front of the red line or mailboxes nor the driveway. I was parked totally legally. I get that they aren't required to leave there vehicles to deliver mail but you don't get what you want by pulling up in front of people and screaming at them. He could of kindly expressed his problem and reasoning instead of trying to threaten me with a ticket that the police have already told him they won't give because there is nothing illegal about people parking where I was. You should teach your driver's some social skills because they are clearly inept. read more

We had the worst experience at this post office just yesterday morning. We waited in line for ages as they had only one woman working for a line of over 15 customers. When we finally neared the front of the line, help finally arrived to deal with the massive line forming. The other employee, a man named Eric, had one of the worst attitudes of anyone I have ever encountered. Of course, we were next in line and he was the one available. When we walked up to the window he sneered at us and went, "I'll be back" forcing us to wait even longer, and boy did he take his sweet time. When he finally came back he was rude and spoke so quick and low that we couldn't understand a word he was saying. Of course he was doing this on purpose to be an ass and we couldn't understand a thing he said. When he asked us a question we had to have him repeat which only resulted in eye rolls on his part. At the end of the horrible encounter we requested a receipt and he threw it at us and turned away. My package that I had paid for to be sent out still remained on the counter and I still question if he even sent it out. I never write yelp reviews but this whole experience has me peeved and this guy needs to be called out. I would avoid this post office at all costs due to the awful customer service and nasty employees (ERIC). read more

I've had a POBox for a long time ~20yrs. My mail and packages are often opened! They love getting away with saying something is "suspicious" just so they can be nosey & open your mail/pkg's. I sent pregnancy gifts, a lot of very expensive organic products & they flagged my gift as "suspicious/illegal drugs", an investigator called a bunch of my family members, my pregnant sister and aggressively busted in her landlords office. I spoke with the landlord, he said they aggressively demanded that they open the gift in front of him. They also called my Uncle, my Sister and said weird/odd things that made no sense (how they got their #'s IDK/creepy). The retail counter USPS employees that use to work there 15+ yrs ago were great, the people now are extremely weird. All the women who work the retail counter are rude and horrid personalities. The men always say odd/strange things & socially awkward. Many of them are often dirty & clothes look un-clean. Whoever is doing the hiring, can do a much better job. Low integrity. They're only nice & helpful to a certain type of person. I avoid the lobby and go to any other post office, one of the rude ladies is often at Bayside so, Eureka is my go-to unless I'm checking my pobox. My Christmas gift box from my Dad last year was opened w/ $100 money order missing from a sealed envelope that was opened. Good luck ever getting someone to answer the phone. read more

But this wasn't even just very slow service, but also unorganized, unprofessional and unfriendly. They never knew where anything was and actually gave my mail out to someone other than me. The Mail carrier won't drive up the driveway to deliver packages instead they leave a paper saying that it couldn't be delivered because as always it states not delivered because of dog. Our dog is 15 years old and never and never gets up when UPS or Fed X delivers. Last Friday I was working all day in my garage that's the same day they said that they couldn't deliver. They never even drove up are driveway we have a long driveway. This has happened so many times that I think that there just too lazy to do there job. I say because they use too deliver packages and have even given or old dog a dog treat. I would give them no stars if that option was available. read more

I put in a 6-month temporary mail forward when I moved to care for a parent with cancer. One month into the forward, my W2 was sent to my old address (though I was still receiving spam). This means my return of almost a thousand dollars was delayed by 3 months, impacting my life in a HUGE way. I had to spend $11 to order a new copy which hasn't arrived yet. They also lost the mailbox key I bought when I moved back to Arcata and after telling me to "come back" for a month, they made me pay $50 for another key to replace the one they lost. It is infuriatingly frustrating to be completely at the mercy of a post office and have no recourse. I think that's part of the problem. There's no mechanism for change, so change never occurs. I had a PO Box here for 3 years with my ex boyfriend and apparently it was under his name and not both like I thought (I mean multiple people have the same address all the time, it's very common). Well, we just learned that if you go onto the USPS website and change your address it effectively closes down your PO Box without warning (which is also weird.. what if I want a PO Box and a different home address?). ANYWAYS, my ex went and changed his USPS address and my PO Box was closed without my knowledge EVEN THOUGH I had just paid for the next 6 months. The issue here isn't this unfortunate mistake, the issue is how rude the employees were when I was going through this ordeal. I felt that they were judging me because I'm young or something... treating me like a nuisance instead of someone who CLEARLY paid for something that I will not be receiving (I even mentioned how broke I am! Still no empathy). From my point of view, I feel like I should be reimbursed or just given my PO Box back under my name. Apparently, that's not the way the computer system works... so there was no room to use our human brains and do something about it that actually makes sense. There was also no room for me to be treated like an equal human being either, I guess. Screw those people. I've worked plenty of customer service jobs including Disneyland.
