I've been trying to get my account canceled for months (due to my work schedule, I'm unable to attend and they're closed during my off time). They claim it's no problem to cancel or freeze your account at anytime. I spoke with jay back in august and he assured me I'd receive a refund, yet I never received a refund. My account was never canceled because I "didn't fill out a form"they claim they keep sending that I'm not receiving. I've called countless times at all hours of the day never to reach the receptionist. Finally.. after a week of coordinating with them through Facebook messenger and almost a thousand wasted dollars later, my account was canceled. I don't recommend this place, it's a cash grab at best. ***Edit 1 hour later*** URSA Academy - Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Ann Arbor (Owner) 53 minutes ago Charles, if we have an email from you with your cancellation, we'll refund any charge that took place after that. We have had an issue with our website not forwarding our emails. If you can forward those emails to this email address: ursareception@gmail.com , we'll get it taken care of for you. We've been in business far too long to be a "cash grab." I assure you, we simply haven't received anything from you. I'll personally be watching the email for your response. Thank you. ************** My response is : As stated, I never received a form from you until reaching out via Facebook (a week ago) and having it sent to my girlfriend's email address. So you HAVE in fact received a cancellation form, because I was just notified ON FACEBOOK (of all places) that they have received my cancellation and have canceled my account (days after sending it). They have also stated over Facebook messenger that you don't offer refunds, even though Jay gave me his word in august that I would receive one, but now you're telling me you do offer one. So it seems like I'm being lied to, and my situation is being swept under the rug. Bottom line - Jay was well aware of the situation in august (he was assigned to me after all) and instead of helping you just milk my account until I make a big deal about it. read more

The building smells great and is always very clean. The Coaches are great at instructing and the community is amazing! They don't charge for belt testing like other schools I've gone to do. Overall an amazing experience and I plan on being a member for a long time to come! read more

If you want to get your children started in Jiu-Jitsu, I'd try here. The instructors are wonderful with the kids and they offer a free 30 day trial and include a uniform. A family plan is the only thing missing from this club but otherwise it's perfect. read more

Great and serious jiu jitsu. Classes were excellent and Kris, the head instructor, was a great teacher. I would have trained here if I had more time for it. The tuition is higher than I'm used to in California, but it's probably competitive with other jiu jitsu schools in Ann Arbor. read more

Talk about disappointment... I was excited to get back into this until I was given the old bait and switch with pricing... I asked about pricing prior to going to the first appointment and was told it was $140/month. I arrived and did the tour and then was given pricing options of $2,000 upfront for the year or $145/month PLUS $495 down payment that is on top of the $145/month. But $100 off the downpayment if you sign up TODAY only. So my $140 that I was told turned into $177 avg real quick... I don't care or know if the gym is good or not, but lying to me about pricing to get me in and then trying force selling $100 off today only... These are not the qualities I'm looking for in a gym. read more

I agreed to check-out URSA with a friend who wanted to try kickboxing. We jumped on deal of 3 kickboxing classes for $19.99 that came with a free pair of boxing gloves (bring your own hand wraps if you want them). They sent us a document to read beforehand that outlined the the different punches we would need to know for class - jab, cross, hook, and uppercut. Upon arriving at URSA, the atmosphere was lively and friendly. All of the staff were very kind and personable and gave us a tour through the club. I do not have children, but they had a nice kid area that seemed quite catering to parents. This club is family owned and there is a real sense of community here. The kickboxing area was quite large and contained several freestanding bags on thick mats. What I really liked was that you don't wear shoes! The kickboxing classes were 45 minutes long and consisted of a warm-up (jogging, jumping jacks, lunges, etc.), followed by six, 3-minute rounds of kickboxing, and wrapped up with a cool down and stretches. You can go at your own pace and the instructor is very encouraging and helpful. You'll definitely get a good, solid workout! At several points during the workout, we would team up with someone else from the class and do exercises with them. There are people of all ages, sizes, and gender participating in the class. The atmosphere was very social and everyone cheered one another on - you're in it together! At the end of each of the classes they took a group photo, which reinforced the social and community dynamic. They had several sign-up deals and talked them over with us after we completed our first classes. The membership fees were on par with other boxing clubs. For those who are beginning or are curious about kickboxing, the $19.99 for 3 kickboxing classes and free gloves deal is incredibly hard to beat. It's a good opportunity to see if you like kickboxing before committing to a membership. I found the kickboxing classes here to be slightly less intense and more laid back than ones at Title Boxing, which is great for a beginners, shy folks, and those (like me) who are starting out not in the best shape. I really wish I would've known about URSA sooner. I would recommend this for anyone interested in trying kickboxing. I think it's a super-friendly and non-intimidating place, perfect for those starting out. I had a great time during my kickboxing classes and will miss the URSA family! read more

Great place I would love to go there the coaches are great as well as the people that attend I learn so much in the day I and my son was there if the drive wasn't so far for me I would go there and I recommend URSA to anyone! read more

Love this place! Challenges me and keeps me on my toes, I never get bored with the classes, they are well organized and a lot of fun!

I signed up for the 3 class deal which includes a gi to see what BJJ is about. It's a really good deal for $20! I really enjoyed the classes and got a sense of what BJJ is like. It's a great workout, mentally and physically. The instructors there seem very knowledgeable and were really good at explaining each move and helping refine the moves as we practiced. I thought they set a really good tone for the class, as all my classmates were also helpful in explaining the mechanics and logic behind each of the moves. The entire staff was very friendly and personable and cared about whether we were having a good experience and learning. Unfortunately, I couldn't continue after the 3 class deal, but I highly recommend checking it out for anyone interested in martial arts. read more

URSA Academy is a great place to start or continue on you fitness journey. I joined after I had been working out on my own in the gym. It fell into a routine and needed to do something different. I came across URSA Fitness Kickboxing and it was one of the greatest decisions to come in. I had taken kickboxing classes before in college but didn't take it as serious. I really enjoy the classes, fellow kickboxers, and the coaches. They really make all the difference, are always willing to answer questions, are very approachable and down to earth. If you're looking for something a little different and a fun energizing enviornment then look no further. Two thumbs up read more

If you want an honest review, you will get one here. URSA is the first and only place I have ever trained bjj, so I can't speak to other academies. What I can speak to is first-hand experience at URSA. I Started around six years ago, but had to stop after a couple injuries that occurred outside the academy (injuries of my own making). I have recently re-signed at this same academy because I have worked through those injuries and am able to get back at it. What I can say about URSA Academy is that it is by far one of the best decisions I have ever made in my three decades of being alive. I have always considered myself someone who loves learning new things, engaging with diverse topics, diverse people, and engaging any range of things from play to social discussions about geo-politics, really anything! I have also often been pent up in a university or academic setting for most of my life. I am about to graduate with a joint doctorate after years of degree seeking. Some of the things I have learned from URSA include how to remain disciplined. How to maintain a schedule of getting to the academy on time and getting right into the hard work it takes to learn a new art. I have learned how to make new friends from diverse backgrounds, who believe things different from me, but none of that matters when it comes to the time on the mat. Everyone at URSA is accepted and brought in, almost like a family, if not so. The focus is on whatever you want it to be. The Professor and coaches have a truly state-of-the-art curriculum that is technique and system based. One of the things I seriously appreciate about the teaching system at URSA, especially as an educator who is interested in always adapting, evolving, and scaffolding my own teaching, is that the curriculum is always adapting to the art, as bjj is a living art. So often in academia our disciplines become stagnant, or stuck in their ways - not at URSA... whatever it is you want to do, whether it is competition, learning how to develop a healthy diet or lifestyle, meeting cool new people, etc. etc., you can make it happen! Often times I've noticed places try to "sell" people on stuff.. not here. However, their apparel is super cool and their gear is mma quality stuff - so you can seriously represent. If you are looking for a place to train, work off some steam, meet new talented people, or just a new path in life, URSA Academy is the place to go! read more

Great environment for positive attitudes who want to get healthy without intimidating pressure to perform. The fitness kickboxing workouts are challenging but fun. Great for all levels of fitness from just starting to experienced. read more

Incredible place of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ("BJJ") learning and respect. Professor Kris has established an instructional and positive BJJ environment that accommodates all skill levels. Initially, I was unsure about BJJ as I am not UFC/MMA enthusiast, and my interest was limited to cross-training (I primarily play basketball and lift weights) and self defense. Yet to my delight it was an incredible work-out, and my classmates - despite tremendous ability and occasionally size - were supportive, friendly and deeply respectful of my training and pace. It doesn't hurt that the leadership from Professor Kris Magers is world-class (go ahead and google him). Outstanding community of students ranging in all skill/interest levels and the Jiu Jitsu way. read more

Have been attending URSA's Kickboxing classes for more than a year now and I'm so satisfied with my workouts. The workouts are challenging and fun and with so many different coaches and their flexible class schedule, you definitely get a variety in your workouts every time you go. read more

I attended one free lesson at URSA and then signed up for the classes. Before my first class, however, I had to move out of the country, and they refused to give my money back. In fact, while I was out of the country, they charged my account for one month of classes (even though I proved that I was volunteering abroad). They gave me an excuse that didn't make sense about this charge, and when I asked for my money back, they said there is a termination fee that this unexplained charge can cover. So, I pretty much just paid $300 for what was supposed to be a "free" lesson. read more

I trained with Professor Kris and team for about a year and it was an amazing experience. Both Kris and Amy are extremely professional and helpful and the academy has a very friendly atmosphere. The classes are really well structured and have flexible schedules. Professor Kris has a very sharp and helpful teaching style that makes you progress really quickly; I felt really motivated to go training even with extremely low temperatures of Michigan. I am Brazilian and trained in the famous Alliance academy in Sao Paulo with Fabio Gurgel, so I have some good references of what a good jiu-jitsu academy should be. Moreover, there were several workshops with the legend Xande Ribeiro (co-founder of the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu academy) and current world champion. I just left the academy because I moved to California; otherwise I would keep training with them for sure. It is definitely a family-run academy: when I was missing classes because I was studying a lot (was attending MBA at U-Michigan) Professor Kris called me a couple of times and asked me why I was not going, if I needed to change my scheduled, etc.. That really motivated me to keep training and felt well regarded by the team. 5 stars! read more
