Went to the Urban Krag for the 1st time last night after moving here and be so so excited to check it out. We had to take the Belay class and Ryan rocked it and did an awesome job teaching us. It was easy to learn and he did a great job asking all of our questions Loved how simple and easy to fill out a wavier on the tablets and they do an amazing job in these COVID times, hand sanitizers all over the place and signs everywhere to keep us thinking about others over ourselves. They've done a great job. They have many top rope climbing routes with lots of different levels, lots of crazy cool overhangs, which maybe one day I'll be able to traverse. They also have lead climbs and a great bouldering section with soft matts to move around to keep your fall and jump safe. So they have everything you need plus the tallest wall in OH of 56 feet, it's huge and awesome. It's was awesome to be up on the wall and look around. I'm not sure I've ever climbed at a more epic indoor climbing facility then this one as it's in an old church building that was for a time condemned for 30 years. They have done an superb, stunning, 1st class job or restoring the building into a rock gym. They have a viewing patio to watch the climbers down in the pit and even a small gym to do some lifting with basic weights and some grip boards to get that strength adequate for some stellar climbs. You can rent equipment there, harness and shoes and they have a shop there with some good climbing gear. You'll love Urban Krag and it's the best climbing venue by far in the Gem City region. We are grateful you're in the Dayton region Urban Krag, keep up the good work. read more

Took my niece (9) and my nephew (8) here to climb for their birthdays. It was my first time here. The gym is awesome!!! So much top rope climbing, and a good amount of bouldering too. You have to fill the waiver out online, or they have iPads to do it there. If you need to do a belay certification, you need to schedule one online before you go. Ashley did my belay certification and helped set the kiddos up with their harnesses. She was AMAAAAZING and super nice. Karl (older fellow) will greet you at the door with his shining, charming demeanor. Nicest guy I've ever met Would come back again for the gym! Great set up. Affordable prices. read more

0/5! My Aunt made a reservation for my nieces and I to climb while I'm in town visiting from Los Angeles. We were so excited to climb together. When we arrived we found out my Aunt accidentally reserved the wrong date. The older fellow working the counter treated us like a complete inconvenience even before we found out the error with our reservation. When he discovered it was my first time visiting he raised his voice at me, and was cursing. "JESUS CHRIST!" My nieces are return customers. I can't believe that's how they treat people who are about to give you their money. I told him the way he was speaking to my teenage nieces was unacceptable and that we would be spending our money some where else. I get better customer service in Compton! If I wasn't a guess in someone else's town/state I would have handled it very differently. read more

I really enjoy this gym. The staff is amazing and the owner is great! I've been reading through the past reviews and I believe many of the claims then do not apply now. I believe the climbs are fairly rated, the place is clean, and they're even going through renovations to keep the place feeling modern. I recently bought a 3 month pass to the gym and would totally consider getting a year pass. Also, the people and sense of community is nice. I've never had a bad experience. Only thing I'd recommend is more secure padding on the floor, but with such a high risk sport it's acceptable that there are just user errors. We were a group of three in town for 10 days. We are somewhat experienced, not experts by any means and a little out of practice. We looked online and read that you have to get belay tested for $3. Fine. When we arrived we were told the next test isn't for 2 hours and we have to register online. We decided to boulder only. Pros: beautiful church building with stained glass windows. Rope anchors. Cons: front desk staff member was borderline rude, clearly impatient with a friend who needed to try multiple shoe sizes, made me not want to be there. Routes seemed to go from 0-60 between V0 and V1-2. Granted, I'm not a boulderer but others who are shared this take. read more

Visiting in town for some team building training and offered to take some coworkers to do my favorite sport. The idea of a church remodeled into a climbing gym sounds amazing and really unique so I def had to try it out. Absolutely not, wish I could get my money back for the single day pass I spent. Owner was rude, not very helpful or welcoming to guests. Had issues when I couldn't get my shoe size for rentals, evolves just don't size well to my feet. Rude to my friend who first walked into asking to do a belay class and we ended up opting to boulder. Everything we asked for was a bother to the owner. Scales are ass. The routes lack any flow or sense. The grading is way off and honestly just way too congested for bother boulder and top rope. Not to mention dangerous. The padding were not well put together as a few times my foot slipped between cracks. Not worth twisting an ankle over. Glad I didn't take my entire team here, honestly embarrassing. read more

I went to this climb center establishment to ask and obtain information about the services offered and upon approaching the front door, I started talking to a man and young child about this place and before I could here there answer, they were suddenly pushed through the door and a man told me to go away. What‍? Was this mans problem, then when I tried to ask him a question , he basically shut the doors in my face. He was rude, extremely rude, I was considering, a membership, and a birthday climb party for my granddaughter, but I will never subject any children to such rude behavior in any pay established place. My son and I started climbing here a few months ago with no experience. The staff has been extremely kind and helpful. It is a very welcoming environment, not just because of the staff, but the customers as well. We have met a lot of great people there that are always happy to help or give advice. Yes, Karl gets grumpy when you forget your card, but don't forget your card!! He is a nice guy and so is the staff. Climbing can be a dangerous sport with deadly consequences, so I expect a certain level of discipline and rules to be followed. Down the street from Wheat Penny, this place rocks! It's not very big, but has everything you need for a rock climbing gym. Recently, they repadded all the floors and have the latest equipment. If you forgot how to belay like me, they have a certification class with amazing people. You have to take the class or get certified in order to be in this gym. There is also a small weight room, but that is for members only. At first, I was a little intimidated with all the "professionals" around me, but the staff are so friendly. It is totally worth the experience. The first time we came here, they also offered us the full week to come back for free. This is a must try if you are in the area. read more

Unfortunately it's the only gym in town, so you're kinda stuck having to go here. All the problems are not properly rated (5.5-5.13) they're just lazily marked beg or int (+/-). All the staff are really cool except for the owner!! This dude just wants your money and doesn't care about your experience. They charge you for every little thing from forgetting your membership card ($1) to getting belay certified when you already know how to do it without classes ($5). Also, for any military out there don't be fooled by getting their annual membership if you think you'll be PCSing before it expires. This awful owner will charge you $100 for an early termination. I made the mistake of asking one of the workers, "if this is waived for military orders" and she said, "yes". Turns out she's wrong. The owner gives no f*cks about the military. Bottom line, don't come here if you're expecting to get that laid back supportive community feel you get from other gyms in the country. read more

Unfortunately I was only able to see the gym, not climb in it. Based on the policy that the two girls at the front desk kept alluding to, my wife and I were expected to not only pay $14 to get in, but another $3 to get belay certified, even though we were only going to boulder. We didn't even bring our harnesses. On top of that, my brother-in-law was going to have to pay a total of $30 for admission, the belay class, and the belay test. My efforts to explain that we were only going to boulder was met with responses that were apologetic but unhelpful. One of the girls explained that since Urban Krag is a smaller climbing gym, they don't offer boulder-only admission. This was an illogical argument, since my relatively large home gym doesn't either. Instead, you pay a flat fee to climb, can pay for and take a belay class if you want to, and can take the belay test for free. Having traveled an hour from Greenville, OH, to get to Urban Krag, I was extremely disappointed to walk away without getting a bouldering session in. Management needs to adapt and change their policy or else run the risk of turning away potential customers. I won't be recommending this gym anytime soon. read more

The facility itself is great. Very cool environment, challenging and varied climbs available. Upscale equipment. It would be nice to see at least 1 Auto belay so you could climb without a partner. They are understandably very concerned about safety. Taking this seriously is important and not taken lightly. The stern attitude toward certification can be excused. The negative: Karl: As the owner, he cultivates a negative energy around the gym and staff. Too often everything you do there feels like an imposition or a money grab. You do not feel like a valued customer at any point in any way. One example, you become a member but are charged $1 for not carrying your card. My 11 year old son LOVES to climb. he is interested and excited to hear and learn more about climbing. During our last visit to UK it was $24 for him to climb for 1 hour. We had already previously paid our membership fee and belay certification (seems very pricy). Toward the end of my son's climb we asked Karl questions about the ratings posted on each route (there are 3 on each path). He appeared to be annoyed that we were talking to him and gave a terse "if depends on your feet". I asked a follow up to try to clarify for myself and my son how to interpret the information but got no better explanation. Perhaps I'm too much of a newby (We've been climbing for almost 2 years, probably 50+ total days) but how is anyone, much less an 11 year old, supposed to move beyond without some guidance? Then after we returned our equipment we asked about an upcoming climbing tournament that he had a poster for displayed on the wall. He shared that the tournament was in Columbus so he didn't know anything. We asked generally how a climbing tournament works? how would my son get involved? What is the format? How long do they take? Anything he can share??? We were told "it just depends" but you should probably buy equipment. Maybe he is completely stressed out and trying to grab every dollar he can get, but I believe that giving his customers a more pleasant friendly experience would benefit Karl financially. His attitude and approach to customers wears off in the fear that you sense from the other staff at times, but the night and day reviews here indicate that if you judge it based on the location and the fact that there aren't other options then sure, positive. This was my first time rock climbing in an actual rock climbing gym, and I haven't done it in years! It was a very tough, but extremely fun workout! I am already making plans with my bestie to go back ASAP! Everyone who was working was very nice and helpful, they were always ready to help when I had a question. Before you are allowed to climb, you must take a class that teaches you how to belay others who are climbing and properly tie knots to ensure that you are safely secured on your rope! You should definitely give Urban Krag a try if you are interested in rock climbing! read more

Certain areas of the facility become very congested very quickly. Vast majority of routes do not make sense. Overall Urban Krag is managed terribly. If you have the ability to use another climbing gym I would highly recommend that you do so. read more

Had heard there was only one climbing gym in Dayton so I checked google for the hours and it listed that the gym was open from 5-10 on Monday evenings. An old church turned into a climbing gym? Sounds awesome. So I drove an hour from Cincinnati to check out the gym and meet up with an old friend who is stationed in Dayton temporarily. Well apparently the gym has members-only days and even though they are listed as open you may not be permitted entry. I get it, lesson learned. I should have done research into the company before driving an hour to climb (though I've never been to a gym that is unwelcoming to visitors). Well this gym was very unwelcoming. There was not a single person in the entire gym except the two people working the counter and they turned me away and told me if I paid $83 for a month membership($63 + $20 startup fee) for both me and my friend we could climb in the cult. I don't know how business models are designed these days as I work in health care, but I'm imagining this one gets by on having no local competition. The girl and old guy working the counter were both rude and made it seem like they did not want any guests for whatever reason. They made me feel stupid for expecting to come to a welcoming environment and were not at all understanding of my misinterpretation of their hours. I have an active climbing membership at 3 climbing gyms in Cincinnati and I've never experienced anything like this. I will definitely be spreading the word through my southern Ohio climbing community to steer clear of this gym. Will not make the same mistake twice. read more

I've climbed at quite a few gyms and feel like I have a good idea about what a typical and good rock gym should be. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about this gym is the rating. Instead of using what they consider the "confusing" Yosimite decimal system, they have created an indeciferable, made up scale for boldering and top rope. Also, route setting is poor with lack of flow and good moves. The overarching theme is that this is run by people who are not knowledge about the sport. Atypical and unnecessary safety requirements and set ups also detract from the gym. But alas, it's the only local gym so you're stuck with it. Employees and other clients are great they are usually helpful for those new in town but don't expect to climb without being charged an arm or leg from the owner. Dayton's only climbing gym has a few cool things going for it, and then some practices I find 'meh'. First, the location and architecture of the gym is fantastic. Situated a short walk from main Oregon district, Urban Krag has transformed an old brick-and-mortar church into a local climbing hotspot. Climbing here gives you a cool vibe as you look up in awe at the original wooden rafters. But if you are not an engineer nerd like me, you will at least appreciate the height of the top rope routes, which are just shy of 60 ft. I will get the bad out of the way because it bothered me enough. I enjoyed the gym overall, kudos to the layout and vision, but the management seems a little penny-pinching. First, you can't enter the gym without a belay test. If you don't know how to belay, they will teach you for $15. Not an issue here, I can appreciate the desire to reduce liability and paying for a class is reasonable. However, they charge $3 to be tested even if you know what you are doing. I've climbed at gyms all across the country and have never seen that. Even worse, you have to test every 2 yrs, another thing I have never experienced elsewhere. What really irked me, however, was their ID cards. They give you a small bar code to scan on future visits. If you don't bring it, they can look you up in their system (takes about 15 seconds. Most gyms do it without batting an eye), but Urban Krag charges you $1 to do so or $2 to make a new card. I realize none of this is egregiously expensive, but climbing is supposed to be a laid-back, supportive community. Seeing these practices left a foul, corporate taste. I can accept all the hidden fees and charges from an airline or a rental car company, but I'd rather not get them from my climbing gym. Now that I've covered that, onto the actual climbing facility. The total SF isn't huge, so I could see regulars running out of routes. I'm only visiting, so I can't vouch for their route turnover, but regularly changing routes could compensate for the small climbing area. Just a consideration if you are planning to get a membership (Ive gotten tired of similarly sized gyms because of this). They have made some cool wall surfaces (slab, overhang and a small arch). Like a few other gyms I've seen, they also have made their own rating system: beginner (5-8) intermediate (5.9-5.10) and advanced (5.11-5.12). This is a personal preference, but I'd rather see places stick to established grades. Yes, I understand the reasoning. Ratings are subjective and can be confining, but 3 categories seems too broad for me when I'm not climbing in a comp. If you are just starting out or are a casual climber, this rating system should be well-suited for you. The routes themselves were alright, both top-rope and bouldering. The holds were all a little slimy, but the moves had good flow and moderate creativity. In all, I really enjoyed my time at Urban Krag, but I would have reservations about becoming a member if I lived here. It's definitely still worth a periodic visit. read more

A great hidden gem. It's a old church that they turned into a climbing building. It's fun to be able to climb to the top of the walls and be bathed in light through the stained glass windows. To start, I have never been so appalled by a business or restaurant to go online and write a negative review, until now. I hope this review helps others and prevents you from having a similar bad experience that we had. My friends and I decided to tour several different climbing gyms around the midwest for our spring break vacation (we have been climbing for about 4 years and are graduates/students at OSU). We live just outside of Columbus and called UK a day before we planned to visit to ensure the hours of operation and ask about their belay certification policy. The prices are listed on their website as $12 for a single day climbing pass. There is also a one time $15 belay certification fee- the website states if you have experience and don't need trained, it's only a $3 fee. The day before we went, I called and briefly talked to a guy on the phone; I told him we are all experienced climbers and have our own gear. I told him we would be coming in tomorrow (3/23/11) around 3:00 and just wanted to verify we would only pay the $3 belay fee, not the $15 certification test fee. The employee told me sure that would be fine as long as we can demonstrate we know what we are doing. So the following day the 4 of us took the 1.5 hour drive down to UK. UK is located a few minutes away from downtown Dayton in an older historical part of the city (has a similar atmosphere to the German Village in Columbus). The actual facility is built inside of an old church. We were very excited to walk inside and see the long climbing routes extending up to the top of the steeple. We went to the front desk to check in and pay. There was only an older guy named Karl working at the desk. I told him that we are all very excited because this is our first time visiting the gym. Karl didn't say hello and was tinkering on his Macbook. He barely even took his eyes off the screen to tell us belay testing only takes place on Thursday-Sunday, so we can't climb today. Confused, I tried explaining that we just called yesterday and made sure it would be fine to come in today and pay the $12 + $3 fee to climb. He told me he remembers the phone call and talking to me, but he said he didn't hear me say we would be in on Wednesday. I kindly asked Karl if we could maybe talk to a manager or someone to see if he would understand our situation and let us take the test to climb since we drove all the way out from Columbus. Karl was still working on his Macbook and didn't take his eyes off the screen and said there is nothing we can do besides come back later. He said the website clearly states it. Aggravated, but not wanting to give up yet, I asked Karl if we could still boulder without belay certification. He said that is allowed. I asked him if we could briefly walk down to the wall and check out the bouldering area before we made any decision. He said we cannot walk down the stairs (to the climbing wall/bouldering area) until we pay $12 each. At that point, I said thank you for the help, but we don't want to climb here today and walked out. We then decided to drive another hour away to RockQuest in Cincinnati, where we ended up having an excellent time. Ironically enough, almost everyone we talked to at RockQuest had something negative to say about Urban Krag and why they never climb there. Karl is apparently the owner of UK and has a bad reputation of being rude and not helpful. Overall, I was very disappointed in the management (Karl) from UK. The actual facility might be nice, but I recommend others to not support a business that has rude and disrespectful staff members, especially if it is the owner. RockQuest, located only 45 minutes away, is a much friendlier and significantly better overall gym in almost every aspect I can think of. I hope this review helps everyone and isn't too negative. I have been going here for a few years. The owner is not welcoming to new climbers and is often rude to members. My last experience there was bad. The gym was crowded and an experienced climber loudly griped about the crowd size. He began climbing across the bottom portion of the gym (traversing) with his partner WHILE patrons were making attempts to climb up the wall. He griped when he had to wait for us to begin our climbs and made climbing over him nerve wracking and unsafe. My 7 year old watched this and began to do the same. The manager told me to have him stop. He was embarrassed and began to cry. This had been a regular and bonding parent-child activity for us. He said he didn't want to go back again. On the way home, he told me he was doing what the man who was climbing underneath us had been doing. Rules did not seem to apply to him because he seemed to be friends with the manager or a regular climber. We had been going because it was the only climbing gym in the area. I ended my membership this week. I was not asked why. The owner was curt as usual when dealing with my cancellation. The manager was once friendly and helpful but now seems stressed and short tempered. I can't begin to describe how rude the owner is. He does not seem to love his business and acts irritated if anyone asks him for help. I used to regularly recommend this place to people and I often brought new climbers along. I have been climbing here for about a year. The current staff is ok, but most of the more experienced setters have left since I started climbing here so the routes really don't make sense anymore. I've met a lot of friends here, but the owner is a complete jerk. He just wants your money and he acts however he feels like because this is the only gym in Dayton. You don't have a choice but to climb here. I would not recommend getting a pass because you have to pay $100 for early termination, even if you're injured or in the military. If you already know how to belay and have experience climbing, you still have to pay for certification classes and pay a $20(?) startup fee IN ADDITION to a pass. The owner has yelled at me multiple times in front of the entire gym and is very petty. I'm not the only person he has done this to. He seems to have something against anyone who isn't a pro climber. Honestly, just get a punch pass and then try and find somewhere else to climb regularly. It's worth the drive to not have to deal with the owner, and the routes don't make up for his bad attitude anymore. read more

I've been to Urban Krag twice now. The first time I went, my friends and I took their class to learn the ropes and how to do everything (our first time rock climbing). The whole package was $36, and we could stay for as long as we wanted. When you go there for the first time, you get a free week membership. So, we went back the next weekend, and had a blast again! The staff there both times were very nice and helpful. I would love to back again, and can't wait to go! If it wasn't for the drive (it's about 45 mins. away from me), I'd look into getting a membership. read more

I had an extremely disappointing experience at Urban Krag. My boyfriend and I had been talking about going rock climbing for a month, so when I saw a Groupon for half of climbing at Urban Krag, I immediately jumped on the offer. There was one contingency: it was for first time visitors only. I remembered that I went there once with my brother, probably over 7 or 8 years ago, so I made the mistake of thinking that it would be no big deal. My boyriend and I tried going on a Tuesday, about an hour after they opened. When we got there, the owner, Karl, said that he wasn't used to being busy after New Year's (but you had a Groupon that hundreds bought?), and that there wouldn't be a staff member to assist us for another hour. We decided to come back another day since we had other plans. Well, a couple days later, we went back and filled out our waivers. Karl scanned our groupon. AFTER he scanned the groupon, he said that I wasn't a first time customer, so I couldn't use the groupon. He said that both my boyfriend and I had to pay the full rate. My boyfriend has definitely never been to urban krag, so I asked if he could still get the discount and if I could pay the difference between the full price the groupon. He said sure, and then proceeded to accidentally charge my card $322! What?! He credited my card. At this point, I was getting really upset. Karl then correctly charged my card the difference which was $23. During the entire interaction, Karl was extremely rude and accusatory towards me. My boyfriend and I finally got our equipment and a staff member was taking us downstairs to get set up, but I was so upset that I started crying. I decided that I didn't want to climb anymore and just wanted to leave. We got the $23 refunded, but the $36 groupon was nonrefundable. So, $345 of charges were pending on my card for 4 days. As a college student, I was counting on having access to that money for my books at the beginning of the semester. Because I had to wait for the refunds to be credited, I was put in a bad place of attending classes without books. I understand that I was in the wrong for using the groupon out of the terms, but you would think that the owner would be more understanding and not so rude. He's lost 2 customers permanently. At first I thought this would be a great place to get strong for climbing trips to the red and out west. However after talking to the staff with little or no out door experience. I was slightly disappointed. I was able to test for free to top rope. I eventually got the opportunity to test on lead, the owner failed me before I even started which really pissed me off, all because I never took his lead class. Which cost $ I don't want to spend. So I quit going there screw him he will not get another dime of my money. And I hope more people quit tolerating his poor costumer service. The guy is a jack off prick to the highest order. I climb at the mad river it's free, and I prefer it to the gym. Real climbers are out side and don't charge $ to hang. You will learn a lot more outside. There is nothing that comes close. I started in the desert not the gym. I will show anyone how to climb outside for free. As long as they have respect for the risk and reward. read more

This climbing gym has a wide variety of runs, which get changed fairly regularly. Most of the folks working there are very helpful. The middle aged gentleman who's usually at the front desk used to be fairly unwelcoming, but lately he's actually greeting us when we come in, maybe someone spoke to him. There's no gravel anymore, the entire floor is soft padded carpet, very nice and no more clouds of dust! Our only complaint, which is sometimes pretty bad, is that when that same gentleman is working, he steps right outside the door to smoke. Well, you can almost always smell the cigarettes inside the gym, but when the door is open and the fans are going, it's downright gross throughout the gym. We hear people complaining about it ALL the time. We're there to workout and stay healthy....it's more than a little frustrating to be assaulted by cigarette smoke in the climbing gym on such a regular basis. We've talked about calling ahead to see if that guy is working and not go if he is....it really is that bad.
