It's a well known fact that the hours before midday and coffee were made for each other (well I definitely think so anyway!). I decided that today I would try out the Urban Coffee by the clock tower in the Jewellery Quarter. The place has an almost hipster/East London vibe with exposed brick work and street art on the walls and fixtures. I sat back and listened to a few Pink Floyd tracks, quickly finishing off my pretty much perfect skimmed hazelnut latte. My only pointer is that the staff don't always remember to stamp your loyalty card. When the coffee is as good as this it would be a real shame to not get a free drink occasionally! Before I left I had a quick look at the breakfast menu, it seems reasonably priced and full of healthy options. Expect another visit and a review asap. read more

As I live in the JQ, Urban Coffee is a favourite hangout. The industrial but comfortable surroundings lend themselves to a creative business meeting or a lazy morning. The coffee at Urban is pretty good, not the best in Birmingham, but better than most. The selection of cakes on offer varies, but will leave your mouth watering (even if you aren't hungry). It's a great location to sit and watch the world or just chill out with a good book. *Top tip* The Urban put on seasonal events including book and film clubs, so keep an eye out on their schedules. This particular branch is situated in the Big Peg, so full of interesting and creative types all through the day. read more

Urban Coffee Company is a great little independent coffee chain in Brum. The Jewellery Quarter location mirrors the rustic/loft/minimalist look of its Church Street site just with more books to browse and read whilst you're there. They also feature local artists' work on the walls. Whilst the cakes look good they don't offer any gluten free options and so the food and treats are a no go for me. I like and support its indie nature rather than always giving my coffee fund pennies to the bigwigs but I'm not a fan of the standard blend they use at all, which makes my lattes a disappointment. When you see your latte as a treat you want it to taste divine. I often opt for the hot chocolates because of this and whilst they are thick, creamy and deliciously chocolatey I feel like I shouldn't have to make a point of asking for it hot but if I don't it tastes more like chocolate milk instead. Lots of people love Urban Coffee, sadly I have to defer to the bigwigs on this one. read more

Service is always top notch, lots of regular friendly faces. We tend to come here on a Saturday morning for a quick brunch after the gym. We always seem to get a table but it would also be nice to sit outside in large groups but this isn't offered. Being a coffee shop i think they need to improve on the quality of their coffee as for an independent retailer its not the best. So some room for improvement there. Brunch is great and really good value for what you get. but having said that i have had better food at other establishments. Lovely atmosphere, great front windows letting in lots of light and sunshine. also the free reliable wifi is always a plus! read more

After an hour of window shopping in the famous Jewelry Quarter (window shopping only guys) a nice fresh coffee is just what is needed. This clean, bright and open space welcomed us in and sat us down. Very simple. The Urban Coffee Company is about Coffee. Coffee, tea and jummy looking cake. My latte was the easiest thing to drink. Beautifully presented, lovely big and milky saucer of coffee. Yum. In all honesty I don't go out for coffee that much. But if I'm going to get a brew in the JQ then I'll head over to Urban (then usually onto the RVT for a pint). Practically the whole frontage is windows so it's the perfect place to while away a couple of hours over a fine coffee and watch the world pass by in the JQ, or just to shut yourself away and read a book in a nice, light, airy environment. The staff have always been super friendly whenever I've been in, and the prices are pretty darn reasonable. The food looks amazing too, I've only ever had their cakes (which are delicious) but their range of hot foods and salads look great. The art on display changes regularly and is, more often than not, from local artists and most (if not all) pieces are available to buy which, in my opinion, is a great touch. Unfortunately the view out onto Warstone Lane is currently marred by the building site for the regeneration of Golden Square but once that is done (hopefully this year) then the view from the coffee shop will be lovely. I hope to see some tables and chairs outside as well when it's all complete, a nice coffee and a cake on a Saturday afternoon in the JQ sounds like just the ticket. read more

I have been here a few times and the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere always makes me feel welcome. This is the kind of coffee place you can stay at for a couple of hours, reading a book off one of their bookshelves, playing a game of twister (!!) part of a board game selection also off their bookshelf, or watching the world go by their glass fronted entrance. I recently came here with fellow Yelpers to try out their new brunch menu. I ordered the sourdough toast with scrambled eggs with a side helping of mushrooms and it did not disappoint. The toast was lovely and buttery - just how I like it and the dish filling. When the weather is fine, its lovely to sit at one of their tables outside and catch some rays. It's much more than a coffee house & a little sister to the original @UrbanCoffeeCo in CBD (Colmore Business District). Firstly they have a kitchen where the cakes for all 3 Urban locations are baked by Beth but also where the Urban legendary breakfasts are freshly created. The favourite has to be any number of Egg Benedicts, almost enough for 2 people but there's also mushrooms on toast and sausage & onion sandwich or bagels. All washed down with your choice of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, chai or juice. But as with Urban 1, there is so much more. The wonderful film nights happen on the 3rd friday of each month providing entertainment, excellent value and a great atmosphere. Plus th co-working even Jelly is run here every month, a whole host of one-off events plus there is every changing artwork from local talent on the walls. Urban Coffee - yum yum yum. (A theme which seems to accompany most of my reviews?!) I love coffee. I love cake. Both are here in abundance. Having worked in the Jewellery Quarter for a few years now, I've been dying for someone to open a coffee shop over here as it felt like the one thing that was missing. And better than any Starbucks or Costa, along comes Urban Coffee! Hurrah! Flat white? Yes please. Cupcake Friday? YES please! (Unless I'm doing healthy eating... zzzzzz!) Massive glass floor to ceiling windows letting in copious amounts of natural light (when it's not raining and grey)? Absolutely! Heavy wooden tables and free wifi? YES so no need to feel trapped in the office all the time. Thankyou Urban Coffee Co for raising the bar (the beverage bar?) in the JQ. I've visited this coffee shop several times and on each previous occasion, I've fell into the bosom of their comfortable surroundings. In addition, to being happy with the consistency of the service and quality of food and coffee. On this occasion, I was greeted by the most miserable face. Obviously, I'd caught her on a bad day but when times are tight, I felt my £2.50 had gone to waste and I'd of been better off staying at the old fashioned 'greasy spoon' cafe next door where I had the best breakfast, value for money and above all, service experience. Coffee, helps me stay awake and keeps me going. Those that know me, know that I'm addicted to that taste of caffeine; therefore I have to at least have 3 cups of coffee a day. Now, with me I'm not too fussed where I go to get a coffee but over the years I've developed an understanding of where the best coffee is made and Urban Coffee is one of those places in Birmingham. I mainly go to the one on Church Street but have recently been in the Jewellery Quarter area, working; so I've popped in a few times to the Urban Coffee shop near the Big Peg. It's not just the coffee now I'm in love with, I'm loving the hot chocolate they make too- the staff always make sure it has a lot of coco on mine. Plus, this is going to sound a bit weird but I do like the little leaf pattern they create on all their hot drinks, it's just a little something special! My only thing is, I would like a better cake selection; I never seem to like the one's they have :( Also, does anyone have the app on their phone? I downloaded the Urban Coffee Company app on my iPhone, which means you can order your lunch, drinks through the app and pay for it too- it's absolutely fantastic. I think for me that's what make them great because they've developed a coffee shop brand which communicates great with it's customers. read more

I've never had the pleasure of enjoying a drink or a meal in Urban, but my office regularly orders coffee to go from here. Their hot chocolates are beautiful - rich and creamy. I'd strongly recommend their lattes, however their Americano can taste burnt on occasion. I'd love to see the day that they introduce sugar free syrups! read more

I'd been to the Church St and the Harborne Urbans before, but I have to say I think this one is my favourite. Nice, spacious eating area with a mix of seating options (sofas, chairs, giant bean bags) with loads of light coming through the front windows. Add yummy tea, coffee and cakes. Brilliant. Food is generally quite (really!) expensive, I have only tried the cake, which was good. The chilli brownie is the stuff of legend, but I'm happy with sponge cake really. I'll be back to try a brunch though, the menu sounds tasty and it's a great location for those who work in the Jewellery Quarter. Oh, and free WiFi, no password required! read more

Floor to ceiling windows, light a plenty, tasty cakes, delicious food and, as they say themselves, some of the best coffee this side of the moon, all makes for a great coffee shop experience. Situated right in the heart of the thriving jewellery quarter, it can get very busy here, though with friendly staff and clientele, table sharing is often an option if need be, and in my experience, you don't have to wait too long for a table most days. Being a regularly at the monthly Jelly that's held here, I do find it to be a pleasant working environment, though on a sunny day, visibility can be a fun balancing act, depending upon where you are sitting, as screen glare becomes a major issue due to the gorgeous floor to ceiling windows. The food here is great, with hot brunches, freshly made soups and delicious sandwiches on offer, all at great value for money, it's a great location for lunch, and also an ideal environment for meetings, as there's a real creative vibe there. Urban has an older sister on Church Street in the city centre, and whilst undoubtedly cut from the same cloth, they both have their individual characters. The JQ branch also does a great movie night once a month, which makes for a quirky and unique film viewing experience. A great little gem, and a regular for me! read more

I've been to the branch in the business district and had my brother not shown me I'd have never spotted the branch here today. I had a cupcake and a chocolate milkshake which were both very nice. There was a queue and the two staff were working pretty swiftly. But on a beautiful day there were more customers than I presume would appear on a normal Friday morning. The staff were very friendly. This place has white painted brickwork with red strips. Chunky wooden tables and wooden seats with some sofa seating too. If I'm down in the area soon I'll return to try something else. Currently they take C/cards for over £5 or A money phone app called Droplet which seems to be based in Birmingham is also accepted here. read more

This Urban is fantastic, yet another brilliant independent coffee shop in the city. The coffee isn't the best in the city, nor is the food, but they are better than the chain coffee shops. Urban have lost their edge, it is not as driven as it used to be and it shows. However, this shop makes up for a lot of problems with its Church Street sister - accessible toilets, comfy atmosphere, has air conditioning. If you are in the JQ it is worth a visit. I like the idea you can pre-order using their iPhone app, so no waiting when you arrive. great for on the go. read more

Since I moved from Bo-ho-Mo or Bohemian Moseley for short, to the relatively conservative JQ some 10 months ago, I realised, on my first real look around the area I had been spoiled for choice when it came to good coffee shops. The JQ it seemed has only a handful, a childs hand at that. So, it was a massive relief that the Urban Coffee Company, the biggest and best is the only one, one needs. I first sampled it's delights in early Spring and noticed immediately that the huge floor to ceiling windows gave the interior a really nice organic light. on entering you are naturally guided towards the huge serving area and greeted with a great selection of attractive, homemade cakes and pastries, a huge chalkboard boasting a large selection of coffee's, teas and specials and your ears are caressed with tasteful, modern background music. Coffee doesn't agree with my stomach but I still enjoy the smell but I did enjoy their peppermint tea; good quality bag in a decent sized cup and reasonably priced, I did need to ask them to top it up a bit though. The seating area is a mix of sturdy, light wood chairs and tables, smaller arm chairs and 2 adult sized Bean bags which fold out in to a bed! My friend and I actually fell asleep on them, they were that comfortable and the atmosphere is so relaxed. I am not sure of my compass points but it seems to have all day sun pouring through the windows and a few chairs outside make it a real sun trap, when we're lucky enough to get some. My only real niggle is the fact they only have one small toilet available, which means you have to time your run a bit to avoid an accident after all that liquid refreshment. Other than that, I would say the service is fairly friendly, although sometimes on the 'too cool for school side' and they have a good selection of drinks, snacks, sandwiches and juices. Some nice touches are their little library of paperbacks and a good selection of papers. I believe you can order on-line but i haven't tried that yet so can't comment Overall, the local art on the walls and the handwritten signs around the white minimal decor gives a modern, contemporary feel to the place whilst retaining a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. It's a great place to meet friends as it's easy to find and with the free wi-fi a nice place to work, or just sit and people watch during the lunch time rush. An extra toilet and a little bit more warmth from the staff would make this a 5 star review! read more

I've changed my mind on Urban JQ since my prior review. Not sure why but the coffee consistency is now suddenly very good - 5 out of 5 very decent flat whites and all with decent latte art (not important but if it's done then do it well!) Also, met a friend for lunch yesterday and while previously I'd avoided food here due to a couple of pretty dire quality experiences of a few years back I'd now rate it excellent. It's still pricey but no worse than similar places in Brum. My only remaining grumbles that keep it from a 5/5 are the music/noise levels, which sometimes are too much for chatting reasonably with people, and the inconsistent wifi. read more

Not a big visitor to Hockley- ok, shoot me- but having ventured out of the city centre, this little place has found a fan. Huge windows but still cosy, lit with imaginative tape cassette lamps and walls adorned with some great art (all for sale and should be seen to be believed) Urban Coffee Company in the belly of the Big Peg was a lovely oasis of chilled calm. I actually felt I could comfortably write here- which is an important feeling for me. Hot (soya) chocolates were buttwarmingly delicious and to my further delight they played decent jazz! Sign me up!! Will definitely be back to raid the rest of their sweet treats and hot seats. read more

The only place I don't have to ask for my coffee to be made extra hot it just comes extra hot. Today I also had breakfast and enjoyed sausage bacon sourdough it also came with tomatoes. I have to say the bacon was well cooked and the Cumberland sausage was just delicious and at £4.25 worth every penny. read more
