Being in Birmingham at the moment is incredibly exciting. There seems to be a great new business popping up every week in the City, but this one is a biz I sincerely hope gets the traction it deserves. Have you driven down Bristol Road lately? As it's a major route out of the centre, I'd been past Quarter Horse a few times before I had the chance to go in and check it out. The shop units down here have recently had a refurb and the area is now picking up with great businesses moving in. I'd heard about Quarter Horse before it opened. The main reason is the excitement around Birmingham's first coffee roastery. With the huge selection of independent coffee shops in the City, it was about time that we had a business to supply locally made coffee to them. With this in mind, I popped down on a Thursday evening to have a nose. I got there at 5:45 (considering it closes at 6pm) and wandered in to a friendly greeting. The unit is huge! The roastery will be on the left hand side of the shop (and, I imagine, will make the place smell amazing) and the counter for drinks is on the left. There are seats at the counter, in the middle of the shop and towards the back. In the summer, they hope to take over a little of the outside area (so you can enjoy your drink in the sunshine). I ordered an Americano (reasonably priced at £2) and had a natter with the new manager. The Americano was good... Not too bitter, but nice and strong - a perfect pick me up after a very long day. The whole menu is about on par with what you would expect to pay for a coffee shop in Birmingham's centre. As well as coffee, they also have a selection of loose leaf tea available all priced at £2.20. They currently offer a selection of cakes, but are hoping to offer more food once they have gauged the customer base and popular hours. I didn't end up having a cake, but I will in the future (as they all looked delicious). Only time will tell if these guys build a loyal customer base in their slightly awkward "out of the city centre" location, but you can bet your bottom dollar you'll find me in here at least once a week in the future.

I liked this new coffee shop a lot! I went in on a sunny day for coffee and lunch and was greeted by a bright, clean store with delicious looking cakes and sandwiches on display. Quarter Horse Coffee is just along the road from the Pagoda roundabout, so it's a few minutes walk out of town, but definitely worth it! I liked the clean, cool interior. Lots of people were working at laptops and there was a mellow atmosphere. I chose a flat white and a parma ham, parmesan and ceaser dressing sandwich. The flat white was perfect and the coffee was rich but mellow- not bitter. Now I'm not usually a sandwich person but this one was absolutely beautiful. It was toasted and served with a little side salad which was a nice touch. After that I couldn't resist having a cake so I went for a slice of chocolate and beetroot, which was soft and moreish. I'll definitely be back. I can't wait to see the roaster in action too.

Coffee addicts visit here now! I always past this little hide out on my way to work , happy to finally tick it off my brummie bucket list. So why should coffee lovers here? Well it's one of the very few places in brum where the coffee they use is also roasted here! How awesome is that? The Informative and trained baristas are always here to welcome and give advice on which blend to go for. After you have decided this the second har part is to decide which cake to go for. The décor is simple but of course very Instagram worthy, get your phones out and choose a a perfect filter for that cuppa They offer FREE Wifi , woop! When you have enjoyed your brew and feel that you want to take that experience home, no problem, you can also purchase the quarter horse blend home too, with a few sizes to choose from. I had a lovely latte ,Yeah I'll be back again to try the other blends Have a good day everyone, thanks a bunch for reading

This little bit of Bristol St is becoming a bit of a hipsters paradise ( that's no bad thing in my book...it's better than the glut of fried chicken shops). We needed to buy some fresh coffee so decided to head to Quarter Horse coffee after sampling their home roasted brew at the independent Birmingham food Fayre back in September. We found the owners to be personable and it encouraged us to visit them at their cafe despite being a little too far from the JQ for us ;) There is parking out the back though! We opted for a double shot latte ( well we were pretty shopped out), a tea for me ( total coffee wuss) and a peanut Oreo brownie ( which I didn't need, but I was seduces by the low prices - only £2.20). The bill was £7 Ish and I could have saved myself 10% if ind remembered to use the Independent Birmingham card. Our drinks were brought over at speed and we found a cosy corner in this large urban coffee shop venue. There is free wifi if needed and i found it would be a good space if you need to do some work (especially now the large Yorks is shut). The coffee was very tasty, and one of the best in birmingham. My tea was loose leafed and in a small teapot - delicious & the brownie was thick and peanuty but not too salty ( I wrapped half up to bring home) We decided to buy some coffee to take home which had been roasted there - £8 for a bag, with £1 off with the IB card. Great little experience and look forward to getting more stamps on my reward card!

This is officially a very cool place. The decor is super on trend, the coffee is good and best of all they roast their own beans on site. The staff are really friendly- coffee pro Alex really knows his stuff. They even do an espresso flight! It's a great spot for a meeting or a gossip with a friend when you want to guarantee a seat. The only downside- it's a little walk out of town, but at least you can earn some cake to go with that coffee!

I just asked for a simple salad!;)

Popped in on my travels between gig ticket buying sites as I needed sustenance. It was quite busy, which was good to see as it's not particularly on most people's routes. I do however think it's worth making the effort to head over there! I asked for a quinoa salad but the guy said as it was so warm in the shop that is wasn't good enough, so he made up a feta salad for me instead-delicious! I paid £4, which was ok. Staff we friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed:) next time maybe I should actually buy one of their coffees!;)

    Serious machinery here.

After my stay in the Ibis hotel this is just what I needed! I took the dodgy looking subway underneath the ring road and wandered down the row of shops (need to have a proper visit to JamJar lights) and wanted into Quarter Horse Coffee. This place, along with JamJar stick out like a sore thumb here because they actually look good on the outside. The cafe itself boasts a bean roaster on an industrial scale, it's quite impressive and when I'm not carrying my life around in a gym bag is something I need to buy and drink at home. I usually order the same thing everywhere, the flat white; because 1, I like it. 2, it's a good comparison point and 3, any coffee shop that tells me to "order a latte because there the same" gets black listed immediately. After ordering I was invited to grab myself a glass of water from the watering station, something that's refreshingly popular in this day and age. My coffee was brought over to me, upon inspection I've had better 'looking' coffees and hotter ones at that but it was at the perfect temperature to drink there and then. I'd hope if you were taking it out they would initially make it hotter.

There's a whole bunch of exceptionally good coffee places in Birmingham now and quarter horse coffee is one of them! One similarity between all of these coffee houses is the passion and drive of those working there. Just ask one of the baristas more about the cafe or coffee they are making as it usually speaks for the overall place itself. Quarter horse coffee is a independent cafe. Half of the cafe houses a huge coffee bean roaster which fills the store with a beautiful aroma most of the day. They also sell coffee beans both online and in store. The coffee in this place is exceptional. I would recommend a visit just to to sample it. They have a whole host of different coffee beans they can use and are willing to give you a rundown if need be. The cafe also offers cakes and brunch. Everything is sourced locally. They usually have a gluten or wheat free option available with the cakes too. This particular time I had sourdough with crushed avocado and chilli flakes. It tasted great and was filling! For the price of £4 I think it was great value! If your looking for a chilled cafe just on the outskirts of central Birmingham this is a great choice. They don't have seating quite as loungy as some other cafes but you can still get some work done or whatever for a good few hours. If you also like good coffee this place is a must!

I often passed this place, but this is the first time I've paid a visit, its fairly new and it's located on the Bristol Road. Although a walk of a couple of hundred yards or so from the corner of Queensway, and Bristol street therefore a little out of the way for many people, hence why it's not as busy but this coffee place was very much worth the effort. It's in a newly refurbished unit, actually a two units knocked into one so its light & spacious. The room is large, airy and light, very relaxing, vibrant, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The aroma of the roasting coffees hits you as soon as you walk in and then the coffee itself is strong, flavoursome and perfectly presented. They have a coffee roasting machine to roast their own brand and the freshly brewed coffee. There is a good choice of tables, chairs and armchairs and overall the atmosphere just could not have been more relaxed and pleasant. They also do some wonderful cakes and snacks.

Minimalist surroundings and a deep coffee. Love the industrial style of this coffee shop, up to and including the massive coffee roaster that is proudly on display (and used) at one side. It's a cool calm place with lot's of space, a very high ceiling and gentle music, ideal to escape the busy streets, especially to get some work done. Coffee is excellent, not super strong as seems to be the trend at the moment, but still full of flavour. There are a selection of cakes which tend to be a little different than the usual fair, they even had crème egg brownies for a while over Easter (if you could get one, they do seem to sell out of food throughout the day). They also offer a selection of good quality savoury options.

I really enjoyed my first visit to Quarter Horse. It is a lovely, clean and open space with wooden chairs and tables. The staff are really friendly and I was very impressed with the options available. I visited for breakfast and had the toast (with crusty bread from Peel & Stone), two whole pieces with jam. I had the iced chai which was yummy and then tried the cold brew coffee as well as there salted caramel cake. The cake was very tasty and flavoursome and a good portion for the price. Very impressed and shall be visiting again soon.

Came here with a coffee obsessed friend. He went for a fruity coffee and I had a good old cup of tea. We were both very impressed with the selection of coffee which is all roasted by them. The impressive equipment on show really impressed my friend and gave him a little geekgasm. The service was very good and they told us all about the different types of coffee on offer. A very nice place all together and next time we'll try the food too.

That's what I call real hot chocolate! Hot chocolate with almond milk! Yum! Awesome non-dairy options here! :)

When I first started with Yelp, I threw this question to the masses; "Where is the best tea shop in…read moreBirmingham?". One of the first recommendations I received was the Edwardian Tea Room. Now, I have always known this place existed - but never had a chance to visit. This was finally rectified last week. The Edwardian Tea Room is housed within the fantastic Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (on Victoria Square). You need to head in the building, up the stairs and through the shop and the Buddha exhibit to find it. Decorated beautifully, the tea room really does feel like you've stepped back in time. No music plays in the background, but you can hear the murmur of conversation, the scraping of chairs along the floor and the clanging on trays as the staff clean up the empty tables. The menus are displayed on the wall (rather than individually on tables). You need to head up to the counter and order before you find a table (although if you're in a group, you would do well to bag a table first). The Tea Room (as you would expect) has a large selection of cakes (and tea, of course). A slice of cake and a pot of tea is a bargainous £2.95 - meaning it's a wallet safe alternative to some of the more hipster coffee and tea shops in the centre of town. Again, as previously mentioned, it's very popular with an older crowd due to the prices. However, on my visit their were older visitors, young people and families (who were catching their breath after trekking around the huge museum). I grabbed a herbal tea (£1.60) and took a seat in the large room to do a little bit of work while I enjoyed my hot drink. As well as tea, coffee and cake, there is a varied menu on offer for very reasonable prices. A large fish and chips (with all the trimmings) and a cup of tea was around £7.50. Not too bad, and they offer many other hot options too. Even on my many trips to BMAG, I haven't ever taken the opportunity to visit the Tea Rooms. Following my trip last week, there is a good chance I'll be back JUST TO visit the tea rooms.

It's not a particularly fancy afternoon tea but it makes a lovely lunch. The highlight here is really the space and the atmosphere- definitely worth spending some time in.

This place was a lifesaver during my 6 weeks training with Fit Body Bootcamp. As most of you will…read moreknow, I am out and about in the City every single day. As part of my nutrition plan for Bootcamp, I had to stick to a strict diet of healthy proteins, fats and carbs all day, every day. As much as I like to pack my own lunch, some days this just wasn't do able! No one wants to be that guy who takes their own food into someone else's venue (especially not me), so I was severely limited as to where I could go. If anyone has any "Birmingham Independent Salad Heroes", I would love to hear them. Most of the salads available in coffee shops and lunch spots have lots of crouton's and things on, taking them off the menu for a low carb diet. I was literally stuck and the only place I could think of going to get my lunch was Pret. Now, I don't really have a problem with Pret. I would always prefer to go independent venues as and when I can, but these guys are ethical with their food waste and offer a filter coffee for 99pm (which puts them at the top of my chains to visit). Two days in a row I ended up grabbing my lunch from here. Their salads are really good. I'm not normally one to spend £5 plus on a salad, but with a choice of avocado, prawns and tender stem broccoli (with a menu that changes daily), they top the list of delicious salad options on New Street. On both occasions I grabbed my lunch and sat in the large upstairs area to eat. The first time was around peak lunch hour, so I ended up sharing my table with someone else (about 1pm). The second visit was just after 2pm and was much more chilled and less busy. Again, I wouldn't say this place is a must-visit. It's the same old Pret food and service you are going to get at any of the stores in the chain, however, it's good food and a convenient location. You could do far worse!

Fresh and tasty food. I come here from time to time for breakfast or brunch. Their sandwiches are…read morevery good with a wide variety of choices especially if you come early in the morning. There are many branches scattered all over the city even in Birmingham airport. They have fresh juices, which are also very good. I had the apple and ginger shot which was very refreshing. The following day I had the carrot juice, also very good. What I like about Pret A Manger is that they keep bringing new varieties and they seem to read your mind, whatever you think of, they bring it!
