I feel like this review is long overdue. I love supporting other local businesses and prior to discovering Uptown Color, I was unfortunately using FedEx Office for all my print jobs. In my experience, it's always a headache when using big chains for printing because the service is so inconsistent. Just like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get due to the turnover that most retail chains have. One employee at FedEx might be fantastic, and the next time you go in they are gone and you have to deal with some grump or noob who doesn't know what they are doing or doesn't want to be there. And having a FedEx Business account means basically zilch. Thankfully, I found Uptown Color almost a year ago and I've been using them for my business ever since. The service has been consistently great and I appreciate their responsiveness and quick turnaround. My experience at Uptown has been a 180 from FedEx Office, mostly due to the fact that they provide you with a designated account rep so that you are able to establish a longterm partnership with someone who remembers you and knows your needs instead of having to start over with someone new each time. These are the only printers I will ever use! Their quality and speed was better than Fed Ex Office, at about half the cost, on a project I needed printed twice. Of course there were last minute edits and they make it really easy to get a proof and resubmit if everything doesn't look just right. I have used them for conference flyers,my save the dates for my wedding and some corrogated plastic signs for another event. I will definitely be ordering more from them. Also I don't know of this is on purpose, but they use very minimal packaging which is really nice of you have to travel with your project. You don't have like mountains of boxes and plastic to try to throw away, which I really appreciate. read more

Best print shop in town, hands down. Super friendly employees, quick turnaround orders, AND high quality print jobs? That's like, a holy trifecta right there. Not to mention, the price point is amazing too! I've used Uptown for many print orders in the past 5 years. I've used them more frequently for my new job this year, and the employees here are always super professional and get our orders done right. Any poster, menu, handout, or business card I've gotten printed here has had awesome, vibrant colors, and their 120lb glossy paper is adds a great quality to any print project. I love how they cut your prints for you and you receive them in a neat shrink wrapped stack. I also REALLY try not to send in same day orders, but in a pinch, these guys have came through. That's so awesome. It's always nice when you have a reliable print shop that you can count on for literally any sized print job ever. I wish I supported these guys more when I was a VCU student from '07-'11 [I usually went to that GDES lab in the Pollack Building]. I want to love Uptown Color, really, I do. They have all the right ingredients for a great local business, but I get increasingly frustrated with their service. I've frequently used Uptown for promotional materials, posters and such, and at first they were pretty great. I got a quick price quote, and then received an e-mail when my projects were ready to pick up. What a breeze! I foolishly thought it would last forever. Now, I feel like I have to hunt down Uptown to find out when and if my orders are ready. I e-mail my orders in and no one replies to them. Once, I called for a status report, and the order had been ready for two days and no one called to let me know. Other times, I've called a week after placing an order and it still hasn't been run. Is it that hard to let me know, "Yo, your posters/flyers/etc. are ready?" Am I asking too much to be given a heads up?! The products themselves are good, with fair prices, and the people seem friendly, but the disorganization and lack of contact with customers drives me crazy. Granted, I'm not doing multi-thousand dollar big ass project orders, but I shouldn't have to throw down tons of cash just to get a little attention. I wish I could recommend Uptown to all my friends, but I always get left with a bad taste in my mouth, which is more disappointing than anything else. read more

I was really hoping this spot could be my go to place for printing copies of my larger art pieces. Nope. I got my first prints back and the edges of the canvas showed. It was like the piece flared out. I also was supposed to receive a text telling me when my item was finished. I had to actually call them a day later to see if it was ready or not. They kept my artwork and I would expect them to match the color but that wasn't true either. I appreciate that they gave me a CD of the scan but my newer Macbook Pro doesn't have a CD drive, it would be nice to have the option of an email or SOMETHING. I tried two print shops in the same day and this one didn't meet my demands. I can't sell my prints in this condition, I'm truly at a loss. The front desk lady told me that customers could just cover the edges up when matting it. How am I supposed to market that? I can't. Also yes the colors were different but it's like the contrast was set to high because the actual canvas lines were really dark as well. I'm sending the scan to the other print shop form that same day, they were cheaper and did better prints. I'm really upset about this. read more

I'm a small business owner so I have worked with uptown color multiple times and they are always so helpful. They are quick and everything that I have picked up from them has been very high quality. Their staff is amazing and everyone that I have encountered has been wonderful to work with. Just today I emailed them about an order that I had placed and the paper color that I selected just didn't look right to my client. This was totally MY fault and they were able to do a quick turnaround and get the prints fixed for me within hours, my client was so impressed that I was able to get them fixed so quickly. Uploaded my info on 8/22. Their website gave me the option of picking up the proof on 8/24 @ 5:30 pm. I called 8/24 @ 2:30 pm to follow up since I hadn't heard from anyone with confirmation. I also called to ensure they had all the info they needed to have the proof ready today. Tim answered the phone...and Tim is rude. Tim's first question was: What paper gauge to you want? And what gloss spec? I responded with "card stock & matte finish". I then quickly asked, if these were questions you needed to do this, why hasn't anyone called me to ask me? Tim's response..."I was going to in the next hour." Tim then told me I couldn't come in at 5:30 today because that's when they close. My response: your website says and gave me the option of a 5:30 pm appointment. Tim said he would not honor this time slot and asked when I would be willing to reschedule. My response: any day after 5pm. Tim's response, "well that's not going to work." My response, "well let me look into an alternative vendor. Please cancel my request." Tim's response: "okay". Not an "I'm sorry for the inconvenience" or "since our website said 5:30, we can honor that"...nothing. Tim doesn't care about his business. Tim doesn't care that he comes across as a completely UNINTERESTED in his customer's needs. Tim is a BAD employee. Uptown Color should consider this as a poor example of customer service, and a truly bad first impression. Good luck with that kind of business model! read more

Foy years, Uptown Color has been my go to place for printing. They have given me good, fast service at a fraction of the cost elsewhere. Last year, I printed my book at another place in Richmond and ended up paying 250% more for the same job than I paid Uptown when I needed printing the updated version (no fewer pages, same quality paper, same type of bonding, etc). Walked in this morning to get business cards printed up. Front desk lady was very unhelpful, bordering on rude. I have been getting my cards printed here for years, like the past 15 yrs. so they have my card on file. I needed a couple of changes, like to add a website & take my phone number off. Lady says "nope can't do that". What do you mean? I ask. She says they don't do any layout at all. Really? They can't take a line off my card & add another? I thought it might be nice to do business with a local vendor but either they are too busy for new customers or just don't care. I waited at their entrance area for five minutes and staff repeatedly made eye contact with me but no one walked over from their elite backroom hideaway to help me or another customer. They are also nicer and more knowledgeable. As I type this, I'm in the shop after hours waiting while they finish my print run -- I need it by tomorrow, so they stayed late to get it done. I can't rate the quality of the work, because we didn't even get that far. I went to their website and clicked on the big "Request a Quote" button. I provided all my info, uploaded a copy of the file, and was supposed to get a quote in 24 hours or less. Never happened. I emailed them to ask about a quote - got an auto reply and never heard from a person. Tried REPEATEDLY to call the main number on the website, and each time heard what sounded like someone picking up the phone then just background noise and no one said a word. Impossible to contact them - guess they don't need the business. I'm happy to go somewhere else. read more

They lost my original art. Three of my original art pieces that I spent hours working on were lost. Can you imagine? I left them there, as anybody would, to get scanned and prints made. I got the prints and luckily received digital copies, but somehow the originals were misplaced and never found. The worst part of this ordeal was the rudeness of management in dealing with me. I had to make all the necessary phone calls, and when I finally spoke with upper management I was treated poorly. There was zero empathy toward my situation. Not one "I'm so sorry this happened." They DID pay me for my lost originals. They were not happy about it. It's a shame because the prints they made were great and I thought the prices more than fair. The guy at the front desk and Brian the printer were quite kind, but the owner (Jeff) placed blame on everybody else and asked that I not come back to use them, as if I would. I still can't comprehend how a) they lost my artwork and b) they couldn't offer me a kind word and apology. read more
