Made an appointment with a barber on their website, came in and was told somebody else would be cutting me. The barber who cut me proceeded to finish the cut and style without even asking if it looked ok or not. I was concerned about how it turned out but he insisted that it looked good. Disappointed. Not a great experience overall. read more

Zane is extremely professional and has exact standards. He cut my partner's hair and it's never looked better!

Thank you so much, Shika just leaving the barbershop at upper Montclair. I haven't been pampered like this at a barbershop last time I remember never!! lol amazing people thank you so much. You have a client for good. Shika read more

I've been going to Amer for years....always smiling, with a kind word and a wizard of the scissors. I literally sit in the chair and he takes care of the rest....no need to go to any other barber, period! read more

I've been having my haircut by Amer for years. I commute into Manhattan daily and have my choice of any barber in the city or locally and Amer is the best by far. read more

Amer is awesome and I always get a great cut, he's a pleasure to work with. Whether drop in or appointment they're easy to work with. My family and I have been going here for over two decades. read more

Very happy with the services offered under the new ownership. Staff are friendly, courteous, and professional.

Easy book online option or just walk in. I've been coming here for about 2 years now ever since I've moved to this part of town. It's a solid old school spot and they know what they are doing. Great cut at a fair price. This place has been open for decades and they only have 30 reviews on Yelp. I'm thinking it's because most barber shop patrons go by word of mouth and when they find a spot they like, they like to keep their wait times to a minimum. So I'm sure i'm shooting myself in the foot a little here by throwing out a 5 star review but these guys deserve it. Solid spot. read more

I walked in for a shave. The barber had an attitude and I should have left but needed to get cleaned up. They took a couple phone calls during the appointment which I didn't mind, it could've been an emergency. What was unprofessional was being rushed out of the chair when another walk in came in. I was charged $35 for a shave that looked like it'd be done with a butter knife. I then went to Montclair barbershop on Bellevue Ave and they were friendly and at the top of their game! read more

Good job from Dennis and Sean. Competitive prices in what is becoming an overcrowded Barbershop Market read more

They messed up the back of my head and the front and the sides and now it looks bad and it's so uneven. This made me so mad.

Today was my 3rd time at Balonze and it will be my last time. I always bring my son who is 6 years old and myself to get our haircuts. Dennis and Amir are great - nice guys and great cuts Celeste - not so much. She has a really bad attitude and just a nasty demeanor to customers. I will no longer support a business who allows their workers to treat their paying customers like crap. She is in the service industry yet it seems like a chore for her to do her job with some of the worst manners and treatment of paying customers I have ever witnessed. read more

Classic barbershop, and not a salon. There are kid friendly chairs too! I have followed Celeste here, and it is a much better setting than her previous place. Highly recommend getting your haircut and shave by Celeste. read more

I was very satisfied with my haircut. Barbers were professional and listened to exactly how I wanted my haircut. Easy booking options either on their website or myBARBERapp. Plus they take walk-ins too. Highly recommend this barbershop and will be back! read more

Great barbershop to go in the Upper Montclair area. Quick and efficient , yet very detailed work. My boyfriend had a great time and I did as well, waiting for him. I can tell how hard the employees work on making the shop as comfortable for you as they can. We will definitely be back. read more

I have been going to Balonze Barber shop for some time now.. The haircuts are consistently good, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the area is great, and parking is never a problem. There is metered street parking, as well as a large metered parking lot behind the barber shop. I get a traditional haircut (short on the sides, and parted up top) accompanied by a straight razor shave. Never had a problem with either. read more

I called and got an appointment at 415; walked in at 412, told the barber I was there for the 415. There's one guy in the chair, a walk-in hanging up his coat, who got there seconds before I did. When the barber was done with the guy in the chair at 415, he takes the walk-in over me, even though he knew I had the appointment. I said, I have an appointment, buddy, what's up with that? He said, Relax, this guy won't take long. I walked out. Wow. You take a walk-in over an appointment during Covid, you don't get my business. Take a hard pass, try Bellevue barbers in Upper Montclair. They honor their commitments. read more

Extremely satisfied with my haircut and the service this barbershop provides. My new go to spot located in Upper Montclair.

Best barbershop in the upper Montclair area. Quick and convenient haircuts with quality service.

Usually go to Tito but he doesn't work there anymore so I went to a new guy and received the worst haircut I've ever gotten. Besides that, nice guys. If anyone finds out where Tito moved to, let me know. read more

Got my haircut here about a week ago and I'm STILL impressed by it. I was in town getting breakfast with a friend and my hair has been bugging me all week. My boyfriend suggested Balonze because that's where he gets his and I decided to see what's up with it. The barbers there are very nice and friendly. I didn't catch the name of the guy who cut my hair, but he knew exactly what I wanted. I love my new haircut even to this day. And they also do a nice straight-razor finish on the back of your neck to make sure it stays smooth and nice. I was kinda nervous because I've seen Sweeney Todd a bunch of times but it added a nice touch to my hair. Granted the wait time was little much, but it was around lunch time for them so I'm not gonna chastise them for that because the haircut was phenomenal. read more

January is phenomenal. Her chair is all the way at the back end. I watched her cut two men before me and she was so good that I actually let her cut and style my hair the way she wanted to from an idea she had. Needless to say, it was perfect and it was my first time there. I went back recently for my second cut from her and she was equally flawless. In fact, she remembered me and what we had done the first time. Don't shy away from a woman with clippers. This woman is as good as any barber out there, if not better. She pays attention to detail, works fast, and makes no mistakes. Two people had cut my hair over the past 10 years, so you can imagine my fear. Not to mention, I am extremely picky and demanding when getting a hair cut. Well, I wish I had gone to her long ago. read more

I got a great haircut here. I liked the guy who cut my hair. He was nice. He was fast. He was good. I think they only take credit cards. They are open 7 days a week. M-F, they open at 8. If you are looking for a barber, I would highly recommend this place. read more

Had an awful experience there with my two year old son. Cuts are hit or miss, so I asked for a specific barber who had done a good job with my son before. To my total disappointment and shock, he was very unprofessional and even rough to my son. He didn't talk at all to him and disregarded when my toddler extended his lower lip and turned to me. He just snapped a couple of "I need him to be sitting up here" and started holding my son's head in spite of him getting more and more upset, to the point of screaming. Exactly the opposite of what we had with him the first time, when he was chatty and seemed to be good with kids. My son has never fussed to have a haircut - but this time he felt a little scared. The guy didn't do anything to help. Mid cut, with my very easy toddler screaming, I told the barber "I think he needs a minute". His answer was "I don't have a minute". He said he had to be somewhere at 5pm, when the barbershop closes, and that he had to give another man (who got there AFTER us) a haircut. I would have been fine with him telling me, before we started, that he couldn't give my kid a haircut today (even though there was like 40 min. before the shop closed). But being short with a customer, specially a little kid, is beyond unprofessional. Now I have a kid whose hair is all chopped up. And, worst, who's not willing at all to have a haircut. He kept saying "man cut hair Juju... no" afterwards.. Thanks Balonze for the crappy, possibly traumatic, experience. I should have listened to my husband when he said the vibe there wasn't good (sour barbers bad mouthing customer in front of other customers). Or to my 5yo who had asked a few minutes before her brother sat for a haircut "why are all those man so serious?". I've posted my experience in our local facebook pages and was surprised to learn that several other people have had bad experiences with kids' haircuts there - at least two other moms reported leaving mid cut, like me. The vintage chairs can be cool, but we expect skilled, professional and cordial people for such a personal service. Neither my husband or sons will be going there again. I definitely don't recommend this place. read more

I went here today and was surprised to say the least. I showed a picture of what I wanted but I just got something entirely different from the barber (Vera). read more

If you'd like your kid to end up with a mullet or a cut so horrid that friends ask if he got ahold of some scissors, by all means, go to Balonze. Otherwise, steer clear. I took my 3-year-old there and told the stylist I wanted a trim. She promptly chopped off most of the hair on the top of his head in one chop. But there's more! When another customer walked into the store mid-cut, she took my son off the chair and said, "can he wait?" We then had to wait with my 3-year-old's hair half cut for someone else to finish up. In the end, he looked like a freak of nature. And it cost $18. He could have cut his own hair better than these people. read more

It really depends who you get. Watch out for one barber (shaven head with tattoos on his arms) --he's not so good and doesn't listen to what you want, but others are fine. If you need a cut for an important event, and don't have time for it to grow back in when they mess it up, I would go to a real stylist. Theresa at 2nd Floor Hair Cutter on Watchung, or Rich B at Bangz. read more

Got there @ 9:40 full house .. sat down waited like 2 minutes .. next thing I know one of the female stylists asked if I was ready I looked down the row and said what about them.. she said they are waiting I said OK .. I'm very finicky about people that cut my hair and watched her the whole time .. my father worked as a barber in his dads shop and used to cut my hair as a kid .. I have to say she did a very good job hopefully next time I need a trim she is there.. forgot to ask her name ... read more

Stopped by yesterday for a cut. It was about 9:30 am, the wait was four deep and only 1 barber was there. He said the other barber wasn't coming in until the afternoon. Ummmm, NEXT! I'm not waiting an hour for a freaking haircut. I jumped in my car and hit another barbershop where more than one person works. Can you give negative stars? read more

Bring my 3 boys here - all different hair types and preferences in style. Always look great!

Son had last haircut there after all staff left. There was a large bald spot left on my sons head that was just combed over instead of disclosing what had happened. My normal barber had left and I was told they had no idea where he went. Thankfully I found my Barber after searching on my own. I'll never return again. Now go to montclair Barbershop found my barber read more

I'm new to the area and tried Balonze off of a recommendation. The hours are great. They are opened on the weekends including Sundays which is great for anyone working longer hours during the week. John gave a great cut and was very friendly. Would go back. read more

I went here for a few years and almost always saw January, who is great at giving me haircuts. I called today to ask for an appointment and the man who answered the phone was visibly perturbed at me for asking for her and flippantly told me she doesn't work here anymore "bro". I don't get haircuts often, so how was I supposed to know that? (Protip: I wasn't) Safe to say I wont be going back as every other haircut I had received there that wasn't from January was rushed and incredibly shoddy craftsmanship. I'm trying out Montclair Barbershop down the street today and I have high hopes. Balonze must be doing pretty well if they can afford to be rude to long time, high tipping customers! read more

I liked Larrry, the previous owner. Good old fashioned haircut. They knew how to give you a fade. Short on the sides and keep a little on top. Shave around the ears and the back of the neck. Casper was there as well. Now I go in there and I wouldn't trust them to shear a sheep. Got one of the worst cuts I've had in years, and it ain't that cheap. Go back to old school beauty school if ya ask me. I'm talking about one barber in particular. Maybe I just got a bad one. read more

Excellent place. The haircut was great and the attention was very professional. I'll definitely come back.

I've been getting my haircut here for 2 or 3 years now, and I've gotten a consistently good haircut. I tend to stick with one of their barbers, but I've gotten a haircut from them all and it's always good. They take their time to make sure you get a good cut, and they'll shave your neck with warm shaving cream and a straight-edge razor. It does get busy on the weekend, so go in early. During the week I've been in and out within 15 minutes. I highly recommend this place. Standard cut is $18, cash only. read more

It does depend who you get. My son was getting his haircut and we asked for it to be short on the sides and just a LITTLE off the top. She continued cutting, almost on autopilot, until the top was much shorter. The barbershop wasn't as neat and clean as it was a year or so ago. read more
