The barber who cut me proceeded to finish the cut and style without even asking if it looked ok or not. I was concerned about how it turned out but he insisted that it looked good. Disappointed. Easy book online option or just walk in. I've been coming here for about 2 years now ever since I've moved to this part of town. It's a solid old school spot and they know what they are doing. Great cut at a fair price. This place has been open for decades and they only have 30 reviews on Yelp. I'm thinking it's because most barber shop patrons go by word of mouth and when they find a spot they like, they like to keep their wait times to a minimum. I walked in for a shave. The barber had an attitude and I should have left but needed to get cleaned up. They took a couple phone calls during the appointment which I didn't mind, it could've been an emergency. What was unprofessional was being rushed out of the chair when another walk in came in. Today was my 3rd time at Balonze and it will be my last time. I always bring my son who is 6 years old and myself to get our haircuts. Dennis and Amir are great - nice guys and great cuts Celeste - not so much. She has a really bad attitude and just a nasty demeanor to customers. I will no longer support a business who allows their workers to treat their paying customers like crap. She is in the service industry yet it seems like a chore for her to do her job with some of the worst manners and treatment of paying customers I have ever witnessed. read more

I have been going to Balonze Barber shop for some time now.. The haircuts are consistently good, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the area is great, and parking is never a problem. There is metered street parking, as well as a large metered parking lot behind the barber shop. I get a traditional haircut (short on the sides, and parted up top) accompanied by a straight razor shave. Never had a problem with either. read more

I called and got an appointment at 415; walked in at 412, told the barber I was there for the 415. There's one guy in the chair, a walk-in hanging up his coat, who got there seconds before I did. When the barber was done with the guy in the chair at 415, he takes the walk-in over me, even though he knew I had the appointment. I said, I have an appointment, buddy, what's up with that? He said, Relax, this guy won't take long. I walked out. Wow. You take a walk-in over an appointment during Covid, you don't get my business. Take a hard pass, try Bellevue barbers in Upper Montclair. Got my haircut here about a week ago and I'm STILL impressed by it. I was in town getting breakfast with a friend and my hair has been bugging me all week. My boyfriend suggested Balonze because that's where he gets his and I decided to see what's up with it. The barbers there are very nice and friendly. I didn't catch the name of the guy who cut my hair, but he knew exactly what I wanted. I love my new haircut even to this day. And they also do a nice straight-razor finish on the back of your neck to make sure it stays smooth and nice. I was kinda nervous because I've seen Sweeney Todd a bunch of times but it added a nice touch to my hair. Granted the wait time was little much, but it was around lunch time for them so I'm not gonna chastise them for that because the haircut was phenomenal. read more

January is phenomenal. Her chair is all the way at the back end. I watched her cut two men before me and she was so good that I actually let her cut and style my hair the way she wanted to from an idea she had. Needless to say, it was perfect and it was my first time there. I went back recently for my second cut from her and she was equally flawless. In fact, she remembered me and what we had done the first time. Don't shy away from a woman with clippers. This woman is as good as any barber out there, if not better. She pays attention to detail, works fast, and makes no mistakes. Two people had cut my hair over the past 10 years, so you can imagine my fear. Had an awful experience there with my two year old son. Cuts are hit or miss, so I asked for a specific barber who had done a good job with my son before. To my total disappointment and shock, he was very unprofessional and even rough to my son. He didn't talk at all to him and disregarded when my toddler extended his lower lip and turned to me. He just snapped a couple of "I need him to be sitting up here" and started holding my son's head in spite of him getting more and more upset, to the point of screaming. Exactly the opposite of what we had with him the first time, when he was chatty and seemed to be good with kids. My son has never fussed to have a haircut - but this time he felt a little scared. The guy didn't do anything to help. Mid cut, with my very easy toddler screaming, I told the barber "I think he needs a minute". His answer was "I don't have a minute". He said he had to be somewhere at 5pm, when the barbershop closes, and that he had to give another man (who got there AFTER us) a haircut. I would have been fine with him telling me, before we started, that he couldn't give my kid a haircut today (even though there was like 40 min. before the shop closed). But being short with a customer, specially a little kid, is beyond unprofessional. Now I have a kid whose hair is all chopped up. And, worst, who's not willing at all to have a haircut. He kept saying "man cut hair Juju... no" afterwards.. Thanks Balonze for the crappy, possibly traumatic, experience. I should have listened to my husband when he said the vibe there wasn't good (sour barbers bad mouthing customer in front of other customers). Or to my 5yo who had asked a few minutes before her brother sat for a haircut "why are all those man so serious?". I've posted my experience in our local facebook pages and was surprised to learn that several other people have had bad experiences with kids' haircuts there - at least two other moms reported leaving mid cut, like me. The vintage chairs can be cool, but we expect skilled, professional and cordial people for such a personal service. Neither my husband or sons will be going there again. It really depends who you get. Watch out for one barber (shaven head with tattoos on his arms) --he's not so good and doesn't listen to what you want, but others are fine. If you need a cut for an important event, and don't have time for it to grow back in when they mess it up, I would go to a real stylist. If you'd like your kid to end up with a mullet or a cut so horrid that friends ask if he got ahold of some scissors, by all means, go to Balonze. Otherwise, steer clear. I took my 3-year-old there and told the stylist I wanted a trim. She promptly chopped off most of the hair on the top of his head in one chop. But there's more! When another customer walked into the store mid-cut, she took my son off the chair and said, "can he wait?" We then had to wait with my 3-year-old's hair half cut for someone else to finish up. In the end, he looked like a freak of nature. And it cost $18. He could have cut his own hair better than these people. read more

I went here for a few years and almost always saw January, who is great at giving me haircuts. I called today to ask for an appointment and the man who answered the phone was visibly perturbed at me for asking for her and flippantly told me she doesn't work here anymore "bro". I don't get haircuts often, so how was I supposed to know that? (Protip: I wasn't) Safe to say I wont be going back as every other haircut I had received there that wasn't from January was rushed and incredibly shoddy craftsmanship. It does depend who you get. My son was getting his haircut and we asked for it to be short on the sides and just a LITTLE off the top. She continued cutting, almost on autopilot, until the top was much shorter. The barbershop wasn't as neat and clean as it was a year or so ago. read more

I am not one who typically writes reviews, but felt compelled to tell my story regarding Balonze's Barber Shop, and my barber Vera. Finding a place you can trust to cut your hair can be a scary task. My uncle owns his own barber shop, and had been cutting my hair my entire life (38 years free of charge). I had never let anyone else cut my hair, however it was getting to be a hassle having to go out of my way to get to his barber shop. Even though I was getting my haircuts for free I decided to give a local barber shop a shot. In doing some online research I came across Balonze Barber Shop which is very close to my home, so I decided to go for it. One thing that I was very impressed about was the fact that they have multiple barbers which makes the wait time very minimal. The other great thing is that they are open seven days a week. My first haircut was given by a women named January (no longer working there) which I thought was pretty good especially being as nervous as I was trusting someone other than my uncle to cut my hair. When I went back for my second haircut a few weeks later it was done by Vera, because January was not working that day. No offense to January, but I am so happy that she was off that day, because that was when I was introduced to my new barber for life, Vera. I have been going back regularly for the last year and a half and I always make sure to wait for Vera. Even if there are others also waiting ahead of me for her I still wait to have my hair cut by her. She knows exactly how I like my haircut and does an amazing job every time. We have great conversations, and I consider her not only to be my barber, but she is also now my friend. She is truly a great barber and someone you should feel comfortable trusting to cut your hair.
