The last one so bad (Super Cuts)I ended up asking to have all his hair shaved off and I left with a crying child because he was unhappy with the haircut and also had multiple cuts on his neck and face from the shapeup. First impressions are a lasting one. My son, boyfriend and I were greeted with a bark (found out he is the owner, later) to "make sure to shut the door!" We should've left that minute. We waited for an hour. My son got his basic haircut, which took 45 minutes. The background old school music is nice and there's free booze if you want to help yourself. The shop is geared to the 20-30 year old hipster crowd. The owner was rude from the start. He continued to carry on his conversation from upstairs bellowing down to his favorite customers or stylists. It's a bizarre, unprofessional atmosphere. I've been here 5-6 times and I really wanted to like the place because the haircut is generally very good and the barbers take their time. However, they need a refresh on their customer service. If you aren't going to allow people to make an appointment, then you need to abide by the "first come first serve" list... Last 2 times I came at opening (8am sharp), and there was already 5 people waiting for cuts. With 4 barbers, that should mean I'd be taken in the second round of haircuts. However, both times I had to leave after waiting over 90 minutes, and customers who came in after me were taken before me (when I got up to look at the running list, people's names below mine were crossed off). The mix of stylists is generally 50/50 male/female, catering to all types of clientele. There are normally 3 - 4 stylists on the floor at any given time. All take walk-ins on Saturdays, but not all do during the week, so an appointment may be necessary then. Street parking is limited but there's a large deck on The Crescent (perpendicular to Church Street) within a very short walking distance to Comb. Last time I went, a customer was told that the wait would be an hour so he left to get coffee. When he returned, the owner berated him in front of everyone for leaving briefly. The moment I walked in the door the Owner/Manager screamed at me in the main room in front of everyone ranting about how they are too busy and how dare I come for a haircut this late. I was shocked, to be demeaned and disrespected like that for no reason and turned away when all I was trying to do was get a haircut before a Christmas party. Everyone stopped and looked at what was going on in silence, and I promptly and politely left, searching for another place to get my haircut. I understood that they were busy and that it would be first come first serve, but I had called ahead and been told sure to come on down for a haircut only 30 minutes earlier. I then drove about 15 miles to get my haircut at CombA and was totally disrespected and rudely turned down by the owner/manager. Needless to say, I left and had to go to a corporate Christmas party looking quite shaggy.... NEVER IN MY LIFE have I seen a salon owner/manager, or any business owner for that matter, treat a customer like that. It was a horrible experience at a time of the year when everyone is usually in a joyful, generous and festive mood. That said, I gave CombA two stars because prior to this adverse experience, I did get a few good haircuts at a good price at the place. It normally has a pleasant environment and great, highly skilled people working there. If not for my bad experience at Christmas time, I would still be going there as my primary place for a good cut. I've been coming here for close to 2.5 years, and really haven't had many issues until yesterday. There's usually a long wait, especially on Saturday, but I got seated right away with a new guy, which should have been a red flag, but since I've had good cuts by 5 or 6 different people at Comb, I figured I could trust the guy. First of all, my hair/beard usually takes 20-30 minutes tops to cut and trim, nothing too complicated. This guy took over an hour for both. Aside from taking forever, I got the worst haircut of my life. The sides of my head don't match, the front comb over was completely uneven, and though the lines on the top of the beard were good, it wasn't until i got home that I saw how bad the neckline was screwed up and left with tons of fluff under the chin. I don't mind paying a premium, especially for a solid cut. But after this experience, I don't think I can return to Comb with any peace of mind. It boggles my mind that I have much to say about a barber shop, but I take it as an affirmation to the level of customer service, quality cut and atmosphere that is provided by "Comb...a barber shop" in Montclair, NJ. The place itself carries that old world barber shop charm with the iconic barbers chairs of metal and leather with footrests and jars of blue Barbicide with razors and combs waiting to be drawn and used as in the days of old, but that's where the old stops. The new begins with the rest of the shop. The decor is just as appealing and what I would describe as edgy rustic. Music plays in the background just at right volume and the plethora up to date magazines and newspapers are there for the eagerly waiting clientele laid out in a neat fashion. Vito, as well as all his staff are client driven and are sure to make you the center of their attention and work to make your experience there is as good as getting a haircut experience can be. Like to chat it up while getting your cut? A conversation is always ready. Not a talker, bad day, hungover? No problem, Sports Center or the like is in perfect view from most if not all the chairs. In a recent attempt to save a few dollars a month (comb haircuts are $25 now), I tried getting my hair cut at a few cheaper chain places (supercuts,pro-cuts, etc) , and every time I regretted my decision instantly. If you're going for the first time, my advice is to schedule an appointment with Vito (which can be hard since he usually books up weeks in advance unless you want a 2pm cut on a Thursday). This will also help you avoid the potentially 30-60 minute wait during busy times (again, because it's the best). Everyone else there will give you a good cut, but Vito is by far the best in my opinion. They seem to have gone through some turnover in the last year or two, so from my cheap perspective, if I'm gonna spend more than $15 on a cut, I want to feel confident it's going to be good. As far as gripes: Yeah I get "cash only" is annoying, but let's not pretend like it's the biggest deal in the world. It's $25 not $250. The sign-up list should be more clearly marked if you're not familiar with the process, but again, shouldn't ruin your day. read more

First let me say that any time I've ever gotten a cut somewhere else I've regretted it. I always get an fresh cut at Comb. Vito and co have been cutting my hair since I was 17yrs old. There is sometimes a wait and it's cash only. Street parking only but around the corner there is a cheap garage ($1 an hr) so it's not a big deal. Anyone in the place can cut your hair and there is always a great vibe. Yes, they take a little longer then supercuts but that's because it isn't supercuts they're artists in their own right and you get an amazing cut every-time so be patient it's worth the extra ten mins! I usually see Danielle she awesome and very sweet. They don't do appointments so be prepared. They also do woman's cuts many of the barbers were hair stylists at one point so they're great for that as well and kids! read more

Comb is an excellent Barber Shop. I've had Vito cutting my hair since I've moved to the area 2 years ago and have never had anything short of perfection. Comb provides a clean, classy environment with PERFECT haircuts EVERYTIME. These Barbers do not have "good days" or "bad days".. there is a certain standard that is expected and met each and every cut. Walk-ins are welcome M-Sa. However, Vito requires an appointment M-F. I just moved back to the New York area from Austin, TX, where I had finally found someone who did an awesome job with my hair. When I finally needed my first NJ haircut I found Comb because of all the great reviews. I would characterize my experience there as just "fine," and here's why. First, I do like going someplace that feels like a barber shop, not a salon. A place guys go to get haircuts. I went on a rainy Saturday morning and I only had a 10 minute wait, although I was told it is normally much crazier. Once I sat down and explained what I was looking for, the conversation ended. I'm used to barbers and stylists chatting with you and asking questions as they do their work, but I got very little of that. There are a few quirks about my hair that I pointed out, hoping there would be some attention paid to them, but I felt like I got the standard "here, your hair is shorter now" treatment. I asked for high off the ears, but didn't get it. I pointed out some trouble spots where my hair seems to grow faster, but once I got home saw that those were inexpertly handled. And when I combed my hair the next morning I could see a lot of unevenness. It almost felt like I got the haircut they wanted to give, not the one I wanted to have. I'm willing to concede that I might not have communicated what I was looking for well. You always try to describe the what's unique about your hair but sometimes the words you use don't get the point you're making across. This may be the type of place that gets better after a couple of visits when they know you better (and honestly for the price that's totally worth it). I have had three amazing experiences here. I went in on my days off at like 1pm and all three times it was busy and I was still able to be in and out in an hour which I think is great.
