I can't believe no one has reviewed Upinngil Farm yet! Upinngil is an amazing place, yes, up in Gill! They are a family-owned dairy with a farm stand selling raw milk, vegetables, bread and breadmaking supplies, eggs, cheesemaking supplies, etc, etc, etc. It's a beautiful drive, and definitely worth the trip. I have been driving up there every weekend to get my milk and eggs for the week. They also have local flour at great prices! The store is set up in a breezeway between the barn and the farmhouse. It It's all self-serve, so bring a good assortment of bills or a checkbook. If you hear an eerie sound that's just the toy train that runs around the perimeter of the ceiling. If you're lucky you might see some cows out the store window. If that wasn't great enough, they also have a friendly farmyard kitty. The milk is so, so good. If you haven't had raw milk before you'll be in for a treat. It tastes so fresh and clean, like pasture and sunshine. I have only bought food from their farm store, but they also have u-pick fruit in the summer.

When it comes to fresh milk, cheese and vegetables, this farm is the place to go. We found this farm a few months back while traveling through the area and we can't get enough of their goods. Whenever we come here we make it a point to buy some of their cheese which is incredible. They also have pick your own flowers throughout the spring and summer which is really great. Another nice thing about this farm is that they also host events on their property. For the longest time we thought about holding our wedding here because their property is so gorgeous. In the end, you need to stop at this farm to try out their fresh items. Just remember to bring small bills to pay for your items because their store is typically self serve with a money drop box. They do have change of need be.

Boy I tell you. What a Find! An actual Diemand in the Rough (pun super intended, but totally over…read moreused, and I don't care) First and foremost, I'm a BBQ reveiwer, this place is traditionally a family turkey farm (pretty sure anyways) and they make the absolute BEST TURKEY AND CHICKEN POT PIES EVER!!!! They also have a bunch of other goodies for sale in their farm store. That being said, BBQ! I very randomly stumbled upon this place while attempting to get lost in the middle of Massachusetts one day. And I stopped in and grabbed a frozen pie to go and heard about this amazing cook out they do every other Monday from like June through August? Maybe September? Gotta check the schedule anyway. So you can go online to their website, click on the Smokehouse Dinners, chose one of their meal plans ( I believe it's Ribs, Chicken, Sausage, .... and one more thing, let me check ... OMG! They changed the Menu!!! Now it's a choice between Ribs, Chicken, BRISKET! OR A TURKEY LEG!?!?! I have To Go BACK NOW!!!) and they come with a cube cut of Awesome homemade corn bread (the ones with the kernels still juicy in the bread!) slice of watermelon, and all you can drink Ice tea and Lemonade, and your choice of 2 sides. Mac and Cheese (good old how grandma use to make it style!) Corn on the cob (oh yes!) I think they had a celery salad and a potato salad maybe? But now they offer roasted butternut squash! I loved my ribs, they weren't as big as I'm use to but they were cooked perfectly. I can tell a lot of love went into the smoking process. My partner had the chicken, it was a 1/2 smoked chicken smoked to perfection as well. So, this place is just a real gem of a place. It's almost like even though you bought a $20 ticket to be there, it feels a hell of a lot more like your friendly neighbors sent you an invitation to their fun backyard BBQ. They had a local string band playing traditional Irish and American tunes. We were all under a canopy tent with picnic tables. We chilled for awhile listening to the music, meeting the locals, watching the sunset over the mountains and all their cows in the fields, just sippin on some cool iced tea and lemonades while they put the finishing touches on the food. I was kinda disappointed they didn't have someone ringing a triangle when the food was ready. And afterwards they had Barts Ice Cream selling small little cups of only 3 of their flavors, I think $4 a cup? It was a very small portion and only 3 flavors, but I guess we were lucky to have even that, It's just one person who has to drag a cart all the way behind the house. You can go inside the farm store and they have some baked goods and some ice cream sandwiches and other yummy things. They brought they're pony or donkey out to say hi to everyone. All their cows came right up to the fence and started eating the piles of corn husks and we got to feed them and pet them too. It was just such a great evening with good people and such a small town welcoming kindness that's getting harder and harder to find now a days. Love the place, love the food, love the people. Awesome!!!

I understand that mushrooms aren't for everybody. Some people love them. Some people hate them…read more Some people like them raw but not cooked. Some people eat them cooked but cower at the sight of them uncooked. That's just the way we are I guess. But mark my words, if you are a mushroom guy or gal, you will flip handsprings at what this company offers. Organically grown wild mushrooms and edible plants are what they sell. I ran into NEWE at the Northampton Farmers Market and struck up a conversation with Paul Lagreze. It took me about 5 seconds to see how knowledgeable and passionate he was about what he was selling. NEWE offers Shitake mushrooms (100% Organic, log-grown), Oyster mushrooms (Sustainably wild-gathered), morels, ramps (a kind of wild onion), and something called "Chicken of the Woods". Of course I had to buy a $5 pint of Chicken of the Woods, What is it? Well, I don't really know - it looks like old breakfast biscuits that have been tossed under a steam roller and left out in the sun too long. Paul said you could cook it just like chicken, and ,,, yes he did say "Tastes like chicken". I wrapped it in foil, added some water and teriyaki sauce and sirachi, and baked at 350 for a while. I gotta say -- it was very good, and yes, it did taste like chicken. I took a photo for you to see how it came out. Go support a cool local business run by a very nice guy....

They also sell some produce from other local farmers. The family claims to offer the best tomatoes in the Pioneer Valley. I agree. I regularly buy their "seconds" to make tomato soup, a favorite of mine. I find their seconds better than the firsts offered by many stands and certainly better than most tomatoes sold at supermarkets. The variety of produce available here is delightful. Ratatouille fans will be in their glory, trying to select which variety of eggplant, summer squash and more to enhance this classic for this visit. For those who like their ratatouille with a kick, the farmers have developed a passion for peppers and offer a wide variety of these difficult-to-grow-in-Massachusetts veggies. Hey, even if you're not a cook, but a watercolorist, this is the place to purchase all of your "models." Imagine piles of yellow, green, purple and orange peppers in a beautiful, handthrown ceramic bowl. After you paint their portrait, stretch yourself in the kitchen, take out the wok and stewpot and make something tasty. The farm also offers fresh flowers grown on site and bedding plants in the spring.
