    Underground Arcade Bar!
    Alexa D.

Oh my gosh, this was so fun! I was visiting my friend Kennedy in Des Moines last March and she took me to Up-Down one night with her fiancé. Coming from Los Angeles, I thought that the drinks were awesomely affordable ($6 for a fancy fufu drink) and it was so fun playing pin-ball and pac-man and racing games, and so so many other retro games that I didn't know even existed. We had "Princess Peach" drinks, which were really sweet and went well with the vibe of going from one retro arcade game to the next. It is a bit dark (and loud) in here, but I think that this adds to the atmosphere of it being an arcade bar. I wanted to bring my boyfriend here when we went to Iowa to be in Kennedy's wedding, but didn't have time to. Maybe we will make an excuse to go once COVID-19 is over.

Aiden, pandemic or not, wear gloves when you grab my slice out of the warmer and throw it into a pizza box. Gross bro. After we asked him to put gloves on and get us different slices, he put the slices he touched, with his hands, back into the warmer (sorry to the next people who got his greasy fingered pizza). The unfingered pizza was good though.

Sweet Bar...Deco and Vibe took me back as I had a few cocktails before a concert right next door at Wooly's, how convenient, makes me smile. Lots to look at and Play "pinball and video games is what I noticed from the bar; but I was torn away by the television screens above; old school wrestling and scooby doo...What? I dig it and the drinks were delivered without delay, bartender must have been reading my mind, "three before the rock show just next door". That was pre~show and then post~show brought me back but this time I was after some serious "Pizza by the Slice" action with a big ol "Coke" and that is what I recieved...Sooo good that I will be returning for more ASAP and will take my friends here to have such delights!! Thank you Up & Down for being You...

I've passed this spot I can't even tell you how many times. Hella into the green neon through the window - the one that says "Heroes get remembered, legends never die" ... All I can hear is the voice of Art LaFleur and all I can see is Benny Rodriguez. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and were instantly losing it over how cool the whole thing is. The "Up" floor has arcade games and great wallpaper, a full bar and a kitchen with pizza and stuff. The "Down" floor is really where it's at, though. This place has ALL of the classics. I have vivid memories of my aunt Kat viciously feeding nickels into Burger Time at an arcade when I was young, and was soooo excited to text her a picture of her favorite game, alive and well in Des Moines. By far the two major highlights were: 1. The big screen tv setup with Mario Kart on N64 ready to go. When I was young, I got an N64 for Christmas when it was THE Christmas toy to get. I was hip shit and I played that game like a fiend. Turns out I still sorta have "it" and was able to whoop my friend super hard. Sadly, I felt super old by the end of the whoopin' though because one round at Wario Stadium dried out my eyes and gave me a thumb cramp. I can't video game like I used to. 2. The early 90's classic living room setup, complete with "that" sofa, and I don't even have to describe it...you know the one I'm talking about...cool posters, and Super Nintendo and a coffee table. We kicked up our feet and geeked out. Go here. It's fun.

Up-Down is a great retro arcade bar located in the East Village. Feeling pin-ball, skee-ball, or 80's and 90's arcade games while getting drunk? Then this is the place to do it. Great spot for a date night, too. I've been here a few times now and have always had a good time. Good drinks and beer and friendly bartenders. Haven't had their pizza yet but it does smell tasty. This place has that "dingy" and "divey" vibe to it which gives it a cool atmosphere. There's two levels to it so there's lots of games to choose from. It has a lot of the arcade games I grew up playing: NBA Jam, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The House of the Dead, just to name a few. There's a lot more than that to choose from, too. My ultimate favorite is Mortal Kombat 3, so that's where you'll most likely find me. All the arcades are token operated. Up-Down is the best arcade in Des Moines since Lazer X (who remembers Lazer X at Merle Hay Mall back in the day?). Other arcade bars have come and gone, but I feel Up-Down will last a long time here.

Remix a childhood favorite by adding alcohol to an arcade trip. Up-Down is one of my favorite stops in Des Moines. Worth a trip...or three. Two thumbs way up. Plus pizza.

Definitely biased because I'm lucky to have a huge UpDown in KCMO. It's okay. Service was decent. Good selection of games, comfy atmosphere.

What I found was a little gem off of one of the main roads in downtown Des Monies. Even before you enter this self described "Tiki Bar" you see all the brick buildings, and then you see an actual grass covered roof...yep that's the place and a really nice touch. The interior is equally cool and spacious, you are greeted by the bar area immediately when you walk in. To your right are comfy couches and instagram friendly neon wall signs, with that signature tiki touch of floral patterns and great lighting. The location is connected to a Asian food restaurant, so they get their food from them as you drink some of the most well crafted adult drinks I've had in a while. I came for happy hour on a Saturday 4:00pm-6:30pm. The drinks were basically 2.00 off with discounted food, the menu is limited to mostly chicken wraps and crab rangoons etc. I will say the portions were filling and very delicious. The star of the show was my El Colmillo, a tequila based drink with lime, orange juice, lime. The bartender did say it's all pre mixed, and that day she subbed the tequila with Casamigos, because the house tequila was out. Customer service was great, until it wasn't. Our server was excellent, until a guy came in off break and they seemed to have some tension. She really didn't have that same positive energy as before, otherwise an overall excellent experience. Pro Tip: Take a walk over to "Hello, Marjorie", it's a completely different vibe but drinks there are just as good...if not better. Go see Travis, he is 10/10 at "Hello, Marjorie".

I wouldn't say there's anything super special we couldn't wait to eat again, but good food and reasonable prices is a win for me. Our favorite part about this place is how many beers on tap they have. It's so fun to get a flight and try lots of local craft drinks. Definitely the place to be for a few drinks and good vibes with friends.

I finally have decided I'm not going back after a few failed tries; the spinach and artichoke dip literally gave my friend and I food poisoning (we hadn't seen each other in over a week and this is the only thing we shared, and our symptoms started at the exact same time). I do love that they have the gluten conscious menu. But the chicken ranch meal is so dry it's not worth the money. The Cole slaw has the least flavor I've ever experienced (and I love Cole slaw). The burgers come out overcooked. I haven't strayed away from sandwiches or salads, maybe the pasta is good? I won't be going back, though.
