I stopped by around 1pm and the display cases had fresh sushi all around as I saw the gentleman behind the counter making new rolls as I perused the options. It's a simple and quick store with a nice variety of sushi. There is one table and a standing counter inside along with one table to sit outside I picked up the salmon nigiri sampler and fatty tuna maki roll which came to about $35. It may seem like a lot but you get a pretty good size portion of each! I absolutely loved the salmon plate. Each piece was so buttery soft and the salmon was as fresh as can be. I loved the couple seared options and really enjoyed the variety of condiments that balanced each bite The fatty tuna roll was so so good, perfect for any tuna lovers! Visited super late on a weekday to grab a quick dinner. I saw a sign that said all rolls were discounted after 5pm, so I had to check it out. The inside is small and unremarkable. It is definitely a grab-and-go place. As the sign stated, all rolls were discounted since it was late. The roll options were honestly really pricey, so I probably would not have gotten a roll had they not been discounted. The sole employee working at the store was friendly and fast. I got the spicy tuna crispy rice and was ambivalent about the flavor. It was definitely very heavy and almost too salty. However, I don't think my standards for spicy tuna crispy rice are unreasonably high, so I did still enjoy eating the roll. Interestingly, I noticed that a couple pieces featured raw fish, but the other pieces seemed to just use canned tuna. This was a bit disappointing because I had assumed all of the pieces would use raw fish. I wouldn't get the same roll again because of the inconsistency of raw fish vs. canned fish and because I've had better spicy tuna crispy rice elsewhere. Ever since Fatty started going back to downtown LA for work, finding new food spot had been a thing. This time, Fatty found Uobei in downtown LA for everyone's quick Japanese cravings. Located at the corner of Main and 9th, it was a to go only deli style Japanese food spot. They didn't really have a menu, whatever was out there to grab was what they had to offer. We got a teriyaki chicken rice bowl and a sushi tray. The fish was surprisingly good for what it was. We would say it was about the same quality as the conveyor belt sushi if not better. The chicken was a little dry but flavor was decent. We did t love the rice since it was drenched in the teriyaki sauce. Overall experience was ok. The service was good. The cashier offered to heat up (microwave) the chicken rice bowl, but at the same time, placed it afterwards on top of the sushi tray . The price point was a little high. Parking - Sucks. My cousin and I had a show at the Orpheum so we wanted grab something quick in the area, we found this little GEM! We went around 6PM and the cashier informed us that they were closing soon but still let us eat inside! The ingredients were FRESH! Even though it's a to-go/deli place the rolls and sushi was superb! They even had AMA EBI 3-pieces with the fried head for $13.99 WHATTTTTTT -- I was surprised it was left until the end of the day haha -- lucky me yay! We also got the fresh scallop roll; delicious! I ... also got the seaweed salad and edamame- judge me all you want but I LOVE IT hahaha I saw that they had a warm section too but it was empty when we went but I believe they have warm bowls, yakisoba and takoyaki. Grabbed lunch here today! Super legit, casual Japanese delica concept store where they make and serve same-day fresh, affordable, JP fare. If you've ever been to Japan, this type of small establishment near stations and conbinis are common. I tried their spicy tuna & spicy salmon crispy rice (5x big pieces for $13.99) and takoyaki ($3 - all sides same price I think I saw karaage chicken too). Soooooo good!!!!!!! The rice was still crispy even though it was refrigerated and I liked that they used cook flaked salmon vs raw (spicy tuna was also good standard!). Didn't need any additional soy sauce or anything - v flavorful. I also enjoyed practicing some of my limited Japanese with the cashier! (I think it's a family run biz?). I was a bit in a rush so next time I'll have a better look at what else is there! What a delightful little Japanese deli - it's like the mini version of the hot food section in Tokyo Central took a field trip to downtown. It's a grab and go situation here: there's a prepackaged hot food bar, and plenty of take away sushi options. You can also place an order for a personalized item at the register. Parking: This place is located in Downtown LA and iykyk. There's little to no parking unless you hit it right and score a sweet spot. I was actually lucky that day and found close meter parking and popped in a cute quarter. If I was you I would drop off someone and drive around the block in the car and pick them up after they are done. However, if you are by yourself then I will pray for you to find a parking spot. Good luck to all on their parking adventures. Inside: Inside the store is quite small. I would describe the set up as a small convenience store. When you enter they have hot food already made on the left side and cold drinks and desserts on the right side. On their menu they say you can customize your order. I did not this time, but I found that really cool. They do charge $$$ for customization though so keep that in mind. Seating: There is NO SEATING INSIDE. However, they do have one table outside the store. Enough to seat two people. Salmon Avocado Bowl: I love sushi and salmon. I came here specifically just to try this bowl. I couldn't resist because it looked so great from the reviews and pictures. Gurl when I tell you this bowl was everything I imagined and more...IT WAS!!! OMG THE SALMON IS NO JOKE SIS!!! The salmon was fresh, sweet and melts right in your mouth. It went so well with the sushi rice under. Just so exquisite. The bowl really didn't need the avocado because it was just that great on its own, but it added another layer of creaminess to it. It's a 100 outta 100 for me. Teriyaki Chicken Uobei Style: Honestly I was so skeptical of the teriyaki chicken bowl when I saw it, but I was like why not. WOW! This bowl did not disappoint. The chicken was juicy and they gave a HUGE PORTION too. They also give you sauce on the side. I don't think it really needs it because it already had so much flavor. They also offer to heat it up for you in the microwave if you are planning to eat it right away. They are too kind. I was so satisfied afterwards and my tummy was so happy after eating every bite. Overall: Great place to pick up fresh food for on the go or quick lunch or dinner. This is not a sit and eat kind of place, but more of a togo place only. Uobei is my favorite place for lunch in dtla during the week. Its a super small store like in japan and they have fresh made sushi everyday. You can also call ahead and have them heat up teriyaki bowls. They are super nice there and love going for a walk to get lunch. Also really close to great coffee. They had some really good looking pre-made packaged sushi rolls, bowls, and appetizers (cold and hot). I really wanted sashimi and asked the people there if they can make it for me. They were more than happy to. I ended up getting twice pieces of salmon and albacore. I originally wanted yellowtail as well but they had already ran out. I also got a packaged seaweed salad on the side. Everything was perfect and really good. The person I came with got two scallop handrolls and enjoyed them. I had a craving for sushi but didn't want to spend a ton of money on Sugarfish that day. I found Uobei and walked there since it wasn't far. Arriving at ~3pm on a weekend, there wasn't much left. Note to self to go earlier next time for more selection. Luckily, I was still able to find things I wanted to try - The premier nigiri box and the tuna nigiri. The total came out to be around ~$20. To be honest, I didn't have high expectations for to-go boxed sushi, but wow, the fish was very fresh with no fishy aftertaste. Each of the tuna nigiri in the premium nigiri box was garnished differently. Love how there were different flavor profiles to change it up! The owner was so nice and even offered me a free Japanese red bean popsicle since it was hot out. I really appreciated the kindness. So a few weeks ago, I happened to be at an event at the convention center and was looking for a quick dinner afterwards. I'd originally been planning on checking out a place on my list in the arts district, but decided last minute I didn't feel like trekking that far - when I saw there was a small, fast, unpretentious sushi spot advertising "30% off after 6", and knew I'd be there *right* around 6... obviously that was the place I had to try. "Sadly", it appears to now be "only" 20% off after 6 now, but that's still a pretty good deal - anyway, by absolute *complete* coincidence, we got there right at 6:01... and learned they were out of almost everything, except a handful of specific pre-made stuff, which is sort of what I expected might happen. But honestly, everything we tried (a chirashi bowl, and two random rolls they had left) was pretty good - I feel like there are really two very different experiences, though, based on whether you're here for the deal, or earlier in the day when the full menu is guaranteed to be available. So I definitely want to check out their full menu sometime, even at full price, but I'd also totally come back after 6, and be happy with a 20% off dinner of "what do you have left?" It is pretty convenient, too, having such relatively high quality sushi that's also completely grab-and-go, if you're in a hurry. (And I would imagine, if they weren't closing soon, their freshly-ordered stuff would still be pretty quick, it's that sort of place.) I will say, I agree with my wife, at least the pre-made stuff, weren't *quite* as good on average as sushi prepared fresh-to-order - some of the rice in one roll was a little stale, and the unagi on one of them was a little rubbery, but that's not completely surprising (it's why they were on sale, after all). It was honestly more surprising that *most* of it was absolutely still super-fresh, again, for a grab-and-go system, not to mention at 20% off. Their normal, pre-discounted prices were pretty standard for good sushi, and the fish quality totally lived up to that price. Pretty *large* chirashi, too (we left pretty full, rather unusually for non-AYCE sushi), and with a good amount of variety - even a small piece of lobster! Great tamago in it, too. The owner was very friendly, too - he was also more apologetic than he needed to be about the limited options when we walked in, he even threw in a free small karaage chicken since they were closing in an hour anyway (incidentally: also pretty tasty karaage chicken). Really my only complaint about this place is that it's *tiny* - it'd be absolutely perfect for a quick grab-and-go meal, but for a sitdown meal... it would've been nice if their one tiny table had been slightly bigger (it was just barely big enough for the four packaged items we ate), and maybe a little less wobbly. Obviously that complaint wouldn't stop me from coming back if I were in the area, *either* to try some of the made-to-order stuff if I got here earlier in the day (I especially want to try the "salmon sampler"!), or definitely, if I'm here from 5-6, to eat basically whatever they've got left, it's all going to be good, I'm sure. p.s. my wife also grabbed one of their chicken bowls on the way out, to have for lunch the next day, since it was also 20% off - I had a bite of it the following day, it was also pretty good, I definitely had wished that day that I had done that, too! It's a hole in the wall feel, with legit Japanese food. They have really cute/ smaller packaging of different sizes, so if you're in the mood for a snack, or can't choose between the Yaki soba and chicken teriyaki meal, they have smaller portions at cheaper prices versus buying the full sized meals. The rolls also look very fresh. I got the dragon roll and a small chicken teriyaki meal ($3) and the food quality is amazing. The rice is soft and chewy and makes me feel like I'm in Japan. Love the quality of this grab and go sushi spot, it was all I ate for two days while staying in DTLA

This spot is a to-go specialty store that seemed to have just opened recently. It's a cozy little interior where you can pick and choose your ready to go items such as sushi and yakisoba, or you can also order "hot" items like the curry fried chicken and rice that I ordered. All were so good - I especially liked the Yakisoba noodles and the fried chicken + curry rice!! The rice grains were so tender and soft and felt very fresh - just awesome. Fried chicken and dipping it in the curry was awesome too. The curry was definitely different from the usual "curry" served at other japanese restaurants - try dunking the fried chicken into the curry and eat it with some of that fresh rice - it's a great combo. The yakisoba I failed to heat up enough - I did about 1 minute and 30 seconds - maybe people should try 2 minutes to get it piping hot. Overall - I'll be coming back to this place again! read more
