This is the story of a petite fashionista with a big dream... and it goes a little something like this... The mastermind behind TULA started off her career in fashion by moving to the Big Apple. She worked with fabulous designers such as Gianni Versace, Emmanuel Ungaro, and Escada. But, as all Jersey girls do, she returned to her roots. Angela decided TU-share her talent and desire; TU-inspire style at the Jersey shore.

I went with my daughter to this shop early this week. We met with Sabine the store's owner and my…read moredaughter bought a pricey pair of shoes and a piece of jewelry and spent nearly $500 at this boutique. As soon as my daughter was done paying, Sabine, who, up until that point had been nice enough, suddenly changed up her attitude and began to berate my daughter, who was wearing a mask. She demanded to know why my daughter was still wearing a mask, in fact her exact words were, "You're still wearing a mask. Why?" When my daughter explained her reasons for still wearing a mask, (not that she needed to explain herself), Sabine started to say it's probably because my daughter was a foreigner, "I know foreigners like to wear masks," were Sabine's words. For the record, we are not foreigners. We may not be white, but my family and I are American citizens, my children were born and raised in the US. My daughter told Sabine clearly that she was not a foreigner, and that she was born and raised in this country, to which Sabine replied, "Well, I guess you don't have an accent." My daughter walked out of the store shocked at the ridiculously racist comments she had just be subjected to from a store she had just supported with her business. We are still in shock! In the wake of all the attacks on members of the Asian American community, I do not feel safe letting my friends and family of color go near this shop which is owned by a woman who is blatantly racist and intolerant. I recommend that all people of color stay away from this shop.

What sets this shop apart is their sheer expertise. This isn't the kind of place where you just pull things off a rack yourself; it's a personal boutique experience where you put your trust in the experts. I can't count the number of times I've walked in with one idea in mind, let them "do their thing," and walked out with a dress more stunning than I ever could have imagined. They have an intuitive sense for style, body type, and fit that is second to none. As a fuller figured woman that lacks confidence, they have never let me down! From the initial selections to the final fitting, they ensure everything is absolute perfection. Thank you, Diane, Kim, and Chrissy, for over a decade of making us feel beautiful and confident. Prior to my appointment, I even contacted the designer in California and was told that Diane & Co should at least have fabric swatches available if I decided to order through them. When I arrived for my appointment, there was already an uncomfortable situation unfolding in the store involving another customer and a disputed sale. While I chose to overlook that and proceed with my appointment, the overall experience only declined from there. The owner greeted me abruptly and, after I showed her an inspiration photo, immediately told me that a ball gown "would not look good" on me--an unnecessary and unprofessional comment. I then worked with a sales associate, who informed me that the dress I was looking for had just been sold. She proceeded to bring out two heavy, winter-style gowns that were completely inconsistent with what I had described (a formal summer garden wedding) and in a size (16) that did not match mine (4). Despite being told the store carries thousands of dresses, I was ultimately told there was nothing suitable for me. Given my budget of up to $3,000, this was both surprising and disappointing. Having worked in the retail and service industry myself, I can honestly say this was one of the most discouraging and unprofessional shopping experiences I've had. I left feeling dismissed rather than assisted. I ended up going to Emily's Boutique, where the experience could not have been more different--welcoming, attentive, and ultimately successful, as I found the perfect gown. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Diane & Company to others looking for a positive, customer-focused shopping experience.
