The teeny weeny Unthank Kitchen, the final stop on my Norwich trip and a very special final stop it was. Caught in the rain again and considering how busy this tiny cafe was it was looking bad, however like Moses at the Red Sea the people parted on our arrival and we settled in for a breakfast.
There are only five tables and three outside of the Unthank Kitchen, so it certainly is cosy. One pays for their food first up and on seeing the menu they certainly specialise in breakfasts. There are also various sandwiches, but many are big breakfast bap based. So if the breakfast is the speciality and the price an eye opening £5.90 (there were cheaper options but my word I was famished and the beer sweats were on) I was hoping for something special.
There was the option of chips or hash browns, frankly chips for breakfast is a gastro crime, although you'll get more for your sterling. On arrival I was suitably impressed, an enormous plate that sat like a cuckoo in the nest upon the table. It was twos up all the way with two bacon, two browns, two eggs, two sausages with a pile of mushrooms and beans. The bacon was fried to perfection and the eggs perfect. The keystone holding it all together were the sausages, allegedly award winning they were something super. A good sausage in a cafe these days is hard to find, they're usually standard deep fried bread filled garbage, these had meat and herbs and tasted superb.
The whole monster was washed down with a big free mug of Earl Grey and I contemplated the hours, like a crocodile digesting a wildebeast, I would have to spend with the breakfast in my belly. Only one gripe for this friendly and good value cafe, no black pudding. read more
