It's such a blessing to be well to donate blood. Was invited to participate in the friends and…read morefamily blood donation drive. While not being able to attend during the week in my local area, the scheduling dept informed me that the friends and family blood drive is the entire month of July including weekend locations. During the screening prior over the phone, they ask specific qualifying questions to be a donor. I opted for a Saturday appointment which is quite a drive from the South Bay to Duarte. Parking is free in structure A which is a short walk to the donor building. The donor center is on the 2nd floor. The registration desk helps with the paperwork including specific info for the friends and family blood drive. There are also information sheets in a binder. There is a dire need for blood donations especially with the work that City of Hope does w/cancer patients! After registration, it's a few minutes in the waiting room. I asked for water and they got me a bottled water and drank half of it. Next is like a triage where they do a test prick on a finger and a blood pressure check. Then the tech brings you to station where you lay down sitting up and they poke you and proceed to draw blood. You are then instructed to squeeze the little red thing every 40 seconds. The poor guy next to me had trouble and the techs and later RN tended to him. He was not hydrated well and his blood stopped releasing. They told him that next time he needs to hydrate well and his blood could not be used this time. When the nurse checked on me, I asked if my blood was doing good and she said yes, that my donation is almost done. We chatted and she was super nice. Then it was time disconnect and she escorted me to the snacks and observation area. The staff at the observation at were great . So nice. They made me a decaf and I snacked on some chips. Next I grabbed some chips ahoy cookies. After observation time was done, the gal informed I was free to go if feeling well. Room for improvement is that the registration gal and the techs can work w/ more positive energy. The techs were kinda chatty w/each other. Although one was sweet and other kinda so so. Overall, they do wonderful work at City of Hope and blood donations are critical.

Well I am here to donate platelets for the third time today. The facilities here are very clean and…read morethere is some pretty art outside. Everyone here is also very nice. There is plenty of parking and they even have their own street, appropriately named Hope Drive. There is also valet parking that is free for first time patients. However, all of that is changing on 9/1/20 because they will be doing construction for 2 years to build a parking garage. I recommend looking on their website for updates. Since we are living the covid life these days there are no visitors allowed to the patients. All donors must pass the water fountain and the white valet tents and go just in the door to get questioned about covid. When I came a couple times my iron was too low. I recommend anyone donating to eat healthy meals and ladies, maybe avoid it on the days of your period. The first time I was rejected I had just finished my period. So, when I donate I ask for an orange card first just to check my iron before I have to fill out the much longer blue card. My moms friend's life was saved here many years ago and, although they weren't able to save my loved one's life recently, they tried their best and I do think they prolonged her life. The most touching thing I have seen here is that many nurses and other employees are donating their own blood and platelets to their patients. Five nurses donated to my loved one and that is so touching! So, this place lives up to its name. It really is a place of hope.

Then went on my app for express pass for a long list of questionnaire by doing it saves time. I never make reservations always walk in and I guess lucky to not wait. When I enter Craig the volunteer this tall, friendly good looking man greeted me and was very nice attentive from beginning to the end. Offered drinks snacks and asked how I was. Next Nick the nurse very nice, helpful, informative and friendly. Check how I was doing during process explained procedures and what was happening with the machines. Started with mini physical checked temperature, blood pressure, pricked finger got some blood to check hemoglobin (iron) and weight. Then you lay on reclining bed, the arm that has the needle lays on a warming pad which feels more comfy. Took about 45minutes for the whole process. Then your arm gets taped and informed about what to do afterwards like no lifting, no drinking etc. you also get a paper with more information like who to call incase something bad happens. Then wait 15 minutes before leaving and waiting area theres some snacks and drinks. By the way I been here so many times and all the volunteers and nurse do amazing job. Once again Craig & Nick thank you, appreciate what you guys do, have a nice day! Lastly theres area for kids to wait and watch television. Brought my son before and its ok.

I have donated at Livestream Blood Bank consistently for the past two years without a single issue,…read morewhich makes this experience even more troubling. During my most recent visit, I was having casual conversation with a staff member while going through the screening process. I mentioned that I served in the military and that while deployed overseas, we were briefed on certain diseases present in different regions. I referenced one illness that required quarantine if contracted -- something we were told as part of standard military health briefings. It was clearly general information from my time in service, not a personal medical disclosure. Despite clarifying multiple times that I do not have any illness and was simply recounting a military briefing, the staff member treated my comment as if I were admitting to having a disqualifying condition. I was then denied the opportunity to donate and ultimately had a permanent block placed on my account. When I requested to speak with someone in a supervisory role, I did not receive a clear explanation for the decision. No one could articulate how a general story about military health briefings resulted in such a severe action -- especially given my two-year history of successful donations both at this location and at other centers. What makes this situation particularly concerning is that I left feeling profiled rather than evaluated based on facts. I cannot ignore the possibility that unconscious bias may have played a role in how my comments were interpreted and escalated. After two years as a compliant donor, the sudden shift in treatment without clear reasoning raises serious questions. Donors deserve consistent standards, clear communication, and professionalism. Instead, I experienced embarrassment, inconvenience, and what felt like discriminatory treatment. I sincerely hope this organization reviews how situations like this are handled so that other donors do not have a similar experience. -- Michael

I'm a big chicken when it comes to needles....and I almost walked out when I saw how thick that thing was...but all in all...everyone there kept me at ease...I didnt pass out or get dizzy....they had plenty of cookies and refreshments which made the whole experience delightful. Griselda gave great information before and after the blood donation like, no working out for 24 hours, no alcohol consumption for 24... hours etc.....tbh I drank 8 margaritas about 2 hours later and felt fine....still good info...September 30th! Here i come!

Tried to give blood today and left in a lot of pain with no donation completed. I arrived and there…read morewere two women- one in scrubs one not. The woman not in scrubs began my blood draw process while the woman in scrubs went to the restroom. She inserted the needle- did not tell me that she was going to insert, no "take a big breath in", "you'll feel a slight prick", etc. She inserted the needle and did not hit a vein, she proceeded to move the needle around in my arm which caused a lot of discomfort. I winced multiple times. The woman in scrubs came out of the restroom and the other woman immediately asked her to reposition the needle that was in my arm. She then continues to move the needle around in my arm until it hits something VERY painful. I yelped and she then said she would take it out. She was in the middle of pulling out the needle, I'm wincing and expressing extreme discomfort, and the girl not in scrubs asks me to confirm my date of birth. I understand needing the information but it did not feel like an appropriate time. The vein in my right elbow is positioned sideways and the woman in scrubs said she did not feel comfortable continuing. I have never had problems with blood draws in my right/sideways vein so that in addition to the unsuccessful left arm draw made me feel that they were both in need of training by an appropriate source. It felt that the woman in scrubs was the lead phlebotomist of the two but with the mistakes and nerves presented in both, additional training is needed so this does not happened to anyone else. I will not be returning to donate blood at this location.

I was here several months ago, and (it happened again when I recently visited) the laptop kicked me out when I got to a certain part of the questionnaire. Instead of just signing me back in, the woman seemed impatient, and without saying anything, proceeded to fill it in for me, asking me the questions. I thought that was condescending. Also, both employees were engaged in conversation with each other while I was there. I'm glad my experience this time was better, as I'd considered not donating there again, even if it was the closest location to me.
