If you work in the film industry, they have everything you could possibly imagine! If you're a film student looking to get onto the industry, they have everything you could possibly want...except compassion. I just left from checking props out here for a student film I'm working on this weekend and myself and the 2 others I was with were treated with complete disrespect. It was our first time checking things out of a prop house so obviously we didn't understand the process completely other than what our school has taught us. The entire time the staff said nothing but condescending things to us, and about us to one another loud enough for the entire warehouse to hear. For example, we were waiting to actually be helped and when we approached one of them we were told "Oh anyone can help you so go to that guy over there." And I know the tone doesn't translate into text but I'm telling you he was beyond rude. Next while we were actually waiting to be helped which took quite a while, we realized a light we chose wouldn't work so we figured we had time to change it out. While we were in the process of putting away the original light, we hear one of the guys call out to another, "hey, are you helping the students? It's your turn to watch them!" That's right, loud enough for us to hear it, he talked about us like we were children who were being babysat. Like how blatantly rude can you be, right? Oh but it continues. When we returned with the light we wanted and finally got someone to help us, the guy we originally spoke to comes up and says, "Have you guys finally made up your mind?" At this point I'm over it, my director is over it, my DP is over it, so we were honestly just trying to do whatever they wanted and say as little as possible. We just wanted to get out of there. I think they need to be reminded that they were once students too. Learning, curious, wanting to break into the industry, and they did! They should show the kind of compassion they wanted to hear when they were students like us. There's a way to be stern, but not be complete assholes at the same time. So if you're a student and considering what prop houses to shop at for your projects, don't go to this one. You're in Hollywood, there's dozens of other prop houses where I'm sure you'll be treated better as a paying customer. read more
